Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo has asked residents of his city to keep an eye on neighbors and family members after Larry Steven McQuilliams went on a shooting spree through the Texas Capitol last week.
McQuilliams, who held some extreme views and was reportedly targeting as many as 30 people, has been described by local police as a “homegrown extremist.”
In response to the shooting Acevedo has called on the Austin community to keep a watchful eye on people they know and to report any suspicious behavior to the police so that individuals, especially gun owners, can be vetted.
There are assuredly dangerous individuals in our society who have no qualms about killing innocent people, but could Acevedo’s request to citizens to say something if they see something be opening a Pandora’s box of government surveillance?
Let me tell you what keeps me up at night. It’s these guys. It’s these homegrown extremists that are lone wolfs, that are mad at the world, that are angry… That’s why it’s important for us as Americans to know our neighbors, to know our families.
Tell somebody.
If you know somebody that’s acting with a lot of hatred towards any particular group… especially if you know that somebody’s a gun enthusiast or is armed with these types of firearms and they’re showing any type of propensity for hatred… it doesn’t mean we’re going to go in and take them to jail… But we might want to vet these people.
Within the context of the Chief’s call to action it’s difficult to argue with reporting to police an individual who poses a danger to others around them – especially if the individual is fueled by rage and hate, has weapons in their possession and has made claims that they intend to injure or kill others.
But where is the line? If you give them an inch they will no doubt take a mile.
In California, Governor Jerry Brown has already signed a bill that gives police the authority to “vet” individuals and seize their firearms if a family member reports that they may be mentally unstable. No proof of the allegation is necessary.
And the Veterans Administration is feverishly working to ensure that any veteran who has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or even fails to pay their personal bills on time loses access to their right to bear arms.
So, while the actions of Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo are commendable and seemingly geared for protecting the general population, could this trend of seeing something and saying something lead to a complete breakdown of Constitutional protections?
As noted above, the government has already found loopholes, legal or not, that they say give them the authority to seize firearms from individuals who have been convicted of doing absolutely nothing. Moreover, law enforcement agencies have already stripped the Fourth Amendment, as evidenced by the almost daily reports of peoples’ doors being kicked and their homes searched without any sort of probable cause or on fabricated charges.
Are the police and other surveillance agencies going through a door that, once opened, can never be shut again? Are we creating a society where it’s patriotic to snitch on one’s neighbors? Could it potentially lead to what we’ve seen throughout history where even the innocent get “vetted” and detained for no other reason than having upset someone for a totally innocuous reason?
With over 1 million Americans now on No-Fly and Other Terror-related Watch Lists it should be clear that the “vetting” process is already in full swing.

OFF Topic: I am trying to make my car more secure. In a lawless environment, my car will be when I am most vulnerable. To car jacking and kid napping (I mean geriatric napping).
I am doing to additional thing…
1. I just bought master lock cuffs a and the cuffs with the cable. I plan on attaching both ends to to each door. That way when they approach the car. they try to open the door its locked, they smash the window and reach in to unlock it, they cannot because the doors are attached to each other by security cable that runs under the front seats.
Thoughts, ideas criticisms?!?
2. With respect to smashing the side windows, I want to have security film installed on the side windows so that they are much harder to break. I’m trying to find a place that does it. I don’t want to try it myself and mess up my car. Thoughts, ideas criticisms?!?

Genius, have you ever been SWATed? I have. I had a friend and his Dad living with me for a week before their tile job started and the kid spotted a guy who owed me a 100 bucks that I’d loaned to fix his car. My so called friend saw the guy and threatened him. Supposedly there was a pistol envolved although the i never saw a gun and the cops never found a weapon. The police response was overwhelming. No less than a dozen cops and 4 with M4 5.56 rifles.
Someone could have gotten killed. My dog nipped one of the cops ( even after I told them not to go near her ) and i was pleasantly surprised that the cop didn’t kill my dog who was on a 30 foot lead. In fact, i knew the cop and he just kind of brushed off the dog bite because it didn’t break the skin.
I allowed the cops to search my house ( my attorney wasn’t keen on this ) because there’s nothing in here that would indicate criminal activity and I know my 4th admendment rights. The top cop conducting his search told me to STFU several times even though i was acting in a calm and deliberate manner. The other three cops I personally know were embarrassed because of the sarge’s behavior and wouldn’t even look me in the eye until after he departed to harrass someone else.
Talking to one of the cops who kind of lingered after all the BS was over said the original person who filed the complaint said that I have an extensive gun collection and that the Sarge had done a NCIS ( I think that’s correct or Homeland Security check ). I didn’t verify or deny this important tid bit of information. Never, Never, never tell the cops or a lawyer anything. EVER. Be polite and respectful but don’t incriminate yourself. Just shut up.
Personally, I think the overwhelming police response was hyped up because of the reputation of our community ( which has gotten much better and lot’s less petty crime ) but there are some hardcore cops who have a hard on to shoot someone because they are now taught that everyone they come in contact with is out to kill them. I got this information from a 30 year cop veteran who I respect ( he also provided my CCW training ).
If you advocate this kind of crap perpetrated by our militarized local police then I feel sorry for you and hope you aren’t on the receiving end at some point in your life. To this day, I still feel violated by the cops. It is unsettling.
I do understand your wanting to turn the tables on certain elements of our society but we must be very careful. What you have advocated has no due process protocol and in our Defcon 5 alert levels that the police now employ, people will be killed.

Unfortunately, while moving, all of our firearms were lost when we crossed a dodgy bridge. The safe fell out onto the pavement, it was unsecured and all of the firearms tumbled far down into the very deep water. It was over a Federally protected Wilderness Area, so recovery is not allowed. Had to leave the safe on the roadway since my wife and I are still incapable of lifting anything that heavy. We are almost senior citizens.
I think I heard Al Sharpton say something that sounded a little deranged the other day.

I only see one problem with the door cuffs. You can’t get out either in case of fire. If they break out the window they will drag you out.
If you know you are going to be in that type of an area I would get a vehicle that you can turn into a tank. Put some type of covering like a heavy mesh screen over the windows so that a large rock or a hammer or a club can’t hit it. I would also get some run flat tires. Some type of protection for you motor top and front grill.
Damn this sounds like a lot of work. If you can stay away from places like this I would. Door locks I would go with some kind of cross bolt.
Now for the LoJack this just tell cops where you vehicle is at if it reported stolen. They will dump you car and be gone a long time before you report it. Vehicle are mostly stolen at night while you are sleeping, and reported when you get up in the morning.

Justice, everybody knows lojack can be disabled in less time than it takes the owner to get in and start the car.
As for cabling your doors together, I don’t recommend it.
For one thing, if you had to exit your car abruptly, say, because some thug was leaning in your newly busted passenger window with a knife swinging at you, you might rethink it.
What if they set your damned car on FIRE? A bomb in your back seat might be a good reason to carefully think things through.
Keeping a handgun within easy reach might be more prudent.

I have a friend who lives in downtown New Orleans. He bought a 5 year old chevy, gutted it, and made the inside as modern as he could get it with all the bells and whistles. He put a new motor under the hood and reworked the whole car. He put dark windows in it so you could not see in. He has to park this particular car on the street. He did nothing on the outside but paint the car with primer. Outwardly it looks like an older badly painted Chevy. He said he has never had a problem with anyone fooling with it. He said it is not flashy or even inviting but he would not be afraid to drive it around the world if need be. The criminals do not give it a second look.
If you cannot carry, a K-Bar type knife is quite effective. My CRKT Kangee Hawk is even better. It is edged across the top – perfect for smashing through an open window into the face of a would-be assailant. The best defense is a good offense.

@ Justice : First thing get a truck. If TSHTF, you are not going to run to town and find/buy supplies. The shelves will be empty.The only place you are going in a vehicle is possibly to your BOL, or head for the hills/woods. A car is not going to cut it.
Second thing, don’t put yourself in the position to get jacked. Most of the time you will be able to see it coming ( road block, mass crowd, somebody pretending to be dead or hurt in the street ).
Third thing, here in Florida, they have window film for your house. It is for hurricanes. Nothing will make your windows harder to break, but it will keep them together afterward. A vehicle window does not break like on TV. It is not that easy. You gotta hit it hard or have a punch. If your window gets shot out, a cable lock is not going to stop anything.
Forth thing, If you do get in that position, STEP on the gas of your TRUCK.
Last, throw the lojack stickers away. If you need stickers, they need to say NRA, or keep honking, I’m reloading. In a real event, ain’t nobody going to care about lo or hi jack. Their might not be any power anyways.
If you can’t afford a truck or a second vehicle, buy a cheap, no title 4×4 and park it in the garage and start working on it. Install points ignition, or get an old style diesel. Not electronic. You can buy an untitled ( not stolen ) truck for a few hundred dollars. Consider it an invaluable Prep. Depending on your location, maybe consider an enduro, dirt bike, or a Rokon.

I live in the South and never have trouble with the police. I am white but it seems to me that southern cops are not as bad about infringing on rights as other areas. So much for the cop portrayed by the movies of the southern policeman; mirror sunglasses, overweight, and calling blacks…’boys’. The South still has a love for the constitution….even the cops.
The ONLY laws that must be obeyed are the laws of physics. All other laws, written by man, are optional.

I grew up liking our country. I’m a vet. Now I’m not so crazy about America anymore.
My family has served in every war our country has ever fought, including the revolutionary war, and has a private cemetery for just fallen heroes in war. Unfortunately I have a lot of relatives in that cemetery, but I was raised to believe they died fighting for freedom and liberty.
Even if you ignore that almost half the graves are from the war for Southern independence, which I don’t, it’s hard not to feel they died for nothing these days. I hate the government of Lincoln and will never disarm.

Anyone that gets a permit is naive as hell. Buy from a friend with no record of the sale. I don’t need their permission and I sure as hell aint paying them for it. Take a look at NY state for proof about pistol permits.
Shoot, not only is Idaho gun friendly, even I was surprised when my first two purchases (a Remington 875 20ga for one of the kids, and a ruger 10/22 takedown for one of her younger sisters) were not just completed on the spot, but I wasn’t given a bag or a box for the shotgun. I just walked out with the 10/22 box under one arm and the shotgun over the other shoulder. It was surreal as I walked several blocks to my car and no one even looked at me weird. I walked past a mom loading kids in a mini van, who just smiled, lots of store fronts, a man getting money at an atm in front of a bank, and no one even looked twice as I openly carried a shotgun through town. No one called the cops, no one even looked nervous, and probably no one really even thought twice about it.

Oh and open carry is legal everywhere here (no permit needed, even for a full auto with noise suppressor as long as it’s open carry; though the feds disagree) and concealed is legal outside town limits. Permits are only needed for concealed in town limits. Of course I disagree with the concept of permits but here is pretty close to right on this.
I agree that I don’t need permission to exercise my rights, though I will concede that Idaho’s permits are cheap, easy to get, and the enhanced ones are even good on school campuses.

Obamas called for a review of the “militarization” of all police departments, while he directs his DHS to provide military equipment and training to said police. They will call for every department at every level to fall under the guidance of DHS, giving him his “centralized” control.

Well, these are my preferences which is only a wish list:
#1. Morality. With all the “shoulds” and “oughts” and teaching and enforcement etc. Of course, that’s gonna raise a huge and unending hoot and a holler, but you gotta start someplace, and that’s mine. More specifics, you say? Okay, Judeo-Christian morality. I didn’t say theocracy. I said Judeo-Christian morality which undergirds our U.S. Constitution.
#2. All folks, not just minority folks: Stronger, closer married one-dad, one-mom families raising kids or adopted kids. Two gays want to live in civil union together or two lesbians want to live in civil union together? Fine. No to homosexuals adopting kids. Buy a dog or cat instead.
#3. The number one killer of blacks in America is abortion. Stop the abortion holocaust.
#4. Law enforcement to courageously stop looters, arsonists, and rioters with the force needed.
#5. Law enforcement and the Military to disobey and mutiny against the Lawless Lawbreaker Obama if he should order them to do something harmful, like carry out Martial Law because of something he and his inner circle engineered.
Of course, #1-5 aren’t going to happen. Well except maybe #4.

Police – Arrest looters. Citizens exercise your rights to protect you and yours. Don’t rely on LEO. Put pressure on all LEOs to protect citizens’ constitutional rights (that is their job correct?). Enforce laws equally for everybody. Underprivileged Black citizens get treated the same as everyone else, not gunned down in the streets, not let off the hook for looting, and do not ignore black on white hate crimes. Police breaking the law go before a judge and jury.

I don’t want to sound as if I know for a certainty what happened at Sandy Hook. I don’t. All I know is that there appear to be some serious discrepancies about the story, in toto, and certainly Halbig seems to be on to something. Now, it could be that the kids were killed by a second shooter. Maybe this poor Lanza youth used another type of firearm, and the scam was “merely” to try to stigmatize AR-15s. Could be any one of a thousand other permutations. I really need to do a LOT more investigation into this, so I am open to others weighing in. All I can say for certain is that there something abnormal going on – whether it is something more “minor” or not, I don’t know, and I don’t want to give the impression that I know something I don’t (which I’m afraid I have done!). I do know that my neighbor and good friend is a former Marine sharpshooter and senior IL. state trooper, who used to manage buying equipment for them. He’s no babe in the woods. I was off and watched the “live feed” of news that day. They cut between a chopper camera and a reporter. The chopper showed a huge dark blood like puddle on the front step of the school but the reporter said everyone was shot inside the school. The coroner stated that everyone was shot with a rifle but the reporter said that the shooter only hand handguns on him. The chopper camera showed the shooters’ car as the police approached it, went through it and then pried open the trunk and took out the rifle. The chopper showed no kids at the school but did show many milling around and around at the firehouse up the hill. That was really odd. If I reached my child after a near death experience I would not be wandering around a parking lot! I would take my child home. And in one chopper shot you could see groups of people go in one door, out the other side of the building and back in another door and come back out on the front side again. Talk about weird behavior if they were acting on their own.
I also saw the “dad” talking and laughing when he thought he was off camera. When his name was called he screwed up his face and tried to look very upset as he stepped to the microphone to speak. The next morning “family members” were on Good Morning America and they were happily speaking about their dearly beloved lost 6 year old as if the child was in the next room. Clearly they enjoyed the TV experience and were NOT grieving anyone.
Based on the Sandy Hook and Boston Marathon I would not give those people the name “actors” because they are pretty bad. A good follow up on the $1.oo house issue is to ask how many sold their “homes” once the Sandy Hook business was done?

Rockmanr, if I were a vet, I would tell the VA to go f#$% themselves and bring it on if they think they’re bad enough. They don’t have a leg to stand on with their attitudes toward the vets. The vets in my family don’t go to the VA for anything. They know better.
All I got is a rusty old single-shot .22, half a box of .22 shorts, 1 can of Spam, 1 can of beans, and a dozen or so bottles of water…the rest I lost in a boating accident.

Funny, same thing happened to me. By boating accident occurred in my bathtub, but it was still tragic and I lost everything.

My church has a Sam’s membership, so we use that card to get in and pay with cash. I have a Food Lion card in someone else’s name. Also I pretend not to have mine and use the clerk’s card. Sometimes I lend it to someone in front of me in line who doesn’t have one. That really mixes up the computers.
I have fun with the cards. You can too.
I have a couple of store (cards) and all I did was say “I will fill this out and bring it in next time”. I have used them for years with no questions lol. Copperhead, I just bought myself another gun today and picking up extra mags and ammo on Sat, then sun. off to the range to try it out. gun show in my area Dec. 13-14 which I will also attend. With Dec. 24 looming on that UN treaty it could be the last gun show I’ll ever see.

Some retard thought he was a gunsmith. I’m not, I’m just not an idiot. I pulled the action, adjusted the trigger like it should have been. Been fine ever since. I have four other 700s in various calibers, all subject to the recall, none of them registered to me (Yeah, I live in one of those states). This is why they are recalling them. They’re refitting them with triggers that can’t be adjusted infinitively lite. Now, when I buy a 700, I just automatically pull the trigger mech, hose it down with WD40, then readjust it.

word from western Indiana…not sur about other states but in indiana no permit of any kind needed to carry a black powder revolver my dad passed away 6 month ago and hr had a 44 6shot black powder he carried in the car any time he went any where never had or needed a permit it had been loaded for i know 20 years and what he used to prevent the 2 chambers from firing that happens some times if you do not put a smear of grease over the top of the ball he used the wax from a toilet ring soft bees wax so i took it out in the back yard to unload it and clean it and it fired just as if i had just loaded it even the caps had been on for 20 yrs i was amazed and thought for sure at least half of the chambers would not fire but not a hickup

I think this guy is half right in the sense that we’ve failed to be the engaged society that’s required for our form of government to work.
It’s too late now, the genie is out of the bottle, but we’ve developed into a ‘let them handle it’ society, abdicating our responsibilities, in many cases, when it comes to nearly every facet of governing. They get away with all of this because we have allowed it via our own complacence.
We want to stand up and shake our fists and rage against it but that’s like buying a pistol after you’ve been robbed. What we really need to do is get involved at every level, from the school board and local town meetings on up. The opposition has been doing this for years, you have to admire their dedication to getting what they want, let’s not get pissed, let’s get even.
