A deadly fungal infection has been impacting the state of Washington. Candida auris has resurfaced, and “experts” claim that it’s only a matter of time before this fungus infects people in all 50 states.

So far, four people in Washington state have tested positive this month for a rare fungal infection that can be deadly. This cluster of infections comes as Candida auris continues to spread in the United States. Alarmingly, case numbers have risen every year since 2016.

A New “Urgent Threat” To Human Health: Candida Auris Fungal Infection

The pathogen is resistant to some common antifungal medications, and it tends to infect people with weakened immune systems, according to a report by NBC News.  It’s often detected among hospital patients who use catheters, breathing tubes, or feeding tubes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website, C. auris can cause infections in different parts of the body such as in the bloodstream, open wounds, and ears. The symptoms depend on the location and severity of the C. auris infection. Symptoms may be similar to symptoms of an infection caused by bacteria. There is not a common set of symptoms specific to C. auris infections.

If a patient is showing symptoms of an infection of unknown cause, a healthcare provider may collect a clinical sample, like blood or urine. They usually test for many types of infections including those caused by bacteria and the results may show that the patient has C. auris.

In general, C. auris is not a threat to healthy people. However, a recent human prospective study showed that 88% of adult Americans are metabolically “unfit,” making them not that healthy. And Ben Bikman, Ph. D., a Utah professor and a leading metabolic scientist knows just the culprit. “It’s simply our diet,” said Bikman. Not to mention almost (a little over 42%) of American adults are considered obese while 69% are overweight.  As a society, we are wildly unhealthy, to say the least, which means C. auris could have a big impact on Americans.

These stats show that any new viral, bacterial, or fungal infection could be damaging to a large segment of the American population. Never in history has a society been so overfed and undernourished as Americans today.
