Government officials have been closely monitoring the activity in the Yellowstone caldera. However, scientists at NASA have now come up with an incredibly risky plan to save the United States from the super volcano.
A NASA scientist has spoken out about the true threat of super volcanoes and the risky methods that could be used to prevent a devastating eruption. Lying beneath the tranquil and beautiful settings of Yellowstone National Park in the US lies an enormous magma chamber, called a caldera. It’s responsible for the geysers and hot springs that define the area, but for scientists at NASA, it’s also one of the greatest natural threats to human civilization as we know it.
Brian Wilcox, a former member of the NASA Advisory Council on Planetary Defense, shared a report on the natural hazard that hadn’t been seen outside of the agency until now. Following an article published by BBC about super volcanoes last month, a group of NASA researchers got in touch with the media to share a report previously unseen outside the space agency about the threat Yellowstone poses, and what they hypothesize could possibly be done about it.
“I was a member of the NASA Advisory Council on Planetary Defense which studied ways for NASA to defend the planet from asteroids and comets,” explains Brian Wilcox of Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at the California Institute of Technology. “I came to the conclusion during that study that the supervolcano threat is substantially greater than the asteroid or comet threat.”
Yellowstone currently leaks about 60 to 70 percent of its heat into the atmosphere through stream water which seeps into the magma chamber through cracks, while the rest of the heat builds up as magma and dissolves into volatile gasses. The heat and pressure will reach the threshold, meaning an explosion is inevitable. When NASA scientists considered the fact that a super volcano’s eruption would plunge the earth into a volcanic winter, destroying most sources of food, starvation would then become a real possibility. Food reserves would only last about 74 days, according to the UN, after an eruption of a super volcano, like that under Yellowstone. And they have devised a risky plan that could end up blowing up in their faces. Literally.
Wilcox hypothesized that if enough heat was removed, and the temperature of the super volcano dropped, it would never erupt. But he wants to see a 35% decrease in temperature, and how to achieve that, is incredibly risky. One possibility is to simply increase the amount of water in the supervolcano. As it turns to steam. the water would release the heat into the atmosphere, making global warming alarmists tremble.
“Building a big aqueduct uphill into a mountainous region would be both costly and difficult, and people don’t want their water spent that way,” Wilcox says. “People are desperate for water all over the world and so a major infrastructure project, where the only way the water is used is to cool down a supervolcano, would be very controversial.”
So, NASA came up with an alternative plan. They believe the most viable solution could be to drill up to 10km down into the super volcano and pump down water at high pressure. The circulating water would return at a temperature of around 350C (662F), thus slowly day by day extracting heat from the volcano. And while such a project would come at an estimated cost of around $3.46 billion, it comes with an enticing catch which could convince politicians (taxpayers) to make the investment.
“Yellowstone currently leaks around 6GW in heat,” Wilcox says. “Through drilling in this way, it could be used to create a geothermal plant, which generates electric power at extremely competitive prices of around $0.10/kWh. You would have to give the geothermal companies incentives to drill somewhat deeper and use hotter water than they usually would, but you would pay back your initial investment, and get electricity which can power the surrounding area for a period of potentially tens of thousands of years. And the long-term benefit is that you prevent a future supervolcano eruption which would devastate humanity.”
Of course, drilling into a super volcano comes with its own risks, like the eruption that scientists are desperate to prevent. Triggering an eruption by drilling would be disastrous.
“The most important thing with this is to do no harm,” Wilcox says. “If you drill into the top of the magma chamber and try and cool it from there, this would be very risky. This could make the cap over the magma chamber more brittle and prone to fracture. And you might trigger the release of harmful volatile gases in the magma at the top of the chamber which would otherwise not be released.”
The cooling of Yellowstone in this manner would also take tens of thousands of years, but it is a plan that scientists at NASA are considering for every super volcano on earth.

U.S. Has 3.5 Million More Registered Voters Than Live Adults – A Red Flag For Electoral Fraud

According to a new study of U.S. Census data, America has more registered voters than actual live voters. It’s a troubling fact that puts our nation’s future in peril.
The data come from Judicial Watch’s Election Integrity Project. The group looked at data from 2011 to 2015 produced by the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, along with data from the federal Election Assistance Commission.
As reported by the National Review’s Deroy Murdock, who did some numbers-crunching of his own, “some 3.5 million more people are registered to vote in the U.S. than are alive among America’s adult citizens. Such staggering inaccuracy is an engraved invitation to voter fraud.”
Murdock counted Judicial Watch’s state-by-state tally and found that 462 U.S. counties had a registration rate exceeding 100% of all eligible voters. That’s 3.552 million people, who Murdock calls “ghost voters.” And how many people is that? There are 21 states that don’t have that many people.
Nor are these tiny, rural counties or places that don’t have the wherewithal to police their voter rolls.
California, for instance, has 11 counties with more registered voters than actual voters. Perhaps not surprisingly — it is deep-Blue State California, after all — 10 of those counties voted heavily for Hillary Clinton.

He said it’d take him 16 hours to mow 3 acres on his industrial sized law mower… and that he gets paid $500 per hour. Riiiiiight.

They already are drilling into geothermal vents and pumping in water and using the steam to generate electricity. Its a coal fired powerplant with out any coal. Lots of them in Iceland and several in the western part of the USA.

Before throwing insults maybe you should consider that the article is not about whether one can produce electricity from magma, but rather if doing so can stop an eruption. I say no, but it may put it off for a very short while.
Eruptions are non linear events and so are the circumstances that produce them.
I don’t think anyone knows for sure but it seems cosmic ray incidence is linked, and this in turn is linked to solar output inversely.
Therefore there should be increased volcanic and seismic activity going forward and for some years yet.
Some such as myself think the sun is going into a very quiet period of considerable but unknown duration, leading to a higher probability of a very cold period, especially for the northern hemisphere.
Maybe they should tap and cool those three man made suns burning under Japan. Prove they can control the consequences of their actions before shading the skies and tampering with nature. The list of successes is short, so short I cannot find a single one. Their failures however can fill volumes. Now let’s try giving an enema to a supervolcano. Let it be and leave us be. This volcano is like our government, too large to effectively control and both are going to blow, its just a matter of time.

having been a professional geologist I find this totally humorous at best. Adding water will increase the steam pressure upward like happened at the old Roman city that was buried in ash. Your taking a tine effort at best that will have no real effect what so ever except to spend money All you can really do get out of the way and see what happens. A pound of water evaporating (it is pressure dependent) takes give or take 1000 BTUs. In the process its volume (once again gas laws pressure / temp dependent) will expand 1600 times at atmospheric pressure.

Pressures 400 – 850 PSIG, 550 – 850 deg F and 12 MW with all accessory equipment turbines. Started up a modern 60 MW power plant 30 MW gas Turbine, two 15MW steam turbines and operated it for 15 years becoming an operations supervisor. Retired early with a bad ticker. I actually miss it. It was just enough technical / engineering with lots of hands on. The respect we got from the degreed engineers was flattering as we had 2 + decades and a pretty solid technical background to get their attention. We weren’t mere operators but truly “Engineers”.

Coal is rough, liquid fuel isn’t too difficult, gas (LPG / NG / Refinery gas) is a breeze. Old power plans were inside. I worked in 140 deg hear. Illegal but you do what toy have to do. You go in, give that 1000 turn 36″ valve one turn and get out, cool down and then back for another turn.
I computed efficiency (work out / work in) on a condensing turbine. It was in the 90% + using throttle / exhaust. Once you then compute the condenser the unit drops to 30% as 2/3 of the enthalpy goes with the steam to water. Cogen is the way to go. If process needs 50 PSI at 280 deg f @ 1220 enthalpy(trying to remember saturation temp from tables) you generate it at 1000 PSI at 900 def @ 1500 enthalpy, slip stream the mechanical HP and exhaust to process. Interestingly combined cycle power plants have now achieved 55% thermal efficiency with a condenser, amazing.

Three decades of rotating shift work which I never adapted well to, chronic fatigue, always tired. Europe did lots of studies proving the relationship between rotating shift work and heart disease. The job had high stress too when you have a 60MW power plant, servicing an oil refinery under your control. Add in family history (an uncle died at 36 with an MI), grandfather heart disease, father heart disease and a propensity for eating what was tasty but not necessarily healthy along with about 1.5 packs a day for those 30 years. I’ll say I was the poster boy for heart trouble.
Three MIs later, two with VFib, 9 stints, chronic A fib and I’m still here. To anyone listening. If your waiting for numbness in your left arm / shoulder, to indicate that your at on on the verge of an MI so are many in the cemetery. It is generally indicative of an MI but also not the most common symptom. I was very fortunate to go into cardiac arrest not once but twice in the hospital with Physicians or nurses standing over me. It helps the odds of survival greatly.

Not feeling well like a hangover with no headache and you didn’t drink.
Tight chest, weight on chest

Ok I know a bit about steam.I own and play with steam engines. (you can build one from a lawmower engine or buy them on the internet. They don’t need to drill into Yellowstone . All they need to do is pump the water into those gysers. However you could pump the great lakes into Yellowstone and it wouldn’t cool it enough to matter. My steam engine when I shut it down or need to reduce pressure I don’t add cold water. Nope I put out the fire and it cools down. So we need to cool the core if we want Yellowstone to cool off. Yep the way its done is slowly start up and shut down. Thermal shock, water hammer is dangerous, potentially deadly. Turbines in the 100-1000 HP range are pretty cool to operate. Seen the aftermath of a failed overspeed trip. It operated at 3600 RPM. They believe it came apart at about 6000 RPM. Found an impulse blade from it bent to hell 50 yards away after it apparently bounced off I beams, piping and the like. Computed that it came off the rotor at 357 mag velocity.
Ive not got any training or broiler makers license. I just use whatever . old hot water heaters with two pop off valves. Ive made lots of steam had both valves pop off. The heater thumping and jumping up and down. No Broiler explosion yet. I quit using wood fires and switched to LP. I can turn off the LP quickly. A fire is hard to shut down. and you gotta get close to that steam bomb to douse the fire. I use high pressure hose between the broiler and my steam engine so im not close in case it explodes. Steam power is some of the most fun ive ever enjoyed. right up there with sex!
There was an incident where someone decided that a relief valve wasn’t necessary on a home hot water heater and had a bull plug in its place. The thermostatic controls failed, the burner never shut down and the end result was about 1/3 of the home was leveled. I’m not sure of hot water heaters but the safety factor on boilers from ASME Code is 5. So the bursting pressure is 5 x MAWP (maximum allowable working pressure).
My only regret was spending almost all of my adult working life on rotating shift work. I loved the job, hated the hours, I had chronic fatigue from lack of sleep for the better part of three decades. The $$$$ was way too good to walk away from. Its a very interesting line of work too.

Anyone use tool sharpening services. I ran into an old buddy from years ago and we were talking about what we were doing for a living and he told me he works a local lawnmower shops grinding service and sharpens tools. I asked him could he sharpen anything he said yep if it’s got a cutting edge he can make it sharp. He gave me a card. Was thinking about bringing tools in. Just was wondering about rates didn’t ask was kinda in a hurry. This was a few years back don’t know if he’s still doing it but can anyone elaborate on using sharpening services on their knives axes saws scissors and whatever else they cut with. They gotta do a better job than me using files and a stone or grinder. I think they have specialized grinders to keep blades balanced.
They also should have special jigs to keep whatever blade at the right angle. Our guy does our lawnmower, jointer, and specialty blades. I do the chainsaws and woodworking tools.( I have a jig for the grinder). Especially for the lawnmowers/ zero turn, he is a godsend because he’s that good.
Ive been thinking about getting into something like that, only one other guy here doing it and he more specializes in scissors and chefs knives, seems like a good gig, not a lot o money in it but can dovetail with knifemaking and sales
Old guy I’m with you on the do no harm by doing nothing. I have been in situations where there was a window of opportunity to do something but didn’t and kicked myself but have been ok anyway. That’s the thing about life sometimes we come to a crossroad and have to make a call what to do next. I’ve seen people freez up cus they are so used to doing nothing and paid the price for it too. Hesitation is the mother of all fuckups especially when we are talking life and death. I remember a story from 911 twin towers where this woman was over weight and this man dragged her down the stairs injuring her. This is something I’d do but at what point do you give up on her and say I gotta survive. I’m a believer in staying at least fit enough to make a sprint to the exit no matter how far that is. Everyone isn’t capable of being a grunt but striving for that ias much as possible is the goal. People are so used to their ac and heat and clean bedding and clothes with drive up window hot food that the pain and misery of reality will crush people psychologically make will give up and die or call it quit and take their own life. Quite a problem but rather than injecting water into the magma chamber would it not be easier and less risky to just put more water on top of the caldera to contain the pressure? Build some Hoover style dams to on the Yellowstone and whatever other rivers flow out of the caldera and put the weight of 500 or more feet of water over the magma chamber.

This whole supervolcano fear mongering scheme has just revealed itself. The plan all along has been to exploit the geothermal properties of the area for power generation. Knowing that the people would never agree to allowing power companies to come in and ruin the pristine wilderness area with power plants scattered everywhere, they create a problem that generates fear and then come up with a solution that will resolve the problem. This is how the public has been played on everything from wars to accepting being injected with toxins in the name of disease prevention. Earth is in cool down mode, as more heat escapes itself thus warming polar caps releasing more ice into oceans. The net affect is cooling (80% water surface to 20% land surface).
Thus, nature is recycling as it should be. Evolution considered, wars-famine-plagues naturally or with man made events, especially with religion differences, exponential humankind growth is due for a correction soon.
My 2 cents would be: Cool the land mass “around” the caldron (excavate a channel, like the Suez Canal) from the ocean and gradually reduce by induction the surrounding base.

Yellowstone is a threat to civilization in the South, the East, and the Midwest. It is not a grave threat to the West Coast, or Europe, or Asia. And it’s eruption would be an annoyance for the world, in general. Yes, atmospheric dimming is a problem, but Northern Hemisphere nuclear winter is unlikely. Think “a year without a summer”.
Yellowstone, as a hot-spot volcano, can only be “targetted” with geothermal plants by building a new one every couple hundred years. This is due to the movement of the continental plate that the U.S. rides on. (This won’t bother the scientists – they’ll be expecting us to fund a similar project willingly to keep electricity, despite the likelihood of the U.S. being fully solar (or achieving fusion) by then.)

(The gist is that we now know where the plume that fills the known chamber comes from – a bigger, deeper chamber. This bigger chamber was always there, so the eruption chance doesn’t change. Instead, we know how unlikely it is for the pattern of eruptions to end.)
Also not being considered, and probably off-topic, is the preferential absorbtion of high energy rays by the silicates in the magma chamber. (The evidence suggests that the silicates in the magma chamber are the kind that absorb high energy rays. (Figures.)) These high energy rays are apparantly more prevalent in periods of low solar activity due to the ‘thinning’ (in thickness, not quantity) of the Earth’s atmosphere as a result of reduced flaring by the Sun. Each flare adds some energy to the high atmosphere, causing it to expand. High energy rays supposedly have a higher chance to be deflected or absorbed if they interact with air particles farther away from the planet. Also, reduced flaring by the Sun is matched by a weaker solar wind, which reduces the overall particle count in the inner solar system. Finally, hydrogen (the primary constituent of the solar wind) absorbs certain frequencies readily, re-emitting them as heat. (Lots of reasons to dislike a solar minimum plus a planetary magnetic field flip.))
