Once People Doubt the Legitimacy of Our Government, It’s Over

Porter Stansberry, in the S & A Digest, warns that the turning point in America will come when the people realize that their government is corrupt and illegitimate.

    That day is rapidly approaching.

    Via The Daily Crux:

…remember this: Our State, as powerful as it is, relies on an assumption that’s made collectively by millions of Americans.

We must believe the people we saw on TV [Tuesday night’s State of the Union] are fundamentally good and honest people. We must never come to doubt the character of those people or the process they used to gain power.

If that happens, our State, even though it’s the most powerful in the world, could quickly collapse. It is nothing without the consent of the governed. And our consent depends entirely on its legitimacy.

I believe our government is in imminent danger of losing its legitimacy. Why?

Our federal government is bankrupt and threatening to bankrupt several generations of Americans. At some point – one that is rapidly approaching –Americans will repudiate these debts and the legitimacy of the government that incurred them.

Unaffordable foreign debts and the obvious perfidy of “quantitative easing” will soon render our currency worthless. It is a shame upon the honor of our country that we would even consider using the printing press to finance our debts… It is a high crime that we have done so. The world will long remember the way we have treated our creditors.

Over the last 50 years, the government became a socialist tool. It steals assets from responsible, hard-working citizens and distributes them to others, mainly on the basis of political patronage. At some point, these policies become self-destructive. So many people end up on the dole, the government has no way to finance their needs. We have reached that point. Today, more than half of all voters pay zero federal income taxes.

Our aggressive foreign policy has created billions of enemies overseas while propping up regimes that would disgust most Americans – like the Saudis.

Most critically… our government is for sale. As the price of influence in Washington continues to escalate, it will become impossible to deny the patently obvious truth: Government policy is awarded to the highest bidder and our “free” elections are essentially rigged by the massive sums spent on advertising for candidates.

While I look forward to the day my fellow citizens begin to see their government as it really is, I also fear that day for it will surely mark the beginning of an “interesting” moment in history.

It will, indeed, be an interesting moment in history if (when?) it happens. One that will likely be written about for decades and centuries to come.

The governments of Iceland, Greece, Hungary, Tunisia, Algeria, and now Egypt have all lost credibility and legitimacy with their people, and recent reports suggest that Egypt is turning into a war zone. Does the same fate await the streets of America?

      3. Not yet guys… not yet.

I could use any extra time afforded to me anyway.

      4. well if the title of this is true..its been “Over” as far as i have been concerened for the past 30+ years..
maybe it just took this long for them to get it?

      5. The poor in this country that will be the most likely to take to the streets and riot have been dooped.  They think the government is going to continue to give them handouts from the working class as if they are entitled to them just because they exist here in the great old USA.  Well inflation is going to bite them in the ass and they have nobody to blame other than themselves.  While you voted in these scumbags in our government that promised to give you whatever you wanted they are the very same ones that will yank the carpet out from underneath you.  Congrats!  You helped screw us all.

      6. Agree with you Steve.  I forget her name, but it was during Obama’s campaign when that stupid woman said that she “don’t have to worry about paying my mortgage, or putting gas in gas car, or food on my table” etc…..  It was a pretty famous clip.  That is the type of mentality, the thinking of the sheeple, that voted us into this mess.

      7. Oil & silver up for the day.

      8. I would dispute part of that title.  Yes people must believe in the legitimacy of the government but the people have never seen politicians or the government as faultless.  It is “over” when the people no longer believe that the CONCEPT that started this nation is possible with this government. The people must give up hope that this government can be salvaged and returned to what our founding fathers envisioned.
Of course the founding fathers said that freedom must be guarded. They were not just speaking of soldiers going to war but of citizens standing up for truth and honesty and damanding these same traits from those who would claim to be civil servants. Politicians seem to have forgotten that they are hired to serve this nation, not special interests. Corruption will always exist when money is present.  It is the citizens who must watch what is going on and demand an accounting. And politicians who do not SERVE this nation should be ousted but instead they are re-elected.  Why? Because everyone wants THEIR freebie or pork. The citizens are not blameless unless they remove from office, politicians who become profiteers.

WTF!! It’s over, over, over.  Obumma and his regime are fundamentally good and honest people?  You’re shittin me.  I’ve doubted our government ever since I started paying attention to it 50+ years ago, and the end game is finally here.  There’s no getting out of this unscathed.  Stick a fork in us, we are done.

      12. “WTF!! It’s over, over, over.  Obumma and his regime are fundamentally good and honest people?  ”

He wasn’t saying they are, he is giving an example of who/when they need to be trusted.

      13. It is coming close to being over. The entire system is corrupt. When you have Congressmen who don’t write the bills or read the bills, then you have a completely corrupt system. The Supreme Court decides whatever cases it wants and rules as they please, no necessarily according to the Constitution. The President starts wars with Congressional consent, but without any actual declaration of war.   Congress ran up the $14 trillion dollar, the people didn’t. So, why should the people sacrifice anything?  $2.5 trillion missing from the Pentagon according to Donald Rumsfeld on Sept. 10th, 2001 and no investigation. Trillions stolen during the bailout and no one arrested or gone to jail. The corruption that goes on in the US makes other dictators look like shoe shine boys.

      14. The socialist government of Iceland has not lost credibility and legitimacy with their people.
I admire the Icelanders for taking it one step further and abolishing their “private” federal reserve and taking money creation back into their government structure. The head of the Icelandic federal reserve refused to step down so they fired his arrogant ass and abolished his private cartel. It has been about two years of hardship since then. Unlike the US, the Icelandic people took their medicine and are far better off for not having to pay off gambling debts that they didn’t generate and wouldn’t have profited from.
Iceland did temporarily lose credibility with foreign banks when they refused an offer of “no strings attached” taking-on of private debts, foisted on the public debt. Something Bush-the-Moron was glad to do for his banking cronies.
In stark contrast, the Obama admin has now recovered a vast proportion of the bailout funds lent, not given, to the banksters.
Responsibility to the interests and welfare of the people are the hallmark of legitimate government.
Unnecessary foreign wars, unconscienceable transfer payments for those “too connected to fail” and policies that allow rigged elections are the hallmarks of republican policies.

      15. Idiots.  The U.S. government is a fraud.  And so is Barack Obama.  Neither is in power based on the U.S. Constitution.  The
U.S. government is a criminal syndicate to support the elite.  Obama is a CIA mole whose real goal is to bring the people of this country under a world government.  Obama is enemy #1 of the citizens of this country and the U.S. Constitution.

      16. “the turning point in America will come when the people realize that their government is corrupt and illegitimate”

There MUST be an additional catalyst beyond this, such as an economic stressor. The citizenry doesn’t much care if a political system is illegitimate. In the case of the US, we have a country ruled by an elite who has dwindling national allegiance (aka “Davos Man”). This elite is only concerned with disparity of wealth after the point is reached where it causes destabilization. Until then, the wage slaves will continue to produce. AFTER that, the wage slaves refuse to perform, or monkey-wrenches the machinery of their own slavery.  The evolving issue in the States at the moment (as I see it) is that, due to the theory of the “social contract”, the American citizen, who bailed out the banking establishment (and it fact the entire economy), IS owed something for that. The debts will be paid by the people through increased taxes and currency debasement (inflation). What do the American people receive in payment to offset this sacrifice?

      17. Actually, what people keep calling the US Government is a corporation formed around 1871. This corporation went bankrupt in 1933 and was taken over by it’s creditors. Sooo, United States is really a foreign owned corporation. Research it. It’s all out there. Find out what your name in ALL CAPS means.
        Wake up—-wake up more.

      18. Steve said: “Well inflation is going to bite them in the ass and they have nobody to blame other than themselves.  While you voted in these scumbags in our government that promised to give you whatever you wanted they are the very same ones that will yank the carpet out from underneath you.  Congrats!  You helped screw us all.”

In my view, there is incorrect assumption embedded within. You are assuming that the system of voting is legitimate, and if people would just make better decisions about their political representatives, then we would end up with proper leaders in government. Here’s the way elections ACTUALLY work. Candidates are pre-selected by elite using various filtering mechanisms (membership in certain organizations, being “blessed” by the proper think-tanks, getting a thumbs-up from the global establishment, etc). Those pre-selected candidates are then offered to the citizenry, who then perform a “voting” ritual in order to legitimize their position. If you control the choices, you can control the outcome. Have you ever wondered why it seems that no matter who becomes president, nothing changes? THAT’S WHY. Representative democracy is simply a device used to secure buy-in by the fool public for continued rule by the elite. It creates an illusion of inclusion.

      19. It’s already happening in the U.S.
Thomas Jefferson’s way to Opt Out seems to be picking up some steam, especially in states like Idaho:

I look forward to the day my fellow citizens begin to see their government as it really is, and it might not be a bad thing to experience, it might even be pleasant. Perhaps it just depends on the approach and the resolve?

      20. I woke up to reality during the GW Bush administration. Not that there weren’t already a plethora of valid reasons to doubt the legitimacy of our government BEFORE him.  But ol’ Georgie Porgie ran over the U.S. Constitution & rule of law in such a blatantly roughshod manner that he completely ANNIHILATED any miserable leftover shreds of credibility & legitimacy that the U.S. government might have still possessed up to that moment.

Campaigning on promises of “change you can believe in”, his replacement (a virtually unknown ‘community-organizer’ hailing from the most politically corrupt city in America) is so BRAZENLY corrupt and subservient to the will of Goldman Sachs & Monsanto et el, it’s not even funny anymore like when we had the Retard.

Legitimacy? Who KNOWS in what dark, decrepit cave these insolent BAST@RDS were conceived in.

      21. That day is rapidly approaching?

That day has been here for years IMO.

I don’t remember every word spoken at the St. Louis Tea Party rally…but one speaker said she had gone to Washington to several meetings and it was hard to explain to us how the legislators and congress lived..the way they lived..their lifestyles, etc…that we are mere peons to them.

So much is written about the wasted funds and tax dollars on entitlement programs…has anyone thought about the billions of our tax dollars given to other countries??

        This to must stop.

      23. @RememberRTC – You may wish to leave America.  It was not founded as a welfare state.  You took care of yourself within the few laws established and helped out your neighbors.  The government was not their to catch you when you fell.  If you want that move to a socialist state.  I moved from one to America to get away from that BS.  My money, I spend it how I want.

@Paul Revere – You’re the type of person that make people on these forums seem like nut jobs.  Wow.  CIA mole huh.   Didn’t even know he was in the CIA.  Neat!  But since the CIA operates outside the US borders (by law, I cannot say they always adhere) what was his job?  To spy for some 3rd world country?

You might want to investigate his rantings …more learned scholars than PR are saying these things.  There are many blogs presenting these facts.

      26. The new majority does not care what the Founding Fathers intent for this country was. They do not care about the deficit. They do not care about inflation, deflation, stagflation, or any other form of debasement of the currency. They do not care about jobs any more because it is now more profitable to simply draw unemployment benefits forever (probably) or go on welfare. They do not care about the hundreds of billions in taxpayer funds that support those programs; plus foreign aid, (free) healthcare, wars and rumors of wars, corporate favors, bailouts, handouts, sellouts, or hundreds of hidden subsidies both here and abroad, just to name a few. They do not care about the Constitution, after all it’s just a G.D. piece of paper. They do not care about morality, Justice, or God above. So do you honestly believe that they give two shits about the legitimacy of the Government?? No, they do not. They do not even entertain such notions. The new majority is quite content with things just the way they are. When the free shit stops there will be Hell to pay, but make no mistake, a return to all that is good and just is not what this country wants anymore. We need two Americas.

      27. I agree with Stansberry; he’s actually always been very perceptive.  I wish that I could agree with him that there might be a 2nd American Revolution.  But for the last 40 years public education has gone down hill to the point where in many localities, less than 50% graduate high school, and the ones that do are totally deficient in math and reading skills.  Further, this was all planned by the Progressives who used the unions to gain total control over schools.  The Howard Zinn history text, taught in far too many high schools had an overall thesis that America was inherently evil and that wealth distribution and social justice were the only methods to cure the ills.  The indoctrination was insidious.  Thus, we have produced a welfare entitlement society; we cannot count on those who worship  government largess to help.  The rest of us are a distinct minority, and getting more so every year.

      28. @Mike L – Welcome to America.
One thing you’ll learn, after you have been here for awhile, is we feel free to adopt ideas from around the globe. Whether they come from Iceland or anywhere else. Yours included. We even entertain free market ideas from otherwise socially progressive people.
My point is that in America the Federal Reserve has not always been run by a banking cartel. It has been a government function before and could be again. Some would say our constitution demands it (see; Article I, Section 10).
My comments refer to corrupt politicians and corporate welfare schemes that saddle taxpayers with bank gambling debts.
Just trying to let you keep your hard won money so you can “spend it how you like” and not let it be diverted to pay off politically connected oligarchs. Something you may be familiar with from the “old country”.

      29. @ Paul Revere,

There are many foreign citizens on the U.S. CIA payroll.
        .
Major port of entry to the U.S. are also controlled by foreign country.

      30. President Obama’s statement on the situation in Egypt:

The people of Egypt have rights that are universal. That includes the right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to free speech, and the ability to determine their own destiny. These are human rights. And the United States will stand up for them everywhere.

I also call upon the Egyptian government to reverse the actions that they’ve taken to….
        .
…interfere with access to the Internet, to cell phone service and to social networks that do so much to connect people in the 21st century.
        .
At the same time, those protesting in the streets have a responsibility to express themselves peacefully. Violence and destruction will not lead to the reforms that they seek …..”

      31. Corporate controlled Government speaking the same old political hogwash  and makeing promises they never plan to keep . the whole thign is one big ass lie to keep those in political power and to keep thier institutions going for more  profit (Wallstreet) . People will realise in  less than 5 years  from now when they lost almost everythign  they own .Kiss thier good paying job bye-bye.Lose thier home and live in a crappy apartment . Sell all of your toys like dirtbikes, quads, boats , etc. Cash in your gold and jemelry  and then off of a Government offering of foodstamps  and handouts .  1/2 the population in the next 5 years may be exactly at that point . When you drive by on your main drag in your local city  or town and you dont see people lined up out the door at Taho Joes,The Outback, Cool hand lukes, and other popular Restaurants then you its allready here . Then the countdown applys !!!!

      32. Meanwhile back at the Ranch, Obama and CO still seek to control our free speech, wish to implement a kill switch for the internet, will probably pull an executive abridgment of our 2nd amendment rights within the next two weeks, and has determined that the minority of Americans are terrorists. Let’s get our own house in order Barry before you ship any more of our money and our fine service men and women to another desolate wasteland filled with anti-American Muslims.

      33. “Violence and destruction will not lead to the reforms that they seek …..”

Funny how governments suddenly turn against violence once it’s being used against them. Violence and destruction are EXACTLY what Obama was in favor of as a solution to the Afghan quagmire.  I guess it’s some quantum physics mystery that violence works so well when the bomb has an American flag painted on it, but not when it’s coming from people.

      34. I think the “sheeple are going to wake up, and they will be pissed.

“Every generation needs a new revolution.”Thomas Jefferson

      36. All the above comments are at the very least partly true.
However,in my humble opinion I suspect that we may have about 5-10 years left before the worst parts of the collapse truly starts to happen. It’s in a slow-motion crash mode that seems impossible to reverse(think tall tree that’s started falling.)Corporations(and the top 5% UBER Rich) that hide their wealth offshore, pay their top level execs obscene amounts of pay(even when they LOSE money),mess with our foodstuffs via GMO plants w\o any honest studies as how it REALLY affects you and me(and our children’s health) and are allowed to “donate” funds to the folks in D.C.The FDA and the dept. of AG. are both stuffed with people from the same Corp.s that they are suppose to regulate! How very droll of Mr. Obama and the Repocrats!(by the way, thank-you Mr.Bush for letting BP skate on the devices to prevent the Gulf Oil Spill! AND thank-you Mr.Obama for letting them off the hook for a FRACTION of what the cost will amount to clean the mess up!)We STILL(“mission accomplished!” MR. Bush said) have wars of occupation(we have managed to kill off about 25-30% of the people in Iran while we were at it)that “accomplished” little but resulted in the killing and maiming thousands of American young men with nothing to show for it!(remember a place called Viet Nam?)Big Bankers and Institutional Stockbrokers and their Ilk have(and still do) taken huge bets(and manipulated the market) against the very people and retirement pension funds they supposed to care for to their own enrichment.(thank-you Goldieman-Saksies!!!!)
Athens,Greece was the first Democracy the world had ever seen and they managed to finally ruin it in the same basic way just as FUBAR then as is happening now(just in a smaller scale).
Rome did it too!(the very same way,it just took longer;-) )
        What can be done?
In the long term I expect that we will see a Federal Government slowly become less and less meaningful as people decide to look locally to have some form of governance that can be trusted. Not a happy time for most Americans, yet it must happen.
sorry if this seems a little too long,
        Sincerely,GFG

      37. RememberRTC,
In two years, your messiah hasn’t undone A SINGLE THING, President Bush did, nor is he showing signs of doing so.  Meet the new boss, even WORSE than the old boss.  Many of us knew he was a fraud BEFORE the selection.

      38. ^^Even worse, because Obama seems not to act as the ignorant barbarian before him, by NOT undoing things he creating a certain legitimacy to them. OF COURSE there are real factors involved that make it difficult to undo the crimes of the Bush junta. You can’t release Gitmo prisoners because their later CNN interviews would only further prove that in fact, yes, America DOES torture. And for the same reason you also cannot try these people in court. But ignoring the mess will not cause it all to go away.  No good solution really. Obama’s job is to advance the Empire, not to apologize for its crimes.

      39. So, everyone here has already read Etienne de la Boetie’s Discourse onVoluntary Servitude, right?

        http://www.constitution.org/la_boetie/serv_vol.htm

There’s an important vague point in his text: He addresses a group of oppressed peasants, and says, “You will all be free if you only resolve to withdraw support from government.”  The trick is that a lot of times, there’s one isolated individual who wants to be free, but he’s got no support from others.

      40. Dboy, You have very little life experiences.

      41. Comments….. In any given country, when the army sides with the rioters, it`s all over for their gov`t. Been there …,…. .

In the long term I expect that we will see a Federal Government slowly become less and less meaningful as people decide to look locally to have some form of governance that can be trusted.

Yes, GFG. governing on a national level lacks oversight…whereas, local officials illicit and corrupt spending are more recognizable and obvious at community leveled oversight.

      43. “OF COURSE there are real factors involved that make it difficult to undo the crimes of the Bush junta. You can’t release Gitmo prisoners ” ~ He COULD have repealed the Patriot Act INSTEAD of extending and ADDING to it.   That one item alone, would have a huge positive impact.  Also, I remember Leftists bitching about Bush’s ‘czars’.   Okay,  fair enough, shadow government has no place in the USA.  So why does the current occupant of the oval office have several DOZEN czars all will dubious backgrounds?  Bush had, what less than a dozen?  Two years into Hope-N-Change has done nothing to convince me I was wrong about what’s going on in the USA.

      44. GrayFoxGreen said: “In the long term I expect that we will see a Federal Government slowly become less and less meaningful as people decide to look locally to have some form of governance that can be trusted”

I agree with this,  but I do not think this will be a positive development. Consider the anti-democratic taint within the EU. Control is abstracted to a level where a remote group of elite bankers and politicians are making real rules (you really can’t call them laws, as they have no legitimacy) without regard to the wishes of the population.   The US Congress is the only mechanism that Americans have to influence government. If that is abstracted to international bodies (which it IS already, that’s why the government no longer responds to the will of the people) then “localism” movements will have little if any ability to accomplish anything. What we need is a *combination* of localist movements working together with global citizen movements,  in order to counter the forces of globalist corporations and their agenda.

      45. Too late.  Many Americans view our govt as illegitimate.

This is the reality that Americans need to wake up to. Unfortunately the sheeple are still high on the past greatness of our country. They have no idea it’s over.
I hope this turns out ok for those of us capable of thinking for ourselves. For those of us who are aware of the perversion of Man’s Law (Jesus, anybody?). We are up against a very ancient, powerful machine.
My kids are 3 and 1. My husband is getting armed to the teeth. We are stockpiling as much as we can, pm’s included. Will this all be worth it? Will we survive? Will there be an America worth giving to our children?

If anyone wants to REALLY understand what is going on, read back up the line what Bildo said.

Bildo, welcome to the brotherhood! We can never reclaim our government until we realize that what we have now is not our government at all. The rump congress was never disbanded.

We have here the greatest fraud ever perpetrated on the world and if we are ever to fix this, we must understand it.

        http://gotfr.com/confessions.html will get you started.

      50. Just a few thoughts….
I’m guessing that many people (esp. those as of late who have been ripped-off by the Mortgage refinance run by the FEDS and the Bankers)are beginning to get the “Big Picture”(some of us still remember that show on TV).The media are already trying to condition us to believe the States reneging on their retired employees’ pension funds are a good idea.No doubt the tax cuts that the FEDS(One can no-longer say there’s any substantive difference between the parties)would if reversed, more than make up the “entitlements”(gotta love their make-believe terms)cost that the FEDS complain about. If they just didn’t build 5 multi-billion planes, education for all would be well funded for years.Remove the troops from Europe and Africa, and behold! SSI could be fully funded well past when we all are dust.Put up strict import tariffs, and guess what?ALL those jobs moved overseas(China,et al) would come rushing back.I don’t know any self respecting person who WANTS to be on welfare(I do know some who CAN’T find a job that pays the Rent, much less afford a small home(under 1200 S.F.).
The SHTF will start will Joe nobody can’t get the welfare to feed his family(and yes, there are more than a few slackers on the dole too).
The weather it is said starts in Africa. What we see there now will happen here Unless the FEDS realize that you cannot pander to the top 2-5% and say “let them eat cake” to the rest of us.When the French people in Paris had enough they started the Revolution and and didn’t care if you were man, woman or child of you were a part of the ruling class(and they were pretty wide open on who they thought made up the Rich)that’s why it was called the TERROR.
I feel for anyone who has small kids at this moment in history. There are truly hard time ahead.
        Best to All

      51. I am in my late 30’s, and I have NEVER had any faith in our government.  As far as I am concerned, corruption is a prerequisite for entering into the policital ring.  They sell their votes to the highest bidder, and their viewpoint is just as much for sale as a hooker on a street-corner.  They throw God out of every aspect of their routine, spend money that isn’t their own for products/services they do not utilize themselves (speaks for the quality), and the American sheeple think they will “help” us.  Wake up.  Our government has been bought out, and I think that everything happening in Iceland, Greece, Hungary, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt is just a precursor of what awaits us.  And in closing, our Forefathers that laid everything on the line for the birth of this great nation are rolling over in their graves!  Thank you very little, Uncle Sammy!
