Editor’s Note: The back and forth struggle for territorial hegemony may soon be coming to a head on the Eastern Front. Earlier this week national security adviser Susan Rice warned that Russian troop intervention in the Ukraine would be a “grave mistake,” and that the issue of Ukraine should be left to the people of that country. “This is not about the U.S. and Russia,” noted Rice. But with recent analysis suggesting that the U.S. played a role in February’s Ukranian revolution, it’s clear that this is exactly what it’s about.
Ukraine is said to be where Russian civilization began. That, coupled with the fact that the Carpathian Mountains are a key strategic defense barrier for invasion and that Russia has had a long-standing naval base in Crimea, one would be hard-pressed to believe that Vladimir Putin will simply let the Ukraine fall to western influence. 12 Signs That Russia Is Ready To Fight A War Over Crimea

Russia will never, ever give up Crimea without a fight. Anyone that thinks otherwise is just being delusional. TheRussian Black Sea fleet’s main base at Sevastopol is far too strategically important. In addition, ethnic Russians make up approximately 60 percent of the population of Crimea, and most of the population is rabidly pro-Russian. In fact, many prominent Crimean politicians are already calling for reunification with Russia. So if you have been thinking that Russia is just going to fold up shop and go home now that pro-European protesters have violently seized power in Kiev, you can quit holding your breath. The truth is that Russia is more than willing to fight a war over Crimea. And considering the fact that vitally important pipelines that pump natural gas from Russia to the rest of Europe go right through Ukraine, it is not likely that Russia will just willingly hand the rest of Ukraine over to the U.S. and the EU either. If the U.S. and the EU push too hard in Ukraine, a major regional war may erupt which could ultimately lead to something much larger.
Russia and Ukraine have very deep historical ties. Most Americans may not think that Ukraine is very important, but the Russians consider Ukraine to be of the utmost strategic importance.
As an American, how would you feel if another nation funded and organized the violent overthrow of the democratically-elected Canadian government and replaced it with a government that was virulently anti-American?
By doing this to Ukraine, the United States and the EU are essentially sticking a pin in Russia’s eye. Needless to say, Russia is extremely angry at this point and they are gearing up for war.
The following are 12 signs that Russia is ready to fight a war over Crimea…
#1 More Russian military vehicles continue to pour into Crimea. Just check out this video.
#2 Russian military vehicles have been photographed in the main square of Sevastopol.
#3 Russian military jets near the border with Ukraine have been put on combat alert.
#4 Russia has ordered “surprise military exercises” along the Ukrainian border.
#5 In connection with those “exercises”, it is being reported that Russia has deployed 150,000 troops along the border with Ukraine.
#6 Russia already has approximately 26,000 troops stationed at their naval base in Sevastopol.
#7 Russian ships carrying additional soldiers have been spotted off the coast of Crimea…
Russia’s large landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov has arrived near the Russia Black Sea Fleet’s base at Sevastopol, which Russia has leased from Ukraine since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The ship is reported to be carrying as many as 200 soldiers and has joined four additional ships carrying an unknown amount of Special Forces troops. Flot.com also reported over the weekend that personnel from the 45th Airborne Special Forces unit and additional divisions had been airlifted into Anapa, a city on Russia’s Black Sea coastline.
#8 Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made the following statement to reporters on Wednesday…
“Measures are taken to guarantee the security of our facilities.”
#9 An unidentified Russian official has told the Financial Times that Russia is willing to use military force to protect Crimea…
Moscow earlier revealed that it would be ready to go for war over the Crimea region in order to protect the large population and army installations.
“If Ukraine breaks apart, it will trigger a war. They will lose Crimea first [because] we will go in and protect [it], just as we did in Georgia,” an unidentified Russian official told the Financial Times.
#10 Officials in Sevastopol have “installed” a Russian citizen as mayor of the city.
#11 Approximately 120 pro-Russian gunmen have seized the Crimean parliament building and have raised the Russian flag.
#12 There are rumors that Russian authorities have offered protection to ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych…
Viktor F. Yanukovych, the ousted president of Ukraine, declared on Thursday that he remained the lawful president of the country and appealed to Russia to “secure my personal safety from the actions of extremists.” Russian news agencies reported that he had already arrived in Russia, but officials did not immediately confirm that.
No matter what the “new government” in Kiev says, and no matter how hard the U.S. and the EU push, Russia will never give up Crimea. The following is what a recent Debka article had to say about the matter…
There is no way that President Vladimir Putin will relinquish Russian control of the Crimean peninsula and its military bases there – or more particularly the big Black Sea naval base at Sevastopol. This military stronghold is the key to Russia’s Middle East policy. If it is imperiled, so too are Russia’s military posture in Syria and its strategic understandings with Iran.
And you know what?
The people of Crimea do not want Russia to leave either. In fact, they overwhelmingly want Russia to help defend them against the “new government” in Kiev.
As you read this, militia groups are being formed in Crimea to fight back against the “nationalist invasion” that they are anticipating. Just check out the following excerpt from a recent Time Magazine article…
Many of the people at the rally in Sevastopol were not just ready to believe. They were convinced of theimminent nationalist invasion. What scared them most were the right-wing political parties and militant groups that have played a role in Ukraine’s revolution. “What do you think they’re going to do with all those weapons they seized from police in Kiev? They’re going to come here and make war,” said Sergei Bochenko, who identified himself as the commander of a local militia group in Sevastopol called the Southern Russian Cossack Battalion.
In preparation, he said, his group of several hundred men had armed themselves with assault rifles and begun to train for battle. “There’s not a chance in hell we’re going to accept the rule of that fascist scum running around in Kiev with swastikas,” he said. That may be overstating the case. Nowhere in Ukraine has the uprising involved neo-Nazi groups, and no swastikas have appeared on the revolution’s insignia. But every one of the dozen or so people TIME spoke to in Sevastopol was certain that the revolt was run by fascists, most likely on the payroll of the U.S. State Department.
And just remember what happened back in 2008 in South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The Russians have already shown that they are not afraid to militarily intervene in order to protect Russian citizens.
So what would the U.S. and the EU do if a war erupts between Russia and Ukraine?
Would they risk a direct military confrontation with Russia in order to help Ukraine?
I am very concerned about where all of this could be heading.

@ Hunter. We are totally screwed if Russia, China, or anyone decides to EMP the country. This would be more of a punishment to the country and not so much a military objective. Still, WTF is the U.S. or anyone doing over there? Look like BO and the bankers are falling back on the old notion that the military can solve the economic mega woes of a country. Yes, people often seem to forget about the “lowly” EMPs when discussing threats in favor of more exotic things. It would pay to remember that all it would take for an EMP attack is access to a decent nuke or three and a few million dollars. Neither of those is a problem for Russia.
Additionally, there are a lot of people who speculate about the US doing “false flags” all over the place. For my money, I’d say that yes, there may have been a few, but not nearly as many as conspiracy theorists would have us believe. But we should not in any way believe that Russia or other state actors are incapable of them, either.
I don’t know enough to know whether the deal in Crimea is actually an existential threat to Russia, but I do believe that it is far more a concern for them than it is for us, and I believe that they probably might BELIEVE it is existential for them. Existential threats make people crazy, and makes them do crazy things. And we have a lightweight in the white house who seems to think nothing of drawing red lines and otherwise provoking people. Great.
If I was Putin or another high-up Russian and I actually believed that this was really important to Russia, and I thought Obama would actually push this thing in a way that would truly threaten Russia…I’d simply send some Spetznaz (scrubbed of all ID of course and disguised as plain sailors) on a container ship full of scrap metal or something.
I’d send it on a course much like what Iran seems to be doing. I’d actually send maybe three, one off the east coast, one off the west coast and one in the Gulf of Mexico. I’d probably flag the ship from a ME country and have all the sailors be swarthy and maybe have beards. Each ship would have a good EMP nuke built with materials that couldn’t be traced to a Russian breeder reactor (stolen, bought, whatever) and they would maintain absolute radio silence. At a precise designated time I’d have them launch, scuttle the ships immediately with a big explosion to get rid of evidence and get on Russian subs bound for home.
All of this would be incredibly cheap and straightforward, Russia would have plausible deniability and it would send us back to the 1800s for at least a few years. Who knows how long it would take us to get back to the year 2000? Who even knows how long it would take for our population to stabilize?
And we wouldn’t be bothering much with what Russia is doing for a good long time. We wouldn’t be able to afford overseas military adventures at all. We might not even be able to bring back the guys who are already over there.
And nobody outside the US should be partying too hard at ridding themselves of the hegemon, either. Once countries and other actors really understood that the US were out of commission it would be Pirates of the Caribbean for real, and worldwide.
Chaos is far nearer than most people seem to think…and in the middle of a very harsh winter I can’t yet get my wife to see the wisdom of moving somewhere warmer before the lights go out. One of us is crazy and I’m not even sure which one.

If somehow Ukraine were to successfully break away from Russia’s sphere of influence, then leaving aside the wisdom of that, by default it looks to me like it would become a European parliamentary democracy with a welfare state. We can’t afford to help financially in any way, and that’s pretty much that. Which means, of course, that most likely there would be a nearly immediate bailout from USTreas. Within an hour Obama’s top people would on it, figuring out ways to divert cash and defend in court the fact that they didn’t talk with congress about it first.

Nobody “liked” the Brits either 100 years ago, or the Spaniards 500 years ago…but they kept the seaways open and kept the pirates somewhat at bay. Joe Schmoe merchant trying to run his trading company in, say, Bankok or Mumbai or Tripoli or Rio has a MAJOR problem with pirates if there is not a dominant power that the bad guys are afraid of. Pax Americana, Pax Brittania or Pax Espanola, it doesn’t matter much to the little guys of the world so long as it’s not Pax Pirata. Without the dominant power, trade–and therefore wealth and standard of living for pretty much everybody–is out the window.
If you’re not an American don’t make the mistake that all of us are Ugly Americans or that all of us are trying to lord it over the rest of you (though there are some of those here as everywhere). It really, deeply sucks in some ways to be top dog on the world stage. We’re just trying to keep the trains running smoothly for the most part. We’re sucking at it lately too and our population is getting fat, dumb and happy, so maybe it *is* time for a change. It may be China’s turn to take the helm, though they’ve got a whole raft of issues of their own to deal with before they can be good in that role. But they had that role for a long time before Europe took it, so there’s a precedent.
Me? I’d just as soon hand our role to whoever is willing to take it and become just one more regional power in a world full of them. Given our legacy military we’d probably keep our area cleaner of riffraff than most and therefore do better than most for trade and tourism, at least for the remainder of my natural lifetime…but there are a lot of areas in the world (I suspect including the periphery of Europe and the Med and most of the Indian Ocean) that would wake up fairly soon and wish we were back in the saddle once they see what life without Pax Americana (or at least Pax Somebody) really entails.
I live in the United States and I love the land of the US. I don’t group all Americans together. But the hypocrisy is that while Americans don’t want others to group them together, Americans themselves group others together such as (formerly) the Germans, than the Japanese, than Vietnamese, than Russians, and especially now, Americans group all Muslims together with radicals. They all faced discrimination.

One of the biggest problems for the West if WWIII starts is technology. We have X amount of Military equipment and hardware with a definable amount of munitions. Unfortunately most of our tanks, planes, helicopters, missile platform or ship systems or whatever, take too long to build and are over technical. To replace lost equipment on a global battle field will be logistically impossible for the west to maintain for any length of time. When the logistical supply chain stops, so does your army.
In WWII the Germans had the exact same problem. They built the best and most advanced equipment they could. Quality over quantity. Top equipment but limited in numbers. The US however pumped out war materials faster than Chinese sweatshops do today. Lower tech equipment than the Germans but 10 x more of it. Therefore if we lost 50 tanks in an afternoon there were100 more tanks right behind with more crews to replace the lost 50 by the next day.
We’d loose on the logistical supply hands down in WWIII. We can fight an unlimited global action for a few days or weeks, but considering our manufacturing ability today we’d be done in 6-12 months. But I’m talking about a real war here, not a counterinsurgency war like Iraq or Afghanistan that can keep plodding along year after year with absolutely no result whatsoever.
Fighting men … And woman, would need to number in the millions. China can call up 200 million soldiers easy, probably more. Russia has …. 20 million men/woman of suitable military age? We could say manage 10% of the population or around 35 million.
Aircraft Carriers of WWIII will be like the Battleships of WWII. Obsolete!!! So don’t count on them to save your ass. If we/they use Nukes it’ll be limited, like the super smallest nukes we have. If it does go all out thermal nuclear …. Don’t worry about a thing, relax, you’ll hardly realise it happened. We’ll look like the planet Mars.

The more that I read in the foreign press the more I realize our news networks here at home are lying to us by omitting key facts in this crisis and others. Would it not be relevant for them to tell us about the fact that the “Right Sector” which is a Nazi organization tied directly to the Chechen separatist’s Muslim leadership is the primary driving force in the Ukrainian uprising? Or that all of the populist leaders of the uprising, the one that sustained it through its darkest hours and who had the backing of the majority were simply pushed aside once they were no longer needed and a new dictator installed? The news outlets all, regardless of political inclinations, are expeditiously glossing over these critical facts. Why? Because they believe us to be mindless fools.
Putin is thug and I despise all that he stands for but am simply not willing to spend American blood and treasure in a war in his back yard. Where is our moral high ground? Where is our mantel of liberty and freedom for us to wrap ourselves in to justify us getting involved in this conflict? We don’t have one to wear because we are increasingly living under tyranny here at home. Who are we to dictate? Who are we dictate, the self determination of other nations when we have squandered our own freedoms here at home?
I love liberty more than life and wish it for all men including the Ukrainians and the Russians. But until we are once again the shining city on a hill that Reagan spoke of we simply do not have the support of the world or the internal fortitude to sustain such an effort. Are we to believe that a President that abandoned our hard won gains from 10 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan will lead the army’s of democracy to victory against Russia??? Hell he didn’t even have the stones to get us some cheap oil from Iraq after thousands of our soldiers died liberating them from Saddam Hussein. He gladly handed over both countries to enemies such as Al Qaeda, Iran and Pakistan for nothing more than votes here at home. He has proven an ability to use the blood of American soldiers who willingly served, as nothing more than coins to bribe those that would support him.
And what will happen to our liberty here at home while our soldiers are tied up over there fighting? What will happen to our economy and how would we ever fund such a war? Are they going to ask us to buy war bonds? Will they confiscate all privately held gold like FDR did? Can we expect that we would emerge from the other side with our Republic intact? And how will we provide the armaments to fight such a war if it expands? Ask China to build us tanks, missiles and planes? It’s not like we have any factories left to send Rosie the riveter to work in and I doubt China is in the mood to loan us another 17 trillion bucks.
Maybe under another administration that had the moral clarity and intestinal fortitude for such an endeavor. Maybe under an administration that showed respect for the Constitution, the rule of law and the limitations of his own powers. Maybe under an administration that had a leader of character that the people could put an ounce of faith in. But not under this one. My warrior spirit and my prayers go out the Ukrainian and Russian people that they may shrug off Putin’s yoke and live long lives basking in the rays of liberties light. But my eyes are affixed here at home wondering what we are going to do to reject tyranny on our own doorstep and I simply cannot justify averting elsewhere.

You mention my references to Iraq and Afghanistan and you are right we should never have gone into Iraq in the first place. The point that I was making was that, since we were already there and so many of our soldiers spilled blood it should not have been squandered and it should not have been left as a safe haven to those that wish to kill us all. If we had a time machine we could go back and fix the mistakes of the past but since we don’t we should not have compounded them by leaving a vacuum for our enemies to fill and should have at least gotten an oil deal out of it. Or would you rather that our government just waste lives for no gain?
Afghanistan is a different story. We were directly attacked but the response should have been limited to a rapid and extremely violent action against those that attacked us and then we should have left. I was about a half mile from the World Trade Center on 9/11, close enough to feel the concussion and radiant heat from the impact of the planes. I witnessed with my own eyes an entire neighborhood full of muslims in Jersey City dancing in the streets from the other side of a line of riot police. I’ve stared their evil in the eye, have you? Regardless of whether or not all the theories about 9/11 are true or not, blood needed to be spilled in response to that horror show of a day. That act could not go unanswered but we should have been smarter than to be drawn into a protracted nation building exercise.

Well said but I will add that there was another dimension to both Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2002 I had the opportunity to sit down for drinks with a 2 star General that was at the time the CO of an infantry division. I had serious reservations about the war and asked him about why were we going into Iraq. He explained to me that the basic strategy of both wars was to contain Iran. By putting armies on their eastern and western boarders as well as controlling the Arabian Gulf while at the same time pushing hard sanctions the thoughts were that we could cause their Islamic government to collapse from within. Thereby preventing a much bigger regional conflict that was feared would occur if they were not deposed. It actually worked but a year too late. In 2009 when the Green Revolution finally occurred we unfortunately had a new administration that let them die in the streets at the hands of the Ayatollahs as opposed to supporting them. I’m not saying that the wars were right to do or not, but that is what was in the minds of the Bush administration at the time. As well as oil and rare earth minerals.
Don’t forget that the military was told whatever they wanted to tell them. Do you think our military would go invade Afghanistan, had they just been told that we were only their to protect our OPIUM interests? Maybe, maybe not, but the troops usually have to find out the truth the hard way.

People who understand military matters know there are not many fighting forces on planet earth that can actually wage hot war and win. Yes, the world is awash with armaments and armies but few countries can actually deploy this power in a hot, killing war. To do that, several factors are required:
1) Historical memory of war-fighting and war victories.
2) An advanced capability in strategic and tactical thought.
3) An ability to innovate in military technologies, not just in times of peace, but in times of war and crisis.
4) A cultural stomach for killing others and an ability, equally, to take heavy casualties in the pursuit of national goals.
5) An ability to organize society around the achievement of military objectives. If in a pinch, the ability to carry out Total War to the end and victory.

Topped off the freezer, purchased coffee beans, and added some canning jars. I can not spend much time worrying about the Ukraine because there is much to do. Then I didn’t get incoming.
So, tech received a notice my email was CUT OFF!!!
I was pegged for excessive spamming–yep.
The tech said someone stole my email password and spammed repeatedly and this must have happened when at first I couldn’t get out that day.
In 14 years, I have never had a reason to give my email password—it was hacked and used for spamming.
I had to use a new password after 14 years.

Off Topic For the Veterans:
Worried about you veterans….have been reading post from many veterans re: blue, white, black trucks, all with very dark tinted windows following them, parking in front of their houses, doing drive by’s slowly. Most of these veterans live in out of the way places and off the beaten path. One vet talks about seeing the same truck in front of his house and parked across the street from his work place, same truck, several times. Scuttlebutt is they are looking to take out veterans quietly.

I had a very unsettling experience today and I am reporting this event in case any one has heard from any other Veterans any reports concerning blue Ford pick up trucks. I read some months ago that when the Veteran hit teams go out that the teams would be traveling in blue Ford pick up trucks in the rural areas of America and stopping the Veterans to ask them for directions (and then killing them).
I remember that these blue Ford pick ups would be equipped with up links to facial recognition software data bases for target verification. The alert also included advice for Veterans to vary their schedules and not to travel with cell phones.
Well I walk every day about the same time (until today!).
Today I went out, except I had a couple of paper targets rolled up and was on my way to put these targets up where my husband and I target shoot.
On my normal route, I stopped and stared up at an orange/ reddish drone (?) or plane that hoovered above my position and then sped off. I couldn’t tell what size or altitude it was, it just caught my attention because it was flying so slowly and then seemed to stop above me- also it’s odd color and bulbous shape.
My husband met me at the targets.
As we were walking back to the house, a darn blue Ford pick up pulled in to the end of the dead end road we were about to walk by (right where I had looked up at the drone/ plane thing. Had it run my features through facial recognition software?). The truck turned around before we could see the driver and drove back through the near by neighborhood. It did not stop at any of the houses and I have walked through that area and never saw a blue ford pick up parked in any one’s driveway. I notice every blue Ford pick up since that alert.
I’ve lived here almost two years and have only seen 3 vehicles there and every time the driver stopped and chatted- whether I was shooting or not shooting. I felt like the driver was surprised to see two people instead of one.
My husband was not with me when I hung the targets and had that plane/ drone hoover over me- about the same time I go up to walk every day.
The truck was turning around there at about the time it would have taken me to do a normal day’s walk and be passing that spot on my way back to the house.
I hope I am over-reacting, but I thought I’d send this out in case any one has heard similar reports.

A portion of the monies fell into the hands of Pravy Sektor, a neo-Nazi, ultra-nationalist militia. This Militia was the catalyst that took the somewhat peaceful protests and morphed them into civil insurrection.
So yes, once again the good ole’ USA has funded another civil war. You can be assured that Putin’s intelligence apparatus in Ukraine was fully aware of the US’s meddling in Ukrainian internal affairs.
This is Putin’s way of saying “Don’t fuck with me.”

What will happen? Nothing. Russia will take Ukraine. The US will make threats of intervention, but realistically just can’t. We don’t have the money. That’s why we continually see military cuts. The rumors about a “hollow force” are true. Russia knows it, they recognize the signs and remember the same things happening in their country near the end of the Cold War. They’ve recovered, we’re near the breaking point.
