A former Facebook executive, who openly admits to not using social media, has come out about the role he played in “ripping apart the fabric of society.”  Chamath Palihapitiya has publicly declared that he didn’t really understand “the consequences” of what he was doing.

This isn’t the first time a social media powerhouse has come forward with regret for helping create a social media platform either. Facebook’s first president, Sean Parker, opened up about his regrets over helping create social media as we now know it last month. Parker has said that social media creates “a social-validation feedback loop” by giving people “a little dopamine hit every once in a while because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever.”

Palihapitiya, who worked for Facebook from 2005-2011, expressed his concerns during a recent public discussion at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He told the audience, “I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.”

“So we are in a really bad state of affairs right now, in my opinion. It [social media] is eroding the core foundation of how people behave by and between each other. And I don’t have a good solution. My solution is I just don’t use these tools anymore. I haven’t for years,” said Chamath Palihapitiya, the former vice president of user growth. “I don’t know if I really understood the consequences of what I was saying, because of the unintended consequences of a network when it grows to a billion or 2 billion people and it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other,” Parker said. “God only knows what it’s doing to our children’s brains.”

Palihapitiya, who is a millionaire thanks to his role in Facebook’s growth, also admitted it wasn’t about the Russian ads. We’ve done this damage to ourselves and fueled an addiction of sorts. “The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we’ve created are destroying how society works,” he told the audience said. “No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. And it’s not an American problem—this is not about Russians ads. This is a global problem.” And Palihapitiya admitted to feeling guilty for his role. “I feel tremendous guilt. I think we all knew in the back of our minds—even though we feigned this whole line of, like, there probably aren’t any bad unintended consequences. I think in the back, deep, deep recesses of, we kind of knew something bad could happen. But I think the way we defined it was not like this.”

Palihapitiya said he doesn’t use social media because he “innately didn’t want to get programmed.” As for his kids: “They’re not allowed to use this sh*t.” That seemed to strike a nerve too.  Palihapitiya admitted that social media is “programming” the behaviors of users. “Your behaviors—you don’t realize it but you are being programmed. It was unintentional, but now you gotta decide how much you are willing to give up, how much of your intellectual independence,” he told the students in the crowd. “And don’t think, ‘Oh yeah, not me, I’m fucking genius, I’m at Stanford.’ You’re probably the most likely to f*cking fall for it. ‘Cause you are f*cking check-boxing your whole Goddamn life.”

The consequences of a social media addiction were unknown until recently. Now, it certainly seems almost as harrowing as an alcohol addiction. With one in six Americans now on anti-depressants and desperately seeking attention through social media, could Palihapitiya be onto something? Has social media damaged the social fabric of our society?

      1. Granny and Grandad still use Facebook. But they still read the newspaper too…

      2. Overall, society is already truly Trash, so yes I think this shit just makes things even worse!

        • And now back to your regularly scheduled programming…. ring a bell?

          • That’s right. All this stuff has been slowly planned for decades.

            • I never got on facesh*t and i never use any other “social” websites as i know the gov. tracks everything and reads everything and keeps a record on us all. Our whole life goes straight to Homeland Security. Of course everything we write here does too, but i want them to know what i think about them and how this country is run. But my PERSONAL business is NONE of their business! Like where i go everyday, what i do, what hobbies i have, what friends i have, what i ate today, what happened in my life. NONE of that is any of their business.

      3. I dumped Farcebook YEARS ago… after only being on a month or two and never using it anyway. Who cares what my hotel room looked like on my last vacation in Pisgy Switch Iowa anyway?

        • Ha. I’m giving you a fix right now.

        • Ha. I’m giving you a fix right now!

        • I can honestly say I’ve never had a facebook account, never needed one, never wanted one.

      4. The tech companies that are highly successful are in bed with TPTB, they facilitate their rise and dominance. Apple under Steve Jobs, early in the tech revolution liked to put sand in the gears of government. He unfortunately passed from pancreatic cancer; go figure.

        • They’re creations of the PTB (Rothschild cabal) in order to spy on us and to eventually control every aspect of our lives.

      5. Ummm;
Hitting a little close to home?

        • not at all. Like the article said, he made a shitload of money off of it, knows to stay away from it, keeps his kids off of it. This hits no closer to home for him than it does a vaccine researcher watching an outbreak in some central african republic kill off the population.

      6. I dont get why people put ALL their life out there on facebook for EVERYONE to see, some of these folks put EVERYTHING out there, dont get it, one of my old classmates had some naked pictures on he page, i mean yea, she is still pretty hot bod wise but my gawd ya gotta be braindead to put that out there, i only use it under a screen name and theres nothing on the page, dont even use anything other than the profile for the sole purpose of comment sections on web pages.

      7. “I am become death, destroyer of worlds”

      8. This article depresses me. I’m going to check my social media for an uplift. 😛

        • *like*

      9. One more reason why there will be no revolution. Another? This website, and other popular survival/liberty blogs. Venting your anger in the comments and validation for it. Misdirection.

        • The “revolution” is one of a worldview change. Just like in the empire of the USSR. The battle is one of information dissemination and education. If people would winsomely use their HEADS and imagination – and this includes art, music, literature, etc. – we will win. Why? Because the left’s ideas, to put it crudely, SUCK. They have ZERO explanatory adequacy, they are ALWAYS hypocrites (think the Hollywierd Learjet leftist), and their nostrums have given us morally and financially bankrupt cities, states and countries (Detroit, Illinois, incl. 3 of the last 5 governors if I remember correctly – being jailed), Greece, the EU. etc.

Truth is Keynesianism has failed. Socialism has utterly failed (ever hear of Zimbabwe? Venezuela? Detroit? Illinois? The USSR?) Truth is, socialism is utter hypocrisy (every patriotic American really needs to read Dr. Arthur Brooks book Who Really Cares on the topic).

We educate ourselves, then find creative ways to pass this on, we WILL win, and peacefully. The American Revolution was won a decade before, during the preaching of people like George Whitfield. We need to do the same. And Mac’s site is a perfect example of this. We don’t know which match we strike will light the fire, but – while he is FAR from perfect – the election of Trump is just ONE example of the success of what we are doing.

          • LMAO. You’re gonna edumedicate yourself so smart, that the enemies of freedom and liberty will be in awe of your stupendous smartness, and just give up!

          • “if people winsomely use their heads”

not going to happen, cos they all just want free stuff and to be taken care of. they’ll ignore anything for a bunch of online gaming. at least essau sold his birthright for a bowl of soup.

a nationwide Christ-oriented spiritual revival is our only way out. the four or eight years of Trump presidency is but a respite.

the above said, i would rather you be right, and me be wrong. and it’s not over yet.

stick with Christ so that he’ll stick with you.

            • “win·some
              ˈwinsəm/Submit
              adjective
attractive or appealing in appearance or character.”

He’s just stringing together big words to give the appearance of superior intelligence.

        • I’m glad to have a place to vent. Otherwise I’d probably be sitting in prison or dead already because I killed someone(s} too soon.

          • Like that old saying, If the founders were alive today, they’d be shooting already!” No they wouldn’t, they’d all be on social media getting the dopamine hits.

            • They didn’t shoot until exactly the right time, curt. Makes me wonder why you’re here if not venting yourself. Paid to confuse the issue perhaps? We will kill the motherfuckers when the time is right. Not before.

              • Or unless I become terminally ill….

                • life is a sexually transmitted terminal illnes. you are going to die.

      10. I only use FB to keep up with old friends and relatives. I don’t “friend” people that I’m not acquainted to in real life. I don’t “check in” or tell details of my life.

I put just a little on there just so I’ll appear “normal” to the NSA crowd.

I also market my websites a little bit on there.

I don’t use a cell phone, so I’m not checking FB every few minutes or getting real-time updates like some people I know.

      11. Facebook was called Life Log before it became Facebook. Life Log was a Pentagon program. Almost all TV is social conditioning. Social engineering. People watching TV all their lives are no longer basing opinions on good info. So all their opinions are the ones that TPTB want them to have. Deprogram yourselves and your kids. It is an info war.

      12. Don’t you just like how millionaires “feel guilt” AFTER they are rich and cozy. I bet he lets his little Indian rugrats watch TV and Netflix, etc. Hollywood pours more sewage into the home than FB. Hypocrites are just silly.

      13. “The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. …We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. …In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.”
        ― Edward L. Bernays, Propaganda

      14. If tptb censor free speech on the internet then what good is the internet? Boycott is an option in all regards until that is outlawed, bah the majority of Americans are so asleep, comically if not so pitifully.

      15. The damage has already been done. The negative impact social media was/is having on society should have been addressed before it became an epidemic..The old saying “don’t cry over spilled milk” holds true.If this would have been addressed a decade ago we probably wouldn’t be discussing it now..An argument can easily be made that Social media did not bring families and friends closer, and in reality it separated people even further because most have lost touch on how to communicate IN PERSON..For example, how many family members visited you during Thanksgiving and couldn’t put their precious smartphone away for a day and enjoy each other’s company? You can’t go anywhere today without seeing the majority of people starring into their phone and being totally oblivious to their surroundings.

        • I’ve seen the kids using Snapchat throughout their day, every day, to simply maintain a ‘streak’ of messages with their friends. They snap a selfie and then send it to each friend on their Snapchat list in order to keep a streak going. Very shallow, very stupid, very mind-numbing.

        • They sit at the table and text eachother….

      16. You are right Stormy….
Everyday life is swamped in mind altering crap.
News, fake news, Hollyweird, Las Vegas, large
        cities, radio, television, etc.

Advertisers are the worst. They make claims that are lying,
grossly inaccurate, mind bending, teaching wild and abnormal,
uncontrollable, disrespectable, hateful and socially unacceptable
        behavior to children.
U-tube is another despicable venue most young people should not be
exposed to, because most of them cannot separate reality from brain
        damaging hype and stupidity.

FarceBook is in your face govmnt spying. ( Or anyone else who wants
        to SPY on you.)
G??gle is another Spy tool. Don’t use it. Don’t even allow it on your
computer. Questions…searches….are answered by liberal, communist,
hackers who steer you to liberal sites you don’t want, then saves all
your data to (“shadow govmnt” and “deep state”) Utah data base.

They had CEO’s stirring up trouble during the Arab Spring in Egypt. And
since then trouble world wide. Use it at your own risk..

        • You tube rocks! I can find about any old song I can think of there! Other than that eehhhhh,,,,

        • I never use google. I use startpage.com cuz they don’t track us at all. Check it out.

      17. 1981. Head of the CIA William Casey said, We will know how effective our propaganda is when everything the American people believe s wrong. Your government. It worked. They won. We lost. For now.

        • Make sure you wash your ass good, if you have to kiss it goodbye it could be stinky lol.

      18. Has millions but in hindsight regrets how he got it. Too late.

      19. Nobody knew the consequences. Bullcrap. It was by design. The warning sirens are blaring about the global brain and it isn’t even here yet.

      20. To old, to tired, to I don’t give a shit to be programmed.

      21. Zuckerberg’s ethics leave much to be desired. He deceived and cheated the Winklevoss twins.

FB is a direct backdoor to the NSA and other entities. FB tracks you even after you sign off of it.

Everything online, included this site and its posts, are logged. They have both your I.P. address and your physical address. What a violation. But being an American means standing your ground and not surrendering ANY of your CONSTITUTIONAL/GOD-GIVEN RIGHTS! And THAT’s why this site exists– to give a voice to those who have WOKEN UP!

As for FB, thank you, but I’ll get my dopamine kicks elsewhere, the natural way, not the blue screen way.

Yet somewhere in NSA-land is a software programmer who knows HOW to bring down FB, but hesitates. I really wish (s)he WOULDN’T! haha

Amen, Mr. C.! To which I will only add, “and we will fight them online!”

So if you want to track my ass, go ahead! But don’t complain when I STRIKE YOU DOWN, like Rocky Marciano or Jake LaMotta, for VIOLATING ME!!!

Is that a threat? HELL NO! That’s simply a RESPONSE stating how I will DEFEND myself when my RIGHTS become VIOLATED by YOUR EGREGIOUS DIGITAL AGGRESSION!

They really hate us folks here that are awake and who will NEVER EVER go back to SLEEP!

        But that’s THEIR problem.

This must be achieved with caution, of course.” “Those who have fostered evil will receive their retribution. The plots of those intent on promoting evil will be brought to light. 22. I see social media has hardened folks . It has and is helping in the balkanizing of America . Multiculturalism is a sick experiment that has failed . Social media allows facts to be shared and discussed . They realize they have screwed up . This turd ain’t telling the whole truth. Read the Balk by Billy Roper

      23. I have never has a facebook or twitter account nor do I own a smartphone, I think phones should be used for calls not as a social outlet. My son has never had these because he is convinced they are spy/surveillance devices. He is in college and the teachers there are constantly complaining that they can never get students to talk or engage in constructive debate and/or dialogue because they won’t look up from their phones. I clearly remember the eighties and nineties, there was a better social structure than now and I think that social media is partly to blame.

      24. AFTER YEARS OF “CHEETACHAT” WINDOWS 98 I SAID TO MYSELF F..K THIS,…. AND NEVER WENT BACK TO ANY SOCIAL SITE. HOWEVER, DROPPING COMMENTS OR REPLYING TO THEM ON WEB PAGES ARE LIKE STEPPING ON THE THRESHOLD.
I GUESS BY NATURE PEOPLE JUST WANT TO BE HEARD.

      25. The smartest thing Silly Valley ever did was to hire Indians to work on the build-out of social media. Indians would sell their granny for US dollars if they could. You have to remember they come from one of the most corrupt societies on the planet where everyone is held in place by a caste system and where they so don’t care what happens to others they actually let the majority of the population crap in the streets. And, surprise, surprise, this is exactly what is happening now in the US.

Social media is an electronic caste system. People are frozen in place and then diddled with (far worse than Harvey Weinsten’s diddling) by the social media companies working on behalf of the NSA. They will bankrupt people they think shouldn’t have money (white families, white men) and promote others that fit their agenda (trans etc.).

      26. ‘You Don’t Realize It, But You Are Being Programmed’

Unless you are one of the forward thinkers who never used it. Or MySpace. Or Twitter. Or whatever other (anti) social media platforms exist. Paranoia will most certainly not destroy ya. But attention whoring will.
