Surveillance Expansion Across America and the World

The implications for privacy under a big brother police state are obvious.

Researchers at MIT have come up with a way to use WiFi signals to see behind walls, and map a room in 3-D. By reflecting the signal, it can also locate the movements of people or objects in the room. The Daily Mail reports:

Using a wireless transmitter fitted behind a wall, computer scientists have developed a device that can map a nearby room in 3D while scanning for human bodies.

Using the signals that bounce and reflect off these people, the device creates an accurate silhouette and can even use this silhouette to identify who that person is.

The device is called RF Capture and it was developed by researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL).

The RF Capture device transmits wireless signals that travel through a wall and reflect off a person’s body back to the device.

    […]

Since only a small number of body parts reflect the signal back at any given point in time, the device monitors how these reflections vary as someone moves and walks.

Not even your four walls and a roof are to be private if this technology is used for surveillance purposes. And make no mistake, it will be. There are clearly privacy implications to this, but chances are that objections will be kept to a dull roar, with so many other tracking and surveillance activities descending upon society. There are many other related and overlapping technologies, like the radar sweep devices some police are now using to look through walls and locate suspects before going inside. However, the use of WiFi to achieve this make it even easier.

As SHTF previously reported, a new application of WiFi known as Wi-Vi could take surveillance to the next level:

MIT tech geeks have found a way to pinpoint location and track complex movement patterns with far greater accuracy – and what’s more, it can track people’s steps through walls, and the individuals or groups don’t even need to carry a cell phone! MIT professor Dina Katabi and graduate student Fadel Adib:

“Show that Wi-Fi can also extend our senses, enabling us to see moving objects through walls and behind closed doors. In particular, we can use such signals to identify the number of people in a closed room and their relative locations. We can also identify simple gestures made behind a wall, and combine a sequence of gestures to communicate messages to a wireless receiver without carrying any transmitting device. […] It shows how one can track a human by treating the motion of a human body as an antenna array and tracking the resulting RF beam.

The system is interested furthering its control, and fishing for pretexts to cite infractions, collect revenue and play nanny over the lives of the population.

Judging from the comments, many people are at least aware of this. Here are just a few:

BadSull: “The government already has it.”

Greg: “Drones, smart tvs watching you, laptops listening to you, traffic lights tracking your last 10,000 locations and now we look through walls. Gonna have to spend a lot more resources on mental health in the future.”

James Rustles: “So, how do you defeat it to maintain your privacy? That’s the question that needs to be asked.”

JaneDoeRKBA: “Mylar faced foam house insulation , Mylar lined draperies, Mylar under a metal roof….all should work in largely defeating this technology.”

Jeffrey S.Gee: “Using a faraday cage!”

James OD: “For a multitude of reasons, it’s starting to seem like a good idea to add a layer of aluminum foil under the drywall when building a house. What’s the world coming to when the disheveled guy living out of the shopping cart under a bridge starts to make sense?”

Technology is changing the tone of reference to tin foil from one of ridicule to one of acknowledgement that these forms of spying are real science, and applicable to the methods used by various agencies and organizations who are investigating, instigating or intimidating.

Many are taking notice of the extreme intrusion the technology represents.

Hanni Fakhoury, an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation said “Your location is something that’s worthy of privacy. We know that, even within your house, where you go can reveal a lot about yourself.”

Is there anywhere left just to be left alone?

      1. Makes one wonder what else WiFi signals can do that we have not discovered yet???

        • Wow, slow night…

A man received the following text from his neighbour:

I am so sorry Bob. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been tapping your wife, day and night when you’re not around.
In fact, more than you. I’m not getting any at home, but that’s no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won’t happen again.

The man, anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun, and without a word, shot his wife and killed her.

A few moments later, a second text came in:

Damn autocorrect. I meant “wifi”, not “wife”.

          Be well all…

          • Listen to what I have gotten addicted to…

              • I am trying to relate to my daughters, so don’t judge just because I like Awful Waffle breakfasts…

                Be well all…

                • A man was walking his dog through the graveyard when he saw another man crouching behind a gravestone.

                  “Morning!” he said.

The other man replies, “No, just having a shit.”

I doubt anyone will get this one?????

                  • My girlfriend asked me if I had ever pissed in the shower.

I said, “Yeah, a couple of times, accidentally.”

She said, “That’s disgusting! What do you mean accidentally?!”

“Hey,” I said, “these things happen when you’re having a shit.”

Just seemed to be a shitty joke…

                    • Freaking slow night…

One day two boys were walking through the woods when they saw some rabbit shit. One of the boys said: “What is that?”

“‘They’re smart pills,” said the other boy “Eat them and they’ll make you smarter.”

So he ate them and said: “These taste like shit.”

“See,” said the other boy, “you’re already getting smarter.”

                    • Bad joke..

Pete and Mary were walking home from the pub when Mary says: “I need a piss” an goes behind a bush and drops her knickers.

Feeling horny, Pete puts his hand through the bush and feels something dangling between Mary’s legs. He says “have you changed sex?”

Mary says “no, I have changed my mind, I am having a shit!”

                    • Last one…

Little Johnny replies: “Teacher, do farts have lumps in them?”

The Teacher says: “Of course not Johnny.”

To which Johnny replies: “Then I have definitely shit my pants.”

                    • “Not even your four walls and a roof are to be private if this technology is used for surveillance purposes. And make no mistake, it will be.”

Fortunately, American ingenuity strikes again. There is now a WALLPAPER that has been developed that will shield your house/room and make it a faraday cage.

                      Sweet !!! 🙂

                    • Geez, people have you grown hard on jokes???

                    • Uh, Eppe, you seem to be stuck on shitty jokes, Nyuk nyuk, nyuk… 🙂

                  • dude, I had to read that three times before I got it. Now I have to change my underwear. In these serious times I needed a good laugh

        • And remember, it’s just to keep you safe from those evil doing terrorists. Because as George W Bush once said: “they hate us for our freedoms”.

I know, you sometimes can’t make this shit up.

        • off topic:

Venevuela demonstrates the awesome power of socialism. How else could a country near the equator, with a year-round growing season have food shortages?

      2. I guess this will put curtains out of business.

      3. Probably why they stopped lead paint years ago.

My old farmhouse has 150 years of lead paint layers and even the glass is leaded.

        • JD Mchine,
you know there MAY be more to that story about the lead paint, they have had allot of tech. for a longer time than people know and you could have some good thinking there! funny how they ONLY care about us, at unusual times. IE, flouride water etc etc.

          • Blah blah blah….stupid article, didn’t even read it, but by the headline I assumed it was somewhat about the fact that 1984 IS HERE… as if “we” don’t already know that…every time we look around and see 4yr olds talking on an ipad with big brother and momma watching over. TECH WILL AND HAS DESTROYED US, humanity and “freedom” is dead and gone………………

Where do we go from here? What will YOU do next?

FUCK IT I’m pissed and over it to the point of ….

            Well…

      4. wouldn’t aluminum foil block that?

      5. When they start gun confiscation guess what they are going to use to check out your home?…

      6. The ‘tech bros’ strike again.

      7. Old news.

Lead paint is good pt. Just like they removed shielding from cars so they would be vulnerable to EMP.

      8. Like all tech this to can be beaten, lets all do a bit of research and post findings. The tinfoil works great on cell phone,a easy beat,we as a people need to keep at it.

        • Less EMF Inc. has shielding paints, films, fabrics and etc.
Not cheap but will do the trick.

They also put out a print catalouge with boocoo meters, books, vids-

        • I keep telling my wife I’m not really crazy. See, tin foil is good for something beside baking.

      9. “Even Within Your House, Where You Go Can Reveal a Lot”

I don’t know about everyone else, but where I go is the toilet.

Maybe the tinfoil hat wearers were on to something.

I guess if you line the inside of your house, they’ll bring in the x-ray truck.

I wonder how much lead foil costs.

Perhaps, if you don’t use wifi yourself, you can get a wireless router and amplify the signal enough to swamp their detectors.

        I need some technical specs.

      10. They can’t use your wifi if you have no network or phone I call bulshit on this maybe in the future but not now. We need smart people like the ones at mit to make counter measures to this problem is tptb has fat pockets to pay we do not. Once again the rich fucked the little guy. .

      11. I once worked in a building that was built with steel studs, rather than wood studs. It was nearly impossible to get cell phone reception in that building, except by the windows.

      12. Boy are they going to get sick looking though my walls. Severs them right!!!!
        Sgt.

        • Old man,

          Was that a joke?

a hahahahahhaha you sick old bastard

      13. One way to get people to stop doing something is to overwhelm them. They leak information such as this, or the spy network on Facebook. After a while people just give up and stop practicing personal privacy.

It amazes me when I hear some poor person telling me all their personal business. Sometimes I tell people something that is patently rediculous. If it gets out, I know who told on me. I get a good laugh out of it. And I’ve learned that it doesn’t help you to let anyone know too much about you. Besides, It makes you more interesting. My father rarely talked about himself or his family. When he did, we all were that much more eager to find out this or that. Before he died he told me lots of stories. All very interesting.

      14. I never post anything I wouldn’t want my mother to know.
I never violate any Federal, state, or local laws.
        Do you believe me?

      15. I can’t use the john when people are watching…..kinda shy.

      16. Folks, all your concepts of some form of shielding are ridiculous. The idea of WiFi mapping (see: http://www.kurzweilai.net/wi-fi-signal-used-to-track-moving-humans-even-behind-walls ) basically is a form of radar. What it in essence does is from a base point of reference – being a null (no movement) take a broad swath reading of reflectivity of the WiFi transmissions that ‘fill’ the room under scrutiny. Think of it sort of like filling a room with smoke that does not move about. When motion is senses, like in the smokey room, patterns are created that upset the base null reference point. From moment to moment, using the last recorded/sensed state of the ‘smoke’ as a new reference point, the object or person is noted as to the newest position. Again, consider the ‘smoke’ idea. You can visualize what would be being picked up in a fashion.

As for shielding? No. None is possible. Only possible factors that can be influenced would be to have multiple transmitters not a part of the original WiFi transmissions being broadcast with much more strength to act as an overwhelming overall radiating condition. Like the ‘smoke’ idea – one way to obscure the motion through the smoke would be to pump in vast quantities of new smoke constantly. Jamming of the WiFi signal would work; however, then the occupants of the dwelling would have no ability to they themselves use the WiFi for connective purposes.

In short, what you’re dealing with is something unlike any other form of surveillance currently being used.

      17. I have read that your cell phone gives out radiation that causes cancer. When certain aircraft fly overhead while I am on my cellphone, I have noticed the phone gets lighter and I get a headache. Certainly it is probably something interacting between the aircraft and the phone but is coincidental. Regardless, I set the phone down when I hear an approaching aircraft.

      18. Now the ladies gotta worry about pervs looking at them in the shower and stuff ha ha ha. But seriously rf technology is not that good yet. If they can do all this stuff then why can’t they find the enemy Isis savages and deal them a heavy blow mmmm cause they can’t. But I don’t deny that they are trying to learn about our lives like what kinds of products we like this is to create more fear there is no shortage of that going around. If they wanna watch me rock out with my cock out fine by me but I would think they have better shit to do.

        • ha haaah.

          Oi Asshat.
The more you rub the bigger it gets!

Hope you ‘n’ yours are well.
          Keep it stiff fella.

        • For $30,000, I will loan $5.

        • Thanks Satori. Priceless. LOL.

      19. So plus one to tinfoil… Seems that is a pretty good thing to own in quantity.

      20. I have access to top secret reports on this technology. They state it is unable to see anybody who is Muslim (something to do with their DNA) but it can detect young women in the shower or having sex. The NSA is consequently redeploying its surveillance resources towards university campuses.

      21. all you have to do is transmit on the same fq and you can block wifi, i have a leapfog wireless transmitter so i can send cable signals to a tv that i cant run a cable to. and when you turn it on it completely shuts down wifi even when my tablet is almost touching the wifi router

        • Mr. Paulson, I’m not trying to argue with you; but, the system in question uses its own WiFi frequency. Furthermore, that same frequency can be altered ‘on the fly’ for best environmental utility. Think more of a standard transceiver – transmit and receive, both tunable at will. The WiFi of this particular system is NOT the same as your standard 2412-2462Mhz range or the 2400-2483.5 range. Most probably a specially licensed bandwidth; i.e., 3657.5-3296.5Mhz or 4940-4990Mhz. If in the 5250-5275 range – also very likely – forget an easy blocking scheme. Last – the military and other agencies operate on their own frequency spectrums.

In other words, WiFi isn’t just one simple thing/bandwidth. And if you don’t selectively block via some jamming mechanism you’re doing nothing. Last – if you do successfully employ a full spectrum (think say a ‘spark-gap’) jammer, you might as well fly the “I’m up to no good flag” high.

      22. this is just one state.. understand that these facilities will not be for everyone, just those of us that arnt going to play along ….
knowing your possible destination may have an effect on your want or need to prepare
if they need to open ore space up.. thats what the ammo is for

this shit coming up next year where they place the robot/ puppet/ whatever you want to call it,. is as serious as all our asses being made grass

Below is a list of facilities which will be used to hold Michigan residents when the civil uprising starts. If you are anti government or an American insurgent, you will be housed pending your trial for crimes against the state. The state meaning the federal government.

Many of the facilities will be familiar to Michigan residents. The others probably not and may be worth checking into.

Federal Emergency Management has purchased 12 million rounds of various caliber ammunition to be used against the citizens of the US and has to be interpreted as such. Why would agencies such as DNR and HHS been granted permission to send out bid requests for hundreds of thousands of rounds of multiple caliber ammunition?

Very interesting to say the least.

        • Michigan:
o Kincheloe Correctional Facility (Formerly Kincheloe AFB with B-52 sized runways). Has five large prison buildings able to house 5000+. The facility has about 500 prisoners at this time. Location: 20 miles south of Sault Ste. Marie (Soo Locks) at the eastern end of the Upper Penninsula of Michigan.
o K.I. Sawyer AFB Large construction program has been going on under the name of “Operation Gateway”. High security is in place with a large portion of the base closed to civilian view. Location: 20 miles south of Marquette, MI in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan.
o Raco Field Raco field is an interesting facility. The above ground runways form a perfect triangle. Few buildings appear on the surface, but ventilators can be seen. Civilian workers report that a subsurface facility exists. No publicity exists indicating what the role of Raco Field is, although something is there. To observers, it is an “inactive WWII base.” Location: 15 miles NW of Kincheloe Correctional Facility on Hwy 28.
o Bark River A large construction operation is ongoing in the Bark River, MI, area. Locals are tight-lipped. The facility is off the main highway in a wilderness area. While most of the locals say that the construction is associated with the ELF (extreme low frequency) project of world-wide communications, others suspect FEMA is involved. (Note: the ELF grid is located 100 miles NE of the Bark River area) Location: 20 miles west of Escanaba in the upper penninsula of Michigan.
o Bay City Sits on Saginaw Bay which connects to Lake Huron. This facility has high fencing, barbed wire and guard towers.
o Grayling Camp Grayling Michigan National Guard Base. Detention facility. Guards towers, razor wire.
o Southwest area of the state FEMA Detention facility
o Central part of the state FEMA Detention facility
        o Detroit FEMA Detention facility

and some that I’m sure we dont even know about yet..

        have a good morning

      23. All this new tech got you worried? Flying droids, mobile self determining weapon systems and of course electronic ease dropping. Was watching some type of machine/robot that carries gear for the military. Damn thing can run like a dog. Rather have the dog chase me if I had a choice.
But it is all relative. Having to face down a tank or being shot at by a chain gun from a helo. Just another weapon system to deploy against us.

      25. The former Loudoun County sheriff’s deputy charged with stealing more than $200,000 from the office’s asset forfeiture program has a novel reason that federal prosecutors might not be able to put him on trial.

He can’t remember anything that happened over the last 14 years.

In recent court filings, lawyers for 44-year-old Frank Pearson asked a federal judge to order a psychiatric evaluation of their client and hold a hearing to determine whether he is competent to understand the legal proceedings in his case.

But, he’s still a cop…..you picking up what im sayin?

      26. Ron Paul on Fox Business. (Video of interview)

How do your defenses stack up to the dangers in the future. Depends upon if you are up against a patrol or a division.

We know the Why. Not sure about the How To.

      29. I suspect that anyone who manages to install an effective block against this sort of spying will immediately zoom to the top of the Suspect List once the block is detected. The authorities may well pass a law making it illegal to block surveillance…. if not, they will make signal blocking into legal grounds for a warrant so they can enter your home to investigate. There is vast power (and profit) up for grabs with every erosion of privacy and the politicians (and their corporate puppet-masters) seem to be able to pass virtually any legislation they want to continue these intrusions with no real opposition. I cannot imagine how terrible life in this country will be in another ten or fifteen years. The people who were terrified of communism back in the 1950s would be speechless at the totalitarianism that has been passionately embraced by authorities at all levels, and shrugged off by apathetic citizens as long as they can play ‘Angry Birds’ and order pizza with their phones. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi

      30. Big whoop.

Some people think if you draw the blinds, you have privacy; you don’t have any privacy unless you don’t use the internet, your car is before 2008, you use a flip phone and only use cash.

They don’t need any wifi on me, I keep the blinds wide open. Anyone can see right into my living room and kitchen all day and all night for anything they desire.
(And I can see right out on who’s coming and what they’re coming in with, so I know what to counter with.)
