Military observers have suggested that the buildup of Russian troops on Ukraine’s eastern border is so large that it is either the most expensive military exercise in world history or Vladimir Putin is positioning his army for a massive invasion of the former Soviet state. On Monday the Israeli-based Debka File news agency reported that sources inside the U.S. Department of Defense strongly believe both countries are mobilizing military assets in anticipation of a first battle over the rebel-held flashpoint town of Slavyansk.
“The outcome will determine who controls the Donetsk region and possibly all of East Ukraine – the separatists or the provisional government in Kiev,” reports Debka. Given that Russia has one of the largest and well armed militaries in the world, the prospects of war don’t bode well for Ukraine. “With a superior, professional and well-trained force armed with a preponderance of fire power, the Kremlin has several options to choose from for this engagement,” none of which work in Ukraine’s favor.
While Washington is seemingly ignoring the possibility of an all out confrontation, time may be running short. Secretary of State John Kerry confirmed this morning that U.S. intelligence agencies intercepted numerous communications between Moscow and pro-Russian separatist leaders who may be responsible for numerous shootings at military installations and government buildings over the last two weeks.
“Intel is producing taped conversations of intelligence operatives taking their orders from Moscow and everybody can tell the difference in the accents, in the idioms, in the language. We know exactly who’s giving those orders, we know where they are coming from,” Kerry said at a private meeting of the Tri Lateral Commission in Washington on Tuesday.
But the one indicator that Russia is not simply putting troops on the border for show is a report from St. Petersburg’s Rustlegraph news agency, which claims that the Russian Ministry of Defense has ordered medical brigades to be quickly assembled for deployment to the border.
According to the report, the brigades are now standing by at the Russian Military Medical Academy in Kirov, approximately 600 miles or about a 12 hour drive from the Ukrainian border.

The U.S. has lived as a bully for too long, especially against the citizens. Notice how quickly the government backed down when thousands of militia arrived to make sure that the government didn’t create another Ruby Ridge. Will the bully U.S. back down to Russia or with the U.S. be completely buried in 30 minutes and the end of civilization?
This whole debacle in the Ukraine is absolutely NATO and the U.S. fault. Russia for 22 years left Ukraine in peace. Left Georgia in peace for 16 years. Russia has a big advantage with the night vision and less Russians would be killed. The Russian media machine has been laying the groundwork for this in the last couple weeks, justifying such a move with accusations of illegitimacy of the newly elected government and claims that Russian-supported troops are being attacked by Ukrainians.
Add the fact that the U.S. is looking for Putin’s personnel wealth stash outside of Russia, and consider what Putin will do if they cross this line…
This could get really bad, really quick… at least for the Ukrainians… I am not convinced that Barrack Obama will do anything insofar as a military response is concerned… And I think Putin knows this so he is pushing the envelope.
Realistically, I think we all know that nukes will be flying if we respond to any Russian incursion with U.S. (or NATO / EU) military assets. I don’t see any other outcome if Obama goes head-to-head with Putin.

1). The Ukrainian coup was paramount to an foreigner orchestrating a demolition’s breach to Russia’s front door with Ukraine, Iran, China, and North Korea being Russia’s primary remaining defenseive zones or otherwise buffer zones.
I don’t see calmer heads prevailing here for a number of reasons.
2). My thoughts are the Ukrainian coup was a signal for Putin to launch military and economic warfare.
-China will certainly halt Saudi oil imports if it remains using US Dollars, which will cascade OPEC.
-Russian invasion will be used to politically unify Europe and motivate for a United Europe.
-I don’t see the US entering it directly until after the 2014 elections. I have a real shaking feeling that the results will lead to a declaration of war against Russia and its allies.
My money is that this among other issues will seal the US into an open 1 Party system. Remember, as things become normalized, they tend to become codified and official.
-Economic Collapse leading to martial law and declaration of war.
Ukraine was left vulnerable, so Putin could use it… In Diplomacy, this is like Russo-Turkish convincing Italy to aid them in conquering the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and 8 times out of 10 leads to Italy getting steamrolled by a Russo-Turkish alliance. @ Mac. Really the focal points are the Baltic States and Poland. You have Kaliningrad heavily armed on the northern Poland border. You have Estonia and Latvia right on the Russian border beginning to receive NATO troops and soon military hardware that was promised never to happen. Lithuania is right between Poland and Kaliningrad. Russia warned years ago that IF those Baltic States were any threat to Russia that it would take only a couple of minutes to set all those countries into a sea of fire and be the first ones to be hit. They meant NON NUCLEAR.
I would also watch the Romainia/Bulgarian border region. Moldova is another area that Russia has need for to buffer themselves from NATO. IF the U.S. is stupid enough to try to surround the Russia navy in the Black Sea it will lose their entire fleet. The U.S. just cannot even hope to fight a war in Russia’s backyard and hope to even break even.
I think one of the biggest news stories right now is the new deployment of the U.S. in the Philippines. China has already said that the U.S. is trying to encircle them like Russia. @ Anonymous. I have been looking at maps since I was about 4 years old as Geography has been one of my favorite subjects. I have been waiting for this to happen with Russia ever since NATO broke their word to not expand eastward, it was almost as obvious as some of these earthquakes that were forecasted completely accurately. Like Holly Deyo use to do, I scan as many of the alternative and foreign news sites as possible for something NOT seen in the filtered MSM. In school I took as many classes as possible that were way off the mainstream and as unorthodox as possible. Unlike many students I actually wanted to learn. The worst part was getting a monotone teach out of the textbook type professor.
I suggest this to anyone to get a really good world atlas and a globe and study the topography and the borders of countries to see what is at stake. Many people don’t realize that Ukraine is the largest European ONLY country. Russia is in europe and Asia also. I get a lot of basic information from The World Almanac book of facts. For example it gives each country the percentage of arable land. Most countries are UNDER 10%. It is incredible to think about that a country has 90%+ land that you CAN’T grow crops on. Ukraine actually has an incredible 56% of the land you can grow food on, one of the highest levels in the world. World Almanacs are another must have book that makes basic facts easy to get at quickly.
I think part of it is really being interested in facts and numbers and enjoying plugging them for a solution. A good place to start for a question is to go to Yahoo or other search engine and ask a question and key it in. Something like Russia and NATO, NATO agreements and treaties, or Ukraine history. Links to this and other information will come up and anyone can go to those that sound interesting.

Nutty idea here. What if Russia annexes Ukraine at the consent of the current Ukrainian government? Just as with the oilers and others who learned you can buy a politician for 5 figures and the whole government for 8 figures, it would be cheaper to just buy out the Ukrainian decision makers. Maybe the amassing of troops is not to fight Ukraine but whomever would then want to attack to prevent the merger. Just a crazy thought. I mean, culturally, aren’t there many similarities between Ukrainians and Russians?
You are correct, there are many similarities between Ukrainians and Russians, all come from the same tribe, in fact, Ukraine used to be Russia (google Kievan Rus) with Kiev as a capitol city of ancient Russia. But things changed and later, Ukraine, as a country, was created. People still very much share culture, language, friendships, and there are many intermarriages.
There were tensions due to certain nationalistic movements, but, in general, people were getting along.
Coup d’etat changed that as it pretty much legalized neo-nazis to whom most people, especially in Eastern Europe, have strong aversion, for obvious reasons.
I do not believe Russia is interested in annexing Ukraine as a whole.
First, Ukraine is bankrupt after 2+ decades of corrupt to the bone governance, Ukraine is completely broke and its industries are shambles. Agro business (despite having a lot of turtle land) is dead. Infrastructure crumbling. Who would want that undertaking?
Second, several western Ukrainian provinces over time, with the help of certain western dogooders, became very nationalistic, anti-all-Russian and even Neo-nazis.
Who would what this headache?
Third, while eastern provinces’ population consist of many ethnic Russians and Russian-speaking Ukrainians, and both are very much pro-Russia, that part of the country is still an economic disaster and it will take a lot of money to bring infrastructure and industry up to date. Again, who wants this undertaking?
I think Russia would be interested in Ukraine staying together, but being federalized, giving regions more powers over their own fate;
because eastern and western regions do not get along at this time and, since blood had been spelt, I do not believe they will be ready for peace talks any time soon.
Federalization would work for all:
western provinces can continue on creating their own little forth reich;
eastern provinces repair their factories and re-establish trade and business relations with Russia and other countries of Customs and (future) Eurasian Unions;
Russia won’t have to worry about having more NATO military bases next door, and about possible civil war in Ukraine as such wars tend to spill over.
I think Russia would be willing to offer financial help to those who respect it, but to annex the whole country would be an economic suicide.
Just my two cents.
Let the nukes fly. Then maybe the world can start over as a better place, if any survive. If not, so be it. Nothing lasts forever.
