“Cultural Schizophrenia”: US Media No Longer Reports Facts, But Appeals To Emotions

The mainstream media in the United States has made a shift in the past few decades.  Now, they appeal to emotions as opposed to reporting the facts. This “cultural schizophrenia” is tearing the U.S. apart at the seams.

Based on the conclusions to a RAND Corporation study, the mainstream media is actively sowing discord in American society, award-winning journalist Chris Hedges tells RT. The media is focusing on making two sides hate each other instead of reporting on the facts, and the majority of the public is unaware and doesn’t care that their minds are being manipulated by their own emotional responses.

The study, which was released by RAND earlier this week, states that between 1987 and 2017, news content has shifted from event- and context-based reporting to coverage that is more subjective, relies more heavily on argumentation and advocacy, and includes more emotional appeals.According to RT,  prime-time cable news shows and online journalism lead the way in this shift to emotional and hate-based rhetoric. It has been noticed in print journalism as well, the government-funded think tank concluded. This is contributing to what RAND termed “Truth Decay.” This is described as a shift away from facts and analysis in public discourse.

Hedges claims that the deterioration of the mainstream media is “far worse” than the RAND report suggests. And he isn’t alone in that assessment.

[American journalist Matt]Taibbi says that the result of this journalistic decay and emotional fear mongering is a public addicted to hating each other. Americans have become addicted to the news that agrees with their bias, and it was set up that way on purpose. The only thing anyone will hear when they turn on the news are stories specifically crafted to manufacture outrage, make you hate the other side, and fuel the addiction to anger.SHTFPlan

The mainstream media has succeeded in addicting the average American to anger and hatred. The idea that the media could profit off of facts was lost long ago. Commercial structure that created the old media is gone and it has eviscerated journalism within the country because it is not sustainable. We saw it with the collapse of the classified advertising, which was 40 percent of the newspapers’ revenues. It is not sustainable economically anymore, Hedges said.

It is becoming difficult to tell apart facts and opinion now, and people believe whatever they want to believe, Hedges explained. We spent years watching CNN and MSNBC promoting this conspiracy theory that Trump was a Kremlin agent… It was all garbage but it attracted viewers,Hedges added as an example. And, if you don’t mind your IQ dropping, turn on MSNBC for just a few minutes. It’s likely you’ll still hear something about Russiagate to keep the public pissed off beyond comprehension.

Now people can claim their emotions as facts and never have to actually view anyone who disagrees with them as a fellow human being.  This will be successful at keeping the fighting amongst the public as the politicians steal more of their money, take away more of their freedom, and get away with it.

“It creates cultural schizophrenia, Hedges said, noting that he observed this during the collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. At that time, the media drove antagonisms and hatreds between ethnic groups. Similar things are happening in the US right now, as right-wing media are demonizing Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama by comparing them to Hitler and the left-wing media label all Trump supporters as racists and deplorables,Hedges said. It all creates societal fragmentation and discord,” Hedges told RT. “These schisms could lead to civil unrest – that is what happens here.”

“You can sway a thousand men by appealing to their prejudices quicker than you can convince one man by logic.”

      1. I call most of this BS. out here in the rest of the US it’s not so. People in the a few cities may be at each others throats, but here in the hustings it’s not that way. Lately I have noticed people of different races holding doors for each other and treating people of all types with respect. I bought a MAGA hat just to piss off liberals. So far all I’ve had are complements and I’ve been in about 18 states. Even College students in Pizza stops have complemented me. AND I VERY MUCH DISLIKE THE SITES NEW LOOK.

        • These “sh*t fan sites” are ALWAYS looking for the worst of everything but never anything positive.Best thing you can do is STOP spending so much time on the Internet and get outside and enjoy life.

        • I think you missed the point. It is not about the people, but the media. I see it. The media pushes their socialist agenda with personal stories about some poor person in some obscure place that is hurt by this or that law the disagree with or program they want and don’t have. Kind of like poor products using testimonials instead of scientific evidence of their products. Remember for every rule their is an exception, and the media is using the exceptions to push their socialist agenda.

      2. Source of this story is RT=Russia Today
You do the math if this source can be trusted?

Let us all know when you find the weapons of mass destruction that the Iraq war was predicated upon.

        • This report presents a quantitative assessment of how the presentation of news has changed over the past 30 years and how it varies across platforms.

The information was complied from RAND Corporation.

RAND Corporation (“Research ANd Development”)[8] is an American nonprofit global policy think tank[1] created in 1948 by Douglas Aircraft Company to offer research and analysis to the United States Armed Forces. It is financed by the U.S. government and private endowment,[6] corporations,[9] universities[9] and private individuals.[9] The company has grown to assist other governments, international organizations, private companies and foundations, with a host of defense and non-defense issues, including healthcare. RAND aims for interdisciplinary and quantitative problem solving by translating theoretical concepts from formal economics and the physical sciences into novel applications in other areas, using applied science and operations research.

          • K2, thanks for the reminder about rand. I have read about them years ago and forgot about them. I have become a lot more a pessimistic a-hole because no one wants to hear about things like this. You have more patience than me by a long shot (a virtue I have never had much of). When people give me lemons I make lemonade, drink it, then piss it back in their face lol. The sad thing is there are a lot of idiots like seminole that are beyond help. So I just piss in their face because it’s about all I can do.

            • Genius

Seminole Wind performs a very valuable service. He keeps the conversation going thus requiring more and more evidence to be presented. It’s not about him, it’s about the readers passing through who get informed. The fence sitters read, some reason and an opinion is formed. I think of him as reverberation.

      3. I never use social media and have absolutely no trust in the MSM, the FBI/DOJ, the federal government in general, etc.

      4. The MSM ostensible purpose is to report the news, its true purpose is to manipulate public opinion. I can picture retired Soviet KGB agents drinking vodka and having a discussion on being bewildered how those damn Americans could actually get their people to believe the bullshit they say.

      5. All of these people suffering sluggish… ahem… I mean, cultural schizophrenia… are regurgitating talking points, from a too-big-to-fail state media outlet.

The agitprop that puts us at eachother’s throats has never existed under free market conditions.

        • . . .sluggishly progressing schizophrenia. . .

term used by (((soviet psychiatrists))) to describe those who were slow to suck (((soviet cock)))

rand corporation’s real name – bland corporation, as revealed in motion picture (((doctor stranglelove)))

      6. Simply reporting all of the facts about a subject and letting the public decide, conflicts with the journalistic ethics now being followed. Guiding the public to make the “right decisions” and not reporting anything that might confuse them is considered the ethical thing to do. Walter Cronkite is spinning in his grave!

      7. 1987? Around 1976 I noticed we past the point where a middle class wage earner could support his family–after that, he had to send his wife out to work to maintain what he/she thought of as their necessary standard of living.
Then came kids raised by the state, with less and less parents at home when they got back from school.
Where is John Cameron Swayze when we need him?

      9. Feminism! Totally. Anti-intellectual feminism. Truth subordinated by “feelings’. Oh ya, here are the results now.

      10. Yes, been known for a long time that’s the way it works. The SATAN principle used on Adam and Eve.

      11. In the past, women were too busy running a household and raising kids to read the newspaper. Chores took a lot of time in the day.

By the 1970s women were liberated from chores (washing machine, take away food, vacuum cleaners, maid services etc.), had fewer children, and were now looking for work so they could fulfilled (remember the zip less f#ck?).

They now needed to pay attention to the media to get current with events and business trends. But that stuff was boooring!!! Written by bow-tied white guys. So editors spiced it up with “issues” journalism: starving kiddies, gay issues, etc. And lots of coverage of cooking, fashion, etc.

And thus journo-tainment was invented. It looked like Journalism but it was “passionate”, “opinionated”, and biased. Just like that woman your grandmother used to talk to over the garden fence. Only that woman was now wearing high heels, had a ton of makeup on, and was fronting the local news cast. Still a gossipy little b#tch, she was now pulling in north of six figures doing what she once did for free for any sap who would listen.
