The latest informational video from Bankrupting America quantifies just how bad our debt situation is. As of 2011, our gross national debt is $14 trillion dollars, and by 2020, that number is set to balloon to $25 trillion. And, that’s not even counting all of the entitlement commitments over the next 25 or so years, which some have estimated to exceed $200 trillion.

It’s about to get much worse. With debt comes interest – an added fee for borrowing that money.
This year we’ll pay $200 billion in interest on the debt. In just three short years we’ll pay double ($400 billion a year by 2014). In nine, quadruple ($800 billion a year by 2020). And by the time singing sensation Justin Bieber is old enough to rent a car we’ll pay almost $1 trillion on interest payments a year.
One trillion is equal to spending a dollar every second for 32,000 years, except Washington is spending it all in one.
Currently, we take in around $2.5 trillion in tax revenue. By 2020, tax revenues are projected to be roughly $4.6 trillion. According to a recent overview from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), “CBO projects that the government’s annual spending on net interest will more than triple between 2010 and 2020 in nominal terms.”
If the government were an individual, it would have declared bankruptcy or been imprisoned for fraud a long time ago.
At some point, the government is not going to have enough tax revenue to cover our yearly spending outlays and interest payments. Strike that last statement – we’ve already reached that point.
We are literally, right now, having to borrow money just to pay off previously borrowed money because we spend too much and simply don’t generate enough from taxes.
The word that comes to mind is: unsustainable.
Our view is that our creditors will stop lending to the world’s largest dead beat debtor well before 2020.

The fact that you paid into it all your life makes no difference….the same as any other tax you paid. An entitlement simply means you get it whether you paid taxes or not……which clearly many do….and you may receive far in excess of you may have paid in, so it is NOT a pension, per se.

Take Ida Mae Fuller, for example. The very first social security payee. She paid in about 25 bucks in taxes, and collected about 25,000 over the course of her retirement life. No true insurance or pension plan could match that, so the money was OPM….other people’s money…..an entitlement…..which is a fancy name for welfare. The average social security retiree gets all the money they paid into the system within a couple years…..throw in a couple for IF it had truly been invested, and after that, it’s OPM.

Instead of cutting back the social net underneath the sick and aged who also paid their dues in this country, why not eliminate the Illegals that cost the American taxpayer more than $300 billion EVERY YEAR?
Why not cut the military budget by 25 or 30% by eliminating ALL cost over runs? If a company cannot accurately contain its costs, let them eat the over runs. They will get efficient in a hurry. Real private enterprise does why not the MIC?
Why not cut government employees paychecks back to only a 20% premium over the private sector job of similar worth, instead of the 60% premium they get now?
Why not eliminate the department of education, ObamaCare, etc, etc, ?
Why not make Congress accept the same health care plan and retirement program that they impose upon the American people?
I suppose there are many other ways for America to save money, cut its cost of doing business, and become more “profitable”. FAIR TRADE rather than FREE TRADE would make a very very BIG difference.

If our currency is worth nothing, what would China want with it? That would also mean that we would no longer be buying/importing China product because we have nothing to pay for it. My understanding is that only the ultra-rich of China have been buying property in the US. And this is pure speculation on my part, but possibly the only way the US becomes a servant to foreign entities is through assimilation.
We retirees paid in to SS and earned it but now have to pay taxes on it, which we didn’t used to.  Taxing SS checks started with Clinton and  many see it as unfair.  It may be fair to some to get only what you pay into it back and that’s it.  Some live into their 90’s and get way way more than they ever paid in..I believe in the free market; SS and medicare should have never started !  Blame it on the WW2 generation that allowed it to pass.  Younger generations will never get it all back since they keep raising the age and lowering the amount taken early and keep raising medicare B premiums.

TnAndy, i see your point, but your not looking at it from both sides. My grandfather paid in vast sums to SS during his working years. Now, that he’s retired, he barely gets enough to survive! For a while he was in a nursing home….$5500 a month. His SS checks were around $1500 a month. He had saved a lot of money in the bank. Before we could get him outta there, those crooks nearly bankrupted him. Now, he’s trying to get by on the sad little check he’s getting. So, sure, cut Social Security. Just because the gubmint made a promise to these people (and to us) to provide for them (and US) when they got old. Doesn’t matter really, does it?
S.S. is a one lane walking bridge going to the promised land with a big V to get to bridge. It’s backing up so fast now we’re going to have to hire more gov workers just to pass out applications to prove that you are alive. The politicians don’t stand in line, they are in the sky lounge sipping cocktails. You will know what’s in the law when we pass it. The checks will keep flowing but one day it won’t be worth trying to buy anything with the digits. But hope & change will come at a hard price for many. We are lucky to see this far ahead of the crowd.

You could cut the military’s budget by HALF and still only save 400 Billion (the total defense budget is $881 billion). We need to cut at least $1.2 TRILLION. Cutting the defense budget needs to be done too, and stop the wars! But operations in Iraq and Afghanistan are only an extra $118 billion.Â

Most believe that they pay “taxes” with FRNs. A lawful tax can not be paid with FRNs or other representations of debt.
