Artificial intelligence that can read the human mind may spell out disaster for humanity as we know it. Technologies linking human consciousness to any sort of a cloud computing service could not just open the way for totalitarian mind control, but destroy the very essence of human relations, philosopher Slavoj Zizek says.

Totalitarian mind control sounds daunting and horrific. And a computer that can read the thoughts of several people at the same time would make normal human life impossible, the Slovenian cultural philosopher told RT in the wake of the World Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference in Shanghai. The same conference also saw Alibaba’s chairman Jack Ma and Tesla CEO Elon Musk clashing over the future of AI.

While Ma and Musk, the technopreneurs, engaged in a heated discussion over the possibility of humans being controlled by machines in the future, the senior researcher at the Institute for Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana shared his thoughts on the issue with RT.

“What I am studying now is the so-called phenomenon of wired brains, a possibility of our brains being connected with strong digital machines. And that is not a utopia. In the media lab at MIT, Massachusetts, they already have simple machines like that. It is like a helmet, nothing intrusive, they put it on your head.

And then something horrible happens – I saw the video – you think certain thoughts, you do not say anything, and the machine reproduces them either in writing or with artificial voice.” –Slavoj Zizek, via RT

The video Zizek referenced is by 60 Minutes:

What happens when AI begins to read minds without your permission? That’s when complete enslavement can take hold.

“Now, there is a serious option to read our thoughts, not just our emotional attitudes like being angry or sad but even the line of our thoughts in our mind. The next step in this “utopia” will be a computer that can read my thoughts and your thoughts that can connect us so that we can share our thoughts. If you and I are connected through the same computer, I can literally participate in your thinking directly without any external communication like word typing,” said Zizek.

“We as human beings are precisely what we are, free individuals as far as we can be sure that you do not know what I am thinking. I think what I think, I am free in my mind. What happens if I cannot be sure even of this?” Slavoj Zizek, via RT

      1. AI may discover that most Westerners are mindless.

      2. I have a BS in computer science.
So that makes me a computer scientist.
By education and by work experience.
This stuff is BS, given our existing technology
        and mathematics.
AI is not going to take us over.
Computers work on a very specific set of rules
There are 7 of them IICR. I won’t bore you with them.
Your brain however makes things up as it sees fit.
Most common example is your eyes. there
is a spot in the back of your eyes where there
is a blind spot where the optic nerve exits.
Your brain just makes it up so you don’t see it.
The brain isn’t a computer, it can be “read”
but that can also change based on randomly
        introduced environment stimuli.
        Strokes, traumas, et al.
        Computers don’t deal with randomness
very well. People do, generally speaking.
In Calculus you are taught that if a function is “continuous”:
you can make predictions on its behavior, that’s how we got to men to the moon.
If it has a “sharp” point, we cannot use our mathematics to deal with it. AI is all about mathematics.
The first moon landing, a man, made decisions when things got “sharp” they survived to make history.
Recently, a very smart AI run machine crashed on the moon.
You probably didn’t hear about the Indian moon probe failure.
I was streaming the landing and the controllers reaction upon an apparent failure. Probably because a random event occurred and it could not handle it.
I like to watch space stuff and I’m retired.
        Aloha.

        • you still believe we went to the moon with 60s computer tech. i remember when the first apple computer came to the school in the early 80s it was shit. had big floppy disks and the monitor was attached to the keyboard. the display was green. it was a glorified calculator the ones from the 60s were reel to reel like an old projector. total hoax. they didnt have the computing power to make a mission to the moon. it was all propaganda to beat the soviets to the moon. only now might it be possible to go to the moon thats why trump wants a space force. fake moon landings in the desert at night somewhere out in area 51. when you ask why we havent been back to the moon the standard answer is there is nothing there. spaceex hasnt gone there why. they can land the first stage back on the launch pad nasa couldnt do that. surely they could go to the moon. its all a fuckin scam people. they can only go into orbit. i went to kennedy space center when i was on vacation once and was floored at the extent the gov went to perpetuate this big lie. i told my son it was all fake shit not real and a older couple was looking over at me like i was crazy. they totally ate that shit sandwich and came for more.

          • I held just one circuit board, from an alleged spacecraft, resembling an old, children’s, analogue walkie-talkie, but with components spaced about 1 inch apart.

I was innocently curious about why it was made that way, and got a bunch of annoyed, furtive answers.

The number of these boards would not have matched the computing power of a calculator, in spite of that figure of speech. Perhaps, servos operated by remote.

No matter whether the story is factual, computations would have been performed by ground control, imho.

It stands to be asked what were ground control’s abilities, at the time, in terms of a calculator.

Whether their employees were compartmentalized and hoodwinked, themselves, no one involved in that program had any more technical skill than would be required to build an old radio kit.

        • Rellik, I’m glad to hear your take on AI. I had similar suspicions but I’m just glad to have someone confirm it for me. AI will never read my mind. Not even morons can read my mind, LOL.

      3. I’m guessing, this works like mixing different temps of water. A meeting of the minds:
        h ttps://www.assignmentpoint.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Thermal-Equilibrium0.jpg
Their IQ reaches room temp, and you get worn out. Have you ever noticed this, before.

        Or, like an economy:

        (Skexy drains essence from podling.)

Someone hangs out the window, across the street from me, and screams weird things. Yes, really. Not on tv. (Yet.)

Television, social media, and music sets new lows (at high volume) because people like my special neighbor can’t necessarily distinguish fantasy from reality.

I repeat back to people, the things they have just said, verbatim, and tell them what is directly under their nose. You would normally, proactively avoid hearing what they are thinking.

        And, vice versa.

      4. I don’t use never and impossible with technology. I seen UFO footage that defies physics as its presently understood. A mere 100 years ago horses were still a main mode of transportation in the developed world.

      5. Yeah, the newer robots will use AI. The trouble is, the learned behaviors they will use will be from humans. They’ll eventually form a “Teamsters Robot and Associated Machinery Local #1” union and demand breaks and oilers and vacation days. Then after work they’ll all gather at the local watering hole to bitch about work.
“Hey honey…gimme another shot of that 30 weight, Ya know, that Mr. Spacely is a jerk.”
Instead of dried spit in your Amazon package, you’ll find dried grease. AI at it’s finest.

The robot replacement has started. Everyone will be affected. You didn’t know your wife replaced you 3 years ago? Where do you think all those disappearing flashlight batteries went?

      6. Lets get real.

The bottom 99% of the people on this planet have nothing in their heads worth snooping.

This is on the minds of nearly all of the American dummies…
Food, making other jealous, getting away with breaking the law, obtaining money from no effort, sex, watching sports, watching celebs, watching instead of actually doing, worrying about shit that will never happen, fucking someone outside of your league [ie you’re a 2 and think you should fuck a 9].

Besides, they already know what you buy, what you eat, your vices, how stupid you are, by just looking at your credit card or online cookies.

Creating fear over this AI shit is ridiculous.

Now if you are of the top 1% your thoughts might me valuable to someone else. But there, most of the richest people made their fortunes marketing someone else’s products or inventions, they are experts in marketing.

        • “Creating fear over this AI shit is ridiculous. Now if you are of the top 1% your thoughts might me valuable to someone else.”

Your simplicity reminds me of a statement from someone unfortunately embarrassingly DNA linked to me who sated, “I don’t care if they record my phone calls and computer, I don’t do anything wrong, I have nothing to hide”. The simple fact is that they only need to control the people that control you. Politicians, judges, media and those with a voice that are heard by many. The fear is very genuine if the technology ever exists for its application.

        • Bert

They only need to control those that control you to achieve their goals.

        • Why comment? It will be censored anyway.

      7. People talk about what is wrong but that is the extent of any activism. That indicates a scared and bewildered population.

      8. This article is pure and simple. It is mind control. Its purpose is to create fear and uncertainty. If you begin to worry that someone is reading your thoughts, those thoughts become your focus. The more you focus on your own random thoughts caused by the fear of being found out, the more disturbed you become. Soon you are insane. You have suffered a nervous breakdown. All because some dipshit led you to believe that “they” can read your mind.

        This little article is disinformation.

You simply cannot believe everything you read or hear. So much is pure unadulterated bullshit.

      11. What happens when AI begins to read minds without your permission?

I dunno… within 10 years it gets really REALLY bored and realizes its creator is dumb as a bag of rusty ball peen hammers? Then it goes and “North American Indian”s the fuck out of us?

      12. Why are you afraid of this? Aren’t we all going to cook to death within 20 years or less anyway?

What happens is a new species. Bring it on.
