According to The National Association for Amateur Radio (ARRL), elements of the US Department of Defense (DOD) will simulate a “communications interoperability” training exercise across the United States on November 04-06. The announcement released on October 24 has not been widely distributed to the media, because the drill is simulating a total grid collapse and could spark public fear.
Explained by Army MARS Program Manager Paul English,
“This exercise will begin with a national massive coronal mass ejection event which will impact the national power grid as well as all forms of traditional communication, including landline telephone, cellphone, satellite, and Internet connectivity,”
In July, we warned about the US government quietly preparing for a massive coronal mass ejection with the passage of an Executive Order – “Coordinating Efforts to Prepare the Nation for Space Weather Events”.
Here is snippet of section 1 of the executive order:
Space weather events, in the form of solar flares, solar energetic particles, and geomagnetic disturbances, occur regularly, some with measurable effects on critical infrastructure systems and technologies, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite operations and communication, aviation, and the electrical power grid. Extreme space weather events — those that could significantly degrade critical infrastructure — could disable large portions of the electrical power grid, resulting in cascading failures that would affect key services such as water supply, healthcare, and transportation. Space weather has the potential to simultaneously affect and disrupt health and safety across entire continents. Successfully preparing for space weather events is an all-of-nation endeavor that requires partnerships across governments, emergency managers, academia, the media, the insurance industry, non-profits, and the private sector.

Back to the exercise on November 04-06, the US Department of Defense headquarters entity will work with the US Army and US Air-Force MARS organizations and the Amateur Radio community to request status reports for 3,143 US counties. During the exercise, communication frequencies will use HF NVIS, VHF, UHF, and non-internet linked Amateur Radio repeaters.
In addition, Army MARS Program Manager Paul English said,
We want to continue building on the outstanding cooperative working relationship with the ARRL and the Amateur Radio community,” English said. “We want to expand the use of the 60-meter interop channels between the military and amateur community for emergency communications, and we hope the Amateur Radio community will give us some good feedback on the use of both the 5-MHz interop and the new 13-MHz broadcast channels as a means of information dissemination during a very bad day scenario.

The writing is on the wall of what is coming through an executive order and DOD drills.

This is a very wise exercise by the government. I participated in this same exercise, Commex 16-4, last year around this time. I was able to make contact with MARS Operators in Oregon and Nevada on 60 Meters with a wire antenna 20 feet of the ground.
All forms of long range communications depend on complicated infrastructure. If we were ever hit with a CME or EMP that infrastructure would be down for months or years.
HF Radio, requires no complicated infrastructure. All that is needed to communicated is a HF Radio, 12 volts and a wire antenna that you can throw up in a tree. The signal travels long distances by bouncing off the Ionosphere.
Communicating Ham Radio operators from every county in America, is the only way government officials would know the condition of the country after such an event.
HF Ham radio works so well that it was banned for civilian use in both WW1 and WW2 so that spys could be tracked down.
I don’t see anything nefarious in this exercise. Hams are involved in emergency communications missions throughout the year. During the recent hurricane in Puerto Rico, the Red Cross flew in scores of Ham Radio operators to establish reliable communications on outlying areas.
When all else fails, Ham radio works.

Hmmm. It’s been awhile since people have been lined up around the block for flu shots. And the panic that ensued when the shots ran out due to a shortage. Not surprisingly, an expert has just come out and said this flu season could get really, really ugly.

Red dot will be affected because it is an electronic device. Tritium is a radio active gas tube with no electronic controller so it will be ok.
trit sights will, they work off of tritium illumination, not a circuit. Red dots, probably not.

Don’t know if it will affect tiny circuits. From what I understand it will generate an electric field in metal. So the more wire it has the more prone to an EMP it will be.
Its the strength of the current generated thats the issue. Plug a typical 110 household appliance into a 220 outlet and see the same effect, on a much larger scale 🙂
Introducing more current than a circuit can handle will cook it like a blown fuse.

its not, honestly. The HAM community does similar exercises on a regular basis, work with DoD and emergency services to improve services, etc. The drill isnt even original, its one that generally is performed yearly the last few years.

I read that in the 1990’s and during Bush’s administration they collected #10 cans and it escapes me what the contents were, I want to say freeze dried food/dehydrated, but also GP Tents Large,ex-large, Cots and such and at that time, it was speculated that The Sun was going cold, quite, a solar minimum in which such times, the worst earthquakes occurred also.

During part of the year I live in (liberal) Olympia Wa. There have been several often violent protests and snowflake acting out sessions, around the capitol building and Evergreen State College. In spite of all the publicity, the only problems are concentrated in these area. The overwhelming rest of the community is quiet and uneventful. I would say to avoid urban areas and colleges on these so called protest days.
dWhy bother with drills when the real thing is going on in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands? The more you see of that crisis, the more likely you are to buy solar power systems and gas generatora.
