This article was written by Michael Snyder and originally published at his End of the American Dream blog.

Editor’s Comment: Apparently, they are serious. Hollywood has dredged it up as a common threat from beyond – from Armageddon to Deep Impact and more – the fear of an asteroid or meteor hitting the planet and unleashing hellish destruction has entered the public psyche. And now government’s are beefing up budgets to plan for the contingency of such an event – even as fellow experts swear there’s no threat of an approaching impact for 100 years.

What is really going on, and what man-made mischief can/will make a ‘long shot’ threat into an imminent and disastrous one? Combine this one with the looming threat of an EMP attack, and mankind will be increasingly meddling with the space territory in his reach to weaponize and defend against terrible possibilities.

NASA Creates A ‘Planetary Defense Coordination Office’ That Will Track Meteors Headed Toward Earth

    by Michael Snyder

Why is NASA suddenly so concerned about meteors and asteroids hitting the Earth? After telling us that “no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years” last year, NASA is now spending millions of dollars to set up a “Planetary Defense Coordination Office” that will be headed up by a designated “Planetary Defense Officer”. According to NASA, more than 13,500 near Earth objects have been found so far, and another 1,500 new NEOs are being discovered each year. Approximately 10 percent of all near Earth objects are one kilometer or larger in size, and if one of those giant space rocks ever hit us, it would likely be considered an “extinction level event”. It makes sense that NASA would be concerned about this threat, but why now?

The announcement of this new office was made on Friday, and very few mainstream news outlets covered it. But I did find this story on CNBC

If and when the interplanetary asteroid apocalypse comes, NASA plans to be prepared.

In a little noticed move this week, the space agency announced that it had created a directorate for “detecting and tracking near earth objects (NEOs).”

The new Planetary Defense Coordination Office—which, despite its science fiction-sounding name, is part of a very real effort to ward off the potentially deadly impact of asteroids that may hit the planet—is charged with supervising “all NASA-funded projects to find and characterize asteroids and comets that pass near Earth’s orbit around the sun.”

Of course once again NASA played down the idea that there is any sort of “imminent threat” during the announcement of this new program, but if there is no threat why go to so much trouble and effort?

According to the Washington Times, one of the things that this new Planetary Defense Coordination Office will be focusing on is a way to “redirect” potentially dangerous asteroids…

The office is also developing long-term planetary defense goals. They include “asteroid redirect” concepts that could could push the threatening object off course and away from Earth – a program also of interest to the European Space Agency. NASA is poised for the worst case scenario as well.

“Even if intervention is not possible, NASA would provide expert input to FEMA about impact timing, location, and effects to inform emergency response operations. In turn, FEMA would handle the preparations and response planning related to the consequences of atmospheric entry or impact to U.S. communities,” the space agency noted.

So why is this happening now?

Do they know something that they aren’t telling the rest of us?

Last year, we learned that NASA had teamed up with the National Nuclear Security Administration to figure out a way to use nuclear weapons to “nudge a large asteroid off course”. The following comes from an article in the New York Times about this effort…

The two agencies — NASA and the National Nuclear Security Administration — have long studied such threats on their own. They have surveyed the cosmic debris, designed rocket interceptors and run supercomputer simulations to see if a nuclear blast could nudge a large asteroid off course.

In interviews, federal officials and private experts said the new interagency agreement would deepen the levels of expert cooperation and governmental planning, ultimately increasing the chances of a successful deflection.

“It’s a big step forward,” said Kevin Greenaugh, a senior official at the nuclear security agency. “Whenever you have multiple agencies coming together for the common defense, that’s news.”

Someone over at NASA sure does seem concerned about these things all of a sudden.

After all these years, why have asteroids and meteors become such a high priority?

Something does not seem quite right, because NASA has been insisting that there is absolutely no threat in the foreseeable future. This is something that I covered in a previous article. According to NASA, “no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years”

A NASA spokesman said: “NASA knows of no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with Earth, so the probability of a major collision is quite small.

“In fact, as best as we can tell, no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years.”

At a time when the federal budget is very tight and many federal agencies cannot get money that they desperately need, for some reason the sky is the limit for tracking dangerous meteors. In fact, CNBC says that funding related to tracking NEOs is now more than ten times higher than it was when Barack Obama first entered the White House…

NASA said that the recently passed fiscal year 2016 federal budget included some $50 million for observing NEOs and the new PDCO—a more than tenfold increase in funding since President Barack Obama took office.

But of course there is nothing to worry about according to NASA.

They assure us that no large object is going to hit our planet “in the next several hundred years”.

They are telling us that they have everything under control and that we should all remain calm.

    So do you believe them?

      1. NASA ?, that’s the guys who have never been on the moon and with all this fake pics from ´´ Planet Earth ´´ ?

Stick to your -collapse economy- Michael that’s better for you .. there you have a lot of experience

        • Good thing the oil sector has collapsed. NASA can hire all the laid off oil drillers to drill the hole in the asteroid before placing the nuke.

          • The answer is in the article: “… 1,500 new NEOs are being discovered each year. Approximately 10 percent of all near Earth objects are one kilometer or larger in size, ”

That is 150 1k or larger new objects each year. Any one could have a disasterous orbit.

            • Exactly. Besides, upping the budget by 10x since Obama first got into office doesn’t mean much when you consider just how few people were dedicated to it at that time (maybe 10, world wide). Up until recently a lot of NEO’s were being discovered by hobbyists and purely by accident by scientists analyzing days or weeks of photographic data by hand. Today it can be done much more efficiently by computer. So I don’t get too concerned when I hear things like this. It likely means nothing other than a reallocation of resources onto a pet project that should, logically, be a priority in the first place.

      2. Plan for the worst and pray for the best.

Ok so what we have something that can take out what ever is coming from outer space. Build it. It will put people to work.

We should remain calm. We people can’t do a thing to stop it from hitting us so let NASA do it.

        This is just fear porn.

        Sgt.

      3. “It makes sense that NASA would be concerned about this threat, but why now?”

They need our continued Tax Dollars to keep them functioning.

NASA = (Never A Straight Answer)

As usual, it all boils down to business. (more taxation)

        Fear Porn – Doom & Gloom – False Prophesy’s = Big Business.

Why worry about an Asteroid(s) when skeptics say Nibiru/Planet X is suppose to be showing it’s ugly existence any moment now … lol

      4. Sounds like a way to get a nuke in space.
        Duck and cover.

      5. What they are planning has everything to do with the apocalypse. But it’s not the asteroids they are really after.

      6. Hey, that was my idea.In fact i wrote the DOD!!! and was told not to worry. They had it covered.

      7. some scientists noticed something in outer space but don’t want to place fear on mankind. Revealation did mention a star or asteriod to fall on earth when WW3 breaks loose to stop nuclear from destroying earth.

        • This makes absolutely no sense at all.

“Revealation did mention a star or asteriod to fall on earth when WW3 breaks loose to stop nuclear from destroying earth.”

So … what you are saying is. An Asteroid/Star impact will not harm/damage or destroy the Earth?

You do realize – an event like that will destroy the Earth just as much as all the Nukes being deployed or worse?

I’m sorry, but it appears you need some different reading material that will actually benefit you in the long run.

          • its called the ball of redemption to cleanse the earth, an absolute killer comet or asteriod that will wipe out 3/4 of mankind by detonating stored nuclear warheads & producing global winter like climate covering the whole earth in darkness.

      8. Nibiru / Planet 7X will be in front of Earth on March 26, 2016. Not much time to prepare.

        • Robbie41 NASA said, no asteroid or comet is on a collision course.Nothing was mentioned about a planet. However!!! ALL the nukes in all the country’s used together would not change the trajectory of a planet that size, not even a smidge. So I’M looking forward to seeing the (7-X CLASS CRUISER)IN MARCH.

          Another Date Prediction?

Okedoke – I’ll be outside with my camera taking some quality hi-def photo’s.

      9. Yeah I remember this part from Armageddon. Then the scientist talks about trusting a guy who got a C- in astrophysics and there’s that line about your wife opening your Ketchup bottles after you blow your fingers off.

      10. This is all a hoax to bilk the american taxpayer of hard earned money. There is no asteroid and there is no space program. It’s all a liel.

      11. Lets strap Obama to a nuke and launch him into space.

      12. What this thread needs is Preparation H. It works great for asteroids.

      13. Perhaps the meteor explosion over Russia spooked them a little. Had it been over a large city it could have been a disaster. Nobody saw that coming. I remember watching a documentary on the Discovery or Learning Channel a while back and they stated that since the 70’s over 100 meteor explosions in the atmosphere that would have had the explosive impact of a nuclear device, so they have known for a long time that a large rock could get close before we could see it.

        • The interesting thing is just WHERE in Siberia it struck. It hit Chelyabinsk. Now while the name may not ring a bell, it is a very important city from the Cold War. There are several cities with that name in the area and the reason why is that one or more of them were closed cities. Closed cities did not appear on any maps and so they got names that combines their postal code with the nearest city. Chelyabinsk 40 was particularly interesting as it is where the 1957 Kyshtym disaster occurred at the Mayak nuclear processing facility. The plant is still in use today to process nuclear fuel. So, it could have been FAR worse had the asteroid hit a different spot.

      14. FTW and Martha are Spot On! NASA is just getting creative— got to keep their paychecks coming in somehow.

      15. Two things:

1- At least 76 NASA Scientists have “died” in the past two years. What did they know that they had to die?

2- Pastor Efrain Rodgriguez has been saying for some time a huge asteroid is approaching which will land just outside Puerto Rico which will cause an East Coast Tsunami 50-miles inward; cause a Mexico City earthquake which will set off the San Andreas Fault; cause power outages, etc. He has expressed frustration that both NASA and the White House ignore him.

        Pray, prep, pray some more!

When is TAN coming to pick me up ?
        I still have my symbol.

      21. Lone Ranger,
Not sure why anyone would scoff at the idea of an asteroid, tidal wave or any other unprecedented event natural or otherwise occurring. We are not even two weeks into the year and look what has gone on. And it’s going to keep on rolling. Just read where US mint gold and silver sales are close to breaking a sales record.

      22. Is this earth really worth saving?

      23. Fact is that a nuclear blast gets 99.99% of its destructive force from the movement of MASS and HEAT. The remainder is radiation. On Earth the MASS comes from the atmosphere. There isnt any atmosphere in space to impact an asteroid.

A blast in space, near an asteroid will only irradiate and heat the surface of the rock. The one ton or so of warhead mass that may strike the asteroid will do little to change its course. Radiation from a few pounds of fission or fusion will also have little effect.

A blast on the surface needs to move mass of the asteroid in the opposite direction of where we want to redirect it. This will not be very effective from a surface blast. To move sufficient mass to cause an orbital change, a warhead would have to be deep inside the rock.

The most effective way to change the orbit of an asteroid is to land several thrusters on the surface. Ion thrusters if years are available, rocket thrusters if only months.

      24. Ok if the planet X Nibiru theory is correct. I will not impact the earth. Supposively It makes a 3600 year egg shaped orbit. The last time was said to be during the EXODIS. It didn’t destroy the planet then? What its claimed it does is Its magnetic poles pull the earths magnetic poles. and effect our magnosphere and plate technonics. Causing things like shifting of the earth,s magnetic poles. Earthquakes, flooding, shifts in the jet stream, weird weather like warm in Alaska and freezing in the lower 48? Naw Nibiru is a myth none of those things are happening? Nibiru is a myth because NASA says so? Now the moon pulls on the planet causing low and high tides. However a planet ten times the size of the moon will not do anything. Because NASA says it don’t exist.

      25. It’s called ‘making sure $$ keep coming into your program by convincing the government your services are required’.
