Do you want to know when the “economic collapse” is going to happen? Just open up your eyes and take a look. The “economic collapse” is already happening all around us. So many people talk about the coming economic collapse as if it is some massively hyped event that they will be able to point to on the calendar, and a lot of writers spend a lot of time speculating about exactly when it will happen. But as I have written about before, the economic collapse is not a single event. The economic collapse has been happening, it is happening right now, and it will be getting a lot worse. Yes, there will be moments of great crisis. We saw one of those “waves” back in 2008 and another “wave” is rapidly approaching. But all of the waves are part of a process that is continually unfolding. Over the past 40 years, the United States and Europe have piled up the greatest mountain of debt in the history of the world, and now a tremendous amount of pain is heading our way. Economic conditions in the United States and Europe have already deteriorated badly and they are going to continue to deteriorate. Nothing is going to stop what is coming.
But many people are still in denial about our economic decline. Some people still believe that everything is going to be just fine. Way too often I get comments on my site that go something like this….
“I just don’t know what you are talking about. Where I live everything is just fine. The malls are packed, the restaurants are full and everybody I know is going on vacation this summer. Personally, I am doing great. I just bought a 60 inch television and a new boat. Every year all the ‘doom and gloom’ types such as yourself proclaim that an economic collapse is right around the corner but it never happens. And you know what? It is not going to happen. Those in charge know what they are doing and America has the greatest economy on earth. We have overcome challenges before and we will be able to handle whatever comes this time. Your lack of faith in America and in the American people astounds me. Everything is going to be just fine, so why don’t you just *************************************.”
You get the idea.
I definitely understand that most Americans are terribly self-involved these days, but when I read comments like this I am once again amazed at just how delusional some people can be.
Why can’t people just open their eyes and look at the evidence of economic collapse that is all around us?
Yes, there are wealthy enclaves all over the country where things may seem better than ever, but that is not the reality for most Americans.
All over the country, our infrastructure is in shambles.
All over the country, our once proud cities are being transformed into hellholes.
All over the country, formerly middle class families are living in their cars.
There are dozens and dozens of economic statistics that clearly show that we are in the midst of a long-term economic decline. I have listed 65 of them below, but I could have easily doubled or tripled the size of the list.
I simply do not understand how anyone can believe that things are “great” or that the U.S. economy is going to be “just fine”.
We are living through a complete and total economic nightmare, and hopefully we can get more Americans to wake up from their entertainment-induced comas so that they can begin to understand exactly what is happening to this country.
The following are 65 signs that the economic collapse is already happening all around us….
1. Since Barack Obama entered the White House, the number of long-term unemployed Americans has doubled from 2.7 millionto 5.4 million.
2. The average duration of unemployment in the United States is nearly three times as long as it was back in the year 2000.
3. The unemployment rate in the U.S. has been above 8 percent for 40 months in a row, and 42 percent of all unemployed Americans have been out of work for at least half a year.
4. Unemployment in the eurozone has hit another brand new record high. It is now sitting at 11.2 percent. It has risen for 14 months in a row.
5. The U.S. economy lost more than 220,000 small businesses during the recent recession.
6. The percentage of Americans that are self-employed fell by more than 20 percent between 1991 and 2010.
7. Overall, the number of “new entrepreneurs and business owners” dropped by a staggering 53 percent between 1977 and 2010.
8. The unemployment rate in Spain is now up to 24.6 percent.
9. Morgan Stanley is projecting that the unemployment rate in Greece will exceed 25 percent in 2013.
10. Since Barack Obama became president, the price of a gallon of gasoline has risen from $1.85 to $3.49.
11. The average American household spent approximately $4,155 on gasoline during 2011, and electricity bills in the U.S. have risen faster than the overall rate of inflation for five years in a row.
12. About three times as many new homes were sold in the United States in 2005 as will be sold in 2012.
13. While Barack Obama has been in the White House, home values in the United States have declined by 12 percent.
14. According to AARP, 600,000 American homeowners that are 50 years of age or older are currently in foreclosure.
15. Right now there are now 20.2 million Americans that spend more than half of their incomes on housing. That represents a 46 percent increase from 2001.
16. According to Gallup, the current level of homeownership in the United States is the lowest that they have ever measured.
17. Federal housing assistance increased by a whopping 42 percent between 2006 and 2010.
18. In some areas of Detroit, Michigan you can buy a three bedroom home for just $500.
19. All around us our cities are crumbling. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, 2.2 trillion dollars is needed just to repair critical infrastructure in the United States.
20. The unemployment rate in New York City is now back up to 10 percent. That equals the peak unemployment rate in New York City during the last recession.
21. Back in 1950, more than 80 percent of all men in the United States had jobs. Today, less than 65 percent of all men in the United States have jobs.
22. The U.S. Postal Service is about to default on a 5.5 billion dollar payment for future retiree health benefits.
23. According to Graham Summers, “when we account for all the backdoor schemes Germany has engaged in to prop up the EU, Germany’s REAL Debt to GDP is closer to 300%.”
24. According to the Federal Reserve, the median net worth of families in the United States declined “from $126,400 in 2007 to $77,300 in 2010“.
25. The U.S. trade deficit with China during 2011 was 28 times larger than it was back in 1990.
26. The United States has lost more than 56,000 manufacturing facilities since 2001.
27. During 2010 alone, an average of 23 manufacturing facilities permanently shut down in the United States every single day.
28. The U.S. government says that the number of Americans “not in the labor force” rose by 17.9 million between 2000 and 2011. During the entire decade of the 1980s, the number of Americans “not in the labor force” rose by only 1.7 million.
29. Eight million Americans have “left the labor force” since the recession supposedly ended. If those Americans were added back into the unemployment figures, the unemployment rate would be somewhere up around 12 percent.
30. Approximately 53 percent of all U.S. college graduates under the age of 25 were either unemployed or underemployed last year.
31. At this point, one out of every four American workers has a job that pays $10 an hour or less. If that sounds like a high figure, that is because it is. Today, the United States actually has a higher percentage of workers doing low wage work than any other major industrialized nation does.
32. Back in 1980, less than 30% of all jobs in the United States were low income jobs. Today, more than 40% of all jobs in the United States are low income jobs.
33. According to one study, between 1969 and 2009 the median wages earned by American men between the ages of 30 and 50 declined by 27 percent after you account for inflation.
34. In 2007, the unemployment rate for the 20 to 29 age bracket was about 6.5 percent. Today, the unemployment rate for that same age group is about 13 percent.
35. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, health care costs accounted for just 9.5% of all personal consumption back in 1980. Today they account for approximately 16.3%.
36. Medicare spending increased by 138 percent between 1999 and 2010.
37. Over the next 75 years, Medicare is facing unfunded liabilities of more than 38 trillion dollars. That comes to $328,404 for each and every household in the United States.
38. Back in 1990, the federal government accounted for 32 percent of all health care spending in America. Today, that figure is up to 45 percent and it is projected to surpass 50 percent very shortly.
39. Back in 1965, only one out of every 50 Americans was on Medicaid. Today, one out of every 6 Americans is on Medicaid, and things are about to get a whole lot worse. It is being projected that Obamacare will add 16 million more Americans to the Medicaid rolls.
40. Since 2008, the U.S. economy has lost 1.3 million jobs while at the same time 3.6 million more Americans have been added to Social Security’s disability insurance program.
41. Since Barack Obama entered the White House, the number of Americans living in poverty has risen by 6.4 million.
42. The number of Americans on food stamps has risen from 32 million to 46 million since Barack Obama became president.
43. Right now the poverty rate for children living in the United States is 22 percent, and approximately one-fourth of all American children are enrolled in the food stamp program at this point.
44. The number of children living in poverty in the state of California has increased by 30 percent since 2007.
45. Child homelessness in the United States has risen by 33 percent since 2007.
46. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 36.4 percent of all children that live in Philadelphia are living in poverty, 40.1 percent of all children that live in Atlanta are living in poverty, 52.6 percent of all children that live in Cleveland are living in poverty and 53.6 percent of all children that live in Detroit are living in poverty.
47. Approximately 57 percent of all children in the United States are living in homes that are either considered to be either “low income” or impoverished.
48. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of Americans living in “extreme poverty” is now sitting at an all-time high.
49. In the United States today, somewhere around 100 million Americans are considered to be either “poor” or “near poor”.
50. It is now being projected that about half of all American adults will spend at least some time living below the poverty line before they turn 65.
51. Total home mortgage debt in the United States is now about 5 times larger than it was just 20 years ago.
52. Total consumer debt in the United States has risen by 1700 percent since 1971.
53. Recently it was announced that total student loan debt in the United States has passed the one trillion dollar mark.
54. According to one recent survey, approximately one-third of all Americans are not paying their bills on time at this point.
55. In 1983, the bottom 95 percent of all income earners in the United States had 62 cents of debt for ever dollar that they earned. Today, the bottom 95 percent of all income earners in the United States have $1.48 of debt for every dollar that they earn.
56. The United States was once ranked #1 in the world in GDP per capita. Today we have slipped to #12.
57. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 49 percent of all Americans live in a home where at least one person receives benefits from the federal government. Back in 1983, that number was below 30 percent.
58. Incredibly, 37 percent of all U.S. households that are led by someone under the age of 35 have a net worth of zero or less than zero.
59. Today there are approximately 25 million American adults that are living with their parents.
60. The U.S. dollar has lost more than 96 percent of its value since 1900. You can thank the Federal Reserve system for that.
61. During the Obama administration, the U.S. government has accumulated more debt than it did from the time that George Washington took office to the time that Bill Clinton took office.
62. Overall, the U.S. national debt has grown by nearly 10 trillion dollars over the past decade.
63. The U.S. national debt is now more than 22 times larger than it was when Jimmy Carter became president.
64. 40 years ago the total amount of debt in America (government, business and consumer) was less than 2 trillion dollars. Today it is nearly 55 trillion dollars.
65. As Financial Armageddon recently point out, so many homeless people are pooping on the escalators at San Francisco’s Civic Center Station at night that the escalators are breaking down and repair teams have been called in to clean up the mess. As the economy gets even worse, will scenes like this start playing out in all of our cities?

I kind of doubt that’s going to be the plan next time around…
The economy is a funny animal, because of the numbers and nothing to back it up, it has no real true indication of its true demise. This could go on for awhile, UNLESS. It seems like there has to be a tipping point that takes it over the edge. Think of the economy as a sinking ship or New Orleans with pumps running constantly to pour water outside the ship or the city. As long as these pumps work 24 hours a day, the true deluge could take some time before the system becomes overwhelmed, It will be overwhelmed, but when is the question.
The real ticket here is the event that will shut down those pumps that pouring water (debt) out not quite fast enough. In other words the second those pumps go off, the ship sinks like Titanic or the city goes to the fish very rapidly. What can shut down those pumps that are ONLY putting off the inevitable? Real simple, anything that will shut down the country. Let’s look at some of the probable events that could be the monkey wrench into those economic pumps that HAVE to continue to work or rapid implosion occurs.
Definitie shut down:
-Major Middle-East war where oil is no longer flowing for more than 1 month.
-EMP, at least 1/3 of the country affected.
-Collapse of U.S. dollar for numberous reasons.
-China calling for immediate payment of debt owed to it from U.S., maybe a Taiwan episode could cause this.
-False flag because election is looking very bleak for BO.
-Widespread terrorist attack, likely using weapons of mass destruction.
-Pandemic, not even something that has a high fatality rate, just a high morbidity rate.
-Major earthquake, one of the following or both, San Andreas fault breaks, New Madrid fault breaks.
-A good size volcanic eruption, probably VEI of 6 or higher in the United States.
There are many others, but these are all within the realm of very possible.
Possible shut down:
-New York City alone is destroyed, Category 4 or higher hurricane, earthquake, terrorism, whatever.
-Houston alone is destroyed, again Category 4 or 5 hurricane, much refinery and petro-chemicals here.
-Port Fourchon where 20-25% of all oil is brought in is destroyed by hurricane.
-Hoover Dam is destroyed, earthquake, terrorism, the water and hydro-electric lost here would be devastating.
-Terrorism on one of more of the major ports, especially the ones handling Asia.
-A true agricultural blight. Plant diseases happen all the time, U.S. cannot lose its ability to export food.
-Widespread terrorism not using weapons of mass destruction. Fear factor and mass speculation on markets.
-Trust factor on U.S. is lost on world markets suddenly.
-Hyperinflation because of smaller factors takes off one day, like precious metals jumping 2 times or more.
-War in other parts of the world besides the Middle-East.
Again, there are many others, but these are all within what is quite possible.
In other words, to all those doubting Thomas people out there, plenty of events that have happened before and will happen again can and will be the tipping point to collapse the economy. Those floodgates and pumps that keep the economy barely floating, like a listing ship full of seawater, will keep the ship above water for awhile. However, one event, one moderate size SHTF event can be that episode that makes all those systems keeping the financial sector barely alive, die all of a sudden.
As a prepper and someone that keeps intuned with the world and nation events can take advantage of this by knowing how weak the system is, and WHEN something like one of these SHTF events occurs, to act on it. The U.S. economy is a battleship hit multiple times and is just waiting for the last torpedo to finish it off.
I’m looking at your food comment and thinking about the drought. If the corn and wheat crops turn out as bad forecasters say they will food prices will skyrocket even more than they have in the past 3.5 years. I went to the store today for groceries. Two things really jumped out as far as price increases. Boneless skinless chicken breast from $1.99/lb two weeks ago to $2.99 and one dozen eggs from $1.69 to $1.99 during same time frame.That’s 33% and 15% respectively in two weeks. I substituted pork chops for the chicken and paid for the eggs. Got to look into the powdered eggs supposedly available at ChinaMart. Don’t know what I’m going to do about the chicken. I can’t raise chickens where I currently live and can’t move readily.
navy vet-if you can get to a military commissary or a good large grocery store…you will find in the meat freezers things like chicken, beef roasts/steaks etc.. that have been frozen and are called manager specials..buy it up, then take it home and can it or dry it.. i spent the day doing this with beef roasts..put them in crockpots and let them cook on low at night..then first thing in the morning pack into mason jars and pressure can for 90min. not only are you saving money at the store, but you have meat already cooked and preserved for when shtf times. you can do this with just about any food item there is.

@Navy Vet,,,,Too bad you can’t have chickens where you live. I have 45 of them and would be glad to share. The cost of feeding that many is taking a toll due to huge increases in corn prices. Selling “free range” eggs almost lets us break even. If I add my labor, I’m making somewhere around a nickel an hour. Around October, we are going to can a bunch of them as labor is just too hard in winter. Also, your comment on corn and wheat needed to include soybeans. They will take a terrible hit also.
Navy Vet, I just bought eggs today for $1.59 a dozen. I tried to buy local eggs, but the percentage of bad ones made the grocery store eggs a better buy. What’s really out of sight here is meat. The good hamburger is $5.09 per pound. I am having to wait for the store to mark down meat that’s about to expire. Then I buy it all and store it.
Navy vet: I agree, as people struggle to pay bills and buy groceries, they will cut way back on charity and church giving, home improvements, travel (gas prices going up) and dining out. Folks, best to start downsizing, sell things you don’t need and maybe move to a smaller house or rent. We enjoy the outdoors, city and state parks, other free or low cost activities in local rec centers, etc. Many wanna be or new preppers can’t afford to prep the way things are now.

DPS: The closest thing that I have seen to “hyperinflation” is the price of a loaf of bread that I noted previously, had gone up 25% in the past two years; from $1.00 to $1.25 a loaf for sandwich bread.
I am not a shopper either and can’t remember when I last bought a loaf of bread. I try to avoid flour, sugar, and salt in all of their forms.
Milk is the same price here as it has been for quite some time. I am a single guy so I am not a big consumer of groceries and I do eat many meals out. Those costs, if any, have not been passed along to customers.
One thing I found noteworthy at Wal Mart the other day was the price of cereal while I was looking for Almonds. I can remember when cereal was about $5.00 a box. It seems a lot cheaper now.
Fresh fruit (peaches, rasberries, cherries,and blackberries from Washington State achieve a premium from what I have seen, but I buy them anyway. Bananas are still $.56 lb. I bought TWO quarts of blueberries the other day for get this, $.97 each. No coupon involved at Albertson’s.
DPS you cannot buy milk at a convenience store and expect to get a bargain on the price. You pay for convenience, buddy.

Do you really think I go to pak a sac to buy my milk?? The prices for milk here are holding steading at 4.09 a gal.. Thats at the largest groery chain in the panhandle or TX.. A bag of my favorite snack which is pecans jumped last Jan. to 10.99 a pound.. Today those same pecans are 11.99. so yes 25 % is right in line..As far as bread goes I make my own now I will not pay 1.99 a loaf..These are not prices at the local corner store bud, its prices at the grocery store. About the 1 thing thing that saves my budget is beef and pork.. I picked up 40 lbs of newyork strip today for 1.99 a lbs..

DPS: $4.09 is a bit high, I think. My price for 2% is about $3.79 a gallon. Half gallons about $1.97. I don’t buy a lot of milk, but sometimes its on sale and its often lower here if you buy two at a time.
I am not in Phoenix for the summers,so I haven’t seen any dust storms for three years now, but I have seen some rain and hail among the Pines where I am located.
We have Dairy’s in the immediate area serving Phoenix so not much in transportation costs, and there is a lot of hay grown on the perimeter to feed the cows.
Location makes a difference I suppose and of course its always cheaper if the market is larger and more competitive.

My mother is 81 years old. She lost her bother to WW11 POW camp he was burn alive for try to excape and believe in this government. My fear is she will one day live to see all she believe was wrong. She grew up in the 30’s as small child so she has memories of want. An the reason her brother was in the Army in 1938 the last time she saw him.

This reminds me of the morning of 911. I was getting ready for work and listening to the TV news just like every other workday. They cut to NY to show one tower with billowing black smoke. I thought “that looks bad!” and said a prayer for those inside and those who must respond to put it out. The TV men were discussing what might have happened. As I stood there a moment, a plane came into the right side of the screen. And even though I instantly KNEW what happened to the first tower and that it was about to happen again, part of my brain just would not accept it! My eyes saw it plow into the next tower but my brain said. “No that just does not happen”. I started to pray again even as my brain denied what I was seeing and praying about. I don’t mean that I did not want to believe it. I mean that I did NOT believe it.
Right now today is so much like that morning. We are watching one tower burning and the next plane approaching but our hearts and minds just can’t seem to “see” what our eyes tell us we are seeing.
The worst part about it, is that TPTB are flying that next plane…

The ride is getting bumpier every day and eventually it will come to a screeching halt. Many of them live on credit and when things get just a bit worse, they will suffer from the trickle down effect. The majority of americans are not immune to what we are facing on a daily basis. The economy is on life support, the weather is making it much worse in some areas and the the fall promises to bring forth some very disturbing changes in the way we go about our lives, in my opinion. I take each day as it comes and not much surprises me anymore, I am up for the challenge and may the best man win.

@ Ohcumgache. Well said. There is much wisdom in this from a very scientific approach about the planet. The energy, carbons trapped inside the planet as fuel has been frozen like this for tens of millions of years. When these carbons are re-released into the environment there MUST be change, this is physical law. The last time there was this much carbon in the atmosphere the planet was much warmer. The planet if it was meant to be this warm with this much carbon in the air it would be. When something is thrown off balance, it wants to go back into being eqaulized.
When someone mixes a strong basic and acid together you get a strong chemical reaction, sometimes an explosion. This is the balance trying to be met. The planet has natural mechanisms that counteract anything that SHOULD NOT BE. It is how quickly it tries to re-establish this balance is how strongly it affects human civilization. A gentle slow response will allow humans to adapt and further poison the environment. A more rapidly response and you could see something like the movie “The Day After Tomorrow” in which extreme climate change occrs and destroys most of human civilization. You cannot have the planet NOT respond to what is being done to it. This goes against physical law of science that all life forms and the planet itself must live with.
Like I have said with earthquakes, NO ONE should ever under-estimate what this planet is capable of, NEVER!

We are doing better than average here since we are heavy in both government services and natural gas, but I have been underemployed since 2008. It started out by design, but have had trouble getting back to full-time employment.
My wife is on a federally funded annual contract which just got renewed so I am always recalculating how much longer we will be in town. Lacking civil unrest we should be able to stay in town through Spring 2014.
Why would we want to? Although this Fall is my deadline date for current projects, I have a whole other level I would like to reach which includes a bigger earthbermed home with a masonry furnace (rocket stove) and a rooftop greenhouse.
I know what some are thinking – “We will never make it to 2014.’ I was told we would never make it to 2010 and yet here we are. I am planning for the worst, but hoping for the best. Besides this is my refuge and not only do I enjoy the solitude, but I get a lot more done while it is vacant.

It’s getting harder and harder to find jobs in the new home and/or remodeling market here in northern Michigan. There’s work out there but people are getting tighter and tighter. I’ll work for less than I did 4 years ago so I’m busy for the next couple months but it’s going to be a long winter regardless. We freeze or can what ever is available fresh. Strawberries first, cherries, berries, blueberries and now lots of fresh veggies from ours and friends gardens. The weather took a tole on the cherry market so if you like dried cherries you better get them while you can. The local farmers are getting hit pretty bad all around. Prices are way up and we expect more. Gas was 3.79 this morning. We’ve stocked up on all grains and lots of canned fruit and veggies, nuts and spices. Lots of Quinoa (keen-wa) and rice too. We can’t do much more than we have. Our garden gets larger every year. I buy a few more bullets, a bit more silver and try to keep things as normal as I can. My world is small, which I like. I stay close to home and as close to God as I can. There’s no reason to go to far anymore.

Just recently found out that a frind of mine’s son and girlfriend are out on the street , living in a jeep close to his work. Cant afford a place to live because she lost her job, and he doesnt make enough to support them both and have a place to live.
the shit already hit the fan for them, and it wasnt because they werent trying, they are young and just starting out. no roof over thier heads, and not much of a job or income to keep them afloat. Wish I could offer them something, but Im too far away, and they are too proud to take it,(wont even take welfare) at least thats what his dad told me, we tried
its not going to be long before it gets cold where they are at
these are young adults with highschool education,came from middle class american families and willing and able to work..thank god they dont have any kids to support.

@ Satori. Yes, the southern Cascadia is exactly what is believed to let the pressure from the San Andreas off and allow it to move. The southern San Andreas is thought to have broke the last time about 1700 when the Cascadia let loose. 240 years average snapping means it is 72 years overdue to break. Think of the Pacific plate as a giant curved bottle cap twisting northwest or counter-clockwise. The Cascadia fault is like a piece of debris stuck and preventing a lot from the south from following that northwest movement. When the fault releases its energy, and more importantly the mass blocking southernly faults from moving.
It doesn’t mean that the San Andreas that has built up tremendous pressure cannot be the catalyst to push the Cascadia fault to failure and may well had been what did so before 1700. A horizontal fault has more push than a thrust fault because it is horizontal. Thrust faults are vertical and horizontal. Could be the San Andreas breaks and then the Cascadia fault goes off. That mega strike slip in Indonesia did just this with faults around the world after it threw off a 8.6 or 8.7 and then a 8.2 or 8.3.
They will always talk about 50 year or similar time frames as to not terrify the people. The fact is that the longer it doesn’t break the more intense it will be WHEN it does. It is interesting to note that pressure release points for the Cascadia fault follow about the same as the San Andreas. Earthquakes of large magnitude along the following line could help release enough pressure to allow the Cascadia to move:
-Southern Alaska
-Eastern Russia
-Central eastern China
-West of the mega strike slip quake, between Sri Lanka and Indonesia
-Even the boundary line between the African and the Australian plate in the Indian Ocean.
Pressure point release can be clear way around the world, as someone is again looking at these faults on a three dimensional scale. Taking a flat tape measure or a flat piece of string on a globe someone can see just how faults and the planet itself doesn’t behave like what a flat map has fooled our eyes into thinking.
This is what appears to be what could cause the Cascadia fault to break, release to the northwest, or something like the San Andreas pushing it to fail to the southeast. By the way there was a little earthquake of 4.3 at 84 degrees north about 16 hours ago, but this not big enough to make another prediction YET. Let it get up higher and there should be a forecast coming of an earthquake.
How does this tie into the article above about economic failure? A diaster like this will cause the U.S. economy to go into a deep tailspin and will likely be that torpedo that sinks it. It seems like too often the masses forget what the land below us can do. It could be a geo-physical event that cause the economic collapse.

@informed- I did a six week trip up the coasts of N cal.oregon, and wash a couple of years back, and you can see physical evidence(land features) off the coast and inland of ancient tsunami’s, as well as some evidence of recent tsunami’s(trees).
The tsunami’s(and perhaps volcanic activity) caused by a large quake off the coast there would be iceing on the cake.
But just like an economic collapse(and massive grid failures), that stuff only happens some where else(over there), right. 🙂

I live one mile from the beach, I’m 50 feet above sea level. I have been prepping because of this and have been increasing my prepping this week. When the bridge and hwy 101 is gone, no trucks will be coming to this area for a long time. We have been canning tuna and salmon and raising a small garden, and stocking more supplies every week when I go to town.
I have just recently starting reading this site and have gained alot of knowledge, and a desire to learn more.
@OrDuner. I suppose the Or means you are from Oregon, and WHEN the Cascadia fault goes you can definitely expect a very large tsunami. I know that highway 101 runs along most of the coast all the way from eureka area in calif. up to the Canadian border. You are not safe from a tsunami at where you are. It is not so much the elevation, it is the distance from the ocean that someone has to worry about. To show this during both of the tsunamis in Japan and Indonesia the water rushed uphill in many instances, as many after photographs have shown.
Something called land drag takes the energy away from water movement, this is true with hurricane storm surges also. Even a 30 foot tsunami can force water uphill to much higher elevations, just look at how a simple beach wave of 5 feet can break at exactly sea level and the water of that wave can be pushed to higher than 5 feet in elevation. With a tsunami you are talking about many waves in a series of waves pushing water towards the shoreline. This is not too different than a storm surge. Being one mile away, you would probably have to be up at least 100 feet, maybe even 150 feet up to be safe. One mile with a wave travelling at 30 mph will swamp an area in 2 minutes.
The tsunami of course is going to be taller the closer someone is to the point of water being moved from the massive displacement of land that is moving and has just moved. Oregon and Washington is right there and most areas will face something that is about 1/3 to 1/2 the maximum strength of the tsunami. The Japanese wave reached 78 feet at the highest recorded, could have been higher in some spots. A 26-39 foot wave for most coastal areas because they expect the Cascadia earthquake to rival the Japanese quake or be a little bigger. A 40 foot wave will almost certainly sweep everything 1 mile away even at 50 feet in elevation.
There is also something else that people forget about is the close proximity means extremely little warning, especially at night. When the shaking starts, a person may have as little as a few minutes before the water covers them. A family must get to higher ground the second that they can safely do so.
If I were in that position of being so close to the coast and at 50 feet up, I would find somewhere I could do to that was much higher, 150 feet up at the same distance, or at least 3 miles further inland at the same elevation. Check out some of the photos of Japan and see just how far inland water can go, it is frightening.
One other thing is the shaking itself. Expect about 600 miles of fault to break with the Cascadia fault, that means about 300 seconds of shaking, one second for each 2 miles of fault break. This is 5 minutes of shaking. Not the common 10 seconds or so of intense shaking of most earthquakes that people go through, 5 MINUTES. Take an egg timer and see what 5 minutes is like, it is a long time. Most structures built on this planet cannot take 5 minutes of shaking if someone is close enough to the focal point of energy, or hypocentre. The epicenter is where the earthquake starts underground, the hyopcentre is where the earthquake waves hit the surface of the planet.
Just a suggestion, have another location as a back-up for your supplies, because this close to the coastline, it could be underwater. Again, I don’t know whether you are in Oregon or calif, or Washington, and I don’t know where the break will occur along the fault. For safety, 50 feet up and 1 mile away could not be high enough up. If the earthquake is 9.0 or more, it is likely it won’t be. IF it is 9.2 like this article says it could be, this location won’t be safe in Oregon or Washington. You also have to consider the possibility that some of the land mass you are on top of could sink somewhat also from the ground being displaced. This happens with mega quakes.
There is good news though, IF there is no earthquake in the mega range, your location is far enough away from WHEN times goes to the toilet that your self sufficient ability to get reliable food will put you and your family in a far better position than most people. The earthquake could be many years away, the hell on Earth could be tomorrow or this month. Any case, glad you are preparing, you are the wise 1%.
I live in a neihgborhood built on bed rock. At our neighborhood monthly meeting that focused on Red Cross Preparedness we had a local geologist, that also lives in our neighborhood speak. I live in the northern Puget sound. I ask him, what about the big wave. He said – The coast is toast in five minutes if the plates shift.
The resulting wave will bounce off of the San Juan Islands as it rushes into the Strait of Juan De Fuca. The resulting wave that hits my inland bay area would take out the harbors and down town and leave the rest of the settled land fairly Okay. He said there is a reason he is our neighbor.
He teaches at the local college. I want to believe him.
They teach us here that you need to get 100 feet up or a mile inland.I am not sure where you are getting your information, but those of us who live here get it locally.
In the interm, we have every outdoor sport you can imagine, live next to a huge national forest, in the second largest county in the state, have wild life, fishing, camping, skiing, hiking, hunting,biking,swimming, sailing, and also do not have a drought!
Our yearly snow capped volcano gets the most snowfall of any mountain in the WORLD!
We are full of fertile fields of fruits and vegys, hay and farm animals and excellent drinking water, hydro power and no nukes!

Have EVERYTHING(important papers,pm’s,cash,a firearm,water and some supplies) in a bob(ready at a moments notice) or stashed away farther inland.

The ancient people of japan built markers warning future generations NOT to build homes in(below) certain spots(those were ignored by most, and I am sure some professors over there did so also (relying on what they have been taught, and students of history will tell you where that can take you(down the wrong path))
Question- Is there any evidence of markers left there by past native cultures?(warnings passed down verbally or maybe carved in wood(or stone)?
@ Halfkin. I don’t want to insult anyone that teaches at a college, but I have seen this again and again, famous last words. One mile inland is not safe with a 30 plus foot tsunami unless you are up at least 100 feet. Granted that the force of water will be reduced, but there will be flooding. Water with that much inertia behind it will easily go one mile inland. Don’t believe me, check out some of the tsunami induced photos in which water went many miles inland, in some cases areas that were not totally flat. Storm surge shows this all too well with Hurricane Rita and Katrina.
I remember reading in a text book that it was “assumed” very deep earthquakes, down hundreds of kilometers were impossible over 7.0 because it is molasses like down there and the pressure could not build up that much so. Several years ago there was a 8.1 in Peru that as I can remember 450-600 kilometers deep, don’t remember the exact depth but it was very deep. I called up the USGS and talked with one of the head people there and all he could say was, “it is one for the record books”. Yeah right, I long presumed assumption put to shame the science community by more than 1 full magnitude of energy.
I have so often dealed with the geological field and unfortunately the professors are often total conformists and have deep horse blinders on and new theories are laugh at and judge like some renaissance era tribunal. I have a theory on predicting earthquakes that would ruled as nothing but a coincidence, yet this has proven to be accurate as just the last time from the series of earthquakes in the polar north showed what was coming again. In a post on this site before it happened, I stated to look for a 6.4-6.6 in the Tonga area, 6.5 or 6.6 happened a little over a hour later in Paupa New Guinea. I also watch central America and a 6.0 occurred there, the largest for that area since 1985. I also said look at Chile, and today 6.1 in Peru. Also stated watch the northern most part of Japan and a little further north there was a 5.7 in eastern Russia over the weekend. I said southern Alaska as a possibility which has yet to happen within the 5 day period I gave on Sunday. 4 out of 5 predictions in the specific areas with one right on with the magnitude is not bad. I do this though not to self boaster my ego, but to come up with a way of predicting earthquakes to save people because those in the scientific community are mostly just too close minded to think outside the box to come up with a theory that can work.
Back to safety, water can move in strange ways all depending on the way it is channeled in and all depending on just how much land actually moves and just how rapidly it moves. Kinetic energy. People are terrified of the Canary Islands falling into the ocean, but don’t realize that the velocity of this plays into the factor far more than the mass. WHEN it does fall into the Atlantic by the time the tsunami reaches Florida it should be about 9 inches high or so. WHEN the Cascadia fault breaks much of the size and the power behind the Tsunami will be determined by just how much fault break, the depth of the water, the angle of break, and many other factors such as the contours of the shoreline.
In short, I would not trust one mile as being safe inland, in my opinion and for past photographic proof, this has proven to be a fatal assumption from those swept away by the flood waters. Not moving as fast as on the coastline because of land drag, but enough to easily knock down most structuces. Don’t believe me, check out some of the satellite photos of Japan as proof.
In any case, just stay safe, preppers are worth it for what is coming, as there are only 1% of the people that prepare left in the population.

Greetings all, the situation that we are facing goes beyond the scope of what one person can do. If you are truly objective and honest with yourself it doesnt matter wbo is at 1600 Pennsylvania ave, because that which is happening at this very moment is a design that was concieved and set into motion nearly 60 years ago. People this reset has been meticulously thought out and since its inception every facet of the plan has gone like clockwork. The only thing that can minutely alter this course of action is to do what we are doing in this forum, talk, exchange ideas, and come up with plans that will somewhat lessen the havoc and devastation that is quickly heading our way. Lets cease with the bashing of those that are ambivalent to what you and I obviously can see. Mind control techniques have reached a whole new level of effectiveness, and they are being employed in ways that most cant even begin to understand. This is why many seem not to have a clue. It is part of the grand design. You may be asking what is this grand design and who is behind it ? Currently on the planet there are 7 billion + and counting, in order to sustain and perpetuate life projections and calculations were made that once this number was attained depopulation would have to be implemented, colonizing space was a option but the logistics were off. With the technological advances and population explosion we have seen, the throttle is being pushed, we are at the saturation point.The who behind all this most of you are more than likely aware. You once said that you didn’t want people to think of you as a sheep, and that you were preparing for SHTF like most everyone on this site which is insight that 99% of the other people lack. You honestly feel that there will not be an economic collapse, but what exactly do you feel is going to happen? Do you just prepare just in case for a magnitude of events, which is always a good idea?
There are many events that can cause an economic collapse that loom over all of us. I could easily see a plague developing that would flatten the economy in a heartbeat. New deadly viruses break out all the time in plant and animal species. Just recently a deadly snake virus in Australia started up and is horrible for snakes that get it. Human pathogens are just waiting all over the entire regions from 30 degrees north to 30 degrees south. People are so dirty in these countries and more people are crammed into these squalid hell-holes every year. This could easily cause a total collapse of everything just because people could not work and maintain the infrastructure. Viruses spread so quickly also, and those that don’t catch it will likely isilate themselves and not help maintain anything.
I could see good old Mother Nature letting loose and causing the economy to go to the toilet quickly. I personally cannot see the economy maintaining itself after the San Andreas goes off with a 8.1-8.4 and destroys the 8th largest economy alone, california. I have estimated that the cost of something like this will easily be in the trillions, and more likely surpassing 10 trillion. The life insurance companies will go bankrupt if the death toll is over 500,000, which it could easily be. It is an economic nightmare on top of the strong possiblity of martial law for the west coast and maybe even Nevada and Arizona because of the millions still left alive and homeless afterwards.
The economy is not just set up by markets, Mother nature pays a huge factor in it as crop prices show this all the time. Corn is not only human and animal food, it is also (unfortunately) ethanol and affects fuel prices. The real problem though is going to be something that the planet hits the U.S. with that has not happened in modern times. The New Madrid Fault in 1811-1812 broke as did a portion of the San Andreas in 1812 did. Coincidence? No way.
I say this to everyone, NEVER underestimate what this planet can do within an instance. I have felt ONLY about 22% the force of gravity of an earthquake, and this was intense enough to appreciate what an earthquake approaching 200% the force of gravity that many earthquakes can exert. We are all so tiny in comparison to this planet and the shear force it can hit ANY manmade structure with.

Take notice how much you can buy with a given amount of money, say $10, even 1 year ago vs. today. That simple test will show you negative economic change. And they can only borrow and print so much…

As I walked in to work this morning, carrying my lunch box with a homemade lunch in it. I noticed how many people who weren’t bringing a lunch (which means they had to go out at lunch time and spend about 7 -10 bucks or more), had a $5 starbucks in their hand.
What these people spend a day on lattes and lunch, I could (and sometimes do) eat for a week.
Later on in the morning I had a conversation about the local real estate market. Having come from Michigan, I can recognize a housing crash when I see one. And where I’m living now, there’s definitely one coming here soon. Yet these people are talking about buying $200K – $300K homes.
Are people really this stupid, that clueless? (rhetorical question, no need to reply)
I saved and lived poor for years. Now that I’m retired and see the end coming I am going to spend it like a drunken sailor. What’s the point of saving it anymore? A crash is inevitable and inflation is going to kick in hard. Besides I’m 60, how many ticks of the clock could I have? If it gets real bad I have a 10MM bullet with my name on it. I just don’t give a shit anymore. 🙁

Manage to escape about a year ago. Company moved the operations and offered me a position and a generous re-lo package. I wasn’t to sure back then, but I feel about as secure as anyone can in this economy, or at least better off than if I was still in the mitten.
I know Snyder is trying, but when you got the free loaders in Detroit and Flint, with Lansing not far behind and all your jobs leaving the state, plus the “middle easterners” ripping off the system any way they can, the odds are stacked pretty high against him.

Not sure if anyone else here noticed this yesterday. You should all take a look at what the main stream media tells this man. He has amassed a $100,000 in retirement savings, but is unemployed and the writer says put what you don’t need in stocks/bonds 50/50. Very sad.
I’d like to tell this man: Use $50,000 on a foreclosed or low end home with enough land to grow your own food, and spend another $10k of your money building your own solar system so you don’t need the “mans” power either. You just spent $60k of your wealth but have your home and power settled for life.
Now get some internet, learn all you can, be self sufficient, and buy only those things you have too. I’d put the rest in gold, silver, guns, ammo, seeds, oh and a water recovery system (AZ got to be tough on water).

i find it funn that i read this on this day, i live in canada and i think that we will be following the states real quick too, i hear about canada revenu agency going after all the small businesses, we hear alot of small businesses closing, but yet today, i find myself a nice contract for myself, cash job of course, and the labour that we hired was talking about one of his buddy’s companie, hard wood flooring company, and he mentionned that he noticed that he was doing more cash jobs then declared jobs, thats another big thing, all the small businesses that still operate today, are operating because they declare about 20% of all their jobs, its what i do and its what most people do, their is no other way to survive until we actually stand up and destroy what is destroying us,

It’s what lots of people do–I know of one self-employed man that had a $27,000 loss in 2011; but he has about 6 years of food and supplies tucked away, no bills except a mortgage, 3 vehicles paid for, no credit card debt, a little savings ‘in the house’, AND…just got turned down for re-fi because his debt-to-income ratio showed he was a -1150 each month.

No government institutions are broke…..not as long as the FED owns the printing press.
Alan Greenspan told Congress years ago ( regarding Social Security ) “We can absolutely guarantee payments…..but not purchasing power”.
Meaning just as the FED has inflated the dollar for 100 years, they will continue to do so as long as people will accept them for currency.
The REASON the economy is limping along now is due to the fact the Govt (via the FED) is printing about 50% of the funds needed to give away in massive social programs. Those didn’t exist in the last depression, so it was quite obvious when there was 25% unemployment and soup lines.
Today, with extended unemployment benefits, EB cards, Social Security and Disability payments, and so on, there is enough “money” floating out into the economy to make things appear fine. But as more and more of those dollars are printed, the value continues to drop….and the rate of drop is getting faster now.
At some point in the not too distant future, the dollar will be completely worthless, and then things really will get interesting.
Exactly, that is the real reason for the sh&t we are in now, not some nameless, faceless corporation (except for God’s Creation’s corp). Sorry, Walmart, Exxon-Mobil, microsoft, etc. have not brought this country to it’s knees. It is the fed gov’t redistributing trillions of dollars of wealth to people who did not earn it, then devaluing what we have left (what they ALLOW us to keep), but printing trillions more. Sorry I seem pissed, but I am off to bankruptcy court today. I make about the same amount I did 10 years ago, but my expenses have gone up 65% and my purchasing power has gone down 40%. I am basically living on zero, even though I make an average annual salary.

To everyone: I already see many of these same things on the streets of Memphis everyday. With only half of the population working and paying revenue into the system and the other half living on that same revenue in the form of one government program or another, it’s only a matter of time before the house of cards comes tumbling down. In the weeks and months ahead, the percentage of people working and paying taxes will continue to decline, while the percentage of people on the social programs will continue going up. Their demands for more and more will get louder and louder. Such a situation can be maintained for only so long. When their alleged “entitlements” finally get cut off, they will literally lose it; that’s when tshtf and it’s game on. They’re not going to care who they hurt or what they do; we’ll finally see the absolute worst we’ll ever see in humanity. i really dread what i may have to do in order to protect my home and preps. Could you give us an idea? Price of milk, bread, beef, chicken, gasoline, electricity per kWh, car, washing machine, etc?
Recently, an Australian told a friend in the same profession that the price of a service that goes for $50/hr in the US goes for $85 in Australia. However,they said the cost of a fast food meal is $20 there and about $7 here.
I was last in Oz in 2000, when the exchange rate was in favor of the USD. It looked to me, then, as though the cost of housing had already surpassed the US and appliances were also more expensive.
Since then, Australia has instituted a lot of carbon taxes. How has that affected the COL?
You are all right when it comes to food prices and pretty much everything else as well. They are getting out there. Fotunately at least for me, I have beef cattle, a few fruit trees, and family with gardens. I am ordering more fruit trees, planting some more nut trees, and other berry plants. I know they will take a while to mature to get any fruit off but at least if my family does survive I am helping secure our food supply.
Another thing I would recodmend would be find any discount or salvage grocery stores in your area. You can find some amazing deals in those places. I can buy a can of 28oz Bush beans for 50 cents with a 2014 date becuase it has a small dent in it. My kids love juicy juice and we buy 64oz bottles for a $1. They may have a May date or a an September date on it. You never know but I have tried juicy juice 5 months after the date on the lid and it is fine. My family saves money on food this way by eating this stuff and buying better stuff that will last a long time for our stash. These places alot of times will only accept cash or check so know one expects anything when you pay cash instead of using a credit card.
My wife has found canning jars in the classifieds for less than 3 dollars a dozen. Scarf stuff like this up. Yard sales are also great for this kind of stuff.
Here in East Tennessee, we have not been hurt too much by drought. June was dry and hot but we had over 13in of rain in July. The most ever recorded for any month. August has also started off wet. Hopefully, we will have a good deer hunting season as well.

A friend and I took a walk today through the downtown mall. It is small compared to malls in larger cities. We were surprised at the number of vacant stores, just in the last couple of weeks. We also took note that there were very few shoppers. The local newspaper is constantly doing stories on how the local employment figures are climbing. Do we believe the local rag; or our lying eyes?
I can also back up your view.
I did a self area assesment over the past month, saw the same as you are reporting. The area I am near, ( had to go a bit out of my comfort zone because im a bit secluded, ) but with my favorite protection at my side I made trip to a few local malls, and buisness areas and commercial lands..let me say it looks pretty dismal.
many empty vacant store fronts, many commercial real estate signs, many single family real estate signs, and even the small kiosk that used to line the isles of a pretty large mall were non existant from what I remember from being in this particular mall a few years ago.Even after the 08 debacle..even more are gone.
and none of it has come back since 08..and even more have left since than.
large commercial real estate still closed and up for sale.
even some residential real estate that looks like it has sat since 08 or maybe even before that..very over grown and some of it with vegitation growing on the roof of commercial buildings, that would indicate many many years of neglect.
bank owned or real estate owned properties that seemed to be forgotten and left to rot.
easy to see a population drop of a very large magnatude, and a lack of heavy industry to support any real jobs.
There is no recovery, at least not from what i saw, and not in this area.Chances are , never will be.
traffic on the highway seemed diminished from what I remember, and local roads were easy to navigate due to few other vehicles
seemed to me that a once vibrant area was dead, and void of positive growth

housing is down
but sales still fairly decent
new regional dept store just opened a branch here and doing a brisk business

it all depends on what part of the country you are in

If that were the case, every 12 year old boy in America would be anxiously waiting for their Puberty Party- you know, the one with the cake, the condoms and the Playboy subscription? And just like all those Subway restaurants everywhere, there would be a Hooters in every college men’s dorm in the country. You see how ridiculous that would be? We’d never get the bbq stains out of the carpet.
Secondly, all you people with a libido pointing to the southwest like a broken compass, why can’t you quietly accept the tolerance you’ve been given and stop with these weird parades? And I am so sorry to say I know some people who would vote just to keep their welfare. It is indeed depressing. The average person is so confused, they do not know what to believe and do not have the time or mentality to think it through. They live on sound-bites. I pray everyday that God will give us a decent Leader again. The American people still have a heart for God deep inside. Under the right circustances it can show forth again. I am a professional day trader and investor. I watch the markets every hour, on the hour on every day. I trade, currencies, stocks, and metals. We are in a financial crisis BUT it is fixable. Lets not give up on america and still have hope that we can get out of this economic crunch. It is possible for the US to get out of debt. Not to say that we shouldn’t be prepared, I have enough food storage to last me for ten years and I also have enough ammo and guns to arm a small country. but to me prepping is like insurance, I have it, but hopefully I never have to use it.
