In Europe, when it gets serious, you have to lie… at least if you are an unelected bureaucrat like Jean-Claude Juncker. In Russia, however, when it gets serious, attention immediately turns to the children.
Which is why we read a report in Russian website Znak published Tuesday, according to which Russian state officials and government workers were told to bring back their children studying abroad immediately, even if means cutting their education short and not waiting until the end of the school year, and re-enroll them in Russian schools, with some concern. The article adds that if the parents of these same officials also live abroad “for some reason”, and have not lost their Russian citizenship, should also be returned to the motherland. Znak cited five administration officials as the source of the report.
The “recommendation” applies to all: from the administration staff, to regional administratiors, to lawmakers of all levels. Employees of public corporations are also subject to the ordinance. One of the sources said that anyone who fails to act, will find such non-compliance to be a “complicating factor in the furtherance of their public sector career.” He added that he was aware of several such cases in recent months.
It appears that the underlying reason behind the command is that the Russian government is concerned about the optics of having children of the Russian political elite being educated abroad, while their parents appear on television talking about patriotism and being “surrounded by enemies.”
While we doubt the impacted children will be happy by this development, some of the more patriotic locals, if unimpacted, are delighted. Such as Vitaly Ivanov, a political scientist who believes that the measure to return children of officials from studying abroad, is “long overdue.” According Ivanoc, the education of children of the Russian elite abroad is subject to constant ridicule and derision against the ruling regime. “People note the hypocrisy of having a centralized state and cultivating patriotism and anti-Western sentiment, while children of government workers study abroad. You can not serve two gods, one must choose.”
On the other hand, political analyst Stanislav Belkovsky quoted by Znak, believes that such decisions should be approached with more pragmatism. Such a recommendation is more likely to lead to an outflow of officials from the state, rather than allow the return of the children studying at elite foreign universities. He also warned of attempts to recreate an echo chamber such as that experienced after the failed July coup attempt on Turkey’s President Erdogan.
But what he said next was more disturbing: “On the one hand, this is all part of a package of measures to prepare the elites for some ‘big war’ even if it is rather conditional, on the other hand – this is another blow to the unity of President Putin with his own elite” Belkovsky said. He adds that the Western sanctions launched in March 2014, had sought to drive a wedge between Putin and elites. In response, the Kremlin began to act precisely according to the logic of these sanctions. “But while a ban for having assets in the West is one thing, and understandable, when it comes to a ban for offshore health and education services, the blowback will be far greater, as it represents a far more important element of the establishment’s life strategy.”
Ultimately the motivation behind Putin’s decision is unclear: whether it is to show Russia’s high-ranking oligarchs who is boss, to boost a sense of patriotism among the nation by sending a symbolic message that the west is no longer a welcome destination for Russia’s rich kids, or just a preemptive move of repatriating of any individuals affiliated with Russian politics for other unknown reasons; however it underscores the severity of the ongoing diplomatic crisis and just how significant the upcoming isolation between Russia and the West is likely to become in the coming months – unless of course tensions deescalate dramatically in the very near future – resulting in even greater collapse in global commerce and a further slowdown to world economic growth, which may ultimately lead to an armed conflict, whether regional or global, as the only possible outcome.

I find myself looking for some semblance of logic in all the inanities that fill the news. Forget the elections. They are surely a farcical scheherazade. I lived through the Vietnam and Cold War years. What is happening now seems more like “Wag the Dog” than it does during those years of tension and air raid drills.
I cannot help but wonder. Maybe, JUST MAYBE something else is coming. Not Wikileaks, not war, not climate change, not financial collapse. Maybe this scheherazade is necessary to redirect the public from something much larger. A reason why Russia just completed a drill to practice evacuating all of their population (Moscow, at least) to underground shelters. Or why stories of underground shelters and installations have occurred all over the globe? Or why The NY Fed recently moved operations to Chicago for cryptic reasons involving a “natural disaster” (perhaps an asteroid-induced tsunami?). A reason for tweaking and recently testing the enhanced Emergency Broadcast System. A reason why there is suddenly all this talk about blasting rockets and now even people off to Mars. Why recent missions aggressively focused on flying off to and even landing on asteroids (kind of like the movie “Armageddon”?). As well as using “threats of wars” to explain the movement of missile systems capable of being armed with nuclear warheads in many locations. Maybe it is not each other the nations plan to shoot at. Maybe we have something coming….something big?

The reason I wonder that, is because 1) it would actually reverse the apparent insanity and show that major preparations are being made in a way to avoid mass panic. 2)I have always been interested in and studied astronomy. In recent months, there have been quite a few near-misses and even some smaller impacts. One of the sites I follow is listed below. Towards the bottom of this site, which is updated everyday, is the “PHA” (Potentially Hazardous Asteroids”) section. The key thing to note is first, how many there are. Second, how many are listed as near-misses and ESPECIALLY how most were not known about until days (at most) before they just miss us. Know that the chart is not all-inclusive. You could look at it in a couple of days or weeks and see more that are also near-misses and not known about that were not on the list today.
To read this chart, the first column is the designation of the asteroid. On the web page, you can click on that to get a plethora of technical information. Usually the year it was discovered is listed first. See all of the 2016s? They would probably have only been known about for days, rather than weeks or months ago. The date of the near-miss is next. Then the distance from Earth. “LD” stands for “Lunar Distance”. So if the distance of the near-miss is 1LD, that would be the average distance between The Earth and The Moon (238,855.708 miles).
THERE ARE SEVEN NEAR-MISSES OCTOBER 11 TO 16, 2016….NONE of those were listed one month ago! Odds are, if you look again in a week or two (maybe less) there could be more. Some have passed as close, or nearly as close as the orbits of the satellites that circle The Earth! Last week, only THREE of them had been added!

RUSSIA has taunted us by saying “without us, how will you get to The ISS? By using a TRAMPOLINE?”. Many of those most brilliant scientists and engineers that once worked for NASA, were let go. So now we rely on private entities to basically start over….to think we once led the space race…! Is Space-X legit? I cannot say. Not to mention that it seems NOBODY can (or is willing) to explain the recent failure of one of their launch vehicles. It is a long trip to Mars. Getting a probe or even a rover onto the surface is one thing. Have they solved the problems associated with the supply of oxygen, water and food for a manned mission? Or the ability of the human body to operate that long of a round trip plus time spent hopping around on the surface of Mars without any gravity, or at least without having full gravity? I have always read that nuclear or ion propulsion systems would work the best but they are nixed because of political and environmental concerns should an accident cause atmospheric contamination. The further the trip into space with a manned mission, the exponentially greater capacity (physical space and size) the vehicle would need for fuel, food, water and supplies. I could not imagine flying a newer design that far without having a ton of room for spare parts. If you watch Apollo 13, at the very least, they knew that their trip would take them no further than ~239k miles from Earth. MARS? That range can vary between ~34 million and ~249 million miles from Earth. So significant “engine trouble” while at their destination could add some appreciable distance and time, as well as supply demands to a return trip. How would humans on that long of a voyage handle solar radiation, potential impacts of CMEs (solar flares), etc? Lots of variables that, last I read, need to be solved FIRST, before presidents and Space-X founders make such bold statements about landing manned missions on Mars in the next couple of decades.
