Volcanic Activity And Earthquakes In The Ring Of Fire Spark Fears Of ‘The BIG ONE’

The Ring of Fire appears to be awakening in the past few weeks.  As deaths, injuries, and evacuations occur around the volatile area, new fears have arisen that the “big one” could occur any day now.

Many have warned that the Ring of Fire’s activity could produce a large enough earthquake to completely destroy the entire California coast. So far, nothing of the sort has happened, but new and violent volcanic activity is forcing the fear back to the forefront of people’s minds.

According to The Sun, scientists are now sounding the alarm as well.  Scientists have warned that the frequent seismic activity, which has already claimed lives, could mean a huge quake is on the way.  A new study out of California says that the cluster of tremors around the planet’s so-called Ring of Fire (the horseshoe-shaped geological disaster zone) could indicate the “big one” is due to hit, TheDaily Mail Online reports.

The research, published in the journal Science Advances, involved analysis of 101 major earthquakes around the Pacific Ring of Fire between 1990 and 2016. Thorne Lay, a professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UC Santa Cruz, said, “Based on the clustering of earthquakes in space and time, the area that has just slipped is actually more likely to have another failure.” He added that despite the stress on the fault being lowered to below failure level, “the surrounding areas have been pushed towards failure in many cases, giving rise to aftershocks and the possibility of an adjacent large rupture sooner rather than later.”

“Taiwan, Guam, and Japan are far apart relative to the static stress interactions, but one could examine the seismic shaking from an earlier event in the region of a later event to see if small earthquakes were triggered as the seismic waves went by which could have led to a cascade of failures culminating in a larger event,” said Lay.  “Until that type of analysis is done, causal connection between the events is very speculative. Earthquakes are happening frequently in the Ring of Fire, and some apparent space-time clustering could arise from purely random (non-interacting) activity.”

More than 180 people were injured and 17 people killed when a 6.4 magnitude quake struck Taiwan’s east coast on February 6.

On Tuesday a series of tremors reaching magnitudes as high as 5.7 shook the US island territory of Guam.

Since February 11, three earthquakes have hit Japan, the largest measured at 4.8 on the Richter scale and was 103 kilometers from Hachijo.

But scientists have reassured the public, saying such activity is normal for the Ring of Fire and dismissed speculation of a “domino effect” triggering a bigger quake. The Sun

While some scientists look to discover the possibility of an unexpected “big one,” many others are urging the public to remain calm and not be concerned.

Toshiyasu Nagao, head of Tokyo-based Tokai UNiversity’s Earthquake Prediction Research Centre, told Japan Times, “The Pacific Rim is in a period of activity. In terms of volcanic history, however, the current activity is still regarded as normal.”

      1. Ok….enough with the doom. I’m more worried about the little robot aliens in my attic. They have these rayguns that hurt like hellfire. Wait….crap, God’s ringing the doorbell and freakin’ out! Gotta go.

      2. Forget the scientific mumbo-jumbo! My neighbor told me that her corns hurt! That always means a major earthquake or volcanic eruption will occur soon. Either that or she has new shoes on that are too small. Still, it beats most “scientific” forecasts!

        • I’m waiting for a rabid werewolf to eat the Easter bunny personally. That’ll be the end of the world for sure. Hell, and I voted for the Sweet Meteor of Death to win the POTUS job. Damn. Wasted another vote.

      3. One can hope!

      4. Everybody relax. God just left and after a couple of beers, he laughed and said it was just a joke. He’s a funny dude when he lightens up. He took the little robot alien dudes and shoved them into Pandoras box ( actually, it was a bottle…who would’ve thunk) and I’m rid of those pesky butt snipers.
Anyways, he assured me that his wrath won’t be broadcast on the news, as that wouldn’t be as much fun as springing it on the lazy immoral “dickweeds”! Yes, that is his word!!! Told you he was a funny dude!!

        Back to sleep, all.

      5. “The Pacific Rim is in a period of activity. In terms of volcanic history, however, the current activity is still regarded as normal.”

I think that is an important point.

        • And also regarded as insignificant, most of these eruptions are short in duration, nothing like Krakatoa

          • Nail,
Mt. St Helen’s sure got my attention!
            When I was there.
You and I are not in the ring of fire,
but you and I both live on “active”
            volcanoes.
I find posts about volcanoes, a little
“off” when they are the norm.
My home insurance covers volcanism, but not hurricanes,
            flooding, tornadoes, and earthquakes,
although we are exposed to all of those.
That tells me a lot about the threats.

      6. There is reason for concern in southern mexico.

Very strong and shallow M7.2 earthquake hits Oaxaca, Mexico. In August 2017 just before or after Hurricane Katin made landfall from the Gulf Of Mexico, an 8.1 on the Pacific side near Guatemala off shore.

Giant earth cracks split in half Jáltipan, Mexico after M8.1 earthquake and tropical storm Katia hit Veracruz,Mexico. This is on the Atlantic side.

Very strong and shallow M7.2 earthquake hits Oaxaca, Mexico – 02.16.18.

Live in a world of change.

We should be prepared to see unexpected land deformation from massive earth quakes and a sudden lost of life.

      7. I don’t know of any studies about the impact, beyond the geographic area directly effected. If California literally had its coast to 20 miles inland destroyed it could be sufficient to kick out the fragile pillars of the world economy. The drain and cost on US medical care, loss of energy production and environmental catastrophe just for a start.

        • Drain on medical care and the loss of energy production? Are you kidding me? WHAT energy production in commiefornia?? They constantly have rolling blackouts during the summers. Texas doesn’t. And its MUCH hotter in Texas than there. They provide little to nothing to the rest of the country. If anything, commiefornia is a drain on the rest of the US as a whole.

      8. Too bad for California

      9. Nothing we can do to prevent them.

        • You didn’t see the story that NASA was developing a plan to stop Yellowstone from erupting?

see multiple stories about it with this google search:
          stop yellowstone from erupting

The story I read back in August:
          ht tp://www.news.com.au/technology/science/nasa-study-proposes-way-to-prevent-yellowstone-super-volcano-from-destroying-united-states/news-story/68fb6ff011365c7d935141cfd72961f4

      10. While everyone is watching yellowstone and the ring of fire, do no ignore the earthquakes and volcanic action that are occurring in the Canary Islands CUMBRE VIEJAy, slide into the ocean would send a large tower of water to the East Coast.

Steve Quayle posted a hard to read comment (all in caps)in his alert section but makes sense.

Also, Dutchsinse who is on twitter, you tube seems to do accurate reporting; Has to be, the powers to be seems to want to hinder his EQ reporting.

Not just the Ring of Fire , but the hold world is ringing like a bell as Steve Quayle article stated and he is right and if you had a thought to back off prepping, rotating stocks or so, would not. As a matter of fact, worst time to stop.

Seems the hold whole is in turmoil in all areas. Looks like Greece and Turkey may go to War.
