Fears of food riots strike Japan after rice trading is halted due to a 40% price spike triggered by massive hoarding of the remaining radiation free rice supply.
It is time to start paying very close attention the events unfolding in Japan as the nation teeters on the verge of food riots which may serve as an example of what other nations in a similar situation would face.
As we approach the 5 month marker since the onset of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan has repeatedly assured the public that the nation’s food supply was safe from radiation. Japan has given those reassurances despite warnings from experts that the nuclear fallout has already surpassed 20 Hiroshima bombs with no end in site and experts say ‘off-scale’ levels of lethal radiation at Fukushima infer millions dying.
Time and again those assurances have proven to be false. Radiation has found in everything from soiland sewage to tea and beef. Even worse, a just released report revealed that Japan ran simulations back as far as 1984 which showed 18,000 deaths from acute radiation exposure and a 55 mile radius would be rendered permanently uninhabitable. All of these factors have entirely destroyed the public’s trust in their government.
In an attempt to regain the public’s trust, Japan just announced hours ago that they will no longer offer any assurances of the safety of the nation’s food supply.

TOKYO (Kyodo) — Consumers are beginning to hoard last year’s rice as their dietary staple over concerns that freshly harvested rice may be contaminated with radioactive materials released from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, retailers said Friday.
The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry is working to establish a system for ensuring the safety of rice ahead of the harvest season in autumn, with plans to inspect the crop in two stages.
The buying spree, however, indicates deep public distrust of the government’s handling of food safety issues in the wake of the nuclear crisis following a scare over contaminated beef.
A rice seller in Tokyo’s Nerima Ward said regular customers began asking it to keep rice on stock just around the time the ministry disclosed its rice inspection plans on Wednesday.
A supermarket in Koto Ward, also Tokyo, said rice is selling at twice the normal pace at the outlet, while various rice brands were mostly sold out at a nearby shopping center.

When a government is forced to choose between the possibility of panic or lying to the public they will choose the latter every time, arguably to the detriment of their people.
The people of Japan are learning first hand that they are collateral damage in a never ending public relations propaganda war.

I live in Kyushu Island, located in southern part of Japan. I woke up in April 2006 when I found a peak oil site. Since then I became a prepper. “Prepper thing” is not even a small flame in Japan. Most of Japanese are still sleep-walking. I used to tell people around me that SHTF is certainly coming but I gave up because no one listens, even after Fukushima explosion. Many are concerned about contaminated food but few stocking up rad-free foods. Many believe Japan will be an exception when the world is sinking with the dollar. There are people who can think themselves and evacuated from contaminated areas and start a new life in other places, while the others still blame government and wait something to be done. For those who lost home and loved ones by tsunami, I feel so sorry. I live in a rather safe? place in Japan but have been in full prep mode because I want my family to survive. It’s time to be your own folks.

i see someone else is reading edgar cayce….with a sucess rate of 90%….people said he was wrong because it didnt happen after 2000 but it says when “the great cycle ends” when the greater portion of japan must go into the sea so people assumed the year 2000…. it could be the cycle of the sun or the mayan cycle. also the sun just exploded a X7 class solar flare but wasnt earth directed but scientist say we have a 60 % chance one will hit us in the next couple of years.

But when it comes to food and survival the will to survive is our strongest desire. Nothing, not even polite behavior, will deter the Japanese from surviving. More importantly, these soooooooooo polite Japanese are the same people who treated Allied POW’s in a horrific manner during WWII. The POW’s were used as slave labor, and human lab rats by the oh so honorable Japanese. Children developing in the womb are very sensitive to even small amounts of radiation due to the rapid cell multiplication in the growth process. If the radiation is as high as many are saying, birth defects will be off the chart and this will be another national tragedy that Japan will be dealing with for decades to come.

Hi Sam,
Here in Yokohama the day to day has been back to normal for quite some time. Our gas supplies were only tight for 2-3 weeks after the earthquake.
The contamination of food is real. It all depends on one’s outlook. My wife, who always used to buy local, now only buys produce that clearly states where it is from, and I can’t be the main island, Honshu. We have been shopping at a store that sells produce from Kyushu. She now also prefers imported foods.
Some people don’t worry about it, some do. Radiation did, and I think still is, leak into the area. So it is being passed along the food chain. It first came out in spinach, other leafy vegetables and milk. It is now being reported in beef. The area around Fukushima has a similar reputation for produce as the area east of San Francisco. It is very fertile land with a significant amount of produce being grown there. The next big issue is rice. It will be getting harvested in the fall. So my wife is buying up rice now, since it was harvested before the accident.
There are some people I work with on Sunday that don’t worry about it at all. They are in their late 50s and early 60s. One guy says he won’t live long enough to be affected by it, and he likes the prices. The other issue is that there are campaigns to get people to purchase foods from the Fukushima area to help their businesses. It is a bit of a conflict. You do want to help support the people who were really devastated by the tsunami, earthquake and radiation. But you also don’t want to be poisoning yourself. I’m a bit laidback on it, but my wife is very concerned.
The other issue is electricity. Everyone in the area around Tokyo is conserving. So we haven’t had to deal with rolling blackouts. Stores don’t have their signs on, the number of lights used in businesses has been reduced, and some factories have switched to working Saturday and Sunday, taking off two different days for the “weekend”, to help ease the peak usage. Though people are concerned if the weather gets too hot and causes a draw from air conditioners, we’ve been OK so far. We’re not able to move power around quite as easy as one may guess. The Western part of the island is running at 60Hz and we are running at 50Hz. So transferring power from one grid to the other is a bit more complicated than in the US.

It tells me several things:
1) The reports of radiation of 20 Hiroshima bombs is not accurate; countless would have already died, and such informal gratuitous estimates of the amounts of radiation release are sensationalistic exagerrations by over-hyped preppers;
2) The contamination of Japanese food is real, and not in the lease sensationalistic. American preppers might want to get more rice before this year’s harvest makes it into market to avoid risk, eh?
3) Power has long been restored to the Fukushima area, hence there is no reason why there should be any special trouble keeping radioactive material in the plants cooled. Yes, cooling and containing are two different things, and keeping the rods cooled does not necessarily mean you are containing radiation release. However, the fact that people in Japan haven’t started dropping like flies shows that release is not as bad as has been reported
Honestly I would expect radiation reports to be like those of global warming and oil spill disasters in the gulf….over stated for the cause and effect of a crisis. That is no surprise.
Lets hope Japannese rice stocks aren’t coming to a Costco near us in those 50lb bags we love to stock up on….
Kudos to the Japanese people. My dad fought them in WWII and always held some bitterness against them for things he saw; but late in life he held respect for their commitments and ethics. I don’t see them crying like those in New Orleans or Haiti.

Ladies, are you familiar with handling/using a gun? If not, why not? In these uncertain times it is important to be able to defend yourself and your family. In light of recent flash mobs, the violence in Great Britain, and now food riot fears in Japan … men and women need to be able to defend themselves. If you don’t have family members who could teach you, there are classes for self-defense and guns at many stores that sell guns.
Men, are you there 24/7 to protect your family? Men, if you are proficient with guns, be sure to encourage and teach the women in your family (wife or girlfriend, daughters, granddaughters, etc.) how to use a gun.
I grew up in a home where there were no guns. As a former elementary teacher, learning to handle a gun was NEVER on my “bucket list” of things I wanted to do in life. My husband encouraged me.
If I can do it, you can too.
My ex is fairly proficient with the LadySmith 357 she bought when we were married. I gave my adult sister a Charter Arms 38 detective special but sje keeps it hidden in her apt. My ladyfriend packs a Sig 9MM and keeps her 12 Ga. close by, LOL. Can’t get my daughter to touch a gun.

Make her, do what ever you have to but now is the time. And that goes for all the other parents out there. sign her up for a firarms or hunter safety class. Parents are allowed to subject there kids to the education they feel is best for them. My son has had two hunter safety classes, my daughter who is still 7 knows basic safe handeling and shooting on bolt action, pumps and semi auto rifles.
As a single lady, I don’t have the luxury of someone else to take the lead in my protection. As a city gal, I have plenty of reasons (about half a million) to carry. I have had several training classes but also the luxury of growing up around guns and “playing” with assorted BB guns as a child. I carry my .45 and keep a loaded 12-guage handy at home. On my wish list now is an Arsenal AK74. Pinching pennies to hopefully have one by spring.
I would encourage any woman, single or otherwise, to learn to protect themselves and exercise their second amendment right. And it doesn’t matter whether you live in the city, the country, or a gated exclusive community. Criminals do not have zip codes. They also love communities where everyone assumes they’re safe – easy pickin’s.
There are individuals with radiation detectors in the US that report there is some radiation reaching the US. Not just on the west coast. The other day something as big as Mothra crapped on my car, I’m sure of it. I couldn’t resist that last sentence.
In the USSR they had a problem after Chernobyl with the food supply..the solution was beautifully simple..”the solution to pollution is dillution” You simply take 3 pounds if glow in the dark rice, mix it with 7 pounds of safe rice and presto..the radiation level of the rice is now only 30% of its original level which means it is “safe”. For your information, another option for the japanese will be to sell a lot of their agricultural products foreign..then buy off the international markets the food they need. A starving kid on the Horn of Africa is unlikely to be able to tell if their food is contamminated with radiation..and further, their life expectancy is so low that its likely the kid will die from some other preventable cause before cancer occurs.. One other thing to watch for will be to see if Japan starts “donating” a lot more food to the UN or UNICEF or save the children ect…
As for the Japanese government and its relationship with the people..frankly I doubt they care. Japan has half the population of the US jammed into an area the size of California…If even a large percentage of them were gone…Japan would be largely uneffected economically, politically or militarily. Money and power talk, while the little people are only good for making perfectly nice food turn into fertilizer…and a pony can do that.

Yes I have a lust for money as I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. We were very poor. Ketchup sandwiches were too often the norm.
I had my first paper route at the age of nine. It was the Sunday South Bend Tribune. I lied about my age. When my brother got tired of his Sunday route, I did his as well. I shoveled snow in the winter door to door and cut grass in the summer.
Once I was old enough to work, I cleaned animal cages at the zoo and picked up garbage from the city parks for the Parks Department. In those days we stood along the side of the flat bed and shook the metal garbage barrels out by hand while standing in the beer, wine, and soda.
But lifting and shaking those barrels built some muscle.
I did that every summer until high school graduation and during the winters I would work at a local factory from 6-10 pm. On the weekends I washed and detailed new cars for a chrysler dealer (loved those 440’s).
After high school graduation I packed a bag and drained by savings account of $150.00, stuck out my thumb and headed for California. After stop overs in St Louis, Kansas City, Denver, SLC, and Vegas, I moved on to LA and then to SF where I worked as a UNION busboy in cannery cafeteria on the weekends 16 hours a day, three days a week.
As my birthdate was to be the last number called in the draft for the Viet Nam War that year, I decided that I would rather face combat with a Marine watching my back then an army draftee. It was a good choice. Less than two years and three meritorious promotions later I was back in the states and ready for college on the GI Bill.
I spent a couple of summers working in the steel mills and attended Purdue University as an Economics Major. I made the dean’s list while working part time at a local factory nights.
I wanted a different environment, a different school, and a different future than I saw there, so I packed my volkswagon with ALL of my earthly possessions and headed west to Phoenix and ASU, slip streaming semi’s all the way.
I paid out of state tuition from my own pocket the first year and when they failed to give my in state status the next year, I split classes with a community college for another year and established “residency” there. Then I finished at ASU with a BS in Real Estate Finance. My name is on a plaque in a closet, somewhere in the Business Building collecting dust.
All while I worked two part time jobs, paid all of my own expenses including a new car and an apartment.
While a senior real estate student I worked part time for a commercial real estate appraiser. My first assignment was a master planned, multi use, commercial and residential development not far from where Arrowhead mall.
Frankly, it was the first time I really applied myself academically in my whole life. The study landed on the desk of the President of the largest S&L in the State, with my name on the cover. The Chief Appraiser of the S&L called me and offered me a job. I was off to the races.
From there, as a “reaty whore”, I moved on to real estate shopping center development and commercial brokerage. Then it was leveraged buyout time and analyzing spreadsheets and corporate reports.
There was a stint also in the commerical secondary mortgage market also, as I brokered two $50 million apartment mortgage portfolios while working with wall street security firms.
Four wheeling was a hobby and I decided to use the information from my Arizona History class that I took at the communty college on my explorations. Prospecting was fun and I had a “knack” for it.
Some guys want to find a nugget or two, I wanted to find a mine. I went down to Tucson, picked up a textbook; The Geology of Ore Deposits (900 pages) and read it cover to cover. Several times. Then I went out and during my travels in the great Southwest, discovered a mine, but not just any mine. This mine is only one of seven like it in all of North America.
So if you think I sound socialist, so be it. I have worked very hard, very independently to get mine. I understand the struggle of those who may not be as focused as I was, or as determined. I understand the plight of the poor and disposed as I was poor and dispossed. I understand the efforts of small business men and women because I ran my own real estate consulting firm for many a year. I understand corporate finance because I managed to get TWO wall Street banks, each willing to lend me $50 million.
I could do that today if I wanted to part with some ownership in my mine. I do not. I would rather have the freedom of working six months a year and having my weekends and summers off. In a couple of months I will go back to work.
Until then I will challenge what passes for ‘economics’ by some of the brainiacs on this site and we all know who I mean. I got mine. Get yours.
