SHTFplan Editor’s Note: As our benevolent benefactors debate our future in the hallowed halls of Congress, one can’t help but wonder what would happen if the US government were to shut down for an extended period of time. Let’s be honest, if the Federal government shut down and essentially stopped operating it’d almost be a dream come true. They’d pass no more laws, no more restrictions, and they’d finally be out of our lives (and, as a side effect, the President would apparently have to do his own laundry!). However, with any such shut down would come consequences. Though they’ll probably “save us” again in the 11th hour, Brandon Smith of Alt Market explores the possibilities and after-effects should the government shut down for an extended period of time; be it today or at some point in the future. It would be painful to be sure, as tens of millions of Americans would almost immediately lose access to the social safety net that is keeping the whole thing afloat.
There is a considerable amount of debate in alternative economic circles as to whether a federal government shutdown would be a “good thing” or a “bad thing”. Frankly, even I am partially conflicted. I love to read mainstream news stories about how a shutdown in the capital would be “horrible” because Barack Obama might have to reduce the White House cleaning staff and wash his own laundry:
It’s about time that sellout bastard did something to clean up his own act. I also love the idea of the federal government out of the picture and removed from the U.S. dynamic. Americans need to learn again how to live without the nanny state, even if only for a few weeks, and what better way than to go cold turkey. That said, as much as centralized government needs to be erased from the face of the planet, there are, indeed, consequences that must be dealt with. It is foolish to believe otherwise. No social system, and I mean NO SOCIAL SYSTEM, changes without pain to the population. I am not among those that cheer a federal shutdown, because I understand that the only people to ultimately feel suffering will be average citizens, not the establishment itself. The sheeple may be ignorant and blind, but no one deserves the kind of unmitigated hellfire that could rain down upon our country if a shutdown continues for an extended period of time. We have dealt with this kind of talk before over the past few years, and it’s interesting to see the kind of cynicism that has developed over the idea of a shutdown event. After all, the last time a government shutdown occurred was at the end of 1995, lasting only a couple of weeks into 1996. The GOP has folded so many times over the U.S. budget and debt ceiling that most of the public expects they will obviously do it again. It is certainly possible that the Republicans will roll over, however, I am not so sure of that this time around. Why? Not because Obamacare is on the table. Obamacare is just a distraction. No, I’m far more interested in the circumstances surrounding the U.S. dollar.
Obamacare is designed to fail. Anyone with any financial or mathematical sense could look at the real national debt and deficit projections of the U.S. and understand that there is no money and never will be enough money to fund universal healthcare. The GOP could simply let the program take effect, sit back, and watch it crash and burn over the next three to five years. This would entail, though, watching the whole of our economy crash and burn with it.
What we have developing in front of us is the recipe for a new false paradigm. Already, the MSM is discussing the possibility of debt default and who will be responsible under such circumstances. Not surprisingly “Tea Party” conservatives have been named the primary culprits if a shutdown goes south; even former Democratic president Bill Clinton is getting in on the blame game:
All the bickering over Obamacare is fascinating, I’m sure, but lets set the Affordable Care Act aside for a moment and look at the bigger and more important picture. The private Federal Reserve Bank has just announced to much surprise a complete reversal on its suggested QE “taper” measures, resulting in a shocked and confused marketplace. If the U.S. fiscal system is stable and sound, as the Fed has been suggesting for the past year, then why continue stimulus measures at all? Could it be that most if not all positive economic numbers released by the Fed and the Labor Department are actually fake, and that investors have been duped into assuming overall growth when America is actually in an accelerated decline? Wouldn’t that be a high speed excrement storm straight out of left field!
The first day rally over the Fed announcement faded quickly, resulting in a slow bleed of the Dow ever since. The magic of Fed stimulus is wearing off, and the investment world is not happy. If I were a member of the Federal Reserve Bank, I suppose I would appreciate a large scale distraction designed to take attention away from me and my elitist club-mates as the primary culprits behind the greatest currency implosion in the history of the world.
Sadly, a government shutdown is sizable threat to the American financial system, and few people seem to get it. Perhaps because the expectation is that any shutdown would only be a short term concern. And, this assumption might be correct. But, if a shutdown takes place, and, if “gridlock” continues for an extended period of time, I have little doubt that the U.S economy will experience renewed crisis. Here’s why:
Exponential Debt
Obamacare only tops a long list of already existing “unfunded liabilities” (otherwise known as entitlement programs). These programs are not counted in the government’s official calculations of national debt or deficit spending, but they cost taxpayers money all the same. True deficit costs and national debt costs expand every year without fail. If the debt ceiling does not rise in accordance with this exponential debt, a default is inevitable. No amount of increased taxes could ever fill the black hole already created by negative government spending.
A long term government shutdown will eventually require cuts in entitlements, if not a total overhaul of certain aid programs. Imagine an end to all disability payments, including veterans disability payments. Imagine federal employee pensions put on hold for an undesignated period of time. Imagine food stamps placed on hiatus for 50 million people. Imagine how many states now rely on federal funding just to keep municipalities from bankruptcy. Get the picture now?
End Of Foreign Faith In U.S. Treasuries
In a disgusting display of propaganda, media outlet Reuters has released an article claiming that, default or not, Asian investors and central banks are “hostage” to U.S. debt:

Their argument essentially revolves around the lie that Asian investors believe an American default to be “unthinkable”. Surely, the unnamed Japanese investment source they cite as an “insider” truly represents the whole of Asia.
The reality is, the Asians (the Chinese in particular) have been preparing for a calamity in the U.S. Treasury market for years.
Most foreign investors in U.S. Treasuries have converted their long term bond holdings to short term bond holdings; meaning, they are ready to liquidate their bonds at a moment’s notice. Overall purchase levels of treasuries are either static, or falling depending on the nation involved.
China has been internationalizing its currency, the Yuan, since 2005. China has opened Yuan “clearing houses in multiple countries to allow faster convertibility of the Yuan, quietly supplanting the dollar as the world reserve currency. These clearing houses now exist in London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Kenya. The Federal Reserve and international banks like JP Morgan are heavily involved in the internationalization of the Yuan.
The assertion that Asia is somehow hostage to U.S. debt is a lie beyond all proportions. In truth, the U.S. economy is actually hostage to Asian holdings of U.S. debt. A call for a dump of U.S. treasury bonds by China, for example, in the face of a U.S. default, would immediately result in a global chain reaction ending in the destruction of the dollar as the world reserve currency. This is not speculation, this is mathematical fact. China is not going to sit back and do nothing while their investment in U.S. debt quickly disintegrates. Why would they take the chance when they could could just sell, sell, sell!
The very idea that Reuters is attempting to twist the fundamentals surrounding a default event leads me to believe a default event may be preordained.
What Will Be Defunded?
Non-essential personnel (which apparently includes Obama’s maids), will be the first to receive a pink slip from the federal government. Extra Pentagon staff, EPA staff, FDA staff, IRS staff, etc will all be cut. Good riddance. But what will follow will not be so pleasant.
If a shutdown stretches for months, expect cuts in all support programs and entitlements. Veterans disability checks, social security, Medicare, employee pensions, even the Postal Service is likely to undergo defunding. National Parks, and schools that receive federal aid will discover immediate cash-loss. In fact, any state or city that relies on federal funds should plan for the possibility that those funds will disappear.
Military cuts would be at the bottom of the list, but I would not discount the chance of that either.
It cannot be denied; an enormous subsection of the American public is dependent on federal money. If that money dries up, chaos will ensue. I don’t like it, but it is a concern.
Controlled Reaction
A long term shutdown will be catastrophe no matter how you slice it. Foreign creditors will react harshly. The bond market will see a haircut not unlike that given to investors in Greek treasuries. Austerity will become an American way of life. The only mitigating factor will be the Federal Reserve, which I believe may institute “extraordinary measures” without congressional consent in order to continue feeding stimulus into government regardless of whether the debt ceiling is raised or not. Given enough desperation, the American public might even applaud such an action and praise the Fed as “heroic”.
In this situation, the U.S. would be facing a Weimar-style currency collapse, rather than a debt default. But in either scenario, the dollar is the final target.
Unfortunately, too many economic analysts presume that the only threat to the dollar’s value is hyperinflation (these are the same people that quote the Fed’s crooked CPI numbers). But the dollar is just as vulnerable to a debt default and loss of reserve status. Devaluation seems to be inevitable regardless of the outcome of the funding debate.
The Republicans could still surrender, and even if they don’t, real damages will not be felt until after October 17th. This is plenty of time to manipulate the public into demanding more spending even when more spending is not in our best interests in the long term. Our greatest concern, though, should be whether or not the establishment is ready to pull the plug on the dollar altogether, using the debt ceiling crisis as cover in order to distract away from the involvement of international banks in the overall problem. There is no doubt given the facts at hand that America is on the edge of a terrible pyre. Is this the event that will finally trigger collapse? We’ll know more in a week…

However, many say the final version of Obamacare provides a “back door” by granting authority to “enact regulations for smooth implementation” of Obamacare.
Food Stamp Growth 75X Greater than Job Creation
“In January 2009, there were 133.56 million Americans with jobs and 31.98 million on food stamps. Today, there are 133.76 million Americans with jobs and 46.68 million on food stamps.”

It’s all a smokescreen anyway. The debt ceiling was breached months ago, everything the FedRes does in an extraordinary measure without Congressional approval, and it can still print all the counterfeit money it needs to do what it wants or needs to do and buy who it wants or needs to buy.
The corp will not shut down. If it did, the people that now depends on it will depend on each other, or die. They will begin forming communities of people and militias of the People to defend themselves from it. They will begin working together as “We the People”, and the corp will have none of that so long as it’s money is free.
Many will start fighting the wrong war and die from that mistake, but many that are not participating now will begin fighting the right one. They are well armed and prepared. Knowledgeable and pissed off. Everything the corp is afraid of from a well armed populace when it turns their guns on them.
Would it hurt if the corp shut down? Sure it would, but only because we would be left with no monetary system and a devastated economy. But the free market would come back quickly and it would not be the end of the world.
Look to Iceland to see what happens when the banksters are forcefully removed from power. In a year we would be far better off, and those who worship the government will have been removed from the equation to make room for freedom.

It is a smoke screen. Mr. Smith has a lot of good points. I would add that a gov’t shut down is a pretex to allowing more power to be gained by the oval office. If there is a lengthy shut down, elections may be delayed and with the delay in checks for retirees, military, etc.. will most likely cause the crises tptb want and need for Marshall law/anarchy.
Don’t forget, a lot of state/city/county law enforcement is funded by fed dollars. Guess what follows?

I wrote this last year because of the debacle of BO care that won’t work well at all and give people more of a pain in the backside than any series of dr quack vaccinations.

People watching the president giving his pitch on why BO care is some sort of savior to all the problems of the medical system, which there are plenty, one MIGHT think that this might not be too bad of an idea. That is until someone looks much deeper into what all actual means.
First examine the theory that competetion of all these health insurance companies will drive premiums down and save money. This sound real good, this is the bedrock idea of capitialism that more and more people offering a product or service means that prices will be as low as possible because one insurance company wants your business over another. This might work if the actual usage of the insurance was kept low. This is where the problem occurs.
Like the dependency of the welfare state, people become dependent on trying to cure their ailments through the “quick and easy fix”. People find it is far easier to simply show up for food stamps than earn an income for food. Same holds true with someone not willing to stay healthy, which requires work, exercise, and not eating garbage. The present day health care system penalizes people that overly abuse their bodies with mammouth medical costs to repair damage to their bodies. The same hand it to me on a platter people that want more and more from the government, are the same people that are unwilling to change their eating and dietary habits. What happens when people continue to get that quick and easy bandage to stop a symptom of an underlying health problem(s), rather than try to repair it and fix it? More medication and more trips to the doctor. Whom pays for this? Why all those insurance companies that cannot deny care to a high risk sick person unwilling to change their eating and health habits. What happens when there is an overwhelming number of insurance claims? The costs go through the roof.
Sure as the president talked about how low in price it is to start of BO care. The president gave his “enthusiastic” speech on all sorts of “encouraging” numbers of less cost than your cell phone costs each month for “affordable” health care. That is until the big pharmaceutical companies, that are licking their chops, can get all those new people into doctor’s offices to convice them that one little pill can cure what is giving them problems. Never is it mentioned that one little pill often has side effects that one more little pill is necessary to counteract the effects of the first little pill. The cost of medication is unbelievable, and will drive health care cost, and ultimately insurance premiums into the stratrosphere.
Another huge issue of health care is the cost of tests. Doctors love tests, because it not only gives them a better picture what is wrong, but it takes some legal burden off their heads. Tests done by a company can be used as protection against lawsuits from quackery that many doctors have fallen into, and because of all the side effects of being overly medicated. Tests can be done on a much higher regular basis under so many more people being insured. Most people actually trust the testing process and will agree without question, because they have this BO care “backing” them up. Again, rising the costs of what the insurance companies must pay. Much fear is driven into scared patients that unless they are tested, the doctor can’t treat them because they are unsure what is actually wrong. Use to be that doctors had better medical diagnostic abilities, not anymore as they feel that is not really necessary anymore. Tests are usually much higher in cost than any medication. After all, why not because BO care means you are insured for all the testing any physician wants to do. See the costs of the insurance rates rising like a surface to air missile?
So the president talks about how people that can afford health care insurance should be forced to have it. There seems to be a little problem with this with the Constitution that pretty much guarantees that the state does not have the right to force health care beyond someone’s free will to choose if they receive health care or not. You can still choose self treatment. So Supreme Court John Roberts agreed that BO care is nothing but a tax that the state can oppose on everyone, they have that right. Okay you have to have car insurance to drive a car. You can still choose to NOT drive a car and can make that choice to walk or take the bus or train. So the paradox begins. If you choose to not be treated by anything in the health care industry, then where does that forced tax apply to you?
Back to the core issue of BO care. The president knows that WHEN health care costs use the system to MILK insurance companies, and insurance companies to stay in business have to raise their costs of insuring people that there is a “simple” answer. It is called government subsidies to the insurance companies to keep the cost of medical insurance “affordable” to everyone that might vote in large enough numbers to elect members of congress to dump BO care. The government pays farmers not to grow too many crops to manipulate prices, why not the health insurance companies along with them. Just get helicopter ben to fire up more of the printing presses and borrow more. A 17 trillion dollar debt can easily be moved up to 27 trillion, or why not just make it a nice even 100 trillion. After all it is just other people’s money that never has to be paid back. Just keep raising the debt ceiling and paying for a welfare state that is addictive to more and more of the population each year.
Unless there is some type of cap on how much health care treatment costs, BO care must fail. It a candy store trip for big pharmaceutical companies as their “MEDS” can now be paid for by a far larger number of “customers”. Everyone that works in the health care field can now test and test people over and again to make “absolutely sure” that they are sick or not. Doctors now are guaranteed to be paid at least 80% of their costs, in some case much higher. No reason not to treat as many people unnecessarily as possible. More routine check-ups that are mosly or fully paid for. You might catch a major problem or not. The patient now can be assured that they will be treated for any problem, no reason now to be healthy as that bag of junk food sure tastes good. Everyone can get their quick fix’em MEDS from your friend and mine, the big pharm companies.
The looming cloud to “happy” times over the rainbow has some real issues. First whom is going to pay for this? Eventually foreign countries are no longer going to accept the Banana Republic U.S. dollar as collateral for any type of loans that might not be paid, not even the interest owed each month. This is showing evidence as more and more OPEC countries are considering selling their oil and natural gas using a basket currency of other monies rather than the using the U.S. dollar exclusively. Precious metals are high on the method of payment. Any money or loan must have something to back it up, again collateral. The U.S. dollar without anything to guarantee payment means not an A ++ rating, it means an A or worse B or C rating. It means massive uncontrolled inflation in the U.S. as the dollar loses world value. Again, whom pays for BO care and as a matter of fact all the other freebies programs?
IF the U.S. government cannot support the influx of health costs that will hit the insurance companies that cannot refuse high risk people, then whom pays the cost? You guessed it, all those people earning a paycheck and paying taxes. What about all those on food stamps that aren’t paying taxes. They are guaranteed health care from the government. By George, it sure seems like it is more profitable to not be working as the cost of health care premiums are too much along with all the other high costs of food, gasoline, rent, other insurance, etc. etc. Welfare means you don’t have to do anything, just exist, and most or all of what you need is paid for, and make sure you vote for all those politicians that support welfare as your gravy train depends on it.
BO care is something that will help bankrupt the country, along with all the other government pork expenses, as health care needs has helped bankrupt people by the millions and continues to. Just because you force someone to pay the absurd high costs of medical care doesn’t mean it makes the problem go away. The real problem is that the initial costs of being treated. Until people as a nation decide that health care is ONLY for the rare time when you actually get sick, and decide as a people to avoid being sick by practicing being healthy, the system is broke and won’t work. Price regulations would not work because people would just use the health care system even more so, and be doped up with every chemical medication imaginable to even a higher extent. Health care starts with being healthy and using personal preventative care on their own bodies and avoiding the doctor. This will not be the case with BO care and the costs after a year or two will start to show this all too well. People have to start to free themselves of the government dependency, and this will not start with this health care system that will ultimately cost everyone a lot. One does not usually overly abuse something that costs money to repair, and one has to ask why don’t people use this philosopy on their own body and drive health care costs down by NOT being sick and in need of that temporary fix at the doctor’s office.

A population kept in poverty and forced to work obscene amounts of time for an obscenely low wage will lack the energy and the resources to rise up. That is until they become massively desperate, as they would should the food stamp program go belly-up. At that point you will have all these scared, hungry, cold and desperate people in the streets and there will be violence and lots of it. I live within an hour’s drive from the border. Therefore it stands to reason I might be up to my eyeballs in refugees once things go south. And no offence, I’m none too keen on the idea.
Especially since they will be a drain on resources on my side do the border and, once they see what they get isn’t what they conjure they are entitled to they will do what displaced masses have done countless time in history: they will take it out on the locals.

OK heres a quick prep tip… If you have limited power to run a refrigerator (gen or small solar) put water in whatever jugs will fit in the freezer part and freeze them while the fridge is operating. When you shut down the power take out the frozen jugs and put them on the top shelf of the refer part with your food below it. This acts like a cooler and will keep your food cold as long as the ice hold out. Also keep one in the freezer part with a jug of ice. This should cut at least 40% of your runtime for the fridge. When you turn the fridge on again just repeat. I have used this method for years and it works great. 🙂

Martial law may soon thereafter will declared without a single shot fired over here. If the U.S. gets involved in this, then all of this will not even matter.

@ Anon. You asked how to see the earthquakes and where they are likely to occur using a globe and a tape measurer or piece of string. Treat the globe as you would like a basketball, let the entire string or tape go from one point all the way around the globe like some measuring the circumference of a near round object. You will see how the curve takes the tape or string around where you wouldn’t think it would go. Future earthquakes follow this arc, give you take a few degrees sometimes off the path.
For example, take the Reykjanes Ridge earthquakes of last week and put the tape or string as flat as possible on the globe and connect New Zealand with this and you will see how the path travels through the New Madrid fault and down through Central Mexico. If you conect it all away around the world it should also travel right through the Red Sea region. These are areas that could be sending energy waves back to the Reykjanes Ridge. These areas are possible places for earthquakes, as shown with the 6.7 that just hit far north New Zealand like it should have. Always keep the string or tape as flat as you can on a globe and even if it travels over the poles.
I also use past earthquake activity wheneever these plate boundaries have these earthquakes. Then I cross section the energy arcs to try to triangulate the most likely places to have a major quake. The earthquake on the S. Mid Atlantic Ridge showed 2 mega quakes, the one in Chile and Japan that occurred after this same spot was hit. I have not seen this before. If you connect that spot in the Atlantic, using a tape or string on a globe with Chile and then Japan you can see the other potential areas around this arc where a mega quake could soon hit. India Himalaya region is directed connected, again using a globe, from point A- Atlantic Ridge, Point B- Chile , Point C- Japan, Point d- India. There is a potential for this region to a have a super mega quake. As in 9.6 or maybe tops 9.7. This could cause serious problems with the rest of the plates of the world, especially the Asian/North America plates that the San Andreas, New Madrid, and Cascadia ride of the North American plate. Something to watch, as the new North Mid Atlantic Ridge quake today says more major earthquakes to follow by Oct.17, almost a 100% chance of this.

If we get passed Thanksgiving with no serious event, then we could back off to the normal level of always being prepared in a waiting mode.

The older the bean the “harder” they are and takes longer to cook…
Example:
Awhile ago I got out some 10+ year old beans to make bean dip… approx. 2 lbs… Put them in an elec “pressure cooker” covered with water…
It took 3 (three) 45 minute cycles, after each cycle adding more water to get those dang things cooked..
That’s 2 1/2 hours in a “pressure cooker”, how long would it take to soak and cook… possibly over a campfire…. Gawd… I don’t even want think about it…Won’t go there…

How were yours stored? I have older beans, peas, etc. that are re-sealed in airtight bags, but I have also heard that old beans take forever to re-hydrate.

so go to the store and buy some canned Veg, Meat, Fruit. These will last you a long time. It is your call but I just opened a can of peas that I had set aside in 1999, and found it to be just as good as a can from 2011.
Get some bags of sugar, salt, rice and beans. Store them in a air tight container. So mice and air will not get to them.
The biggest thing you need is WATER PURIFICATIONS EQUIPMENT. Iodine, Bleach will help to purify your water. READ UP ON IT TO SEE HOW TO DO IT. Too much can kill you.
Solar yard lights will charge your AA and AAA batteries and will give you some light at night in your house. Get the ones with white lights not yellow doesn’t work well in the house. The spot light works the best just shine it at a mirror.

Also, concerning the bleach…I’ve read that if it is more than 2 years old, don’t use it to purify water because its no longer any good. The problem is, chlorox bottles no longer put expiration dates on the bottles so you don’t know how old the stuff is!!
About iodine, the taste, I heard is horrible. A remedy for the awful taste is to mix it with vitamin C… that’s from a website about this guy who travels to Africa and uses only Katadyn water filters and prefers Puri tablets (with cholorine) to purify his water… the problem is, I can’t find these “puri whatever” tablets.
You have to take the solar light apart. I just took one of mine (a cheap one from the dollar store) apart. It has a 4-pin integrated circuit, a resistor, and an LED on a tiny circuit board. This is connected with blue and white wires to the solar cell. It is connected with black and red wires to an AAA NiCad battery.
This means that you can remove the battery and insert other AAA batteries to be charged. Also, you can wire the battery holder terminals to any other 1.5V rechargeable battery. When you set it in the sun, I would cover the battery so it wouldn’t get too hot. I suppose 8 or 9 solar lights could trickle charge a 12V battery. It would take a long time though.

As far as the bleach goes, it does break down and eventually becomes salt water as the chlorine escapes. It can take much less than 2 years depending on where it’s kept. Whenever you buy anything that has no expiration date, you should add the date you bought it using a black marker. I have found that the dates are hard to read on some products, so I mark them also.
Solar yard light have a AA or AAA batteries in them. Just remove them after about 5 hours of direct sunlight and put in a rechargeable AA or AAA battery back in them for the remainder of the day. I’ve been doing this for about 5 years now. We had a Tornado strike our area and we were out of power for about 6 days. I used these light to light up my house for that time period.
I took a solar light apart one day and found that it just runs on AA and AAA batteries.

The reason bleach doesn’t have an expiration date is because it does not expire in any practical amount of time, nor is it consumable. I’ve had arguments around here with people who think it disappears from the bottle and quits working after a certain period of time.
If nothing else, it concentrates with age. I’ve had bleach over a decade old and it was still bleach (although it burnt the hell outta my carpet when I spilled some of it). If you put bleach in your preps, it will sit there unharmed for years if unopened.

The key to storing anything dried is to keep things dry and protected from the air. Look up “dry canning” as one way to vacuum seal well-dried foods.

I get the bulk of my supplies from beprepared.com and honeyvillegrain.com. Pleasanthillgrain.com has several lines of canned meats, cheese, butter, ghee, canned bacon, etc., none of which is cheap but very good food and long shelf life.

I lean toward having dehydrated onions, potatoes, carrots, and celery and any canned meat we like. You can make a big pot of stews, casseroles etc. with these few simple ingredients. Very baland so be sure to stockpile lots of seasonings spices and extra water.

Best food staples are beans, rice, unprocessed wheat. Store in airtight containers if you have them. Our local doughnut shop puts out their empty buckets of glazing, etc., for $1 each, they’re pretty good.
Store in cool, dry place, not damp or cold.
You can get the big cans of dried foods at WalMart or other places, get some of the dried vegetables and fruits, and the dried milk. It’s not expensive.
Rotate your canned stuff in and out.
Forgot to mention salt, sugar, and honey. These keep essentially forever. A year’s supply of each of these is about 20 pounds per person, at minimum, and salt is used for more than seasoning, so double that amount.
Spices are also a necessity, to flavor bland food.
Big question, short fast answer, there are lots of lists out there, just start looking, try LDS Church. But assuming you want to start fast and cheap; some things last nearly forever: Sugar, White Rice, Bouillon, Salt, COCOA powder, unground Pepper, TVP, baking powder, Wheat. Kept dry and cool, they can last longer than you do. Notice you have all the ingredients to make bread and other stuff except fats and oils, they do go bad in a few years, A good old cookbook is also useful and a grain grinder. Go buy big bottles of vitamins, Ibuprofen, antiacids. Figure out what you need for water and you are already ahead of 95% of the people. Cheap Good luck

Well the antacids I keep are just crushed limestone, I suppose you could hit somebody on the head with a large chunk and hurt them, but with the tablets you would have to whack the Hxxx out of them for a long time. With the painkillers, I don’t know of any of them I’d recommend by the thousands, but you can bet hurts and other stuff are going to show up big time in a SHTF condition and I’d suggest you be ready. I’d rather grow my own poppies but the DEA frowns on them, and I don’t know where to get seeds.

With the fruits and nuts stick em in a seal a meal bag with an oxygen absorber and a silica gel pack then vacuum seal i usually do that then seal a few of them into another bag,
The grains you can buy already sealed 5 gal buckets
I like white wheat, corn, and white rice
All can make flour or tortillas and all last a long time
Fruit and grains are the hardest to grow but are good staples

I am big on dry beans and rice. Any canned goods will do also. Don’t forget to buy some seed for your garden. I place all of my dry goods in 5 gallon buckets from Home depot. Mylar bags will keep them for 25 years or more.
Teen prepper: Check with your local LDS Church. Ask for direction there. They have all the answers for food prep.

I work at WalMart, I stock food on the isles, yes it is part time. I used to work at the phone company, was laid off, I graduated college. I took an exam to get my job at the phone company that 300 others could not pass. Anyway, here I am, I did this on purpose, kinda like our government and those that want our destruction do things on purpose. My purpose was to be close to the food that I know will be worth more than all your gold or ammo combined. I have figured out ways to take this food almost for free, not stealing, but paying attention to the sales and knowing the prices. I developed a system to figure prices and when they will be at their lowest this gives me an advantage of when to buy(I can hide them in the back) The products I am picking and buying have a long shelf life and also if you do go past a little longer than the expiration date, they may be rubbery, but they will still be edible. It beats gnawing on your daughters legs. Also WalMart also sells dry storage foods now, so I can use my employee discounts and get the best deals that I can from them. I also use it as a place to gauge the system(Amerika) to see if I can find some inside information about something that the government is planning or whatnot. And YES they are, they just recently sent a memo to all the store managers, the government? Why would the government do that? Duh! Anyway, I have not been able to get a copy of it. I have seen it from far away, and I acted as if I am uninterested. I hope that soon, when the eye in the eye at Walmart is preoccupied with some idiot shoplifter, I will be able to print out that memo. I will share it.

My Walmart sells freeze-dried “survival” food buckets and ammo. Honestly, I would be lying if I said that I didn’t think about doing exactly what you are before. It’s a brilliant idea. Congrats on acting on it!
Side note: I did manage to get a bunch of packages of beans for approx $0.25 each on clearance there. They don’t expire until 2016 I believe. Anyone could and probably should look at the clearance food when they go to the store.

Im not gonna participate. I have no idea what the fine will be or what will be deemed as punishment, I just know I have only been to the doctor a few times and at present my health care cost are zero.
I disagree, sooner or later the US Gov. can not continue on this current course, it will run out of money. The social system used to be run locally, when some lay about did not want to support himself, he was not supported with SNAP/EBT payments from DC, it was the local community that had to support him. The Town Overseers of the Poor. Those that were in need were taken care of, those who could work but did not want to, had to choose between starving or working. Because the money to support them was taken by property taxes from their neighbors.
There is still some wealth in the land, but the US government is continuing to mis-allocate it for social programs. Because many reasons including the fact that the current regime is preventing wealth creation, there is little if no economic growth. the longer this goes on the more money that goes to the Govt. the less wealth for the rest of the country.
A long term shutdown at this point will force a re localization of social programs, back to state and local governments. While there is still some wealth in the hinterlands, in a decade or so when the system finally collapses on its own, it will do so only after absorbing the wealth of the local communities, keeping the Federal spending train on track will only help DC, the Imperial city of Bread and Circuses will enjoy prosperity while the rest of the country becomes a mere shadow of itself, one big Detroit.
At that point, in the near future, when the federal social system collapses there will be no local resources to fall back on. It will, like the Roman Empire after the fall of Rome, shatter the country, the disparate parts will have to depend on their residual wealth and it that has all been diverted to the Imperial City (DC)

I have seen a numerous amount of white fuzzy caterpillars approx. 1 inch long all over the place, including crawling up my storm doors, porches, all in the grass—-with black heads.
What are these critters and are they poisonous?.
I live in NC and have not noticed this before except for bag worms in my peach trees, which I remove or burn out.
Are fuzzy worms a sign of a bad winter? I am real careful not to come in contact with them.

They are “web worms”, and right or schedule. Fruit/nut bearing trees and other varieties have much more to fear than you. They make huge webs and devour the leaves. No bite or sting, just a potential detriment to desirable trees.
Moth larvae with a voracious appetite. Here in Texas, Pecan trees are the primary target.
Trust me 4yp, these are web worms and totally harmless to anything other than tree leaves.
Every snake is not a threat…but every snake is considered a threat. Web worms are harmless to humans. Other than potential food supply via producing orchards.

I would stay away from fuzzy worms. I saw a photo of someone in my area that touched one, and he had large welts all over his chest. I don’t know what kind of worm, just that it was fuzzy.
Winter conditions are supposed to be foretold by woolly worms. They are about 2 inches long, about the size of your little finger, black at each end and brown in the middle. The smaller the brown band, the colder the winter will be. I haven’t seen any yet this year, but if I do, I will take notes and see how the winter turns out. I hear it’s going to be a bear anyway.
Might be a type of saddleback caterpillar. The hairs are poisonous stingers. Burning sensation.

What is funny to me is that everyone is so scared of what will happen if the government shuts down. This (at 17 trillion in debt) is only a small taste of what it will be like at…say…27 trillion. It is also interesting that people are scared of this event were it to happen today, when it will indeed happen at some point in the future. Shitty/scary times are on our path. Do people really think we can go on forever without paying the bills? Or do they think we are actually all of the sudden going to increase our GDP to the point where we pay things off?

Also there may be unintended consequences of this shut down my Agency has informed us to be prepared for a furlough of at LEAST 21 days . DHS has informed us NOT TO REPORT if the shutdown occurs on 12:00 am Tuesday morning . Also we will not be compensated for the furlough time or be allowed to use vacation time.

One final evidence is that the US Treasury claims that about $2T was printed in both 2009 and 2010. Yet, there are no paper currencies in existence that date after 2009. If you don’t believe, then check for yourself. Find one.
Thus, if they printed $2T in 2010 and none of those paper bills are in circulation, then where did it go?

The collapse has begun of paper currency. The electronic currency (only) has probably been ushered in 2010, right under our noses. Therefore, we will not see anymore currency with series dated 2010 and beyond. The paper currency floating now is probably it.
I have a Bank CD with $50,000. It expired. I told the clerk I wanted it in cash (I was joking). She said they didn’t have that much now and I would have to wait a few days to get it. Well I did the dumb thing and took $5000 and then re-issued the rest for another 11 months. It is due this Nov. I am paying off my house with it.

Another major earthquake just a little off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. 6.4 USGS, but 6.7 from the seismographs in Australia. This was the second major earthquake correctly forecasted on comment #2435660 on the Visa Goes Anti-Gun article. Like New Zealand, the Kamchatka Peninsula was another point to look for as an extremely dangerous area for a major shaker. This means that mega quake could be coming as all the precursor quakes pointed to several major quakes. I am very suspect of India right now for a huge earthquake. The last massive one occurred back in 1950. Don’t forget Alaska and the Pacific Northwest that remain in the hot zone until Oct.17. Two already checked off the list, a third is likely coming.

Knowing what I know about the US government’s strategy, it will play out like this: they will extend the debt and then they will make it go global. Two things had to be done first before they could make this move. One, was to sweep across the planet with bases, black ops sites, rendition facilities, torture chambers etc. This has mostly been completed. The second was to use the Internet and the global spy grid to track and trap the entire world’s population and economy, drain it of all good ideas, and then lock that bitch down under US trade rules. This is done.
So, we are now ready for the next phase: everyone in the world is going to have to shake their booty and ‘work for the Yankee dollar’ as that old Cuban song used to say.

I would like to remind us all that even though we totally disagree with Pres. Obama’s policies, the Bible teaches that we should respect authority. It is very difficult for me, too, to respect this president. I try to pray for him. But, please don’t call him names such as bast . . . That makes this forum and the people who read it look bad. I can’t stand his policies, but let’s uphold a sense of decency in the way WE act.
Also, while I am totally against socialism, I do think of all the common people who are dependent on food stamps, etc. b/c they cannot get a decent job, etc. It is going to hurt a lot of people in this little town where I live. There are no decent jobs here.
The bible teaches us to respect HONORABLE authority, not tyranny. You should read Chuck Baldwin’s book on the lies surrounding Romans 13, and educate yourself before it’s too late.
