    In November 2016, a very concerning report — Glyphosate: Unsafe On Any Plate — was released by The Detox Project and Food Democracy Now!, raising the alarm of the high levels of glyphosate in the US food supply and the (deliberate?) low levels of awareness of its associated health risks.

    Soon after its release, we brought Dave Murphy, executive director of Food Democracy Now!, on the podcast to explain the explosive findings within this report on the world’s most-used herbicide (more commonly known by its retail brand: Roundup). We asked: Are we being poisoned in the pursuit of profit?

    As happened in past decades with the alcohol and tobacco industries, the glyphosate report added compelling evidence that profits have indeed taken a priority over consumer safety in our food production system — and as public health concerns mounted, Big Ag started circling its wagons and attacking the questioners rather than embracing open scrutiny.

    But last month, the tables turned. In a landmark upset ruling, Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller was ruled to be carcinogenic, and the company’s attempt to hide this fact from consumers made it guilty of acting “with malice or oppression”. Monsanto’s new parent company Bayer was ordered to pay the plaintiff, a former school groundskeeper now dying of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, $289 million in damages.

    Will this court ruling restrict the use of glyphosate going forward? Or will it be de-fanged upon appeal? What else has been learned about the health impacts of glyphosate in our food since the 2016 report? What is the latest science telling us?

    To address these important questions and more, we welcome Dave Murphy back on the program.

    When I look at the damages that glyphosate does to the human gut biome, I ask folks: What’s worse: cancer or the destruction of your immune system?

    There’s eighteen to twenty million people in America that have gluten intolerance. And really, they’re not gluten intolerant. What they’re intolerant to is the pesticide glyphosate that’s sprayed on wheat, oat and barley as a pre-harvest dessicating agent. Scientists have studied the gut microbiome – your stomach is your second brain. There’s a gut-brain axis, and glyphosate really significantly disrupts the microbiome in humans just like it disrupts the microbiome of the soil.

    So the ironic thing is while farmers are spraying Roundup on their fields to kill weeds, they’re actually destroying their soil fertility over the long term. Scientists in the Midwest that have shown that Roundup and glyphosate are linked to serious crop diseases like sudden death syndrome in soybeans and also Goss’s wilt corn which can lead to a 40-70% loss of those farmers’ crops when it becomes widespread. The thing is, if it destroys the microbiome in the soil and it impacts those crops’ health, it’s also impacting the human gut microbiome of the folks who eat those crops.

    A number of studies have come out since we last talked in 2016. One is by the Ramazzini Institute, which is a fairly famous cancer review agency in Italy. They just came out with a study linking EMFs in cell phone radiation to changes in human genes and being harmful to humans. Last fall they came out with a thirteen-week preliminary study that showed that in pregnant rats fed glyphosate, their rat pups’ microbiome is disrupted while they’re in the womb. For any mother whp’s pregnant right now or who’s eating food that’s not organic, that should be very concerning.

    And that corresponds to a study that was published last year in Indiana where the scientists did a cohort review of a hundred pregnant women in Indiana. They found that women who had the highest levels of glyphosate in their urine also had the worst birth outcomes. So that means they had still-births, miscarriages, and low birth weights. And when we interviewed one of the doctors who had been part of that study, he was absolutely flabbergasted that the U.S. government is allowing this chemical to be used in such a widespread way that endangers human health.

      2. The court case had about as much science in it as you’d find in a Democrat political convention. I really don’t believe anybody when it comes to this and other similar subjects( DDT, Salt, Cholesterol, et al). It is so political it is almost a religion,
        and I don’t worship humans. You can live whatever lives you want and eat all the crap food you want be it organic or junk. I really don’t care. I don’t believe any of you. I use Roundup on weeds. I raise organic beef, veggies, and fruit and doesn’t taste any different than GMO crap I could buy at Safeway. I’m quite healthy. I raise stuff as a preparation for when eco-nuts and Democrats eff-up our society so bad, smart people need to go Galt.
        I’m a retired engineer. I like facts and data. Not some touchy, feely, crud.
        Most my family elders drank like fish, smoked like chimneys, ate junk food, lived pretty hedonistic lives and they all lived into the mid 80’s to early 90’s. I’ll take buttered Spinach, Porterhouse steak, sautéed mushrooms, Jasmine rice, and a six pack of Dos Equis, over Kale, Tofu burger, olive oil, and green tea any-day.

          No the foods raised organically won’t taste any different but the nutrition will be. Like you I’d rather have my buttered veggies, sautéed mushrooms, etc. over tofu. Kale is great in small amount in a salad or done up in a smoothie.

          My ancestry ran to farmers and gardeners but they all liked alcohol to some level. All the women cooked well so no need for junk food; everyone was sufficiently well padded. LOL And they all lived good long lives into their 80s and more.

          Oh, I agree with you on the salt, cholesterol, etc as being crud. The pharmaceuticals come with too many side effects including death to be worth dragging home on the end of a string.

          • Lab have tested soil repeatedly sprayed with Roundup and other pesticides/herbicided..they have been found to have no nutrients whatsoever.
            What does that mean for us? We are eating unhealthy/non-nutrient foods. We are satisfying our hunger and wondering why we are all sick so much??

          You are an engineer, not a biologist. The problem is that there is so much corruption in science, medicine, and food that it is hard for anyone to know what is safe to eat. Because you are healthy and have good genes doesn’t make you a better judge of food safety. I have friends who are allergic to the point of death if they accidently eat the wrong thing. Where you might be able to eat nails, it doesn’t make it ok for everyone. Good Luck with your Round-up. I hope for your sake it is safer than what people say. Which is that it is a cause of Cancerous tumors. I really don’t know who is telling the truth and who is not. For me, I err on the side of caution.

          We routinely served Porterhouse steaks and people loved to eat at our home. That is good eatin’. Don’t you like spinach salad?

        • The biggest issue grillin’ steaks is the butchers cut them too thin. This is why it is far better to buy in bulk and control the thickness yourself.

          Do that and use genuine hardwood charcoal. It burns HOT. It takes some getting used to. Use a charcoal chimney for turning it to coals.

          If you do that, it’s like stepping back in the past to 1970. Great steaks can routinely be eaten.

          People are weird now. They don’t understand marbleing of fat is essential and dry aging beef. They all want filet mignon which is expensive…it’s flavorful but too soft.

      3. The weeds and insects will adapt to our chemicals, as bacteria and viruses. Can we stay ahead ? Forever? HIV has been adapting to the cocktails, Airborne someday?

      6. Consider the average American today. I read of a Mother who called 911 because she’d found her kid eating ants. The responder told her not to be too concerned. Ants are not normally indigestible or dangerous to consume. But that same emergency worker told the Mom to get her to the hospital quick upon hearing that the same parent had dosed her child with ant-killer. Such is the intelligence we’re talking about here.

      7. As I have mentioned before, a neighbor asked me that since I have a green thumb, could I tell him why he couldn’t get his pansies to grow in the area around his house? I told him it was because he sprayed the area with Round Up. It took 6 or 8 years of not spraying before anything would grow there again. I don’t use any type of chemicals around my home because I am extremely airway sensitive to any and all chemicals after an accidental exposure to a known carcinogenic chemical at a pharmaceutical plant where I worked. A person cannot keep bombarding their body with bad food, chemicals, air pollution etc. without some harmful repercussions down the road later in life. You can choose had painful you want your last days to be.

        • Monsanto just takes all the toxic waste leftovers, and dumps into a big vat, mixes it up, then bottles it, slaps a label on it, and its called round-up.

          Crack addicts do the same thing, toss all sorts of toxic BS into a jug, then dry it out and call it crack. Except crack makers get put in prison, Monsanto make billions.

      9. You could always eat the weeds. After all, many of them were brought to America to be cultivated and for the table or else as medicinals.

        • Or pick them and feed them to the chickens! A properly prepared and routinely amended garden bed really produces very few weeds… I think I’ve weeded a total of three times this growing season? Last time was a month ago, and there aren’t any new weeds big enough/abundant enough to be worth pulling yet!
