Report: Nearly One In Five Americans Have No Money to Put Food on the Table

While economists, government officials, and mainstream media experts argue about whether a recovery is finally taking hold, the evidence on the ground provides a clear insight about where the country is headed.

A nationwide Gallup survey involving 177,000 U.S. adults proves what many contrarians have been screaming for some time: For most Americans there is no recovery.

After having lost 40% of their wealth, millions of jobs, their homes, and with prices in all key commodity groups like food and energy rising consistently, our current economic conditions feel more like a depression than anything remotely resembling a recovery.

According to the new survey, nearly one in five Americans report that there has been at least one time in the last 12 months when they did not have enough money to buy the food they or their families needed. In some parts of the country it’s even worse.

In 15 states, at least one in five Americans say they struggled to afford the food they needed at least once during the past 12 months. Nationwide, 18.2% of Americans so far in 2012 say there have been times when they could not afford the food they needed, on par with the 18.6% who had trouble affording food in 2011.

With nutritional food assistance benefits averaging of about $500 for a family in need, the 48.5 million Americans on food stamps and the additional 50 million receiving some other form of government welfare or safety net distribtion may soon find themselves in an even greater struggle.

The culprit? Rising prices everywhere. Essential goods like food and gas are a significant driving factor, especially as more and more Americans lose their jobs or jobless benefits. While the Federal Reserve continues to expand the money supply and population growth in emerging markets puts further demand on global resource availability, the only direction for prices to go is up. Coupled with the worst drought in 50 years things may get even worse for Americans next year.

      1. The real problem is our savings rate. When is the last time you heard someone talk about saving for a rainy day? Instead they rely on social programs. I have not been fully employed since 2008. Yet I’ve been able to not only survive, but prepare for seven years into the future because I saved during the years of plenty.

        • How do you expect some people to save with so many important things comes ahead of savings?

Examples such as “new ink”, iPhone, satellite TV, high speed Internet, the list goes on & on….

          Sarcasm intended

          • Exactly. When I was 26 a friend who still lived in a home that had wheels asked me how I could afford a ‘real house’ on my income. I pointed to the two late model cars in their rented driveway. “I don’t have those” I said.

            • Right on! Been there done that.

            • I was behind someone in the line at our local grocery store and they had the bare essentials on the register belt. After a couple of items they needed a total…making sure they didn’t go over their limit. At the end of the tally they completely emptied her wallet and his pockets. They were scraping up change. She looked at me in embarrassment and said she was sorry….I told her there is nothing to be sorry about.

She ended by saying….God always make a way for us to eat.

People are already in bad financial shape…I truly feel for some. Just think of the despare people will face in the near future. I can not help but feel of some people…they have been out of work so long that they are barely scrapping by.

            • Prepared Pastor: You’ve picked up on what is the key difference between you and many of those on welfare-values. While you worked and saved while others went out and bought plasma tv’s, tricked-out cars, got tatoos, and started wearing lots of bling. Yet none of them will ever own a home or ever have any financial security because like little kids the minute they get any money they spend it on useless crap. It’s all about the disipline and they don’t have it. WTSHTF most of them will demand that the government do something and give them more money, some will go on a rampage, but the bottom line is that none of them have the brains nor the skills to live long without a fix from Uncle Sam the Pusher. Food shortages will make them weak and lack of clean water and poor sanitation will do the rest. It’ll be harsh, it’ll be ugly, but in the end there’ll be some equalibrium restored when most of those useless eaters are gone.

            • ” I pointed to the two late model cars in their rented driveway. “I don’t have those” I said.”

Therein lies the secret. Buy used and save the difference; this goes especially for cars, where you lose a horrendous amount of ‘value’ the second you drive it off the lot. I bought a nice little car that gets better mileage than most brand-new cars, and I paid $7k that I saved up for it. It’s a beautiful thing to not pay interest on an item that depreciates as badly as a car.

There’s also that crap about keeping up with the joneses. the flashy neighbors in my old in-city apartment complex had massive smartphones for each spouse and each kid, with all the latest specs, and a $150-$200 monthly bill to match it. My cell phone? a company-supplied crap-end Blackberry that I am contractually allowed to use for up to 30% of my personal calls. My monthly cost? $0.00

That’s just an example… I’ll shop at garage sales and thrift stores for the things I want before I even think of finally breaking down and buying it new. I prefer drinking the occasional house-brand soda over the national pricey name-brands (Dr. K and Citrus Drop for the win! 🙂 ), but mostly I drink homemade iced tea and fresh water.

My idea of a fancy meal? Freshly-caught fish, crawdads, and foraged salad.

Long story short? Be smart about it, discover the bargain, prioritize your wants and needs, and ignore the hype about what your television demands that you buy.

            • Tina, this is so true. Our local Baptist Association sent out a post card to all of our churches last week telling us the pantry was almost empty. They are asking for any food items to help people now. It is getting pretty bad for a lot of folks.

            • Who OWNS a home in the USA? Property taxes ensure that you RENT from the government.

(Interesting, first post in days and I get a “Slow down. You are posting comments too fast” message.)

            • Once again.

Smart and Final. Chicken thighs. $0.99 a pound. Tap water. Frozen veggies.

              You’ll live.

              I do…

Let me be clear here it’s possible to eat on $160 a month and not even notice it. I’m getting cookies and stuff at that number. If I cut out all the BS we’re talking in the nieghborhood of $100.

          • Yep! It’s” Buy what you want and Beg for what you need”

            • This is SOOOO true! A famiy friend is paying a $200/month cell phone bill, eating out constantly, buying birthday and baby gifts for friends and begging someone to be charitable and give or sell her a cheap vehicle. All the while on unemployment because the $15/hour job offer just wasn’t enough to sustain their family.

          • 9mm, it is called entertainment spending. Values and priority changes have a lot to do with what has happened. Yet, lost jobs and purchasing power have helped many others to be on the dole.
Since the gov’t is distructive towards the average American and family and making many dependant on the gov, I’m surprised the percentage isn’t higher. It probably will be soon.
I’ve been helping the disadvantaged for many years and hope others will step up to the plate to help others also.

          • Wd have clients who come to our office for assistance which we are happy to provide but we get frustrated when they drive far nicer cars than ours or won’t accept the bread on the rack because it is not their brand. A client misses their appoinement and then angrily tells us that WE are starving THEIR kids. They stand in front of us with $40 nails, $4 latte in hand, a pack of smokes visible in their purse and their child has a new McD toy they just got at their lunch out.
Priorities are way out of wack! You pay the rent, utilities and food bills FIRST. Then tithe to God in whatever form you choose because He gave you everything you have and THEN get the other stuff.

            • Tithe first – then food, rent/mortgage, and other essentials THEN everything else

            • @c Yea,I hate to admit it. IT took me until I was almost 50yrs. old to realize that I had to spend my money on NEEDS and not WANTS!! Then my body started to fall apart and being self-employed,it didn’t take long to figure out I had to spent wisely! Spent my money on LOTS & HOUSES!! LOTSA BEER and WHOREHOUSES!! NO JUST KIDDING!!!Stick together Y’aLL!!

            • Sounds like my ex.

              6_9 crazy.

          • This is something that absolutely must put a stake into ANYONE that would condemn prepping and storage of food and supplies for the future. These non-preppers have the idiotic notion that preparing is for some global catastrophe that will never happen. Prepping is also for personal SHTF events. I wonder how many of those people that are hungry wish that they had taken the advice of the “crazy” preppers and stored up plenty of food and other necessities that they could be using right now. I don’t blame the people that are suffering from hunger, I blame the terrible image of preparing that so many of these anti-prepping and anti-freedom characters that try to blacken the good names of people that prepare.

Preparation is for all bad times, no matter what brings it on, with any level from individual to worldwide SHTF. If an article like this doesn’t prove how important it is to prepare for a rainy day when times are good for the individual, I don’t know what else will. Prepare and always know you are doing the wisest course of action, it will pay off a lot one day and you will be thankful and grateful you have prepared.

          • The economic situation is not improving, despite what those in charge may tell us.

Unemployment rates rose in 44 U.S. states in July
            (www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/aug/17/unemployment-rates-rose-44-us-states-july/)

          • I dont save hardly anything , I cant ……..I’m having to spend it on things like Dragunov PSL 54’s , ammunition , dry goods , toilet paper , water storage ………damn I Have a lot of bills 😉

          • Every medicaid patient i see has tatooes. If there is a cutback or stoppag of welfare, food stamps, Jessie jackson and the other trouble makers will tell the masses to go take what they have a right to..at the grocery store, jewlery store, clothing store..just like in New Orlean same result different reason.

        • Kind of a judgemental statement from a pastor. I guess that “judge not” injuction is just a suggestion, not a command. There are numerous reasons are unable to save, not just spend thriftiness. If you were struck down by a serious illness and had huge medical bills, how long would your money last?

          • @ JoeinNC. Many people that are doing just fine don’t prepare at all, they have the money yet they think of this as unnecessary. Yet these same individuals pay into all sorts of insurances that they are not even required to have. Kind of a contradiction of paying for insurance that for years or decades you never use, but don’t have any reserve food in the house that costs a fraction of what the insurance that you have never used. Preps are insurance against starving to death after SHTF or having to get stale food at the food bank after a personal SHTF event.

There are homeless people that have saved up reserves. There are very poor people that can use coupons for free items all the time that they can store without cracking the budget. I have gotten much using coupons for free. People don’t save for the future in regards to food and other necessities because they don’t want to. Prepping is a mind set, and a very excellent one at that. 🙂

          • “Judgements” have to be made very day. We either use good judgement or bad judgement. Some people just LOVE to use that “judge not” against people when God did not intend for us to use no judgement at all. Common sense requires…..judgement.

            • From my recollection the “judge not” was directed to judging others. You are correct that we would do best to practice self judgement.

Too difficult for so many, so maybe we should just let them sleep. We do what we can, they don’t listen, not our responsiblity.

            • No, you also have the right to judge if someone belongs in your life or not. If you have kids this right becomes a responsibility.

I won’t judge them in any “spiritual” sense but I’m damn sure going to make a judgement call as to whether they are a net benefit or a net hazard to me personally.

          • Actually, God sets up Judges the same as he sets up kings. The statement doesn’t mean you aren’t to judge (that is a necessity)it means live your life to be favorably judged in return.

          • Wrong Joe!
You can judge the sin, just not the sinner.

          • JoeinNC: Ah, you must be one of those folks who refer to 5th grade as “my senior year”. What PP said was an observation not a judgement or a criticism, but you’d have known that had you pursued a higher education say to 6th grade. On the other hand I was making a judgement call yesterday on all of those who have made welfare a way of life. I understand folks need help from time to time whether it’s from the government, or private sources, in order to get back on their feet. What I resent are the life-long-loafers who feels that the rest of us owe them a living. They have one thing in common and it’s that they all lack the emotional control to have any fiscal disipline. They buy plasma tv’s, tricked-out cars or giant pickups, and wear a lot of bling and or tatoos. Yet they don’t own anything of real value like a home. They’re very impulsive like little children. So WTSHTF they are going to die enmasse because like little children, they can’t take care of themselves. Do I want to see people suffer and die, absolutley not, but that’s just they way it’s going to be. And before any of you self-righteous diversity loving clowns out there before youget on my case about being a racist-stop! I mean blacks, latins, and PWTT (poor white trailer trash), any one who lacks the emotional maturity to apply the fiscal disipline needed in order to take care of needs ahead of childish wants. Hope this cleared things up a little. Have a great day everyone.

            • I spell it as judgment and not as judgement.

        • same story here for me prep pastor…preparing and saving all of the time, before losing job and after. still out of work, but making old fashioned hobbies and crafts pay off while prepping.

          • In defense of Pastor,
I, too, have done charity work. I am delighted to be of help to many of the needy. But there are others who make me strain for every bit of Christian charitableness within me. A few examples…

A woman who told me she couldn’t spend four dollars for a needed antbiotic because she needed her smokes more

My own sister (sorry to say) who berated charity services for giving her children clothes that weren’t fashionable enough

People who come for help but curse and swear because service isn’t fast enough or they don’t receive enough assistance or things aren’t the more expensive brands that they’re used to. I even had a friend who donated gift packages to needy families at Christmas who nearly quit doing so after one family looked at her gifts, made fun of them for not being expensive enough and gave them back to her.

One thing to keep in mind when it comes to cars– I know some families where many people live under one roof. They may own one car and share it among the entire group. They often will have a very nice car but it represents the combined efforts of family members. I knew one Hmong immigrant family that had one car like this for about twenty people. Everyone worked together to build a new life in the US. Their kids would even pick wild greens during recess to take to their families for meals. They were amazing hardworking people who only came in for assistance because the school social worker was worried about the children.

It is hard to know who “deserves” help and who doesn’t. I cannot see myself completely turning everyone away like some people say they will do. But it is hard to know the boundaries and I think it is especially hard for those of us in helping professions, like the ministry and in healing professions, to know how to handle this.

        • PP

“The real problem is our savings rate.”

Substitute was for is. In the times of plenty I was laughed at by some family because i saved. That “go in debt” and spend like a drunk sailor (sorry drunks and sailors) just did not wash with me.

“because I saved during the years of plenty”

Agree 100%. I’m now vindicated. Putting that aside the million dollar question is, “What do you do now”?

          • A scary thought is ……….what if within the next month …….the US dollar becomes worthless ? Then all you have saved will also become fire starter . Buy things you need for preps now while it is still worth something .

I only say this because as unstable as things are , if you can afford to do it ……now may be a good time to do so .
My girl and I are the same age , she grew up in the Soviet Union , she has a lot of horror stories about that place . One of them was that they decided to change out their currency system , the people had a narrow window in wich to swap out all their old currency for the new currency ……..if they missed the deadline and they still had it ……it was now worth nothing ! that meant peoples life savings in some cases .Gone ! and even those that did make the deadline got much less back in the exchange . When things are about to collaps , desperation makes governments try the strangest things to slow it . Just sayin

            • TR, I can relate. My wife is from Ukraine. Was born and raised during the Soviet occupation. Long lines at stores for basic items. Haul your water from the local well. Even today, the average income is only $200 a month. These people live the tough life right now. People here take so much for granted and will have no clue what to do when the system fails. I feel fortunate that I am married to someone who has walked the walk. When it goes down she will be in the old normal, we will be in the new normal and many will not make it.

            • @ T.R.

Quote” A scary thought is ……….what if within the next month …….the US dollar becomes worthless ? Then all you have saved will also become fire starter . Buy things you need for preps now while it is still worth something.”

Buy preps first. Then if you feel ok with what you have physical gold and silver is the savings to invest in.

        • Its all around a very sad situation.

        • Amen Pastor! I save for a rainy day. I scrimp and save. What I buy is quality and I care for it with the mindset that I will hand it to my great grand children. As we all should. Also Pastor, thank you kindly for sharing your thoughts on the last post about my potential winter heating problem, it is a concern.

Anyway, we can’t really put any food on the table when the new NIKE LEBRON JAMES SNEAKERS cost $315. and we must all buy a pair for all of our children. Priorities man, remember your priorities!

          • SilverFox.
A quick story to support your statement.
I was in a shopping mall that was in its death throes with less than 50% occupancy.
Way less, not a particularly big mall and it was eerie to walk thru sections that were very
dim with stretches of empty stores. In this dying mall, there were 5 sneaker stores! 5!
And a Starbucks that all seamed to be doing fine.

        • Exactly! 🙂

        • We did also, but after 5 years of this, it is getting very low. My husband is also a pastor and we have 3 kids. Our expenses are about to go way up with 2 teenagers (car insurance and college). We are pretty sure he is about to get his pay cut/not get paid. We have been holding out for 5 1/2 years here with no raise at all. We are having to look for somewhere else to go. I do not like using up our reserve supplies, but have no choice because we do not need any unnecessary expenses and cannot move all this stuff either. We really need the prayers of all the believers out there. Thanks. I know God will make a way for us.

          • GA Girl, Will the church not allow your husband to get a part time job to help supplement his salary? He should try a funeral home. I know several pastors who supplement their salaries that way. I’ll be praying for yall.

        • yes blame the victims. The reason why we are screwed in not because of cell phone and new cars, we are screwed because most good paying jobs are shipped overseas. I know plenty of people who don’t fit your definition of “big spenders” who work 2-3 jobs and pay only for what they need and now what they want and still can’t put much for rainy days. Please try to move away from your prejudices of people who are going hard times as lazy or spenders and open your mind and see that they are not the only ones to blame.
Prepared for 7 years?? we would like to know what you mean by it?

        • How can you save when they sent all the jobs offshore. You sound rather cold, heartless and soulless pastor! People with your attitude are part of the problem.

        • LOL, I just checked Craig’s List and under the heading
FREE FOOD FOR THE POOR was this offer:

I have 3 Bags of food for a Family/person in Need.
I had Several No Shows last night, this MUST GO TODAY!!!!
or I will throw in Trash.

So, exactly what kind of food was this? Outdated? Dented cans?

          Sheesh…..

      2. Im thinking they missed about another 40 states..

          • Thanks Mac.

yes it is a sorry state of affairs..clowns to the left of us jokers to the right..stuck in the middle with no voice

or at least not one thay would listen to anyways that is

          • Yeah , glad I dont live in the south . Out here in the west , we tend to be the last to be affected by things like that ………but it does eventually come around to hitting us as well .

      3. Prepared Pastor,

Thats great for you, you are a lucky man, however that are alot of good people that are just now beginning to wake up. I myself was woke up 1yr and 8 months ago and tring to prepp in todays system gets harder by the day. I really feel for folks that are just now opening their eyes, for many its too late to get their house in order for what we think is coming.I guess with alot of faith some will make it.

        God Bless you,

        DPS

        • Luck had little to do with it. The instructions for living an abundant life are in the Bible. I was a college drop out with $400, no job, and nowhere to live. I got married anyway and moved to a state that was hiring where we got minimum wage jobs and rented a little apartment until we could buy a used mobile home in a nice park. While I was paying for that I looked for a good deal on land. Once the trailer was moved to my land I started planning the house which I built myself. Then we rented the trailer to pay the costs of operating the house.

Anyone who has ever lived in a place nicer than a mobile home, bought a car on time (I drive an ’89 F-250), paid for TV channels (they’re still free) or Internet had money to prep, but chose to spend it on other things. I’ve had more than my share of tribulation. We were even on welfare for a month when my wife needed surgery, but even then we set some food stamp meals back for later.

I may sound harsh, but it was not me who said ‘everyone reaps what they sow’. That too is from the Bible. There are a lot of people who have poverty habits.

It isn’t that I do not feel sympathy for the hungry. I volunteer at a soup kitchen which by the way serves anyone so if you want to eat there and save the food you would have eaten for later. It’s just that just like people are ‘single for a reason’ they are also ‘broke for a reason’ and more often than not that reason is there behavior. The exception to that are young people entering an economy that other people screwed up for them. Nevertheless, the only thing they can control is themselves so they need to adapt if they want to thrive.

          • Prepared Pastor,

Sure didn’t mean to ruffle your feathers brother. The luck I was referred too was being awake for all those years.

            DPS

            • No offense taken and I was lucky to be close to my grandparents who lived during the great depression. Ironically, my parents spent every dime they ever made. Fortunately, they got a six-figure inheritance from them. Hopefully they will not burn through that before they die broke.

            • PP, I hear and agree with you. However, some of us such as myself have worked hard all our lives pursuing the American dream. I have been self-employed most of my life and in 2006 saw what I believed would be the opportunity to buy the business that would carry me through to retirement and beyond. Pretty much dumped everything I had into purchasing the place. Then of course, the economy tanked and trying to keep it alive and viable has been a nightmare. If I close I lose everything as many have already through no fault of their own. I even found out today that a local business with the same owner for the past 25 years is going under. It sucks big time.

          • good job, most dont do that.

i didnt, but 2008 woke me up. if the world governments didnt hit the print button like they did and there was no recovery; i would have been in real trouble. unfortunately, that will make it worse for everyone down the line.

but if there’s a silver lining, those of us on the lookout now, should be able to help others when the SHTF.

          • absolutely right on!

          • prepared pastor, how do you pay for internet etc and gas to drive without a job? do you do side jobs and things around that give you money for things? im just wondering how you get by. I mean that with all respect. I respect everything you do and your honesty. Like paying for taxes on your land etc.

            • Yo Clint ~

There is a whole ‘another economic world’ out there, if you know where and how to find it. You need to know how to tap into this world if you want to survive the coming difficult times ahead of us.

It’s called the “Black Economy”. It works either on a barter type of basis or a cash only kind of a deal. There are no contracts, statements, receipts or other paperwork involved. Your word is your bond. Your word had better be ‘good’ or the word will soon get around on you and no one will want to deal with you.

The networks that you cultivate and develop now may save your ass later.

Everyone has a skill or ability or a resource that they can tap into to develop a secondary source of income. You may have to think outside the box, but if you will put your mind to it, you may be surprised at what you will be able to develop.

God Bless and good luck to all who post here.

            • madmarkie -yes I understand that but I dont know how people can get by without work to pay property taxes lets say 4000 a year. thats what im wondering.

          • yep or hospital bills like joeinNC stated and got red thumbed for, is what happened to me, wife got uterine cancer and the bills we still owe a shit load on and were over 100k. Why would I eat in a soup kitchen when there are others who need more then me? that would be greedy.

            this from PP above.
It isn’t that I do not feel sympathy for the hungry. I volunteer at a soup kitchen which by the way serves anyone so if you want to eat there and save the food you would have eaten for later.

Why would I take food from someone who may need it? Would be like me being wealthy and going on a street corner with a can to try and get spare change from ppl.

        • DPS, I also woke up about a year and a half ago. When I first started, there were sales every week at 2 or 3 different stores that were great to store preps. Not any more. Good sales are becoming more and more infrequent. Has anyone else noticed this? I am glad I started when I did, because the increase in food prices is going to make it tough to stock up.

          • Yes, all the email contacts, all those on prepping forums have been discussing that for 6 months.
All I can say is thank you Lord for providing the resources to stock up on those items on sale when there was a sale.

          • Went to Aldi this week. Never saw the stock so thin.

          • There seem to be more usable things on sale than ever before. The sales papers are full of good deals. The latest great deal was 4-packs of Green Giant niblets corn for $1 at Roses. That’s only 25 cents a can. Needless to say I bought enough for a year or two. They also had chicken leg quarters for 58 cents a pound. Today I got mustard for $1. It lasts pretty much forever, so I’m stocked. If nothing happens, I still beat inflation. It’s better than money in the bank, especially since my bank only pays .25 percent.

      4. No wonder talk radio has excelled over the years. The media whether it’s NBC Nightly News, CBS Face The Nation or Good Morning America, is all basically the same crap. Americans for the most part have figured out their gig.

A longtime ago I figured it was left leaning and they lost my trust. Now I research stuff i’m interested in and i’m better off for that.

        • So I have seen this economy since 2008 in a Depression and not a recession. When I drive by and see signs on the road selling a 3 bedroom 2 bath house with a pool for 45K you know this is not a recession.

I have never bought into their recovery BS. Americans have been hurting and are hurting even more since Odumber has been in office.

        • And I don’t listen to talk radio because it is 90% conservative–and they lie all the time. And the reason I know they lie is that I actually do the research. For example, I bet you never heard of or read the Pentagon report on global warming. It says climate change is a greater threat to humanity than terrorism. But don’t worry, I’m sure Rush Limbaugh and the Koch brothers will help you out during the next drought or flood…if they ever stop claiming global warming doesn’t exist.

          • Yep, beware that left leaning news, where faux network consistently has the highest viewers.

          • And the Pentagon is known for their truthfulness?

          • Sharonsj- you can tell you have taken too many colleges courses and believe the other side of things. mother nature will do what it wants, we cant alter it. even if we heat this planet with all we got. volcanos, algae, everything is put into equilibrium. if one side is out of balance the earth will do what it wants to keep things in the center. I don’t believe we have affected the earth by global warming. They just had an article out on yahoo 2 days ago saying co2 and pollution is at a all time low. So what do you believe? We have cars with catylatic converts and diesel particulate filters on diesels now. In the 70′ we polluted way more. So if you believe global warming is more deadly than a nuke from terrorism go ahead and believe that. The earth gets further away and closer with cycles each year. Sure temp and glacier melting effects wind currents etc but I dont agree with you. The earth will always heal itself from whatever we do to it. Id be more worried from a nuke blast my young friend. you have a right to your opinion and you can call us stupid or many on here might not like what I write but wont call you stupid, I just dont believe you and I think msnbc lies 10x more than fox or CNN.

            • Our current weather pattern matches up with the weather patterns during the 50’s. Educated meteorologist point this out when asked their opinion on global warming. They don’t believe for one minute that people have anything to do with it when they study it in depth and can point to the repeat in weather patterns.

            • clint, google fox news lies: 50 million 700 thousand hits. google msnbc lies: 18 million hits. do you really believe you are more well informed than 2000 climate scientists worldwide of all ethnic, religious, ideological, and varied backgrounds? Scientists are the polar opposite of big oil lobbyists: their careers depend on arriving at the truth with lots of evidence to support this truth. If they are exposed as frauds, their career is finished, unlike limpball, mannity, and other snakeoil peddlers. personally i, as you believe climate change is not so much a problem at this time in history. our biggest problems are greed, hate, ignorance, overpopulation, and religious-fanaticism. this comment will be collapsed due to poor rating: we are finished.

          • sharonsj,

Charlton Heston, reading from Michael Crichton’s jurassic park

You think man can destroy the planet? What intoxicating vanity! Let me tell you about our planet. Earth is four-and-a-half-billion-years-old. There’s been life on it for nearly that long, 3.8 billion years. Bacteria first; later the first multicellular life, then the first complex creatures in the sea, on the land. Then finally the great sweeping ages of animals, the amphibians, the dinosaurs, at last the mammals, each one enduring millions on millions of years, great dynasties of creatures rising, flourishing, dying away — all this against a background of continuous and violent upheaval. Mountain ranges thrust up, eroded away, cometary impacts, volcano eruptions, oceans rising and falling, whole continents moving, an endless, constant, violent change, colliding, buckling to make mountains over millions of years. Earth has survived everything in its time.
It will certainly survive us. If all the nuclear weapons in the world went off at once and all the plants, all the animals died and the earth was sizzling hot for a hundred thousand years, life would survive, somewhere: under the soil, frozen in arctic ice. Sooner or later, when the planet was no longer inhospitable, life would spread again. The evolutionary process would begin again. Might take a few billion years for life to regain its present variety. Of course, it would be very different from what it is now, but the earth would survive our folly, only we would not. If the ozone layer gets thinner, ultraviolet radiation sears earth, so what? Ultraviolet radiation is good for life. It’s powerful energy. It promotes mutation, change. Many forms of life will thrive with more UV radiation. Many others will die out. You think this is the first time that’s happened? Think about oxygen. Necessary for life now, but oxygen is actually a metabolic poison, a corrosive glass, like fluorine.
When oxygen was first produced as a waste product by certain plant cells some three billion years ago, it created a crisis for all other life on earth. Those plants were polluting the environment, exhaling a lethal gas. Earth eventually had an atmosphere incompatible with life. Nevertheless, life on earth took care of itself. In the thinking of the human being a hundred years is a long time. Hundred years ago we didn’t have cars, airplanes, computers or vaccines. It was a whole different world, but to the earth, a hundred years is nothing. A million years is nothing. This planet lives and breathes on a much vaster scale. We can’t imagine its slow and powerful rhythms, and we haven’t got the humility to try. We’ve been residents here for the blink of an eye. If we’re gone tomorrow, the earth will not miss us.

Man is here for a short time, we are probably a thorn in the side of all the animals as well as mother nature. We build in places that should never accommodate human life, we trample land that should be set aside for the wildlife. We have stolen the habitat of many, in order for us to be comfortable at all costs. To live in harmony with Mother Nature and show respect would be asking too much of mere man. Global warming is a natural phenomenon and the thought that man could destroy this world is ridiculous. The world will destroy us before we can even begin to chip away at her. Cows produce 28% of all methane in the atmosphere, should we tax them and blame them for global warming? I hope you pick up a bible and be concerned with how you live your life and pray for the ones who you disagree with as well as yourself, because you don’t really know if you are right. You are not God, but you will be judged by God in accordance with his rules, not yours.

          • The greatest threat right now, to all nations, is chemtrails, since it entails famine, starving the populations, and stealing farmers land by the elites causing the droughts and floods.
When they finish destroying all crop soil, and Monsanto enters the picture to sell drought resistant and flood resistant seeds, only the rich will be able to buy.

It’s a scam to reduce carbon to the atmosphere in the developed world only to export that fuel, namely coal to the developing world. China in 2010 has surpassed the US as the greatest carbon to atmosphere contributor. China is putting on line two new coal fired electrical generating plants per week that for all practical purposes are devoid of environmental controls.

All that is being accomplished is less coal is used in the developing world lowering price and increasing availability to further development in the developing world.

All f this is just another step to further globalization.

            • Oops less used in the developed, more available for the developing

          • Just a quick review of paleoclimatological data will shoot holes in the “global warming” hype.

And the new phrase “climate change” simply proves desperation. That phrase was coined after Yogi Berra’s famous lines because you far-Left sheep really believe you have “deep depth”.

          • Sharonsj:

You are wrong concerning every single statement in your post. I will just cover one of them.

Carbon dioxide absolutely does not cause global temperatures to rise. If you look closely at the chart of carbon dioxide and global temperatures, you will see that the temperature rises first, then carbon dioxide rises. It is forced out of the oceans when the temperature rises. The temperature rises and falls mostly because of the sun.

We have had the same crap being spouted by a small minority of scientists every 30 or 40 years. Back in the 1970s, Newsweek said we were going to have another ice age and freeze to death. Back in the 1930s, the papers said we were going to burn up. Back in the 1890s, the papers said we were going to freeze to death. In another 15 or 20 years, the same crackpots will be calling for an ice age again.

It’s very obvious that you did not actually do the research.

      5. Not only is that bad but most people have no cash savings at all and are living on credit cards. Soon as they get cut off they are in trouble BIGTIME.And im sure you can guess where they are going to be looking to get food.

      6. This makes me very sad, one of the problems is that people do not cook real food. We were poor but never hungry, if you have basic staples you can cook good meals. Shop wisely, and don’t buy pre-made food. You can also stretch more expensive foods by adding rice, beans, or any number of other things.

        • This is the truth.
People have to learn how to shop smarter and stretch there bucks much further. There are so many people out there who are paying a premium for pre-made and processed foods when they can be buying items they can prepare on there own. I hope people finally wake up. Its really sad when you see people buying canned goods at Walmart and big name stores for 1.50 a can when i bought the same stuff for .38-.48 when it is on sale at other stores. I think it really comes down to people being lazy and buying things as a convenience.

          • Last night we had brown beans–no, not pinto, I’m from Tennessee, they’re brown–mashed sweet potatoes, biscuits w. apple butter, and tomatoes.
            What a meal.
I cooked the brown beans, was given the sweet potatoes, I grew the tomatoes, and Southern Biscuits for the bread, my canned apple butter made from applesauce, not whole apples.
What a meal, folks, what a God-given meal that many would turn their noses at.

            • As a man with an Italian momma and French Canadian dad, there’s not much I would turn my nose up at. Certainly not the feast you mentioned. Wanna trade recipes sometime? I make one helluva pasta sauce

          • @Azam…I agree with you(as I am just putting on a batch of home made beans)these will be delicious!

Just wanted to tell you and everyone on the site that earlier this evening, I watched a news “crawler” on the bottom of the t.v. screen with different news items….. it said that 1/2 the food in USA(and probably here in Canada too) is not eaten and thrown in garbage! Can’t remember exactly how much in $$, but think around 1/2 billion dollars. I suppose they were talking about leftovers from restaurants, hotels, convention centers, even off our own dinner plates, etc…..but was shocking to hear!

        • Anyone who knows by experience how two people can live off a bag of potatoes or a pot of beans for a weeks knows this truth.

          • Been there, done that and doing it now for the most part. I have learned to love Top Ramen. At .28 cents a pop, that a is a pretty darn cheap lunch. We eat light thru the day and have a hearty dinner at night. I fully expect that this might change in the future too if there is a dollar collapse. Been watching the dollar index lately and it’s down to 81.91 at close today. Thats lower than I’ve seen it in a long time. If it gets near 70 – bank run time!

            Change before you have to.

            • And the only reason I don’t eat Ramen EVERY night, is my butt thanks, me as I can’t buy new clothes.

        • That is so true I know a family with 3 kids about a year and a half ago he was out of work and she was thinking about prepping so I was trying to help them. She came over one day had just been to the store she had had 20 dollars I asked what she bought. Frozen lasagna for two meals a couple cans denty Moore stew some pot pies a loaf of bread and a couple other equally crazy things. I tried to explain to her she could cook from scratch and eat better for cheaper her comment was she had no idea how to cook from scratch. My aunt and I both tried to work with her, not much interest in learning how. Then there is my sister in-law her and my brother were down visiting I asked her if she wanted some fresh herbs, she said no had no idea how to use herbs they pretty much eat all prepackaged food. It is sad that so many people have no idea how to cook even some of the basic things (or just don’t want to). I have had very hard times as a single mom but I managed with out help. I cooked everything from scratch and grew a garden. I think a lot of people would be able to eat better if they shopped and cooked a little differently I know there are people who honestly need help and that is what it is for but so many take advantage. How are these people going to survive when food prices go sky high.

          • You know its funny how “poor” people eat better than the rich ones…by that I mean it seems that as people have gotten away from the land and climbed the ladder to a so called better life they forgot how to eat,how to cook….I make very little cash money yet I woundnt stoop to a TV dinner, saw people eat em but Ive never tried em,they look bad and smell bad…lots of stuff like that, you know what I mean?….I dont eat ramen noodles because of the cottonseed oil in em,after all most of the worlds cotton is GMO by monsanto and if itll kill the sheep/goats grazing the residue off the cotton fields, well I reckon it isnt too good for humans…but thats just me…anyhow I just thought about that as I was reading, some real good food being talked about here tonight, got me some homegrown stew (Bison) going on the burner myself and all those successful people up top that there ladder dont know how to cook?!…amazing! “Live free or die tryin”

          • And the thing is, you don’t even have to know how to cook if you just pick up a simple cook book or the USDA’s Healthy Meals guide. My favorite cook book is “From Amish and Mennonite Kitchens”. Every recipe is made from simple things everyone usually has in their pantry and they are all DELICIOUS and feed alot of people or make enough for a couple of meals. The USDA Healthy Meals guide (can be downloaded free) should be REQUIRED for use by everyone on food stamps. Food stamps would go alot farther if recipients were required to use it and purchase unprocessed foods instead of being able to purchase all of the pre-packaged foods they are currently allowed to.

            • Sunshine, don’t get me started on all the crap the EBT’ers buy. I know first hand, at least at my store.

            • My mother told me before she died to never sell my Amish and Mennonite Cookbook. I looked through it one night and I noticed that every recipe consisted of staples that one should have in their pantry.

Only one or sometimes two extra non-pantry items were needed in the recipes. For example, meat or a vegetable that could be raised, bought or grown. It is a good book, and I am glad that I listened to my mother.

She grew up in the Great Depression, being raised by relatives when her mother had to go out to work, since my mother’s father was hit by a train and died when she was only one month old. My mother understood the recipes in that book.

With very little extra, and a pantry full of the right staples, if a person knows how to cook and bake from those recipes with any available heating source, their family can survive, and great help, by the knowledge of how to use those recipes, to those in need could be realized.

      7. Do you know Jesus?….I mean really have a relationship with Him. That’s your, mine, our, ONLY Chance.

Approach Him today. I’m not asking you for money, or to join some church. Do it for yourself, your wife, your kids, or your parents.

Just say this and mean it, “Jesus, I know that no one is perfect and that includes me. I’m sorry for screwing up, please come into my heart and into my life. Protect me and mine from the wrath to come, both in this world and the next. I want to be a child of God, Amen.

        • Amen John. The beginning of true preperation. Don’t forget, He also told them to buy a sword for themselves.

        • sky fairies

        • The 14 thumbs down need our prayers, everyone.
          God bless

      8. And P.S. I am an economist and there is nothing remotely close to a recovery happening. The only way is to let the dollar crash and burn and then start over.

      9. Not being able to afford food is one of the biggest reasons for the uprising in Egypt. Yeah our media says its all about the evil dictator, but the fact is there were people starving and they had little else to lose but riot. We’re getting there, but won’t till after election day. Obama wants to make sure his re coronation goes off with out a hitch, but if he were to falter he’ll leave the riots (and blame) to Romney and the House.

        • Jim you are right. The early news reports told the story of lack of jobs and lack of food and no hope things would improve. That is why the people were on the streets.

      10. Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Arizona is addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Certain people are angry that the U S might protect its own borders, might make it harder to snesk into this country and, once here to stay indefinitely. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests. Let’s say I break into your house. Let’s say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, NO I like it here. It’s better than my house. I’ve made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I’ve done all the things you don’t like to do. I’m hard working and honest(except for when I broke into your house). Now according to the protesters: You are REQUIRED to let me stay in your house. You are REQUIRED to feed me. You are REQUIRED to add me to your family’s insurance plan. You RQUIRED to educate my kids. You are REQUIRED to provide other benefits to me and my family. But if you call the police or try to force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT TO BE THERE. It’s only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I’m just trying to better myself. I’m hard working and honest, person, (except for well you know, I did break into your house), and WHAT A DEAL IT IS FOR ME! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior. Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE so you can communicate with me. Why can’t people see how ridiculous this is? ONLY IN AMERICA! There you have it! This is just one of the reasons that 1 in 5 people have trouble putting food on the table! WE ALL have to pay for this kind B S taking place. Thats just me and my thoughts!

        • Amen – illegals are a real hot button issue for me. They will be a huge part of what takes this country down. They are shills for the PTB, and are too stupid to know it. When I see pics of their protests/tantrums – I can see the hate and defiance etched on their faces.

California rolls out the welcome mat for them. When Moonbean got elected, I knew there was no hope in getting rid of them here. This state is doomed and I so wish I could get out.

        • @copperhead…I like your approach and ‘object lesson’. Clear and concise and for the those that are mesmerized with MSNBC, NBC, CNN, etc……elementary enough for the brain dead to actually grasp.

        • That was so good of a description of invaders (illegals) taking advantage of others. I have to send this to my friends in Arizona and Texas. Great job copperhead.

        • Very good analogy there copperhead….

        • sound sliek what the euros did to the native americans eh?

          • False argument. If you live here then do the honorable thing and move somewhere else. Would not want you to feel guilt.

        • It’s not only America – we have the same issue in the UK. Noone has ever been able to tell me how we can’t manage to police the borders of a N.Sea ISLAND yet (clue – these people do not swim the 26 miles of channel to get here from mainland Europe!). It’s by design my friend.

      11. That’s just a lie; ABC, CBS, CNN, ET, MSNBC, NBC, NPR and others say we are in full recovery mode. I’ve been talking about the Head Lies for almost 5 years now and even my family think I’m wearing a Tin Foil Hat.

Here is a new Kicker I just heard, but have not yet verified. Prisons and individuals cells are being used in the new construction numbers. It was bad enough they were using apartments and each apartment was counted as a new home start, but prison cells, come on!!!

With my customers we are seeing a lot of eat or pay the Auto Insurance. Many seniors are having to let their home insurance go too.

Our three branches of government which were to be checks and balances are now working together and conspiring to fleece the citizens.

There is no recovery and there will not be a recovery unless we cut all government by 58% and outlaw entitlements. I know that’s a hard pill to swallow but that is what needs to happen either by design or collapse, makes no difference.

When people get hungry they will kill to eat. These are very dangerous times and getting worse by the day. They can feed you all the propaganda in the world and I can guarantee you will never get full.

Stack it deep, good luck to all as the slow motion collapse continues!

        • That my freind is WHY they are buying hollow points!

        • And you Sir have hit the nail on the head, until all Americans come together and replace what we have for our present government this great nation will falter and eventually fail. But that the goal of all politicans at this time in our history.

          • Yeah well if we try they now have enough ammo to shoot every citizen 4 times and that’s just counting what DHS bought.

Our government has gone wild and I just don’t know if we the people will ever regain control with watering the tree of Liberty!!

            • You are right, P.O., our government has gone rogue.

            • time we get done “watering” the top branches are all youll be able to see….gonna take a heap of doin but we can…we must and we will 🙂

      12. Like gas prices, once food prices inflate they will not return to today’s levels. This will be considered the good old days. Many more will suffer as prices inflate while jobs and earnings get slashed. If you have the ability, divert funds into preps, especially food. This is going to be painful.

        • Truly! I keep telling people they may as well double up in homes now and spend that rent money on provisions, few people are willing to adapt. Read ‘The Collapse of Complex Societies’ by Tainter and you will find one common thread – FAILURE TO ADAPT.

        • You’re right about gas prices. They may drop a couple cents here and there, but they will continue to go up. Hitch hiking will be making a big comeback. Time to break out the old bumper sticker. “Gas, grass or ass…nobody rides for free”

          • Still have it on my 60′ chevy. Have no offers since the 70’s. However, you right times are a changing.

      13. Are any of us sure that we are going to have an election in Nov.?

Soros is buying gold and saying that the Euro will end by years end. SHTF Plan has run all kinds of articles on how the economy is about to fall apart.

Meanwhile The PM of Israel is “Determined” to attack Iran before the election.

Hugo Chavez said that any attack on Iran will be considered an attack on his country, which is where the U.S, gets 10% of our oil from.

Putin has subs in the Gulf and has his forces doing practice runs on our Air Bases along the West Coast.

Just one terror attack on U.S. soil will be enough for Comrade Obama to suspend the elections “For the sake of the Country”.

        • we may have an election ( or what ever they want to call it)
Im more concerned about the time between the “election” and the time of the seating or swearing in of the new guy if that is to take place
If the Big 0 doesnt get his next 4 years that period of time from finding out, to when the next fool steps in could be a very scary time.

The 77 days between Election Day, Nov. 4, 2012, and Inauguration Day ( i think thats how it goes) could be the nastiest 77 days of US history if he doesnt get his way..the next podium sniffer will not be any better im sure..but if the current podium sniffer fails to get his second term, it could be lights out here

        • Is it possible these cats are buying up all this gold to become the new US banks if something does happen? They will have gold to back up the money and not just a ” promise “. Just an uninformed theory.

          Theory. It’s a carpenter thing!

      14. “There are a lot of people who have poverty habits”

        Amen to that Pastor.

      15. I think this got past the tipping point when minimum wage was jacked up, and it became too expensive to hire entry level skill sets. I did not receive a payraise equivelant to the raising of minimuim wage, and the resulting inflation caused by more money chasing the same amount of goods. If you do not set a little asice either cash or food, andc live within your means then sucks to be you. I do not have a car note, cable bill, sattelite dish, and serve home cooked meals on a regular basis. We buy in bulk, break it into meal sized packages, freeze it, and use rice or instant taters as a stretching measure. My oldest child and her husband can’t stretch 385 dollars in EBT through the month but both smoke, and they always have sodas, Life is hard, it gets even harder if you are stupid!

        • I commend your post–most parents defend stupidity of their young.
          Good for you.

      16. And the official price inflation is a lie. All this ZIRP money the Goldman Sachs and JPMorgans of the world gets is used to speculate in commodities that drives the price of necessities up and up. Do your wages keep up? Hell,no.Don’t blame this all on the common man.Hang some bankers

        • They lock people in psych hospitals for saying stuff like this these days

      17. Yea, the numbers reporting difficulty feeding themselves and those on food stamps are astronomical but who wouldn’t report that if you can get free food.

The number of poor and very fat is astronomical in this country. I don’t see to many skinny Somali types walking around in America. People here are OVER fed not under fed.

        • You are correct wolfgang! It is a total government/activist lie that there are hungry people in America. The huge lumbering slobs that are seen every where in public are the poorest in most cases. They might not have much but they have plenty of food. I have seen hunger but not here. I have been hungry on purpose just to see what it is like. Real hunger is very unpleasant, weakness, unable to function properly, sickness, desperation, panic, illness & many other complications. The hunger “they” speak of, is the little kid who gets up in the morning but does not want to eat simply because he is not hungry yet, it’s too early. When the teacher at school ask him why he doesn’t feel like studying, he says “because I’m hungry”, my mother didn’t make breakfast for me. The truth is, it is the fault of his lazy parents who don’t make the kid eat something before school. The activist thrive on this in order to further their program of subversion of our system. There is no hunger in America. Phi Alpha

        • Obesity is a symptom of malnutrtion.
Just because one is ‘fat’ does not mean that they are not starving.
Please understand that I am still agreeing and not arguing the point of our ‘over abundance’.

          • I see what you are trying to say, but I don’t think you are phrasing it right…although one can be malnourished and obese, say if you are living off of Funions and Faygo, I don’t think that obesity is a SYMPTOM of malnutrition, the way that bad teeth, bad skin, and propensity to assorted diseases are. It is the symptom of a horrifying diet that is full of completely empty calories.

            • You are most likely correct,I din’t say that correctly, thats what I get for typing at work in between other things…

        • What’s really rich is when those same fat poor say it costs too much for “healthy” food. I always look at them like they have 2 heads. It would do no good to argue with them. I offer them veggies from my garden and the response is “We don’t eat that at our house”. Sigh…..

          • Yes, I’ve heard that too, from relatives. I tell them they can pay more for healthy food now or spend it on health problems later. They’re probably just looking forward to Obamacare. Gerald Celente predicted a lot of weight gain in this country due to food prices and people eating fast food rather than sit-down restaurant food, etc. He was right!

      18. Y’all can correct me if I’m wrong. However, I think I’m close enough so that others can understand. Everyone needs to read this. It is very simple the way it is laid out. Anyone can understand what the numbers mean in 10 seconds.

Our national debt is out of control. Elected officials could explain this so everyone in America can understand it, but they really don’t want us to know how much of our money they have squandered and given away to buy votes so they can stay in office. Help Americans understand what’s really going on by passing this along. American citizens know how to fix things when they understand the problem. It’s what we do better than anyone else.

This cuts thru all the political doublespeak we get. It puts it into a much better perspective.

        Lesson # 1:

        * U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
        * Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000
        * New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
        * National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
        * Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000

Let’s now remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a household budget:

        * Annual family income: $21,700
        * Money the family spent: $38,200
        * New debt on the credit card: $16,500
        * Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
        * Total budget cuts so far: $38.50 (That’s thirty eight dollars and fifty cents)

        Got It ?????

OK now Lesson # 2: Here’s another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:

Let’s say, You come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood….and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.

What do you think you should do ……

Raise the ceilings, or pump out the sewage?

Y’all Beware! Your choice is coming Nov. 2012.

        • I’d burn down the house!

          • Man I almost typed the same answer…you beat me to it,yessir, sewage to the rafters?…we aint cleaning it out…wheres that can of gasoline?…oh and we’ll be tying those responsible to those rafters before we strike that match after all theyre very similar to whats filled the place up eh? 🙂

            • It just needs a little TLC, (torch, level, & clear!!)

        • What do you think you should do …… ???

I’m thinking it’s time to evacuate into the Woods Forest Mountains and pitch a tent ! Return to the Forest and Mother Earth !!!

          ~N.O.

          • EVACUATE – WHERE ??? Something everyone should consider is EVACUATION and temporary housing shelter i.e. tents tarp-lean-too sheds dug-out-cabin caves garages remote-hardened-buildings.

Be-ware of four and two legged predators.

THINK STRATEGIC UNKNOWN LOW TRAVELED AREAS 20 miles from town highways or more that has water FOR RE-TREATS AND THEN ORGANIZE perimeter SECURITY.

“It’s better to Run and Fight another day on your own terms – not theirs !”

            ~N.O.

            • Thought I would share this.
I bought a brand new military tent (16×20) at GovLiq for $600.00. ($7000.00 original cost). Then bought a 5×8 trailer from Craiglist to store it. (tent weighs 1200 lbs.)
Wifey thinks I’m nuts (not totally wrong), but I could throw a lot of preps on top of that tent, hitch up to the F250, and be down the road with a nice shelter.
I hope I don’t ever have to bug out, but I feel better with that tent-in-a-trailer.
              What strange times these are.

            • To Rick…exactly what is that tent made out of? Lead? I owned a Army/Navy store and survival biz for about a dz years and sold tents…never seen one weigh what youre sayin,no offence but a GP MEDIUM TENT, 16’X32′ 10’3 HIGH, CLOTH WEIGHS,220 lbs in all my records and a quick check with a source confirms this(modern vinyl or vintage canvas) and thats a bigger tent than you say you purchased….did you mis-type that weight? cause it cant be right…if it were than I and my Lady lifted 1200 lbs between us on alot of occasions.

        • What do you think you should do

I’m thinking about opening a sewage removal service and in the interest of political correctness only hiring illegal aliens and minorities. Can’t you people ever see the positive side of anything?

        • Excellent example. Love this site, smartest posters anywhere.

        • JSOC has been around forever. Was under them in the 90’s.

      19. I watch a lot of indicators. One is my own, and it’s called The Highlands Index. Nearby there is a super-sprawling shopping complex called The Highlands. It sits on a major freeway and both sides of the freeway are lined with restaurants. Behind them is all the shopping. When I leave work at 4:30 today it will be full to capacity. It will be all evening, and it will be all day tomorrow.

We’ll be one of the last bastions, if you will, down here in TX. When I see The Highlands one-half full, I’ll know we’re getting close to a reckoning.

I’ll let you know what I see.

        • I’ve had a clerk at one Dallas mall tell me the economy has not affected them at all. And the mall was truly packed. However, if you watch the shoppers at Southlake Town Center, even though every vehicle is a late model luxury vehicle, very few people are carrying shopping bags out of the stores.

      20. nds ofcarmsdThis is just the beginning. My step ad told me many things about his life as a young boy/man during the crash of ’29….9 families under one roof…having to keep sentinels at night to frighten off their NEIGHBORS (rural NW OH) to keep them from stealing their barn siding to heat their home….roving bands of armed men searching for occupied homes that were easy prey for food….no work…and when you COULD get a little day work, you took your family men with you to help because they shared the spoils.
But one thing he made sure I understood was “never let them make you believe it can’t happen again, because the bankers caused it and they’ll do it again”.
He finally joined the Civilian Conservation Corp working for… I think it was $20 a month and they had to send $15 back to their families.
He said the only reason it wasn’t worse was we didn’t have more mouths to feed than we had and it didn’t last any longer than it did….WWII broke out.

      21. Oh yeah BTW I forgot to mention……..

prep like your life depends on it……..’cause it does

      22. i am a gardener, a craftsperson, a seamstress, and i preserve the food that i grow. this summer is my first experience with dehydrating foods…got slices of potatoes drying right now. i found that much of the produce i buy does not keep for very long and i was wasting my money and having to throw out some of everything i bought…no more..now i just dry it then seal in jars. and while that is happpening i do my regular canning of meats and veggies. foods especially produce is just too expensive to let it rot before it gets cooked and eaten.

        • @Carynverell….Looks like you got a great “head start” on dehydrating your veggies! Good for you and your family! I am picking up my dehydrator on Thurs., and will google some receipes(as have never dehydrated b4, but wondering if you have to do anything special to the potato slices first so they don’t turn brown? Thanx and please advise.

        • To keep fresh produce fresh for salads or just eating raw, use the various Green (yellow/pink) bags with zeolite. They work and are reusable. Fruits/veggies will last weeks if kept dry. Place an absorbent paper towel in the bag and wrap a clean dry one around any cut produce. Just wash whatever you are taking out of the bag to eat at any given time. The key is dryness. Don’t tightly seal the bags. Store the bagged produce in the crisper. Rinse and dry bags entirely before reusing. Zeolite has been used for years in commercial produce storage and distribution. It is a molecular sieve that takes up ethylene, which is what ripens produce.

If you can only find wet produce thanks to the sprayer systems at the stores, just place the lettuce or whatever on towels on the counter until they dry off before placing in bags for storage. They will save you a lot of $$. Avoid precut bagged greens: they will spoil quickly no matter what you do. Whole head lettuce or whatever leaves you have harvested will last 2-3x as long as usual if you follow the directions.

As you use the produce, replace the damp towels w/dry ones. Dry the damp towels and use them for cleaning, as they are just fine.

Tomatoes that are ripe can be placed in green bags on the counter in a dim place. Don’t refrigerate fresh tomatoes. Especially now, with tomatoes ripening fast, this will extend your harvest for salads/sandwiches or just plain eating w/o having to dry or can everything.

      23. Off Topic, but you gotta hear this. My friend is cleaning his 12 ga shotgun. Thought it was unloaded when a shot went off into his bedroom wall clean through his house. No one was hurt. Neighbors hearing the shot called police. Police arrived and chalked it up as an accident. Later that night police called back to ask him what the make of the shotgun was??? Why? No crime was committed. Are they gearing up to take our guns? And something else to think about. It was a 12 ga buckshot BB shell at close range. Right through the house. Unless you live in a brick or stone house. Might wanna think about re-enforcing those walls or something. 12 ga shotgun will be a common weapon among looters once the S.H.T.F.

        • S V: If you can do not let them get that close.

        • wholly shit!
WTF? I have owned guns for over 36 years, and I’ve never had one “go off” especially when cleaning..
jeazus cripes tell him to get some f-n’ training

Its people like this that give us responsible gun owners a bad rap.
lucky he didnt blow his kids or wifes head off, let alone his own

          • Go up the thread to Satori’s post, and read the Darwin Awards.

        • How do you “think” a gun is unloaded?

Anyone that does not open the breach of a gun when they pick one up,look in the chamber And KNOW it is unloaded, 100%, no doubt in your mind, bet your life on it,(cause you are) to clean. look at,whatever, are a Darwin award winner in the making.

PLEASE,Be a real friend to this person and do an intervention, I am serious!

You need to help this friend and remove his guns from his control till you or a professional teach him proper gun ownership AND he learns to handle them correctly, He will kill someone by “accident” someday if you dont.

If he wants to blow you off or gets angry for demanding he do it. I would cut him loose as a friend before he implicates you in his overwhelming stupidity.

Don’t just let him be a guy “that has a gun too.” turn him into a Gun owner.

      25. WHERE IS THE CHURCH!!!!!!!! This is detestable to GOd and disgusting and maddening to me.
I’ll tell you where the sheeple americanized 501C3 whore church is….building new bigger fancier buildings….oh I’ll shut up now.

        • BJ, I am one of a handful in the ministry that echo your thoughts and have challenged others to prep.
As with our ‘taker society’, the many so called christians are doing the same with ‘God will take care of us’ (which He does but not as it is preached) thru “God won’t allow His people to suffer”. They believe in pretrib rapture (which isn’t taught in the bible).
Jesus warned us (Matt.24) to flee and also to buy a sword. A few in the ministry have called me asking “why aren’t the churches preparing?”. Answer:1) They are gathering teachers to tickle their ears.2) God has sent a strong delusion upon those that won’t believe. Remember to read Matt.7:21-23, this is the chaff/goats speaking to Christ.

      26. there is a whole underclass of people like this
        and it is GROWING

        http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article32250.htm

“About half of those living in McDowell County depend on some kind of relief check such as Social Security, Disability, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, retirement benefits, and unemployment to survive. They live on the margins, check to check, expecting no improvement in their lives and seeing none. The most common billboards along the roads are for law firms that file disability claims and seek state and federal payments. “Disability and Injury Lawyers,” reads one. It promises to handle “Social Security. Car Wrecks. Veterans. Workers’ Comp.” The 800 number ends in COMP.”

        • Is that McDowell County, NC?

          • Sorry…didn’t read the article first, although McDowell Country, NC isn’t much different.

        • I receive a Disability check due to a disability. I resent your remark. I refused to accept medicaid, only social security because I paid into that. The only reason I accept medicare is because insurance companies refuse to sell me any because of my existing condition. You better hope you never get sick because if you think you can pay for it yourself or your insurance company won’t drop you if you get too expensive for them you are kidding yourself.

      29. Note: I make no excuses for I was a deep-in-the-sleep sheeple; but~ having come from there to here can say that most folks are fed by the matrix and THEY reap what was sown with sick satisfaction. Sad fact, but a young lady I’m waking up stands absolutely aghast at the atrocities committed in the name of ‘all-is-well, THEY are smart and looking out for your best interest’. That was the biggest hurdle to get over. ‘I thought if I just voted for the “better” guy he would make everything unicorns and rainbows’. It’s call brain-washing and works very effectively.
Raised and fed on 24-7 ‘gotta have, or ELSE’ that we plugged our kids into (guilty, while not committing the resident folks). I stand ashamed because I was raised by folks that not only knew better, taught me better. Thankfully I have some background to fall back on.
Yes, we want to scream “WAKE UP”, and I’ve little sympathy for those who won’t, don’t, can’t. It’s been a long time since we were brought to our knees, but to our knees we WILL be found.
~..~ carry on while you can.

      30. I equate ‘the awaking’ to the same 5 stages of grief:
        1) Denial – ‘you are a fruit-cake, certifiable’
        2) Anger – ‘How did this happen, everything was going so swimmingly, WHO screwed this up – yep – it was THEM’
        3) Bargaining – ‘No worries, hee, hee, ahem, THEY will fix it, right? RIGHT, get out the vote… rah!’
        4) Depression – ‘Oh doctor, isn’t there a pill for this? I can see their lips move, but can’t hear what they are say’
        5) Acceptance – ‘I better get me rear in gear ‘cuz it’s not looking good for the home team…. hum, where to start, Gladys, get out here ~ we got some planning to do’.

Every human arrives at the train station at a different time, with an array of baggage and perspective on departure. Some will wait patiently because they know how it goes, others will rush in with the deer in the headlights panic; while most will wonder why they didn’t just stay home.
…Trail guide ~..~ ‘stay on the path, folks, there are dangers just beyond’.

        • @ WeeV.Yea,I grew up in the country and I’ve always heard that there are 3 kinds of people in the world. Those that watch what happens-those that wonders what happened-and those that makes things happen!! Guess I’ve been all three at one time or the other! BE ALERT!

      31. What very scary times we are living in ,anyone who cant smell or sense, something on the horizon is damn dumb!.ive done what i can and try to do more..im not to proud to say im getting scared.I love my God,and my he hear our prays and protect us all

        Nuff said.

        • I was raised differently…its on your plate you eat it and unless its bad(and it wasnt,Mom could cook) you wont get up till its gone…not that it was a problem,as kid I never had any problem eating everything on that plate and lookin for more…taught my kids the same way for the most part, and theyre now teaching theirs….I still dont waste food,I work hard to grow and prepare it,and if its store bought, sweat went into the fiat required to obtain it,leftovers get eaten and anything that gets passed that gets fed to the hogs/chickens and comes right back to the table in a different form, too many people dont have any sweat invested so they dont care…sad.

          • A lot of mine goes into the compost pile. Honestly, since I started composting, my garden has gotten better each and every year. No miracle grow here. I know what you mean about eating everything mom cooked. We used to have cooked or boiled potatoes on Sunday and whatever was left over she would fry up the next night. MM Good!

            • Cant beat compost for the garden and Moms fried taters for yer belly, good stuff!

          • REB…Talk about not wasting anything do you butcher your own hogs? Many families around here used to butcher at Thanksgiving. Not so many since about 20 years ago.We used every edible part of the hog.Skin and fat into the kettle for lard and cracklins. Organ and head meat into the scrapple kettle. Scrap pieces into the sausage stuffer.Of course you had your hams, shoulder roasts, bacon and pork chops.Sit around drinking and playing cards while the girls kept the kettles going. Sure miss those days. Now it seems the Amish are the only ones that butcher any more.

            • JRS…yessiree, Ilike to say we use everything ‘cept the “squeal” 😉 aint much left and the dog and chickens see to it thats used up…I try to butcher around the end of November so it comes close to Thanksgiving I guess, like to do one up in the fall and one in late spring if I have ’em,depends on how many chickens/turkeys/ducks ect that I have to get done around that time too,and if I get a chance some of the “kings beef” 😉 try to keep a few years ahead in canned meat as well as a few frozen items( I dont like to depend on a freezer or power so I can most of the meat and veggies)I work hard and I eat good, thanks to the good Lord and a good plan, like the Pastor said or infered…luck had nothing to do with it,hard work and a plan and a “Ican”attitude got it done, and I aint about to waste any of it…thanks! ‘Live free or die tryin”

      33. Political Corruption Surrounding September 11th, 2001
        by Brian Parent and Friends!

      34. That can’t right, Wall St is going great guns, every things Up, Spendings Up, Directors Pay Up, DOW’s Up, S&P 500 Up and Wages are still Low proving Inflation is at an all time low.

      35. When those in power rig the economy so that a disproportionate share of the wealth goes to the elite individuals, corporations, and politicians, it effectively steals from the rest of us.

This is what a slave system does, and the name of the current slave system is economic fascism, where elite individuals, corporations, and politicians conspire to pass laws that direct the wealth to themselves. One example is the banking cartel which enjoys the privilege of creating money out of thin air and then loaning this new money into circulation, effectively indenturing the public as they collect interest on these loans. Another example is the medical/drug cartel where government protects drug companies by making unapproved drugs illegal, and requires government issued licenses for medical professionals, effectively eliminating competition and allowing for monopoly pricing.

And after the federal and state governments create poverty as a result of their interfering in the free market, they then extract more wealth from the working public to support those living in the poverty government created. Government likes the system because it supports them and their friends lavishly, and it buys them votes from the gullible people on welfare who see politicians as their friends because they give them small handouts.

This is a corrupt system and can only end in failure and violent social unrest.

          I really miss Jessie Helms.

          • When Jesse Helms was a commentator on the Raleigh TV station, he said what he would do if he were in government. We voted him in and he did exactly what he said he would do for all those years. I think he was the only congressman you could rely on to vote the right way every time. We need more like him.

      37. I’m with you on keeping your freezer topped off. I even went as far as to buy another small freezer, to get prepped. It’s squirrel season and they’er are plenty of them down by the river.
Not only beef prices will be effected but ,all the livestock and poultry will. It is important to make the meat stretch as far as possible.I like the ideas I’ve read about using it in stew ,soup with potatoes ,rice ,beans etc.

      38. I am planning on bumper crops of potatoes and tomatoes.Since we had the high temps ,I dug and picked the good out of that, and replanted a couple weeks ago. If this fall is like last year I will still have 60+ days.I did the same thing last year and had good results. They can go till the first hard freeze.

        • secret societies jfk

The very word “secrecy” is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it’s in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know.

      43. cocopuff,

God is only absent from those that lock the door on him. For me, there is only one good book and that is the Holy Bible. If a man lives his life with the intention of being the best person that he can be and he believes in the word of God, then he will find true intervention from God when he is at his lowest point.

As man, we are born with the freedom to make our own choices in this life. Some will stray from the Lord and get lost in the quagmire of the consequences, some even blame God. God is always a breath away, a prayer away, an outreached hand away from us all. He is not an intruder, he must be welcomed and invited into our heart and soul in order to help us through times when counting on ourselves or others is not enough, as well as the good times. God is not a dictator and his rule is available for all to read, listen to, and live by. If I did not have God in my life, I would not be living, I would be a shell that is empty with nothing of substance to offer those who may want to count on me for guidance or compassion.

I never pray for God to give me material things or save me from my own mistakes, I pray for guidance and accept the outcome of what may be and see why it is always the right outcome in the long run. Having God in your life puts things into perspective when there is chaos and gives you peace of mind, knowing that you are never alone in your path on this earth.

          • cocopuff,

The people that I know and trust, would never succumb to brainwashing. Thanks for the heads up but this one world religion, will not ever be part of my beliefs. I speak to God through my own heart and soul, I do not require a congregation to enforce my commitment to the lord. Each will be judged separately and alone when the time comes. I never go along with the mentality of the group unless they believe what I believe. My religious beliefs are set in stone. It is the lonely and weak willed people that are susceptible to brainwashing, they are the ones that will be preyed upon, and that is very sad.

            • ~~~My religious beliefs are set in stone~~~

Mine are as simple as they come..”Do unto others as you would have them do unto you..and yours”

      44. I knew a crazy ass prepper couple years ago. They had very little cash, but they gardened and canned, fished and bought used things. They were happy and never hungery. They were my great-grandparents.

Another crazy couple of preppers were my grandparents. What cash they had went to keep the ranch running. When they sold cattle my grandfather usually bought silver bars, at around $3 an ounce. He had seen what happened during the depression. They shot and canned antelope, stored the canned meat in a root cellar.

Real nut jobs, right? They were the wisest, and happiest people I ever knew. I am trying very hard to learn the skills they had and become like them. These people who are without food now are like house dogs. They have forgotten how to take care of themselves, or more likely never learned how. I’m like a house dog that has jumped the fence, trying to follow my instincts to find my true nature so I can survive by the old ways.

Archery antelope season just started. I wandered back into an ancient draw yesterday where there was still water. Something caught my eye on the game trail I was on. It was the point of a native made arrow head. I was hardly the first archer to walk that draw.

Prepping isn’t new. Prepping is the natural way for men to live.

        • Its a tough road but its a good one(in my humble opinion)… the old folks knew so much thats been tossed aside by the people of today, theyre not totally at fault, they were shown/promised another way that wasnt so hard as our granfolks had to walk, but though man may change; this old world doesnt ever really change and under all the fluff and technology the law of the jungle still is very much in force, step outta line and itll get you!
I tend to lean towards the old ways/low tech…nothin wrong with hi-tech stuff if you like it and can keep it going but me I dont like anything I cant fix myself and with baling wire/cord and duct tape…then so much the better…regarding the arrow point you found, thats cool, I was plowing and disking up a couple acre spot that Id cleared over the years a couple weeks ago and saw a rock that wasnt a normal type of rock for this area,it was a hard smooth type whereas sandstone is most prevelant here…anyhow I picked it up and got to looking at it and realized it was a “pestal type of rock,it has several surfaces on it worn smooth grinding grain/berries and such, the Seneca peoples were in this area and as Im part Seneca I thought perhaps she was a distant forebear of mine, the lady who used that pestal probably daily to feed her family,so I understand that sentiment of knowing another walked this ground doing similar things(I raise my own native maizes(corns) and grind my own for my bread and animal feed)she would have done the same…she(and her people) ended up being replaced on this land by another people, thats the part of history I hope to avoid repeating,so to speak…anyhow you brought the thought back to my mind as I read your post…Good Hunting! “Live free or die trying”

      46. Critical thinking and doing without have been bred-out by design. This generation of brats could’nt save anything or do without if their lives depended on it. I’m in my 50’s and still sacrificing and saving and basically never buying anything for myself. Thats the only way to stay ahead. Not everything has to be brand new or the latest thing off the shelve. But as i said, these common sense things have been bred out through the years intentionally.

      47. K.Mc,

There are still many good kids around. Nothing is bred out of them, if the parents do their job right when raising their children.

What is it that you are sacrificing?

In a previous post of yours, you wanted to know (if the whites were enjoying all the decay). Are you bitter and frustrated?

      48. K.Mc,

Sorry, I forgot to add the word “guilty whites”, as you stated in your previous post.

      50. VRF,

        Awesome piece.

        Y’all Beware!

      51. Now is the time to stop paying the IRS, bankers, CEO’s, and politicians. It’s time to start using the money to help each-our neighbors. If entertainers, such as musicians and movie stars, don’t provide support-stop buying their stuff-no matter who or where they are. Stop all tithes to corrupt churches and put it in directly into the hands of the needy.

Drop off the radar, patronize cash-only/barter-only grocery and business owners, and help each other. Large swap meets, farmers markets, and garage sales will become the new Wal-Marts and strip malls.

The US government is thoroughly broken. It’s time to fix ourselves by ourselves. Cash it all out and set up new arrangements.

Then amend the constitution to allow for a maximum two-years for in office term limits. It would apply to for everyone from city to federal. No matter what.

        • @ Gracie-Wasn’t it the democrats who voted to set the term limit after Roosevelt won his 3rd term-weren’t they afraid if they could have 3-4 or 5 yrs in office, horrors-then so could the Republicans.
Since this administration is hell bent on shredding our Constitution, I believe they are planning on cashing out and resetting-didn’t the USSR do that and call it a collapse when it was a deliberate re-structuring?
Personally, after 4 yrs of trying to warn and educate my neighbors, while stocking my own pantry, I’m done with them. There’s no way in hell after being called crazy-uninformed-weird or simply being ignored that I would give them more than a baggie of oatmeal or rice.
And since we are the minority in our preparedness, that still leaves a whole lot of clueless people shopping at Walchina Mart.
Thanks to ICLEI, we have all these sustainable community initiatives taking away our rights, one wetland or garden (land restriction) at a time until they take away our right to vote.
Corrupt churches? Like the Wright church Obucky went to??

      52. Gerald Celente says “My Bones Tell Me This Thing Is Coming Down Fast”. In my opinion, he is totally correct. Glenn Beck says the “Big Reset” is coming. He is totally correct.

So is everyone else, listen to the experts, look at the warning signs – they are everywhere! Even evil Soros knows its happening.

I’ve been holding off on a few preps due to cost. No longer. They have been moved into hyper-drive. We need additional shelter at our retreat, we need food storage at our retreat (root cellar), we need a few cords of wood at our retreat, we need a small solar set up and we need a hand/manual water pump for our well at our retreat.

I’m getting off my butt this week and just spending the money. What good is it in the stupid bank!?!

In the Fall we’ll plant another 20 trees or so. Gotta get some fencing around our garden to keep the critters out (I guess we’ll just buy it & put it up if we have to).

We’ve got everything else (gold, guns, ammo & 2 years of food) – including mental preparation for what’s to come.

        God Speed everyone!

        • Mr B, good for you!! Saved money has no interest-return but saved money turned into personal investment provides yields that can be measured while giving you a better frame of mind.

It’s always smart to have extra fencing because you never know what might happen. We keep extra cattle panels around because they’re so handy. You can quickly construct a pen or corral — same would apply for a garden perimeter.

Plywood and 2x4s are also nice to keep on hand. In a pinch, they can ‘fix’ a broken window should an emergency arise.

      53. They’ll fight, if they want to eat.

      54. To everyone: I’m so grateful that I’m on the same page and same book with all of you. I’ve ALWAYS bought older cars for CASH; never had a car note in my whole life. Ever since Katrina, I’ve used whatever extra money I’ve had to get food, water purification, medical supplies, guns, ammo, etc; things I need to survive any adverse situation instead of useless items. There is a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE between preppers and non-preppers and that difference is the kind of influence we are under. When people are raised properly and learn what the world is really like, they will usually do the right things and will be just fine. When they get brainwashed with propaganda from any source, then that’s it, unless someone can get through to them or something happens to them to wake them up. Way too many people have no critical thinking skills; they just accept whatever they’re told as gospel without ever questioning anything. When TSHTF, we preppers willcome out on top; the nonpreppers won’t make it. It’s going to be a supreme tragedy. Take care and keep prepping.

      55. Can’t afford to eat, but you can afford an iPad?

Ohhhh brother. I may be able to help you in your dilemma however.
        ———————————-
        * HOW TO EAT AN IPAD *

        Ingredients:
        * Salt, sugar, flour, yeast, one iPad.

        Instructions:
        * Break apart iPad with sledge hammer. Throw away video screen (it is harmful when baked). Take broken circuit boards, CPU, memory cards, etc. Throw them in a pot of boiling water. Boil for 20 minutes, until metallic odor is gone.

Add salt, sugar, flour. Reduce heat, stir consistently for 30 minutes. Add yeast. Turn off heat. Just let the [expletive] bake under its own heat for 40 minutes. After 40 minutes…

Place pan of iPod mixture in convection oven. Cook for 30 minutes at 325 degrees Fahrenheit. When your iPod bread rises, it is ready to serve and eat!

Serving size: The whole d*mn neighborhood. We’re all hungry and broke here!

        • The people that can’t afford to eat can NOT afford IPADS. I am well paid, and I cant afford one (at least not cash with other items to be paid). You guys sound like surburban morons with no inkling of how poor people live if you think they are buying ipads. And MOST have prepaid phones when they can afford it (I rehab houses in low income areas, you guys are WAAAAY off the mark).

      56. In all reality, we have been our own worse enemy. We have demanded top pay, filed frivolous law suits, refuse to accept responsibility and want no accountability.

Had we subscribed to being self supportive all along, the country would not be where it is today.

How expensive could any product or service be if even half of society had the ability to generate, grow, or produce their own, whether it be clothing, food, or fuel.

I read about people shopping at thrift stores and buying bargains etc, but no sewing their own clothes, and only recently starting to can and preserve. I don’t have a single friend that when something goes wrong, they don’t go for the phone instead of the tool box.

I have always done my own electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, blacksmithing, gardening, hunting, fishing. What I can’t do which is major “mechanical work” I trade my services for when possible.

I’m not a simpleton, I have the house, 2.3 kids, college degree and held a full time job from the age of 15 up until the time of my retirement.

However, my lifestyle resulted in a lot of 20 hour days. The result being, I don’t owe any one shit and I can handle just about anything that can go wrong with anything.

It’s simply been a lifestyle that most would not subscribe to, yet I’m proud of the fact that I’m dependent on no man. Unfortunately, the day is coming when it won’t be a choice.

Iv’e not heard a single person talk about buying up hand tools and developing new skills. If money becomes worthless, Lowes and Home Depot just as well be a pet store when the window gets broken, or the front door falls off the hinges. Service calls will be non-existent.

There are hundreds of great ideas out there, but let’s address the basics first. Do you have the hand tools or materials put back or even the ability to build even the simplest of shelters if you had to? Can you make a heater out of a 55 gallon barrel? Fix your roof if it leaks? The hand tools to break down a tire and patch it or even a set of tire plugs?

I know that several now do, but for those just starting it’s still not to late to catch up. Lord knows you won’t need as much gold and silver put back if you have the skills and ability to be self supportive in ALL AREAS. There are hundreds of books available on these topics as well… buy some.

When you need a 2×4 buy 2. When you need a 1/4 pound of nails buy a pound as that could actually be the new currency! Iv’e been wet and cold and would have given all of the money I had to be warm and dry. Just a thought.

        • Cool story, bro. If you continue sitting at the computer doing nothing and repeat yourself enough times, it may come true,

      57. “Even as fierce ravening wolves that are feasting upon a horned stag which they have killed upon the mountains, and their jaws are red with blood–they go in a pack to lap water from the clear spring with their long thin tongues, and they reek of blood and slaughter. They know not what fear is, for it is hunger drives them–” Book XVI The Illiad, by HOMER

      58. I only own a cellphone, mostly to keep in contact with a job counselor. I am trying to get off SSI, but with the job market the way it is, that seems unlikely. I was once a skilled craftsman, but my disease kept me from doing my job and getting retrained for a new job , is well, just not working out so well. The jobs just arent there any more.

I can remember at one time, for every dollar spent in a town, it is spent 7 times more in the town. That is no longer true. It is spent maybe one time. Then shipped off to someplace else. Every job there is , creates others, the store you buy hardware from, has to hire stockkeepers, janitors, repairmen. But when people dont have the discretionary spending, the other jobs that go along with employment, just arent there and we enter a huge downward spirl. That sucking sound, is all the jobs, techonology , skills of the american workforce. You can thank the political parties for that.

I own an older car, do my own yard work, fix things as needed. My wife works.

But too many have the idea of I have mine, now get yours. Well, some of us had it all, and no longer do.

I think what really irritates a lot of people, is they know things arent fair , there is no level playing field. A lot of us dont have any sort of lobbyist working for us. We have no power, our vote is just worthless.

      59. What kind of idiot doesn’t know how to grow and/or hunt their food?
