Nothing is better than having bacon for breakfast. Or lunch. Or dinner. Except maybe using up the leftover grease! Here are a few SHTF and everyday uses for bacon grease that you may not have thought of!
If you’re a prepper, a homesteader, or just someone who is really frugal, you may wonder what you can do with versatile bacon grease other than just waste it.
- Bait a Trap – you can catch a raccoon or other small animal by baiting your trap with leftover bacon grease. Pour it into a small container and allow it to cool first. Then simply place the container in the trap and the scent will help attract those unwanted pests.
- Make a Candle – You don’t even have to strain out the bacon bits if you don’t want to! Simply pour the hot grease into a heat-tempered jar, such as an old mason jar or even an empty tin can. The grease will be very hot, so use caution to make sure you don’t get burned. Use some kind of a natural cotton or linen fiber for your wick such as a strip of T-shirt cotton string, or even a strand from a mophead. Tie one end to a pencil and lay the pencil over the top of your jar so the other end of the wick reaches down into the bottom of the hot bacon grease. As the grease cools, it will thicken and solidify. Once it’s solid, you can trim the wick so that it just sticks up over the top of the grease. This kind of candle works great for emergencies, but don’t forget: anytime you burn it, you’ll smell delicious bacon!
- Firestarter – bacon grease works wonders as a firestarter. If you need some help lighting a campfire, pour some bacon grease on a paper towel and toss it in your firepit. Light it up and stand back! It’ll get your fire going in a hurry. This is similar to the Vaseline trick (soaking cotton balls in Vaseline) to aid in starting a fire.
- Dog Treat – if you don’t need the bacon grease for anything else, let your dog have it! I scoop some dog chow into the bowl then pour the hot bacon grease all over it. Toss it around to coat all the kibble if you’d like. Make sure you keep the dog’s bowl out of his reach until the bacon grease cools! Once it’s cool enough, let your dog enjoy a tasty treat!
- Save it for Flavor – use it to make other survival foods if the SHTF. It’ll give you a lot of fat and flavor when you cook with bacon grease. Try adding it to rice and beans, soups and stews, or cook your meat in it. Food won’t be as bland if you cook with bacon grease.

I grew up in the South and I can remember my parents would always save the bacon grease and keep it in an empty coffee can in the refrigerator and they’d use it instead of cooking oil or Crisco when a meal called for greasing a skillet before cooking meat or whatever.
After leaving home, and finishing my time in the military – when I began living on my own, I did the same thing. That practice continued until I was about 27 or 28 and about that time, I started reading all sorts of scary stories in the news about the hazards of cholesterol and how frying food in animal fat like bacon grease would guarantee an early trip to heart disease and the grave yard. So, I stopped saving bacon grease and stopped using it altogether and switched to the healthier kinds of cooking oils. My father died of heart disease at a relatively young age of 65, and some say heart disease is sometimes a hereditary type of disease – but, I have not had any symptoms or issues and it might be due to my having avoided the same kind of dietary practices that my father engaged in during his life.
One thing I will say, though. Eggs have never tasted as good as they once did, when I’d fry or scramble them in a skillet with bacon grease. I still enjoy a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich – and once in a great while, I might go for a bacon cheeseburger, but I tend to avoid making a habit of eating fast food.
Here is question I have that I can’t figure out the answer to. Why is bacon so unbelievably expensive these days – while pork sausage tends to remain reasonably priced? Both come from the same hog, but it seems like the best quality bacon is almost so expensive that you’d need to take out a loan from the bank if you intend to eat it on a regular basis.

Back on the days I work on horse ranch, We would use a paint brush and put the bacon grease on there hoofs to keep them from cracking in the summer time. Also if a horse got a cut we would put it over the cut so the hair would grow and not leave a scar.
Bacon grease and dogs, not good. If your dog has simply licked a little bacon grease off the floor, he’ll be okay. However, bacon grease is too rich, fatty, and salty to feed your dog, and should be avoided. If your dog consumes too much bacon grease, your dog is at risk for pancreatitis which impacts her ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. – The dog people, Rover.com
