Last month Alt-Market.com founder Brandon Smith warned that Bitcoin may not be all that it’s cracked up to be in terms of its purported anonymity:
For years, one of the major original selling points of bitcoin was that it was “anonymous.” It always surprised me that so many people in the liberty movement bought into this scam. Surely after the revelations exposed by Edward Snowden and organizations like Wikileaks, it is utterly foolish to believe that anything in the digital world is truly “anonymous.” The feds have been proving there is no anonymity, even in bitcoin, for some time, as multiple arrests using bitcoin tracking have indeed occurred when the FBI decided it was in their interest. Meaning, when the feds want to track bitcoin transactions, they can, and it does not matter how well the people involved covered their actions.
Because every transaction exists on a public blockchain ledger, an enterprising organization – say like the NSA or IRS – could conceivably implement blockchain analysis tools to track down Bitcoin fund transfers around the globe. These days most bitcoin transactions are originated on “trusted” exchanges that exist in Western nations, where governments have always found new and innovative ways to ensure citizens have no privacy whatsoever, especially when it comes to personal finances. This means that there is more than likely a record of your original Bitcoin transaction, perhaps involving a credit card or bank transfer, and if regulators ask an exchange to turn over the information you can bet they’ll do so in order to avoid unwanted government scrutiny. Moreover, most exchanges now require a driver’s license, passport and even a phone number in order to approve your account for trading.
The point is, for government investigators with a bone to pick, your crypto currency activities online may not be as anonymous and private as you may think.
In fact, so exposed is the blockchain to Big Brother monitoring and interference, that the Internal Revenue Service has now implemented blockchain analysis tools to help them track down individuals who are profiting off the crypto currency and not declaring these profits on their tax returns.

According to a contract recently obtained by the Daily Beast, the IRS can now track bitcoin and other cryptocurrency addresses. They can do this to route out potential tax evaders. They purchased software from the blockchain analysis group Chainalysis.
The document details that “criminals” have used digital currencies to launder money, deal drugs, and commit other unlawful behavior. However, criminals have also been using digital currencies to ignore tax liabilities and evade responsibility. The Daily Beast article elaborated:
The document highlights how law enforcement isn’t only concerned with criminals accumulating bitcoin from selling drugs or hacking targets, but also those who use the currency to hide wealth or avoid paying taxes.
Reason for IRS Crackdown; Tracking Bitcoiners
The reason the IRS is cracking down on digital currencies appears to be because only 802 people declared bitcoin profits or losses in 2015. The Daily Beast article suggests that many people may have not expected the IRS to collect on digital currencies. Others may have just thought they could easily sidestep this alleged obligation.
As a result of this failure to pay taxes, the IRS consulted with Chainalysis. They are now providing the IRS with tools to track bitcoin addresses through the blockchain and centralized exchanges. A Fortune article captured a screen shot of the letter:
The tool that Chainaylsis gave the IRS is called a refactor tool. It visualizes, tracks, and analysis transactions on the blockchain. Agencies from law enforcement, IRS, and banks will be able to use the tool, according to sources. To date, records show the IRS has paid Chainaylsis $88,700 since 2015 for its services.

The recently declassified Watchlisting Guidance rule book issued in 2013 and developed by members of 19 law enforcement agencies that include the FBI, NSA, CIA, and NSA, outlines the rules for placing individuals, including American citizens, on the various watch lists currently in use. As noted by The Intercept, the rules, much like America’s secretive anti-terrorism laws, are vague and often contradict each other.
It reveals a confounding and convoluted system filled with exceptions to its own rules, and it relies on the elastic concept of “reasonable suspicion” as a standard for determining whether someone is a possible threat.

“Instead of a watchlist limited to actual, known terrorists, the government has built a vast system based on the unproven and flawed premise that it can predict if a person will commit a terrorist act in the future,” says Hina Shamsi, the head of the ACLU’s National Security Project. “On that dangerous theory, the government is secretly blacklisting people as suspected terrorists and giving them the impossible task of proving themselves innocent of a threat they haven’t carried out.”
The guidelines for who is or is not a terrorist are now so vague that any American could potentially be added to a list for something as menial as knowing someone who has committed an activity deemed to be of terrorist nature. And as has been highlighted previously, those activities could range from making a hand gesture that looks like a gun or manufacturing your own gold and silver coins.
And now, of course, trading or owning Bitcoin.

Technology is now rapidly being deployed to track every piece of paper money (FRN) from the moment it enters circulation until it is retired.
Scanners have been (or will soon be) installed in every bank, retail store, and office to monitor, record, and transmit the denominations and serial numbers of every FRN as it changes hands. This is not conjecture; just ask your local bank manager.
The government (and many corporations) are eager to assemble files on every dollar spent by every citizen. Cash is still anonymous if you get rid of it, trade it into gold and silver, then back into cash. Even asking a store to change a twenty-dollar-bill ends the trace.
Now, your drivers’ license, with that passive array chip, they have you there. Same thing with a passport. Wrapping both in lead-lined foil, or carrying them around in insulated packs is supposed to work. But who knows for sure.
When the time comes, the grid will break down. Bitcoin and all these cryptocurrencies will disappear. Gold, silver, platinum, and cash (for a while) will remain.
How much cash can you accumulate by trading it into PMs and then back out again? How will you manage this without a paper trail, or digital trail? –and remember, you will be taking a small loss on every transaction.
Likewise, how much money do you think you can accumulate by asking stores to change bills? For any meaningful amount, it will take forever — and you’ll attract unwanted attention if you attempt to do this on a large scale, or do it with many transactions over time; it will be regarded as suspicious.
Furthermore, even if you DO manage to break the trail of whatever cash you accumulate, what will you do with it? Sure, you might be able to buy something out of the back of a truck on a deserted dirt road… but as soon as you (or the guy with whom you make a private deal) spend any of that money in a store, it will be linked with that person’s name… and possibly “red-flagged” as cash that has a broken trail.
Also, the rapid advancement and spread of identification technology will eliminate the effectiveness of a simple shuffle such as you describe. Think about the cameras that take your photo every time you pass through a turnpike toll booth — I suspect it won’t be long until your photo is taken every time you offer/receive cash everyplace — not just banks, but EVERY place from the local convenience store right down to the vending machines at work. That photo will be scanned for biometrics, and your identity will be linked to the serial numbers of the cash that you have used.
Some folks might think this sounds too much like science fiction; but the actual technology to do all of these things exists right now. All it takes is for the systems to be built into new devices as they are being manufactured, and for the networking to be set up. When you consider the phenomenal amount of insight that can be gained from spying on every single financial transaction that can be gained by monitoring all citizens from the cradle to the grave, I have little doubt that such systems will appear. Probably sooner than we all think.
On top of all this, it’s probably safe to say that laws against “money laundering” will probably become expanded and more severe in the future. While originally intended for large-scale criminal enterprises, they will also become a handy way to scare ordinary people into staying within the system. Once people read a few stories about how Fred the plumber was sentenced to 18 months in jail for buying a few hundred dollars worth of supplies with “laundered money”, very few will want to risk using cash with a broken trail.
Even now, people are being conditioned to believe that a desire for privacy automatically indicates that a person is doing something wrong. How many people under 25 care about privacy issues? Virtually none: they are all immersed in a digital world that provides instant gratification for constant “connectivity”. As older folks die off, there will eventually be nobody left who remembers what it was like to live in a world with privacy; and thus, nobody who cares about it.
The ‘surveillance society’ is not standing still. It continues to expand. Look at all of the surveillance that we are subject to — fifty years ago, people would have been shocked by it. Now, 99% of the population don’t seem to even care.
Imagine how bad it will be in the future — and it won’t take fifty years, either. Within another ten or fifteen, I doubt if anyone in the USA will be able to buy so much as a candy bar without the purchase being recorded into his “consumer profile”.
Surveillance systems already track all of our communications, and most of our movements. Once total financial surveillance is in place, the last vestiges of privacy will be gone.
My local bank already uses a device that looks a lot like the “JetScan iFX® i200 currency counter and scanner”. Probably your bank does, too.
Soon, scanners will be built into every cash register, and every currency note that goes in (or out) will be linked to an individual and his purchase.

The creator of Bitcoin built into the software a maximum size the Bitcoin system could handle. Only so much Bitcoin money can be created. The system will then only allow Bitcoin trade of existing Bitcoin.
This is much like the problem shoukd the world wanted a currency based on gold, there is in fact a set amount of gold in existence and only a specific amount produced annually by gold mines.
The amount of US Dollars in circulation is vastly larger than all the gold in the world. There just isn’t enough to support a global system of trade.

Because bitcoin is Pseudonymous, there have been other crypto coins created that are supposed to be 100% anonymous… as in the block chain doesn’t record *who* sent what. And some with built in “mixers” to disguise who sent what where… but even that can eventually be broken.
And FYI: It’s not possible “track down individuals who are profiting off the crypto currency” because the block chain doesn’t say why the coins moved from one address to another. This is a misunderstanding by the author of this article. It’s actually referring to people who are getting paid in bitcoin (like cash under the table.)

Bit coin can be bought with credit cards which is easily tracked . The IRS may have come across a way to reduce the 20 trillion dollar U.S. debt by the legal capital gains tax on Bit coin transactions. Those who don’t pay the tax, will end up broke and in jail. We must remember the only constant in life is death and taxes. Some have made fortunes with this new currency so pay the tax like everybody else does. Never underestimate the government’s forensic computational ability. The Utah NSA internet storage facility is just an example. I have said, that unless I am mistaken, that they can track your ISP site. This is the equivalent of using a ballistic locating device to find the source of the sniper (hidden secret shooter, or in this case, crypto user).

Yes, they can find out the address that purchased something. At no time have they ever been able to associate a name with that address. THAT is the beauty of the CCs! While they can track what an address does, nobody has any idea who that address belongs to unless you tell them.
