    Most people inside and outside of the US believe that this country’s gun ownership rate is unique, but that’s not exactly true. Though America has the most privately owned guns per capita, there are other countries that aren’t too far behind us, such as Serbia, Yemen, Cyprus, and many Western nations like Finland and Switzerland. In most cases, these countries don’t have access to the same kind of firearms that we do, but nonetheless there are a ton of guns floating around in these places.

    What really separates the US from every other country in the world, is that we have the right to bear arms preserved in our constitution. Technically, Honduras and Mexico have the same right in their constitutions, but in both cases it comes with a lot of restrictions. Their right to bear arms doesn’t have any teeth. The Swiss are known for letting many of their citizens own guns, but gun ownership for most Swiss citizens is more of a duty than a right.

    America stands alone in this regard. We’re the only country with a constitution that gives civilians a clear and explicit right to own and carry firearms. In every other nation, civilians don’t own firearms unless their governments let them.

    That however, is about to change. While most EU governments are eyeing more restrictive gun laws, the Czech Republic is about to add the right to bear arms to its constitution.

    Czech Lawmakers have passed legislation in the lower parliament that would see the right to bear firearms enshrined in the country’s constitution in a move directed against tighter regulations from the European Union.

    The legislation was passed with 139 deputies agreeing to the amendment to the constitution with only nine deputies voting against. The amendment will now be considered by the Czech Senate where it will require a supermajority of three-fifths of the members in order to pass into law, Die Presse reports.

    Similar to the U.S. second amendment to the Constitution, which gives Americans the right to keep and bear arms, the Czech legislation reads: “Citizens of the Czech Republic have the right to acquire, retain and bear arms and ammunition.”

    The amendment also notes that the right is there to ensure the safety of the country, similar to the provision of a “well-regulated militia” in the American amendment.

    After the bill passes through the senate, it’s expected to be signed into law by President Milos Zeman, who changed his mind on privately owned guns last year. “Earlier I spoke often about limiting the ability to have large quantities of weapons. But after the terrorist attacks, I have changed the idea.”

    Though the Czech Republic has always had loose gun laws compared to its neighbors, this law represents a major shift in the European public’s stance on firearm ownership. If anything, it could be just the tip of the iceberg. All across the continent, as migrants grow more violent and as terror attacks become more frequent, we’re seeing Europeans buy more firearms. In some cases, firearm sales have spiked by 350%.

    If there’s any silver lining to the massive influx of migrants into Europe over the past few years, it’s that it has taught ordinary Europeans how important it is to let civilians own firearms.

            We’ve all seen this meme around the interwebs, right?

            “Legal gun owners have over 200 million guns… and 12 trillion rounds of ammo. Seriously, people… if we were a problem, you’d know it!”

            I’ve also seen one that claims we have over 400 million guns and 24 trillion rounds of ammunition. The fact is, while there is no definitive way to tally all the firearms in the United States, it is commonly accepted and reported that there are roughly 300 million firearms in the hands of law-abiding Americans.

            But has anyone else noticed that number hasn’t moved in years, even in the 8 years Obama sparked an increase in gun sales, the gun run during Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, and after the NICS background checks system set new records for 15 straight months?

            So what if that “300 million” estimate is wrong?

            According to Weapons Man, it is:

            We believe that the correct number is much higher — somewhere between 412 and 660 million. You may wonder how we came to that number, so buckle up (and cringe, if you’re a math-phobe, although it never gets too theoretical): unlike most of the academics and reporters we linked above, we’re going to use publicly available data, and show our work.

            What if we told you that one ATF computer system logged, by serial number, 252,000,000 unique firearms, and represented only those firearms manufactured, imported or sold by a relatively small number of the nation’s tens of thousands of Federal Firearms Licensees?

            After explaining the logic behind their equation and showing his work, I’m convinced we have more than 600 million guns in America, more than double what is reported by the media.

            • Crack,you have no link to weaponsman,that site is unfortunately in hiatus at the moment as the author,Kevin”Hognose”Obrien died.I went to his memorial and was a great turnout of family/friends/3 generations of special forces folks including a honor gaurd from the 5th special forces/readers,contributors to his site,a great memorial.His works are archived and a visit to the site will bring up all the articles over the years,including a lot of good weapons tech articles,suggest readoers when time permits give it a look if you have not in the past.

                I too want to welcome the Czechs to our exclusive club! Start arming the people instead of the governments. When the government wants to confiscate and limit gun ownership, it is time to change the government! Really, it is that simple!

              1000 people with 1000 rnds each has 1 million rounds as a group.

              If 24 Trillion rounds existed in the US (preferably private hands) then that equates to (get this) 3000 rounds roughly per man, woman and child on planet earth…. or if 12 trillion is the case, then that equates to 1500 rounds per human.

A well regulated Militia; Stop here for a moment-if one could venture back in time and capture the mindset of those great men in those fearful days, one would realize that a particular fear is spoken and understood here by those living then. A well regulated Militia was a Standing Army and the Founders were justifiably terrified of it at the same time knowing of its necessity. In case of invasion, the unregulated Militia, consisting of farmers, merchants, etc., could be called upon to help but the Standing Army would always be a fearsome institution. And so, because it was a necessary evil, the People would never be denied their right and their duty to defend against it should things go wrong. That was an unlikely scenario in a Constitutional Republic but the Founders knew that in the future the country could devolve into an idiotic Democracy. That’s another story.

Kevin2, I once knew someone from Poland who survived both the German and Russian occupations. he was very clear to me that the Russians were the worst of the two. Everyone in Poland knew that the Soviets were responsible for the Katyn Forest massacre of Polish military and civilians but the official ‘party line’ was that the Nazis were responsible. For decades it was illegal in Poland to publicly blame the Soviets for the massacre. Shortly after WW2, some Polish civilians were kidnapped and taken to the gulags. There was never anything noble about the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe.

      21. I realize that the vast majority of the public is averse to the historical and lawful fact that the 2nd amendment does read “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State”, but none-the-less it does have those words in it.
        Militia, in this nation, is not only a right, but also a duty. State militia statutes were not made void upon the signing of the Constitution. They were, in effect, made mandatory by the fact that the states needed to comply with Article 1, Section 8, Clause 15.
        The avoidance of the fact that militia was not voluntary is due to, what most should recognize as an aversion to making any commitment to some form of sacrifice. Militia requires that you own a firearm comparable to that of regular army, and that you train at least 4 times a year.
        Its not that the historical record doesn’t show this, but rather that people become ambivalent, and in some cases want to make sure that the state can lay a boot upon our necks.

      22. One more thing that I forgot to add. The first law of this nation is the Declaration of Independence. From that document comes our RIGHT to keep and bear arms.
        “WE hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it…”
        In this nation we believe that our rights come from a Creator. No man can interfere with those rights. The Bill of Rights simply enumerated some critical that some believed to be crucial to block the State.
