The only thing I can see that this may be is a temporary destabilization exercise in order to tie up European governments so that Russia can, when the moment is right, move in and grab back parts of Europe it wants (the Baltics, Nordics, Germany). I think many Europeans would cheer them on too, rather having white Russians running the show than being in some Islamic hell-hole.
