Earlier this year President Obama detailed his new educational initiatives aimed at “closing America’s school readiness gap.” As with all things Obama, it seems that “readiness” is yet another doublespeak term that suggests exactly the opposite of the traditional definition.
At a recent school meeting in Grayslake, Illinois curriculum director Amanda August discusses the new federally mandated Common Core education standards, which are currently being implemented into school districts across the nation.

But even under the new Common Core… even if they said 3 X 4 was 11, if they were able to explain their reasoning and explain how they came up with their answer, really in words and in oral explanations, and they showed it in a picture but they just got the final number wrong, we’re really more focusing on the how and why.
It’s no matter if a student comes to the conclusion that 3 x 4 = 11. So long as they can explain how they made this erroneous determination they go home with an ‘A’.

Is it any wonder that, as Michael Snyder notes, our high school students are as dumb as rock, failing to answer the most basic of questions? A study conducted by none other than Common Core shows just how far we’ve fallen at America’s pedagogic institutions:
- Only 60% of students knew that WWI was fought between 1900 and 1950 — they only had to guess the half century!
- One in four high schoolers think Columbus discovered the New World after 1750
- On the multiple choice test, less than half of high schoolers knew when the Civil War was fought. They didn’t even need to know exact dates, just that it was sometime between 1850 and 1900.
- 40% of students could not identify the name of the ocean on the eastern side of the United States.
- Nearly 60% of students could not identify the two major political parties.
- When asked who is in charge of the Executive Branch of the United States, 70% of high school students got the wrong answer.
- Fully 75% of high school students failed to identify the First President of the United States

Critics of Common Core say it “dumbs down” education by replacing traditional English literature with “informational texts”. So students will read such inspiring materials as studies by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the EPA’s “Recommended Levels of Insulation,” and “Invasive Plant Inventory” by California’s Invasive Plant Council. It is doubtful that reading federal reports will teach students the habits of critical thinking and skepticism of government that the Founders considered essential to maintaining a free republic.
American exceptionalism is being dumbed-down from cradle to grave on every level.
It should be obvious that the long-term plan is not to improve the lives of Americans, but rather, to create a slave-based society through (mis)education, consumerism, and government dependence.

The real problem is that if you eliminated all federal spending, including the military, and only kept entitlements, the government would still spend more than it takes in. BI’s simple math is right on.

If you look at its actual presentation the bill is introduced in seconds with no debate. The second reading of this bill is scheduled in September and then it can be voted on by the House of Commons.

The real problem is federal spending? The real problem is we have allowed our elected representatives to stray from the strict confines of the Constitution. The president thinks he is a king, the Congress is ignorant of their oath and the Supreme Court has become a laughing stock. The framework is there to fix the problem but the will of the people is lacking.

What was there to vote for? Expecting a constitutional amendment to tame this beast that is the US federal government is naive at best. The people in DC DO NOT CARE about the constitution or any of the amendments in it, except the 16th. Every person that takes office is sworn to protect it, yet as soon as they get in office they proceed to use the constitution as toilet paper.

Aside from the fact that 30,000,000 plus 12,000,000 is 42,000,000 and even assuming that every single one of them were registered and voted for Obama (even though we know that isn’t true)the total number of votes cast in the 2012 election was 126,831,812. I’m sorry, but 42,000,000 does not equal 51% of 126,831,812… it more in the ballpark of 33%. So again even if we go along with the foolish notion that 42,000,000 foodstamp recipients were all not only adult but also registered voters and furthermore we assume they did in fact ALL vote for Obama (all 42M…… not likely) he still managed to pull enough respectable non-leaches to get another roughly 20% of the popular vote.

While “home schooling” is an individual option, it is not a viable alternative to a good public school education for everyone. Vouchers are a bad idea because then taxpayers pay for educating ILLEGALS in the Catholic Schools.
Unfortunately the Left has been in charge of the public school system for 40 years, and the schools, like the cities themselves, are inhabited by marginal men and women of dubious moral quality: as they are teaching homosexuality to 4th graders in Toronto.

Braveheart: If you think kids in the inner city are dumber than a mud fence now, imagine if they were educated at home by their parents.
Their parents are the problem in most cases and it is passed down from generation to generation. Exposure to some civilization is necessary to allow a few kids who are open to the light to follow the light. That is why public schools are necessary.
Not all of these kids make it but a few do. That wouldn’t be possible if they were home schooled. That’s why I say that home schooling is not a viable option for everyone.
We must find an effective way to reach these kids or our society will forever be burdened by them; not to mention the tragedy of a uneducated human soul struggling for a basic understanding of life. (I example Clark and Yo Mama here as they may be the same person anyway.) In most cases these kids just don’t know better because no one has taught the better. Again my examples 🙂

In the 60s, some minority neighborhoods created “freedom schools” to teach their children when they felt their children were being ignored by public schools. The idea could still work. Families working together in small groups to educate their children.
Sadly, there may not be much difference for many of the inner city kids between education by illiterate parents and what they manage to learn before dropping out of school.
It can be but you have to make sacrifices…. my wife and I did for all of our kids… and it is paying off bigtime.
I know this is very pessimistic but very few people know the sounds of their local civil defense sirens when Russia and/or China launches an attack on the U.S. The siren that is non changing in tone is an indication of a likely weather event or something else local. A siren that changes its pitch and goes up and down means the missiles are coming in or some other massive attack is underway and it is time to get to safety immediately. In order to get an “A” for 3 x 4 = 11 the student has to explain and prove their reasoning. It’s really NOT as easy as saying it to make it so.
Years ago (more than I’d like to admit) I was in a math class where, as an intellectual exercise, the lecturer proved that 0.999… = 1. It took him two blackboards of calculations to do it. The impressive part of the feat was that he had proven something that all of us had assumed was untrue and that it took a great deal of intellectual rigor to do it. We all realized that if we wanted to ‘get away’ with false assertions, it would take more work than just giving the correct answer in the first place. I, for one, would pay money to see someone prove to me that 3X4=11.
BTW, I think the formula is supposed to read: 3x – 4 = 11
in that case, the answer is: x=3. Work it out and see.

I am not a huge fan of the common core; however, there are some good things that come with it. I’ve seen samples of how the students will be tested, and quite frankly it is a test where kids finally have to think. This means educators have to restructure their classes to engage students in activities where they have to really learn. TEachers are really going to have to start teaching and facilitating great learning opportunities. Not just have kids answer the questions at the end of the chapter. Sure, the 3×4=11 is ridiculous, but having kids explain, reason and apply are critical skills in life. They just can’t pick “c” anymore…they have to actually think. Is it perfect? No, but it is better than the tests we have currently. There is no “one size fits all” in education and this style of test can better fit the diversity of the kids. How do I know all of this? I’m a public school teacher and I love my job and helping the kids find their individual success!

i was also told that it only teaches “world” and “human” history with American history only taught as a side note and briefly with a heavy emphasis on how America was founded unjustly on the backs of slavery and the poor .

kynase, glad you are pleased with the curriculum. I taught a new math curriculum based on Common Core standards for one year. I had successfully taught math for many years prior. The new curriculum was 100% inquiry based math, meant to improve critical thinking skills. As the column above indicates, there were many times when a math problem had no right or wrong answer.
My view was that pure inquiry based math is no better than pure drill and kill memorization of facts. Some of my kids had very poor computation skills. I was told that I absolutely could not do any work on improving those gaps in learning, rather that I should be sophisticated enough to “trust the curriculum”. Those morons I worked for told me that the students would teach themselves basic math skills by doing the inquiry exercises in their math books. I was told I should grow beyond the outdated concept of a teacher centered classroom, and embrace student centered learning. I was told that if I used any material in the classroom that did not come from the curriculum that administrators would come into my room and confiscate it. When I realized that most students would leave my room at the end of the year no better than they entered it, I decided my conscience would not allow me to sign another teaching contract.
We were required to attend many hours of training intended to convince us of the wisdom of this new approach. We were told that in an age of calculators and computer based problem solving students no longer needed to know basic computation skills. (This was coming from the same people who told me the curriculum was so well thought out that students would learn basic skills from immersing themselves in it.) We had to read academic research papers meant to support this method, and write “reflections” on what they contained. Ironically, many of the papers found that developing higher level problem solving skills was meaningless if students lacked the ability to identify and apply the proper computation skills to complete the task. In other words, what they were advocating was not supported by the research they used to support its validity.
Most math teachers did not fully support Common Core math, but they had bills to pay and a retirement to secure.
As a side note, the math professor who was recruited to help develop the Common Core math curriculum refused to sign off on the final result, as he felt it would fail to provide students with the foundation necessary to be successful in the sciences at a university level.

My youngest (who was told she had a learning disability by the public school goons), this year challenged here English class in college and aced the test and got the credits. Well, in California and other states, they’ve already had a warm up for this for a number of years. The “Everyday Math” problem, developed in the University of Chicago (big surprise there) has been adopted by many school districts. It is along these same lines. Explain it away and you are right. There is no right and wrong. One assignment for the younger ages was to walk around the house and find numbers and write down what you found the numbers on. Genius work! My kids never had number lines or multiplication tables in school – sad state of affairs and is only getting worse.

I am already considering letting my two high schoolers drop out. And coming from a family of teachers that is the worst blasphemy. My mother was already forced into retirement, due to health reasons. Turns out the system is forcing lots of teachers into retirement, to make it easier to get sheeple teachers that won’t fight for teaching the constitution, bill of rights, and be passionate for standing up for honesy and integrity.
Have mom home school your kids and have them learn a Trade (welding, accounting, pipe fitting, mechanics, IT, ect. while they home school. Worked for my kids.

I think I have it figured out how 3×4=11 in the terms of the way the government distorts the figures on everything. It is actually 3 x 3.667 = 11, but the 3.667 is rounded up to 4. The government just doesn’t tell you that 3 and 2/3 is rounded up. You know how the government warps the budget numbers to make it fit like jamming a square peg into a triangle shaped opening. With mr. government everything is NEVER as it appears.
It is the same reason that the our National debt has stayed exactly the same for 80+ days. My debt has never stayed the same for 15 minutes much the less one day.

The saddest thing is how those kids laugh and think it’s trivial. One kid in that video a asian guy gave the best and most truthful answer out of any of them. He said he was not taught that knoknowledge. School needs to be year round. We’d have kids that can rival or exceed there foreign equivalents then. The traditional portion of the year should be spent on, reading, writing and, math. The so called summer break portion should emphasize on, geography, science and, social studies consisting of, U.S. Government, U.S. History and U.S. Law. If i could call the shots things would be conducted along these lines.

There is a reason that this country is so far behind in educating its children. First AND foremost, it is the parenting. Today’s parents are content to put their child in front of a TV or Xbox than even reading to them at night. When it comes to schooling, I would say half of the parents with struggling children, don’t even take the time to help them with their homework. Now on to the school systems, todays schools despite the Bush-era “No child left behind” are more focused pushing them through the grades than actually teaching. Inner city schools are underfunded, and generally the teachers are afraid of their own students. (See back to the beginning) but the children in school have ZERO respect for any teacher or authority figure to even care what is coming out of their mouths. And we haven’t even gotten to curriculum yet! Other than math, which is universal, everything else has been tainted. Writing, (You are NOT allowed to express free thought anymore). The arts they are usually the first program to go in an underfunded school. History, the revisionists have been changing the way history has been taught and perceived for years! It goes on and on, but the front line is a home. In my opinion it is up to all of us who have children to educate them the best way that we can. Stimulate their imaginations, show them there is more to the world than what they see on TV! Teach them to think for themselves and to question as much as they can!

US Dept. of Education didn’t come along until the Carter era after I graduated. in the 60s, the schools actually focused on education and nothing else. We actually had to think and work to get our school work 100% correct. If you answered any questions wrong on a test, you were given a failing grade. there were much higher standards back in those days. My, my; how times have changed. this is how far we have fallen in the half-century since I was in school. Public school kids of today don’t stand a chance out here in the real world. It’s one of the biggest crimes TPTB have committed against our nation what they’ve done to the generations that have come up since my time. braveheart

In 08-09, there was a TV commercial everywhere. I don’t remember what it was for, only a phrase that has haunted & upset me to this very day. The phrase was “we’re a nation of consumers, and you know, that’s OK”. It was a very insidious ad, I know I’m not making it clear. Its just that those words keep coming back to me more & more. To me, they started in earnest to subvert our national character at this point. Also, I think that the very young children could be a very real enemy to people like us when they come of age. Last year, I looked at my neighbors childrens school books, that were 9, 12 & 16. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. I tried to point out a few things to the father, fucking useless. Where are we going to be in 10-15 years? Dark times ahead.

In 1970s, my woman and me would cruise the town with my F250 with the 460. But we couldn’t cruise too far because I had a 460 which got 4 miles to the gallon. We had to park and watch the other couples cruise. But we did do some great kissing!
My F250 still runs today and I drive it to work sometimes. I have the original 8-track along with the tapes of Elvis, Led, Stones, Beatles, Johnny, and The Letterman (I got the Letterman for XMas from my Aunt, not my fault).
My truck looks good, and nobody touches it. I have original bumper sticker when I passed people in my F250 with the 460 that said ‘Eat Shit Bitch and Drool’….
My education got me a job and my F250 with the 460. I got what a man needs. What else is there in Life?

Ugly, when I was 16 and got my first real job, I took $300 in savings, what I made some odd jobs previously, and bought a 1964 Chevy II Nova 2-door post coupe with straight 6 engine and 3-speed on the column. I could run a week and a half on a tank of gas in that car. I had my first girl in that car. 3 months before I graduated I was hit in the rear by a U-Haul truck. the gas tank ruptured and I just barely escaped from the car. Wish I had one of those now, fully restored. Those “3 on the trees” were great. You couldn’t miss the gears in one of those. These kids of today can’t even drive an automatic, never mind what I had. braveheart
PS, I drove that Chevy II from Memphis to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras and got 25 MPG on the highway. back in the 70s that was good gas mileage for any car. braveheart
I learned how to drive in an old Dodge weapons carrier at 7 yrs old then graduated to my pops bronco, now that was a good set of wheels, he beat the crap out of that thing, many good memories riding in the back seat holding a 30 carbine and 30-30 with the police chief in the passenger seat and pop driving chasing down poachers, ah the good old days, i miss my dad, shure the lord is takin care of him though!
@Braveheart.. Great piece of nostalgia to throw in. A first car was an education in and of itself. Those were the days you worked hard all summer to buy a $100 car, one you learned to fix yourself, with junkyard parts or whatever. Ours was a “hands on” generation where we had shop in school, and our Dads taught us to hunt, fish, camp, fix stuff around the house and so forth.
Both my grandparents taught in one room school houses, and fact is, kids were taught everything from the Bible to classic Greek and Roman history, not to mention real, practical math. Lessons. In morality were common fare.
Very sad indeed to see what has happened to our country in the 63 years I have been alive. Tragic. Jefferson once said we need not fear err of opinion so long as reason and logic are free to combat it. He understood that the survival of our Republic depended on a moral and educated public.
My only hope now is that after the Big Crash, or Big Reset, or whatever, perhaps on a local community level we will go back to those one room school house days and once again teach the upcoming generation as their great grandparents were taught.
I am disgusted that my fellow ” boomers” succumbed to the “if it feels good, do it” credo of the 1960s. Not all of us did. In fact, I think most of us didn’t. But then again we were the quiet ones and just went about our business trying to raise families and make an honest living. Never got into drugs, and most people I know didn’t either. In fact, I don’t even drink – I guess the original “square”. Going to church and having two decent parents will kind of mess that boomer thing up for you.

After graduating from high school in 1979, two high school pals and I took a trip out west from our home town in the suburbs of Michigan. We chipped in and bought a 1974 Plymoth Fury Grand 4 door with the good ole 318 in her. That car only cost us $150.00. We put in another $50.00 for plugs, hoses, wires oil change, radiator flush en thermostat. We drove that car from Detroit to Seattle, WA down to LA then back to Michigan. All we did was put gas in her without one break down. My friend still has that car out in his back yard. We all end up back at his place once a year and fire that ole Fury up and listen to her run then drive her down the block for a six pack and sit on her hood rethinking about our trip we took together 30 years ago.

NC legislature in April passed a bill requiring the memorization of multiplication tables and teaching of cursive handwriting.
Common Core doesn’t require either. It would allow a generation of people who wouldn’t be able to read any old documents or letters or be able to calculate on paper.
Kids in my area are taught weird ways of multiplying and dividing in 5th grade. When they get to 6th grade at the middle school, those ways are not accepted. They have to learn to multiply and divide all over again.
All the schools in my area put out lists before school starts requiring the students to have loads of supplies, such as notebooks, dry erase markers, pencil sharpeners, etc. When I was in school, all I had to supply was paper, pencils, and a notebook to hold it all. The school had a pencil sharpener hung on the wall of every room and chalk in all the chalkboard trays. And horror of horrors, there was no air conditioning, so on some days we had to open all the windows and make paper fans.
I wouldn’t teach in a public school now for any amount of money. Every teacher I know is retiring the first minute they’re eligible, except for the ones who quit altogether and teach for lower pay in private schools.

I was home-schooled from 8th grade on,and believe me it was much better to learn that way. I had no teachers screaming in the room,no punk kids giving me trouble,better food variety,the list could go on. And I turned out a very down to earth person. I know if I stayed in public school (AKA – Slave training) I would have no idea about the horrible situation our countries in.
this actually does not bother me. we have spreadsheets nowadays to take care of the actual calculations, so long as we know what calculation is appropriate for the situation.
in my view, it is much more important to know which mathematical technique to apply than to know how to perform the technique. let the machine perform the technique.

Nothing about this surprises me at all. It has been in the news for years, the U.S.’s school system is a big failure system and California is the leading state for school failure. In Califorina, parents sued the gov’t, so their children could get a high school diploma.

I am 32, I graduated from high school in 1999. The overwhelming stupidity of people my age and younger amazes me. Well people older then me too, for crying out loud read a book!!! I know I am not the smartest person but I am fairly intelligent and have self taught knowledge. I went to high school with people who could not read or add and subtract. They did not graduate but kept getting promoted to the next grade until 19 then were kicked out. How crazy is that? I make sure to educate my children, not just public school.
I was in the public school system and saw first hand–it’s always about the numbers.
Put all kids they can get into special classes–whether they ‘truly’ need those classes or not…more funds.
I had a third grader that couldn’t pronounce her r’s like we do here–in England, she would have fit in perfectly.
She missed my social studies class due to this ‘special’ need to pronounce those damned r’s.
I also had children not prepared for 4th grade…oh, hell no.
The govt. school system ONLY funds for 18 years. Any repeats hurts those ‘NUMBERS’. Send them on!!!

I once had a Principal tell me to stop teaching about the WWII Death Camps because he can’t find any “real truth” that they ever existed; and the gas chambers and ovens were just a made up story to put fear into the people.

More BS! If you do NOT get the correct answer, then you do NOT understand the concept. Nature as described by math, is unforgiving of human stupidity. Get the math wrong with medications, means that you just might have one very dead patient. Getting the math wrong means that space shuttles blow up in the sky, you airplane falls from the sky, the plumbing will not work, or your house burns down from an electrical fire. I am willing to bet that all these new math teachers are very old fashion when it comes to their pay checks or retirement fund. Then, 3×4=12 is the ONLY correct answer. And they will NOT care about how the other person feels, gets the concept or any thing else when their personal numbers are involved. A calculator lets you get the wrong answer faster (if you don’t know what you are doing).
OK, I just was curious how many kids answered “Urope” as the ‘country’ that starts with the letter “U”.

That second video in the article is spot on. Does any school even follow the 3 R’s anymore? Basic reading, writing and mathematical skills are not taught as stringently as they once were because the daily classroom schedule is filled with other supplemental classes now like: Human Growth and Development, Sex Education, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) which are outside the scope of normal education.
Now it might well be productive to find out how kids got the answer they did–to know where they went wrong and correct it. From what I’ve seen so far, I do not have much confidence in the Common Core. I’ve known teachers from many states and most areas require pretty much the same things: reading, writing, math, English, foreign language American and World History. WE managed to build the greatest nation in human history without the feds being involved. These days we have the internet, so anyone can look up and see what are required courses and in many cases curriculums in various states and cities.
My concern is that it is too focused on “skills” at the high school level—skills they should have mastered BEFORE being allowed into high school. It seems, and I would love to see proof otherwise, that if in an English or History class, one student writes a twenty page term paper and another draws a few stick figures with or without a few words in bubbles coming from their mouths, they will both be said to have “met the standard.” If someone can show that this is not the case, please provide evidence. Thinking skills is a great thing, but to develop thinking skills, they need to have something substantive to think about. My sense of CC is that it is too focused on skills and too low on content—and that this is simply a cover up to pretend that kids who never study, who never read and have IQs in the 80’s are the same as kids who have IQs over a 100 and say they are both “college ready.” Unless they are intellectually disabled, every kid should have to write at least one decent term paper in high school to graduate.
