If you live in and around Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi you might want to consider the following – then again, if you’re reading this web site you probably already have:
In May, the federal government simulated an earthquake so massive, it killed 100,000 Midwesterners instantly, and forced more than 7 million people out of their homes. At the time, National Level Exercise 11 went largely unnoticed; the scenario seemed too far-fetched — states like Illinois and Missouri are in the middle of a tectonic plate, not at the edge of one. A major quake happens there once every several generations.

National Level Exercise 11, or NLE 11, was, in essence, a replay of a disaster that happened 200 years earlier. On Dec. 16, 1811, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit the New Madrid fault line, which lies on the border region of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. It’s by far the largest earthquake ever to strike the United States east of the Rockies. Up to 129,000 square kilometers [50,000 square miles] were hit with “raised or sunken lands, fissures, sinks, sand blows, and large landslides,” according to the U.S. Geological Service. “Huge waves on the Mississippi River overwhelmed many boats and washed others high onto the shore. High banks caved and collapsed into the river; sand bars and points of islands gave way; whole islands disappeared.” People as far away as New York City were awakened by the shaking.
More quakes, of a similar size, followed. But the loss of life was minimal: Not too many people lived in the area at the time. Today, there are more than 15 million people living in the quake zone. If a similar quake hit, “7.2 million people could be displaced, with 2 million seeking temporary shelter” in the first three days, FEMA Associate Adminsitrator William Carwile told a Congressional panel in 2010. “Direct economic losses for the eight states could total nearly $300 billion, while indirect losses at least twice that amount.”

Though there is debate over whether or not a New Madrid earthquake is due, the prudent thing to do would be for every individual and family to prepare. The Federal government will be capable of a very limited response, especially in a region-wide disaster on the scale of a 7.7 quake. This means that if it, or even a lower magnitude quake were to take place, individuals would be on their own, and it would be a long time before help arrived:
“Electric power would go out, not for days, but for weeks and months in the four state region,” he said. “Municipal water systems, they all run on electricity, don’t they? Well, people are gonna get thirsty. You need water for firefighting, don’t you? Second, all gasoline pumps run on electric power. Same with diesel fuel. So in terms of road mobility, of getting the relief forces in, and evacuating people out — no gasoline? The cascading failures go on and on.”
In such an event, there would likely be significant strain on the rest of the nation as well. It has also been postulated that a large enough quake in the region could potentially cause flooding for hundreds of miles, literally expanding the width of the Mississippi River and potentially submerging areas of Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
In addition to the well known natural potential for a major earthquake in this area, oil drilling utilizing hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has been active on a mass scale, theoretically increasing the likelihood of a major earthquake:
Canadian Geologist Jack Century crusades against induced seismicity from irresponsible drilling. In a 2009 speech before the Peace River Environmental Society, he provided a brief explanation of how fracking induces earthquakes, completely refuting industry denial that fracking causes quakes. Fracking induces not only micro- and mini-seismic actions that can compromise the integrity of well casings, but also large earthquakes registering on the order of 5 to 7 on the Richter Scale, resulting in human deaths.

While quakes may be a normal occurrence in Arkansas and the surrounding region, recent earthquake data is alarming and may be the reason why the government has been performing simulations and drills:
When comparing Arkansas’ earthquake history with its drilling history, a causative correlation becomes obvious.
The entire 19th century saw 15 recorded earthquakes and none in the first decade of the new century. A total of 694 quakes rocked Arkansas in the 20th century. That number was surpassed in 2009-2010, with the bulk (483) occurring the last three months of 2010.

It’s clear that the potential for a major event in this area is more likely now than at any time in the last 100 years.
FEMA and local emergency management personnel should be focusing their preparedness efforts directly on the individuals in these regions, advising those who live within the seismic zones that in an emergency, no one will be coming to assist, or response will be limited. Currently, the overwhelming focus of their efforts is direct response from government personnel.
Rather than “See Something, Say Something” DHS ads at local grocery stores and retail outlets, perhaps a better strategy would be to promote individual preparedness concepts such as asking people if they have a 30 day preparedness plan, and then going on to describe essential strategies in the event of a an earthquake emergency that include information such as:
- Water and Food
- Medical Supplies
- Disaster Tools
- Emergency Evacuations Plans
- What to do when an earthquake strikes if you’re outside, in your home, or in your car
- And, dealing with critical rescue response if a friend or family member has been trapped under debris
We urge those of our readers in these areas to learn more about personal earthquake response, as well as to coordinate efforts with friends and family outside of the seismic regions in the event you have to evacuate. This includes preparing yourself and family for making the evacuation journey on foot, bikes, or four wheel vehicles, as well as multiple pick-up locations where your contacts can meet you along your evacuation route and when (i.e. — within 3 days of quake we should be here, etc.).

Dr. Paul, who I know most here are fans of and I am not, had a nice comment about FEMA and our Govt in the wake of the Hurricane this weekend – we’re creating a government dependant society. People need to prepare for themselves…..I suspect 99% of those who read this blog are prepared to take care of themselves in such a crisis.

A earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone is something I dread and pray it does not happen. there is alot of good folks in Tennessee,Kentucky,Arkansas,and Missouri. If this were to happen it would be Katrina times 100. This scenario is frightening and I hope it never comes. This would be the straw that puts our economy to the brink. This black boy in New York will pray for you guys in the cross hairs of this earthquake zone.

Fatty, we here up north are generally better preped than the standard big-city living sheeple. I think this is somewhat due to being raised in an enviornment where it is expected you have your sh!t in a pile – I am assuming you don’t live in one of the large cities. Don’t get me wrong, plenty of preppers in the cities, but the way of life is different and thier needs and preps are different from ours. Earthquake preps are not too different from what we have to be preped for generally speaking.

Go Pack Go!!! From one cheese head to another. Out here in Washington state now and I have experienced several earthquakes first hand. I must admit that I do not think the infrastructure back there would hold up as it dose here. They have had plenty of practice out here. However, one tornado here and this place would be wiped clean.

I am in Eastern Wa. and went through an earth quake while working in Redmond few years ago (2001 I think) and I don’t think they are prepared on the west coast for much of anything. Most people have never even heard of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. IMHO to many sheeple over on the west side.

Received a suspicious survey call from a company in Canada about Smart Meters today. Questions appear to be interested in how I use, track and spend energy, and how smart I am about what is going on in the world. Since I follow your site and many others, just wanted to put this out there. Thought is rather suspicious in the current climate. Also my son lives in Chicago and had experience quakes while attending SIU (close to border of MO, KY & TN a few years ago…not a pleasant experience.
Not mentioned in the article is the major pipeline system that runs through that area. “THE” major oil and natural gas pipelines for the whole country. The bridges that cross “old man river”. When they had the big flood some years back it took out a major bridge. The bridge was out for 6 months, I heard. The 5.3 in Colorado and 5.9 in Virginia are on a line that bisects the New Madrid fault line. Probably not a good way to scientifically approach the matter, but interesting. The only natural disaster that I can think of that would be worse is the mega-volcano in Yellowstone. Nothing between Yellowstone and the Great Lakes would be inhabitable. Or maybe a tsunami created by an underwater land slide in the Canary Islands. Or maybe a giant meteor the size of the national debt crashing into earth. Or maybe this is too much fun…..

Here in Miss-ippi, most have heard of the New Madrid, but nearly no one knows or understands anything about it. In the event of a major quake, I wonder how much of this state would be destroyed?

I live in CA (don’t laugh not everyone here is a Liberal) they have been telling us for years that the big one is coming. The truth is there is no true way to say with any certainty when or how large an Earthquake is going to be. Always have water, medical supplies, food, and a clear plan in place. Practice keeps panic down and when you have a level head you can keep everyone safe. Take care everyone.

I used to live in OC then moved to the IE in 87. After I woke up in the mid 90’s I realized that there were very few routes out in the event of any kind of problem. Got my poop in a group and moved out. Roughly where are you in CA?
Up by Sacramento….Where is IE?? I don’t realy like to travel and CA is a huge state. I would never want to even visit OC let alone live there good choice to get out.
IE is the Inland Empire. It consists of Riverside/Corona and down thru Elsinore/Temecula, San Bernardino to the east and just below the San Gabriel Mountains in the communitites of Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland and Ontario.
With LA and Orange County to the west you basically have about 15 to 20 million people in a huge basin with less than 10 routes out. There is no way to evacuate…I cannot begin to imagine what it will be like in a SHTF scenario.

That’s the least of our worries. No one here has said so as of yet, but the NM Fault zone is a nexus for several large oil pipelines and at least four major natural gas pipelines bringing gas to the upper Midwest. Then there are also the approximately fifteen nuclear power plants that are located within the NM seismic zone. In addition to these, there is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve that is stored in salt domes at four facilities along the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana and Texas.
Picture a 9.2 New Madrid earthquake in the middle of winter, accompanied not least by several simultaneous nuclear reactor meltdowns and a huge petroleum release into the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. Then think of how our rulers would respond. They, who are more interested in poking around your granny’s drawers at the airport than they are in drawing up plans to disperse sensitive facilities to minimize the impact of such an event, will exploit the situation to dispose of the last pitiful vestiges of constitutional government. It will not be about RESCUE or RELIEF, but CONTROL.

I heard on the radio this morning that some of the money slated for Joplin, Missouri has been been taken away and is being diverted to the east coast hurrican damaged areas.
Another thing I want you to think about. Has anyone heard of the midwest that was flooded this past spring to save the oil industry and metropolitine areas of the south? They are still flooded. Millions of acres that have not and will not be planted to feed our nation.
Where is the money that should be going to Texas, Arizona and New Mexico because of the damages caused by the fires this past summer?
The Government doesn’t have the money to take care of all the disasters that are happening in our country. Yet they tell the American people that everything is fine and the economy is coming back.
Georgia missed the Welfare checks and food stamp date here reasently. Did you see the flood of people that presented themselves because they had the right to the money and food stamps that the government promised them?
There is just not enough money to go around. With 57% persent of the people that still have jobs trying to support 43% of the American population. Something is going to give pretty darn soon. Then all he%% is going to break loose from every corner of our country.

I honestly the flooding actually helps to soften the topsoil and underground, just a theory, I also read on the Intel hub the Virginia quake had a nuke signature to the graph. How true this is I don’t know, but I believe they are intentionally trying to set off the New Madrid, whether by Haarp or other applications!

The last time the New Madrid fault went off, it changed the course of the Mississippi river. If it goes off again, we might end up with the U.S.A. looking like the prediction that Edgar Cayce made.
chuckles, you are thefirst person in my memory who has actually mentioned the historical fact that the new madrid earthquake caused the mississippi river to run backwards…thattaboy! you reckon if it happens again it might put the river right? would be nice to have something that does not run ass backwards for a change. chances are slim to none though. i think another earthquake of that magnitude will just finish what the first one did not do…and we will be doomed to suffer for it in one way or another.

North America has been really blessed as far as huge disasters go, so far. Odds are we might get something big, sooner rather than later. Laundry day is my biggest crisis.
We won’t ALWAYS be watching other people’s misery on TV.
IMHO, the sad part is that the cable networks spent about three days covering the hurricane (in large part because it was an east-coast event) that–in all honesty–wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I would imagine that an amazingly devastating quake in the midwest would only warrant a few hours of cable network coverage because it happened in fly-over country; Ok, maybe a few more hours than that but then they’ll be back to more “important” east-coast matters.

Be it economic collapse, the New Madrid Super Shaker, the Yellowstone Super Volcano, an EMP or the Solar Flare of Flares, I’m setting on a few hundred cans of food and as many pounds of corn, rice and wheat, a few thousand rounds of ammo and a 150 gal of fuel.
But, none of that really matters. What matters is, in my head I’ve run every scenario and, frankly, no amount of prepping makes me feel safe. What makes me feel safe is that I can fix things you’re not supposed to able to fix and do things you’re not supposed to be able to do because I did them for years when we ran a farm without money. …or at least very little.
We fished and we hunted and we had a 5 acre garden.
The only thing that is really important is the attitude. The disaster doesn’t matter. I will survive, the disaster doesn’t matter. Preps or no preps, you have to be able to do stuff.
I agree with your attitude. I made a living for decades doing things that left some folks speechless. It is in the thinking….here’s what needs to happen, how do we make it happen? Can’t doesn’t work.
Too True! That’s actually the only thing I DO feel good about with my preps. Most of my preparation has been learning survival skills. I also have a couple of good survival books in my bug-out bag which is something I would have with me even in the worst situations. No fear of losing them in an earthquake. If I lose them, I’ll be attached to them. LOL.
Like you, I’ve lived on a farm in one place or another all my life. I learned a lot of things that most people wouldn’t know where to begin with.
p.s. a FIVE ACRE GARDEN?….dang, that’s a big garden. We’ve gardened on half that and raised more crops (and a little hell too) than we could eat. We’d give a lot of our overage to family and friends. They were always appreciative. I bet they will be more so after TSHTF.

A lot of details, down to impacts to hospital, bridges, buildings. One thing to note is several major gas supply lines go across the fault. Even if you are not close, gas supplies could be impacted in your area.

Two Separate Countries
The area of water in the middle of . . . the United States was massive, and was widest or most extensive in the north. There were no Great Lakes as I had known them, for all of them had come together into this huge sea that extended northeastward into the ocean. The inland sea also extended southward, filling most of the Mississippi an Missouri River valleys and widening by many, many miles the Mississippi River where it flows into what we know as the Gulf of Mexico. This sea was so vast that I knew it could not be bridged, and so in essence the United States had become as two separate countries.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 – Dream
I awoke trembling and shaking at 5:00 in the morning after having a startling dream. This was one of the three most profound dreams that I have ever had during the ministry the LORD has called me to. I feel that this dream is an addendum to the vision I had on April 27, 2008.
In this dream I saw the words wind and water. I only saw the words but did not actually see any wind or water damage. I then found myself overlooking a river which instantly became so wide that I could no longer see either of its banks. The dream then shifted, and I was with one of my parishioners running through what appeared to be an old abandoned school house. This empty building began to shake. The shaking was so violent and severe that it was like the bucking of a wild horse tossing us around. My teeth were clapping so hard from the impact that I tried to clinch them to prevent this from happening. In this dream I knew I was experiencing a massive earthquake. The sounds were so catastrophic that the thought crossed my mind that the devastation could likely exceed Hurricane Katrina of 2005. I did not see the devastation behind me; I only heard it. In all of my life I have never heard such catastrophic sounds. These were the scariest sounds I have ever heard. The dream then shifted once more and concluded with two names on what appeared to be an old Spanish map. One name read Indianola and the other Europa. When I awoke, I was shaking as if I had chills and fever. I could not stop trembling. All through the day I felt as if I had just had the dream 10 minutes ago.
This dream so shook me that my wife and I immediately went to the internet to do some research. I also contacted some close friends in the ministry and reliable intercessors concerning this dream. What we found was startling. There are towns called Indianola, IL, Europa, MO, and Indianola, MS. These towns run in a line from North to South with Europa, MO being near the middle of them. The Mississippi River runs between them with Europa, MO being by the epicenter of the New Madrid fault. After seeing this, I believe the dream could be concerning a devastating earthquake on the New Madrid fault. Many reputable friends in ministry have felt that this dream was not to be interpreted as a spiritual dream because they felt that it has literal implications. Even now, two days later the intensity of this dream is the same.
I do not want to come across as an alarmist concerning what I saw. I also don’t want to put fear in the public or the Body of Christ. However, I cannot help but feel that God gave me this as warning to prepare us for the days ahead and to pray concerning this matter. Thinking about going to Prescott, Az. Like the outdoors and like to shoot. Like dry air and mild temps. Anybody been there? I passed through once a long time ago om my way to Phoenix (too hot).
I have… nice place; but personally, I can’t take overly dry air.. makes my nose bleed.. 🙁 . If you have an unlimited choice of locations ( IE not dependent on job, willingness of family etc ) check out the area around San Marcos / New Braunfels Texas and Broken Bow Oklahoma.. lots of water, huge trees, game and hills.. dry air, but not life-sucking dry.

it’s always good to be prepared but it’s also good not to scare one’s self with what “could” happen. I “could” get into a car and die in an accident any day. Matter of fact the number one killer of youth are car accidents.

My father passwed awy last week after a long illness. I assumed he had insurance. He does not. His will is out dated and his wife is accually in a state of shock. She had convinced herself he would somehow get better. She will now have to sell her home cause she can’t afford it though she has a goodf paying job.

We have preps, but many do not have insurance (life, auto, etc), a will and living will, power of attorney assignment, etc. I think a good rule to follow is to have 6 months (or more) of bill paying money in place after the insurance and will is taken care of. That’s just my thing, but others may do it differently.
Who can afford insurance? Every one goes on and on about medical insurance…..hasn’t any one noticed how ridiculous car insurance has gotten, and if you have a not so good credit rating,(which shouldn’t have a damn thing to do with it) you really get raped!

The U.S. is still very lucky and blessed when it comes to natural disasters. There hasn’t been any major quakes, tsunami’s or direct hits from X-class solar flares.
