Is Civil Unrest Coming to Suburbia? Rest Assured, the Media Will Lie About It

Many people watching Milwaukee burn on the news from the safety of their homes in the suburbs feel immune. It seems like this only happens in big cities, right? “These people are burning down their own neighborhoods, how ridiculous,” observers say. They feel safe in their belief that the issue is merely a war on cops, and it’s nothing that could happen to them.
While cities like Milwaukee and Baltimore have been hard hit, keep in mind that Ferguson, Missouri is a relatively small town with a population of just over 21,000 people at the last census.
Suburbia isn’t the safe haven many believe it to be. And guess who is covering up the threat? That’s right. The mainstream news. It certainly wouldn’t be politically correct if they were to air the fact that the sister of the armed man shot by police in Milwaukee actually directed her fellow rioters to head to the suburbs.
In fact, CNN did the complete opposite. They carefully edited a clip and flat out said Sherelle Smith was calling for peace. In my part of the world, they would call this kind of deception a lie, not a “mistake”.
Wow, that’s really nice, isn’t it? Despite her loss, she wants her community to band together to end violence. Good for her.

If there was ever a disaster to prep for, this is it.
With the race war fires being fanned by the likes of billionaire George Soros, you can bet your bottom dollar this problem is not going away anytime soon. One study found “between 20 and 50 social media accounts in Baltimore that were also tied to the peak period of violence in Ferguson. While further analysis is being conducted on the data, it suggests the presence of “professional protesters” or anarchists taking advantage of Freddie Gray’s death to incite more violence.” That’s right. People get paid to make a bad situation even worse.
And the media will not warn you – it’s politically incorrect to state that a certain group may be headed to destroy the communities of another certain group. And if they do, you can be sure that the coverage will be slanted to say that Certain Group #1 was only defending itself against Certain Group #2 and that even though Certain Group #2 never shot anyone, they still deserve it. Reparations and all that jazz.
The guy who wrote this article lived through the LA Riots. In the article, he predicts an enormous body count because (as we’ve seen in Baltimore) the police keep getting ordered to stand down and let people riot. In the article, Mac Young wrote, “But what can be clearly stated — and needs to be understood — is cops, unlike civilians — have rules of engagement, limits and use of force restrictions. Civilians don’t. That’s the other way bodies start stacking up.”
Are you ready for this?
How exactly do you get prepared for a war zone in your own neighborhood?
The first and most important thing to remember is this: DURING CIVIL UNREST SITUATIONS, YOU ARE COMPLETELY ON YOUR OWN. Do you think the people rampaging through the suburbs because they’re angry will respect your home, your fence, or the locks on your doors?
You have to realize that at any point in time, you could find yourself on your own, without backup from 911.
The only person you can rely on to protect your family is yourself.
Take a long hard look at the threats you face during civil unrest, and develop one. Wherever you live, whatever your situation, you need to plan as though 911 does not exist. Whether riots are occurring in the streets or not, in the seconds during which the lives of your family hang in the balance, you are completely on your own.
Following is a plan for dealing with an episode of civil unrest, taken from an article I wrote during the Ferguson riots. This plan is also applicable for societal breakdowns that occur in the aftermath of a huge disaster.
Get home
In a perfect world, we’d all be home, watching the chaos erupt on TV from the safety of our living rooms. However, reality says that some of us will be at work, at school, or in the car when unrest occurs. You need to develop a “get-home” plan for all of the members of your family, based on the most likely places that they will be.
- Devise an efficient route for picking up the kids from school. Be sure that anyone who might be picking up the children already has permission to do so in the school office.
- Discuss the plan with older kids – there have been rumors that children could be moved by the schools to a secondary location in the event of a crisis. Some families have formulated plans for their older kids to leave the school grounds in such an instance and take a designated route home or to another meeting place.
- Keep a get-home bag in the trunk of your car in case you have to set out on foot. (Here’s what I keep in my vehicle.)
- Stash some supplies in the bottom of your child’s backpack – water, a snack, any tools that might be useful, and a map. Be sure your children understand the importance of OPSEC and don’t include items that will get them suspended or arrested because of the fear-culture in our schools.
- Find multiple routes home – map out alternative backroad ways to get home as well as directions if you must go home on foot.
- Find hiding places along the way. If you work or go to school a substantial distance from your home, figure out some places to lay low now, before a crisis situation. Sometimes staying out of sight is the best way to stay safe.
- Avoid groups of people. It seems that the mob mentality strikes when large groups of people get together. Often folks who would never ordinarily riot in the streets get swept up by the mass of people who are doing so.
Keep in mind that in many civil disorder situations the authorities are to be avoided every bit as diligently as the angry mobs of looters. Who can forget the scenes of innocent people being pepper sprayed by uniformed thugs in body armor just because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time? And seriously, when there are rioters everywhere, it would be difficult to use discretion in the heat of the moment – everyone not in a uniform would seem like the enemy.
Stay home
Once you make your way home or to your bug-out location …. STAY THERE.
By staying home, you are minimizing your risk of being caught in the midst of an angry mob or of sitting in stalled traffic while looters run amok. In most scenarios, you will be far safer at home than you will be in any type of shelter or refuge situation. (Obviously if there is some type of chemical or natural threat in your immediate neighborhood, like a toxic leak, a flood, or a forest fire, the whole situation changes – you must use common sense before hunkering down.)
This is when your preparedness supplies will really pay off. If you are ready for minor medical emergencies and illnesses, a grid down scenario, and a no-comm situation, you will be able to stay safely at home with your family and ride out the crisis in moderate comfort.
Be sure you have a supply of the following:
- Water (just in case the municipal supply lines are damaged)
- Necessary prescription medications
- Dry milk (you won’t want to leave to pick up a gallon of milk for the kiddos, and you may be hunkering down for a few days.)
- Emergency food buckets and/or a well stocked pantry
– you need at least a one-month supply of food for the entire family, including pets
- A tactical quality first aid kit
- Lighting in the event of a power outage
- Sanitation supplies (in the event that the municipal water system is unusable, this would include cleaning supplies and toilet supplies)
- Over-the-counter medications and/or herbal remedies
to treat illnesses at home
- A diverse survival
guide, a very thorough preparedness book
Be prepared to defend your home
Out of all of the ways to be prepared for unrest, this is the most important one.
Sometimes despite our best intentions, the fight comes to us. Even though we stay home, something about our place draws the attention of an unsavory person or group.
Defense is two-fold. You want to stay under the radar and not draw attention to yourself. The extent to which you strive to do this should be based on the severity of the unrest in your area. Some of the following recommendations are not necessary during an everyday grid-down scenario, but could save your life in a more extreme civil unrest scenario or a situation that has gone long-term. It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.
The best way to win a fight is to avoid getting into that fight in the first place. Secure your home 
Here are some tips to make your home less of a target:
- Keep all the doors and windows locked. Secure sliding doors with a metal bar. Consider installing decorative grid-work over a door with a large window so that it becomes difficult for someone to smash the glass and reach in to unlock the door. Install a door bar
on your front and back doors.
- Keep the curtains closed. There’s no need for people walking past to be able to see what you have or to do reconnaissance on how many people are present. If the power is out, put dark plastic over the windows. (Heavy duty garbage bags work well.) If it’s safe to do so, go outside and check to see if any light escapes from the windows. If your home is the only one on the block that is well-lit, it is a beacon to others.
- Keep cooking smells to a minimum, especially if there is a food shortage. If everyone else in the neighborhood is hungry, the meat on your grill will draw people like moths to a flame.
- Don’t answer the door. Many home invasions start with an innocent-seeming knock at the door to gain access to your house.
- Keep pets indoors. Sometimes criminals use an animal in distress to get a homeowner to open the door for them. Sometimes people are just mean and hurt animals for “fun”. Either way, it’s safer for your furry friends to be inside with you.
Fire is of enormous concern in these types of scenarios. Fire is a cowardly attack that doesn’t require any interaction on the part of the arsonist. It flushes out the family inside, leaving you vulnerable to physical assaults.
Be ready for the potential of fire.
- Have fire extinguishers mounted throughout your home. You can buy them in 6 packs from Amazon
- Be sure to test them frequently and maintain them properly. (Allstate has a page about fire extinguisher maintenance.)
- Have fire escape ladders
that can be attached to a windowsill in all upper story rooms. Drill with them so that your kids know how to use them if necessary.
- Have bug-out bags prepared that contain all of your important documents in them in case you have to grab and go.
If, despite your best efforts, your property draws the attention of people with ill intent, you must be ready to defend your family and your home
For some, vandalizing and destroying property is the order of the day. Often, times of civil unrest give people of a certain mentality the excuse they need to seek vengeance against those who have “more” than they do. Tensions erupt between the “haves” and the “have-nots”. When this occurs, often destruction of property is the way these people choose to show their “power”.
While this starts out as purely a property crime, the situation can quickly turn violent. If someone is outside bashing the headlights of your vehicle, it isn’t a far stretch to think that they’ll bash on you if you confront them.
How to respond to this is a very individual decision, and depends to a great extent on your personal skill levels and confidence. For example, I’m a single mom with daughters. As much as I like my Jeep, it’s unlikely that I’d confront an angry mob destroying it, because that just wouldn’t be sensible. Things can be replaced, but you and your family members cannot. If you are a person who is unaccustomed to physical confrontations, you may be better off staying inside and calling your insurance company after the fact. No possession is worth your life or the lives of your family.
Be armed.
Alternatively, in some situations, the aggression won’t stop with the destruction of your property. You may have to defend your family. And for this, you MUST BE ARMED.
I’m sure I’ll receive another barrage of email wishing me and my children dead by our own guns. (It always amazes me how people who swear vehemently that they’re against violence can send me those letters that fervently hope for bloody and terrifying deaths for us.) Some people are so terrified of self-defense tools that the very idea of using one causes veritable spasms of cognitive dissonance and denial.
Those very same people will tell you that they’ve survived riots or unrest and never had to have a gun or shoot anyone. Chances are, you won’t have to unholster your weapon yourself. But this is a plan based on pure luck, and survival favors the prepared. I do not base my preparations for my family on the hope for good luck.
Firearms are an equalizer. A small woman can defend herself from multiple large intruders with a firearm, if she’s had some training and knows how to use it properly. But put a kitchen knife in her hand against those same intruders, and her odds decrease exponentially.
If the situation does escalate and the lives of you and your loved ones are in danger, there is no substitute for meeting force with force. You may not wish to engage, but sometimes there’s no time to escape. Sometimes there’s no place to escape to. In these situations, you won’t be able to talk your way out of it, hide from it, or throw dishes at the intruders to fight them off.
- Don’t rely on 911. If the disorder is widespread, don’t depend on a call to 911 to save you – you must be prepared to save yourself. First responders may be tied up, and in some cases, the cops are not always your friends. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, some officers joined in the crime sprees, and others stomped all over the 2nd Amendment and confiscated people’s legal firearms at a time when they needed them the most.
- Be armed and keep your firearm on your person. When the door of your home is breached, you can be pretty sure the people coming in are not there to make friendly conversation over a nice cup of tea. Make a plan to greet them with a deterring amount of force. Be sure to keep your firearm on your person during this type of situation, because there won’t be time to go get it from your gun safe. Don’t even go to the kitchen to get a snack without it. Home invasions go down in seconds, and you have to be constantly ready. Make sure to practice drawing your weapon on a regular basis. This is no time to fumble around, and when you’re scared, you will be reliant on muscle memory.
- Know how to use your firearm. Whatever your choice of weapon, practice, practice, practice. A weapon you don’t know how to use is more dangerous than having no weapon at all. Here’s some advice from someone who knows a lot more about weapons than I do. If you can, find an instructor that does classes at a simulation range. It’s a lot different to use your weapon moving around with threats popping up at you than it is standing at a range and firing at a stationary target.
- Make sure your children are familiar with the rules of gun safety. Of course, it should go without saying that you will have pre-emptively taught your children the rules of gun safety so that no horrifying accidents occur. In fact, it’s my fervent hope that any child old enough to do so has been taught to safely and effectively use a firearm themselves. Knowledge is safety. My 15 year old daughter shoots regularly and is getting to be quite accurate. I have little doubt that if she was backed into a corner, she could successfully hit the target to protect herself.
- Have a safe room established for children or other vulnerable family members. If the worst happens and your home is breached, you need to have a room into which family members can escape. This room needs to have a heavy exterior door instead of a regular hollow core interior door. There should be communications devices in the room so that the person can call for help, as well as a reliable weapon to be used in the unlikely event that the safe room is breached. The family members should be instructed not to come out of that room FOR ANY REASON until you give them the all clear or help has arrived. You can learn more about building a safe room HERE. Focus the tips for creating a safe room in an apartment to put it together more quickly.
- Plan an escape route. If the odds are against you, devise a way to get your family to safety. Your property is not worth your life. Be wise enough to know if you’re getting into a fight that you can’t win.
This isn’t just make-believe, action movie stuff. I’ve had an incident at my own home down a long country road, and I have never been more thankful to be armed. Just the fact that I had a gun and was clearly willing to use it meant the difference between something unspeakable occurring and nothing happening at all.
Civilization is just a veneer.
The foundation of acceptable behavior that our society was built on is starting to crack. What lies beneath it is uglier than most people want to imagine.
Look at the videos of what’s going on in Milwaukee. Look at what happened during the Ferguson riots. The Baltimore riots. The Baton Rouge riots. Look at the behavior of the stampeding masses on any given Black Friday shopping extravaganza.
Then tell me how “civilized” our country is.
Chaos isn’t just for big cities anymore. It could be coming to a suburban location near you.

I like the article Daisy wrote for personal defense and prep. I have a different take on what to do. As and old ‘nam guy I have discussed this topic with those coming back from the middle east that had urban warfare training.
One item they said over and over again was planning for urban attacks was needed at the subdivision level day one. They all believed fighting individually would be a disaster.
They said start first by making a command center where multiple groups report back intelligence to the center. Next anyone walking on patrol around homes would have to have a colored (say red) arm band as part of the sub’s security. One guy joked “…without that band you would end up killing half your neighbors in panic…”
Next control access and traffic into and out of the subdivision. For example build a street access checkpoint/barricade system for subdivision access (armed people with red arm bands control) to streets with your neighbors to keep fast moving vehicles from doing hit and run attacks. To build the barricades one guy joked he would go to his elementary school and rip all the bike racks out to build street barricades that could be easily moved around. People who belong and enter in the sub would be given red arm bands and told to go to their homes and stay there.
The next item these guys mentioned was to make multiple pickup trucks into tactical mobile vehicles that could quickly move from one end of the sub to the other to engage attackers. The pickup would have a small squad in the truck bed engaging in quick fire fights and have a supply of fire extinguishers to out fires.
This kind of subdivision defense made more sense to me than arming every home owner and letting them shoot willey nilley at every threat.

Tanks dont BLEVY unless there is extreme, constant heat. Roughly think how long it takes to boil water and how long that takes. Put that water in a pressure cooker and then see how long. If the overpressure valve is blocked it happens much faster. Shooting a tank basically creates a pressure relief point. No good if it ignites next to your house, or bleeds off highly flammable gas for sure. But movies get out of control with the one shot explosion idea.

For when the liquid heats up in the container, well beyond the vapor escaping or burning, the pressure builds then explodes.
Most common firefighting tactics is to keep water sprayed on the tank to keep it cool, or using foam also, but keep letting the flame burn the liquid squirting out the impact hole. To create one, use Green tips penetrators, followed with tracer fire to ignite the escaping gas. I could see someone sitting on a hill top popping .50 Cal rounds at gasoline tankers driving down the highway, close to a bridge, to close the highway traffic in al directions. Wait till SHTF and all the Goblins will come out of their hidey holes to play.

We all have a good idea of what a riot looks like. Where people are performing acts of violence and where they are trespassing. Then you have to determine the level of force to apply to protect yourself and that is different for each of us.
There could be people running from danger in the streets and you have to consider this. What is done in daylight you can determine but at night is another story. Sneaking around a persons property at night could get you killed. Especially if there is a burning building close by with gun shots in the air.
We don’t know for sure what we will do until we get there. We have a good idea though.

My first line of defense is detection by using Binoculars, motion detectors, night vision and being alert.
Second layer is to snare/entangle. By use of barbed wire or Billy Bob barbed wire.(fish hooks with steel leaders)
Third layer to disable. Things that cut or puncture.
Last layer. To dispatch with overwhelming force.
Catching a treble fishhook in the face or a nail in the foot could discourage many.
But in your situation Mclovin I’d have the .45 on my hip/cocked and locked position, with a mix of one ounce Winchester slugs and low recoil (Ranger) buckshot. They ain’t gonna want to buck nobody with a shotgun. My shotgun is a modified 870 I have a side saddle 4 shell holder that is attached to the receiver. I’ve had the receiver tapped and mounted a rail for a red dot Aimpoint T-1. I’ve put a two round extension tube on the magazine and has a mix of slugs and buckshot. I have no problems shooting through doors, walls nor windows if that’s what it takes. But you might not be able to do that. The .45 is for when they get in real close, too close to wield a shotgun. Get a good sling for the shotgun. Mine is one that utilizes “mash” hooks on both ends (I changed the wood stock on the shotgun for a Magpul with a raised comb for the T-1.) And last but not least, get yourself a good blade.

Braveheart, check out “Blueforce Gear” good well made slings. Also “Savvy Sniper” small, family based maker of slings. I use them both. Tend to lean more to Savvy Sniper. Both good outfits to deal with.

In days gone by I would say do it to them before they do it to you! Now that I’m older and wiser I would say keep you group on a short list with a code that if you are being attacked, and if they can, they can come and back you up. Sounds good. If more than one or two participating, testing should reveal if code needs to be repeated after short pause, to better assure everybody else can readily tell from whom it came from. Experience has shown with anything like this, first round rouses people from whatever they were doing to next start paying better attention to where it’s coming from. That’d be the reason for the repeat.
Also, once hostilities commence, might want to go to 24/7 FRS radio comms, with just brief codes used, in case any others monitoring it.
Yes shane I thought of that, after I hit the submit button. Horn blasts with a Pause, then a repeat again of the signal. Just keep blowing the horn signal until someone else shows up to help. Even using CB Radio to broadcast a neighborhood alert on a specific channel, after a CB Alert Horn warning, to get better details. It would be like your own personal Neighborhood radio station channel. And use a once a month test log in to make sure everybody is on board. Just like the CD Civil Defense horned used to do when I was a kid. And CB does not broadcast very far, to tell the world what’s up. Its way more local.
Another consideration flaw in my situation, is being solo where I am, if for some reason I got hurt, my gates are locked, how would they get in to help me or me even to get to my air horn to send an alert. These days you can get Night Vision all the way up to Gen VII (or so I’ve read, but I’ve never seen any writeups, so I dunno if they exist or not). I’m used to Gen-II, and I’m driven to state that if there is any way “under the sun” that you can manage the bucks to get yourself into ANY KIND OF NIGHTVISION …then you’ll compound your chances of getting through tomorrow and the next days with lots of ‘zeros’, and that’s splendid. You get what you pay for, with the best dependability seeming to hang between $1800.00 through nearly $5 grand, but what’s wrong with the ones that are running in the lows $3’s? Not everyone can go over $10k for a black-gun AR-15. Not that it isn’t tempting, but naw, I don’t wanna pay that kind of interest not to mention the damned “paper trail.”

I have a six foot chain link fence topped with three strand of barbed wire surrounding my property. The (my) ROE’s are if you are inside the fence you are dead. If you are moving past on the outside you are watched (because there is nothing down the road) thru a scope or sights until you are way out of sight and I get radio confirmation you have left the AO. If you are not here in the boonies where I hang my hat you have nothing to worry about from me.
One thing to note, is it is highly likely your encounter is going to be on camera. So if you want to shoot people on sight, don’t be surprised if a few weeks later you’re defending yourself in court based on some footage you didn’t anticipate.
So, yes, warning shots, commands, to begin with, then shoot to end the threat and cease fire. You might think about recording things yourself.

No warning shots. Warning shots are interpreted by the courts as negligently discharging a firearm. The act of firing in the direction of someone, is attempted murder. Only if you are afraid for your life should you use a firearm. Having the confidence to fire a warning shot implies you don’t actually fear for your life. It’s a claim that gets many in trouble.
I do remember a case in Fla where a guy high on bath salts breaks into a couples home, the husband ends up fighting with the guy who’s trying to bite him. The wife runs and gets the gun. The husband is screaming for the wife to shoot him every time he pushes the guy away. The wife just couldn’t shoot him. She emptied the gun essentially drawing a line around the guy on the wall without hitting him. They weren’t warning shots, she just couldn’t do it. The drugged up nut finally freaked out on the floor from the noise in a heap just crying, and stayed there till police arrived. The homeowners weren’t charged, even though the wife could have killed someone in a neighboring house with her negligent shooting.
That said, know your states laws. In some states you can shoot if someone is simply trespassing. Not in my state, we do however have a castle law that says if someone breaks in and you are in fear of your life you can shoot. The law in my state further protects you from an assumption of guilt by the police, so when you contact police make it clear you were in fear of your life and you fired in self defense. Answer no further questions without a lawyer. Insist that state law protects you from “reasonable cause assertions” by police who may insist on searching the rest of your premises for other firearms etc. they don’t have the right as long as you make the “castle law” assertion and immediately observable evidence doesn’t contradict your statement.
Other thoughts, consider owning no treaspassing signs that can be rapidly posted around your property. If someone ignores your sign and trespasses, it raises the crime from simple treaspassing to criminal trespassing. Lock your doors, make them break in. If someone walks in you may have trouble justifying deadly force.
Consider having pepper spray. As well the fire extinguisher mentioned in the article could be used to mark and deter a crowd. If nonleathal methods fail to turn away a group, it lends credence to the need for deadly force because you fear for your life. It gives you that extra step if you confront a group who respond with what are you going to shoot unarmed people? Pepper spray them and consider leathal force for any that fail to turn and run. Most pepper spray has a UV dye that marks attackers for the police to arrest.
The idea of rioters coming to the suburbs is unlikely, they would need thransportation, and without a mob to hide in, rioters just never have the confidence to keep going. Unless Soros is going to rent BLM busses, and they can get on the bus without burning it down, they just aren’t going anywhere they can’t walk to. And I don’t see public transportation sitting still while dozens of violent BLM folk with bats, knives, clubs, guns, signs etc start piling on a bus to the burbs.

I live in a somewhat rural county with a pop. of 55,000. With a large percentage(90% plus) of residents being white and armed, I do not believe this kind of crap would last long where I live. However, I work 25 minutes away in a city of 50,000+. That would be my fear of being stuck at work or grocery shopping and something like this happening. Millions of black people alive today could not have witnessed lynchings. In the 75 years ending in 1950, less than 4,000 lynchings occurred. Millions witnessing them would have been impossible.
The other forms of discrimination depended on where you lived. In the 1950s in my town, you could hardly push your way through the crowds of black people shopping in all the stores downtown. Of course, there was one restaurant that didn’t want black customers inside, but the city shut it down. They had to move out of town. Funny thing is, the location is now in town, and their address is MLK Blvd., although the original owner died a few years ago and descendants run it now.
In raw numbers, there are about an equal number of white and black people getting welfare, but a much higher percentage of black people based on population. White people get denied a lot, either because of reverse racism or because the white families actually have a father with enough self-respect to stay with his wife and children.
I used to work in stores and saw very few white people with food stamps, but most of the black people had them. And like most of the other people posting on this site, I have stood in line behind black people buying steaks with food stamps when all I could afford was hamburger.

And LBJ’s voting rights act of the early 60s is now over 50 years ago, and the troops called into Little Rock even older, so if that is the demarcation for Jim Crow, it is only those folks who are over 60 who lived in the south. Black population in 2000, according to the US Census was 12.1% of the total population, incidentally.

“Africans sold their own people as slaves” is a stock argument White Americans use when the subject of slavery comes up.

As a moral argument it fails too:

One of the best home upgrades you can do is replace your builder-grade interior doors with good solid doors. I did my place for less than $1200, which was 11 doors and included three exterior-grade doors for the garage/house/laundry interface and the master bedroom. These all got deadbolts as well as locking knobs.
I like to think it improves the security a bit, and the sound levels between rooms is much reduced.
Smokey – we live in a forest fire prone area, so one upgrade that was easy to justify was replacing the vinyl siding on our house with hardy board (concrete and wood fiber) which is fire proof. So whether is it forest fire or Molotov cocktail we will be better off. Also have sprinklers and garden hose ready to go to place on the roof in a moments notice.
Consider hurricane film on windows, for at least the first floor. I added 8 mil security/hurricane film when there was a threat from an employee my wife had to lay off. It can stop a 2×4 moving at 60mph.
The idea for me was to keep out a home invader. I have three sliders and they are all easy entry points, just smash the glass. As well two sliders and the front door provide a nexus point access to the core of my house. Security film makes those sliding doors lousy entry points. The bad guy will make tons of noise breaking in, and it will take much longer than the bad guy expects. The unexpected is your force multiplier.
There is better film that can stop bullets, but that version is big pricey. I’ve considered that for the master bedroom, and my library/ data room.
I’m reminded of the CA police hunting their own rouge cop. Anytime they thought they had him cornered they shot incendiary tear gas rounds into the building that burned the building down. I’ve been wanting to do this. My master bedrooms main wall is the two story entry foyers second floor, an attacker could shoot through the wall, but they’d need ladders or to fly to get through. The other walls adjoin the bathroom with plumbing mirrors counters and cabinets, again not real easy to get through.
The door is the weak link, so I like your idea. I can certainly precisely cut the door to save the pretty facia that match all the other doors. I’d go for a sheet oak ply. Ply stinks to attach hinges to, so the entire internal door frame would need to be replaced and reinforced. It’s a lot of work.
Would my finished product be stronger than a fiberglass door? Which would be hardest to get through?

Anyway, since we never took into account such a thing, we’ve added to the numbers of ‘used brass casings’ and available primers, etc. I’m unsure how much more one may need but I figure another 5,000 or so can’t hurt, and I’ll still have reserve for building nearly as many again, if the brass survives (and it always has except for the well-know POS casings some companies use …yet they have been weeded out I hope).
For me, I prefer to get NATO 7.62x51mm’s “as found”, bagged up and sent to me. I’ll ‘swager’ the primer, super-clean with stainless-media in a tumbler (until it’s beautiful), set the length (OAL), load up a primer into a ‘bed’ of 50 casings, carefully powder them up then taper those bullets into place (with whichever method is recommended for you). NATO brass is thicker by nature and take 15% less than a commercial .308, yet most reloaders often prefer using one less grain (depending) or even less. Of course, this makes heavy brass take little or no stress. Many of my NATO’s have been loaded up over 35 times, while NO commercial casing has ever lasted that long for me before splitting (and I anneal every time), all calibers …it does make a difference to perfectionists. 🙂

If there’s civil unrest in the streets, then your kids should not be told to leave their schools or other place of safety and come home where the civil unrest is. If one looks at Iraq, Libya and the US / Saudi Arabia campaign to overthrow Assad in Syria one could infer that there is a systematic effort to intentionally destabilize nations in the Middle East. In considering your response not only to people like this one, but to the threat others taking her advice may pose to you and yours should they show up in your particular “hood”, keep some things in mind…
1. CIVIL UNREST IS USUALLY SHORT LIVED. Sure, it looks like Mad Max while it’s happening, but so far rule of law has sooner or later stepped back in and re-established itself. Why consider this? Consider it because what you do is very likely to be evaluated by LEO’s, District Attorneys, etc. Some are good, some not so much. Those LEO’s and D.A.’s might leave you swinging in the breeze in an effort to pacify the public (or one segment of the public). When I was with the Sheriff’s Department, I personally saw innocent people get hung out to dry.
Even if you are completely “in the right” and totally justified from a legal standpoint, remember… that doesn’t matter to folks like this. Many of the “victims” of shootings that started the many riots we have seen lately were far from innocent. In fact, many of them were shot during the commission of a felony, felonious assault, etc. That didn’t matter- the TRUTH didn’t matter. It was used as an excuse to riot and later as an excuse to go after people. And let us not forget that there are certain “groups” that seem to have carte blanch from the establishment to do whatever they please with little or no consequence. I dare say most of us don’t belong to any of those groups. So before you start “aiming for the head” or “shooting center mass” you might want to consider if what you are planning as a response is going to be defensible when ROL crawls back into play. Self defense and the defense of other innocents from imminent attack that a reasonable person would believe was likely to cause death or serious injury is usually a heck of allot easier to defend than dropping someone busting the windows out of a car parked down the street from your house.
Sometimes, the law and the courts have nothing to do with right or wrong. Sometimes, they’re only concerned with the law and politics.
2. YOU CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. You can’t tell a good cop from a bad one at a glance. Not all blacks are bad, not all whites are good. The actions of a person are the only means to judge if they are a threat. We all know it, just don’t forget it. It’s not a specific skin color, it’s a belief system, a subscription to a certain culture. There were other races at most of those riots. BLM and other groups have supporters from all races. Remember the NAACP leader who was a white female that had lied and passed for black for years??? It wasn’t her skin color, it was her belief system!
3. GET OUT OF THE CITIES AND SUBURBS. I know this is not possible for everyone, but have you seriously tried? I spent YEARS remodeling a house in the ‘burbs. We loved it, but the area was going down hill. Too many “entitlement” folks moving into the area, Memphis (one of the MOST violent, racist, crime ridden cities in the U.S.A.) just a stones throw away. Crime was starting to go up, and property values were going down.
We’re in debt, allot going on, definitely NOT that “perfect time” to run out and buy another house. But that is exactly what we did. We bought a slightly run down house waaaaaaay out in the country with some land and a pond, and sold the house in the ‘burbs that we loved.
Why? Because that “perfect” day to do it was never going to get here. I can fix up this house too and we are much safer here than we ever could have been back there; no matter how many firearms we had and how much training we went through. It’s a numbers game folks – just math. If there are allot of the “entitlement crowd” living near you, it’s past time to move on. Sooner or later, they aren’t going to be content with destroying just the neighborhoods they live in and near. They’re going to figure out that it’s better for them to head for more affluent areas, outside their neighborhoods and even the cities. If this idea catches on sooner rather than later (because I believe it is inevitably going to catch on) then time is shorter than you think! The suburbs are where the thugs are going to go for their fun.
Sure, most of us remember seeing the Korean store owners and their families on the roofs of their stores with AK’s during the L.A. riots. And yes, those stores weren’t looted or burned. That was in the 1990’s. Not sure how well that’s going to fly with law enforcement today though.
