The latest comments from Dallas Federal Reserve President Richard Fisher at the House of Finance in Frankfurt, Germany would have been considered blogosphere doom & gloom and fear mongering just a couple of years ago:
The U.S. debt situation is at a “tipping point,” Dallas Federal Reserve Bank President Richard Fisher said on Tuesday, and urged the U.S. central bank to refrain from any further stimulus measures.
“If we continue down on the path on which the fiscal authorities put us, we will become insolvent. The question is when,” Fisher said in a speech at the University of Frankfurt.
Fisher, seen by economists as one of the most hawkish policymakers within the Fed, said that although debt-cutting measures would be painful, he expected the U.S. to take the necessary actions.
“The short-term negotiations are very important. I look at this as a tipping point.”
He said the U.S. economy was now growing under its own steam, but voiced his concerns about building global inflation pressures and said it was now time for the central bank to stop pumping out extra support.
“The Fed has done enough, if not too much, and we should do no more.. In my opinion no further accommodation is necessary after June either by tapering off the bottom of treasuries or by adding another tranche of purchases outright.”

“The real question is when do we stop accommodation.”
“We need to continue to discuss the exit policy… but before you can tighten you have to stop accommodating,” he said.
The problem, of course, is that path on which our fiscal authorities have put us will not change. While we hear talk of spending cuts, they are but a drop in the bucket compared to what really needs to happen. While pundits would describe recent spending cuts of $6 Billion from the federal budget as unprecedented and a step in the right direction , in the grand scheme of things, they mean absolutely nothing considering our 2011 deficit will likely exceed $1.5 trillion and our overall national debt and commitments over the next 25 years are some $200 trillion. The Fed, as Mr. Fisher points out, is accommodating the US government spenders by purchasing around $75 billion a month, that we know of, in US Treasury debt.
Insolvency will become a mainstream media keyword, as first we’ll see local and state governments go bankrupt, and then, the US Federal Government itself. The other option, and in our view the most likely outcome, is that the US will not default on it’s debt, but this will only be possible with more monetary expansion, leading to more inflation and the real possibility of hyperinflation.
While Mr. Fisher argues that the economy is running under its own steam, we must humbly disagree. Any removal of Fed stimulus and liquidity will cause the house of cards to come falling down, and we simply don’t see a change in Fed or US government policy anytime soon.
There really is no easy way out of this. It’s going to hurt, one way or the other.
Without question we are at a tipping point, and there is also no doubt in my mind we are going to tip over the cliff.
The Fed is unwilling/unable to raise rates and stop further QE. We are going to go through stagflation on our way to hyperinflation.
Our debt is too massive and the Fed is too aligned with Wall St. for it to raise rates.

You do not have to be a rocket scientist to understand the simple fact that debt eventually has to be repaid – or bankruptcy is the result. You borrow, you pay.

The idea that they think we are close to the tipping point just goes to show how out of touch they remain. Like the other day when the comment was made that the iPad2 was priced just like the iPad and a reporter made the comment about not being able to eat and iPad.
I’ve a sad feeling that at $14 trillion in debt we’ve already passed the tipping point.
I’d be very surprised if the gov’t imposed austerity measures. Its just not in their nature, especially with this new military expedition in Libya. Where is that money going to come from? Its insane! QE3 is next (or maybe they’ll call it QE2+) and then QE4, etc. until the dollar loses its reserve currency status and Mr Market imposes a reality check on all this bs. Â

I sit here and read many blogs and try to have a positve attitude but, the more I read it does not seem the Gov, Fed ,or anyone will or could come up with any answers to this financial mess. I know I don’t have any answers.

I am an older guy so I do have a paid off house but, will I be able to pay for taxes, utilities( if available),food ( have a big garden), health care,etc?
I know that I am in a much better situation than 10’s of millions of my countryman, but, I fear when this thing blows that the situation could spiral out of control very quickly.
Prepare for a drastic change in lifestlye both mentally and physically for the worse. Try to communicate with your kids and extended family if they will listen( probably won’t).

The economy, our culture, borders, ever expanding gov control of freakin’ everything. We ARE under attack! Comments…..I think there is one course of action that might save this country. I live in a small rural county (pop. 31,000). Since NAFTA, this county has lost over 5,000 jobs, all gone across the border. Multiply that by all the areas in this country with similar circumstances. We are not going to come up with some new industry to put these people back to work. The workers in Mexicao or latin america or china can do anything the people here can do, only for $1 or $2 per day. Unless we bring back the manufacturing base we will never have enough people working and paying taxes to have a chance at survival.

Is it the Government that is addicted to spending or the general public who benefits from the largesse? We all collect some of the spending in some form or another or benefit from tax rules. How many folks benefited from the Cash for Clunkers program. I just bought a new fridge and freezer and damned if the government didn’t pick up half the price.Â
The real problem is no one has bothered to tell the public the truth…some things have to go…including our tendency to start a war somewhere about every 5/6 years. Poll after poll has asked the questions on cutting programs and everybody is fine with cutting the other guy’s benefit. Nobody or few are willing to agree it will take shared sacrafice from all to make a difference in the deficits. However, the debt is another problem and the only way it will ever get paid is a devaluation in the $ that reduces it’s value to about a 1/3 of what it is today.Â

Comments…..yeah, the snowball to hell is speeding up…don’t think it is gonna be much longer before we all, prepared and unprepared really see the “in-your-face” realities of the situation. the past two or three years have only been a taste of what is to come in our not too distant future. there are gonna be alot of “confused and pissed off” folks out there who do not have the sense to get out of the rain much less the know how on taking care of themselves much less anyone else they “care” about.
DK I do not buy the idea of a NWO. The reason is that there are billions of people in this planet who have nationalist zeal for their country especially in the US. I will be damned to see the US be part of a global dictatorship. There are millions like us who believe in national sovereignty and would not follow no law except the Constitution Second the EU proved how a one world govt cannot work. First culturally we are all different. We all have differing values and we cannot unite in one purpose for world govt. Economically the rich nations would have to support the power nations. When that happens the rich countries go bankrupt and the whole system goes into chaos just like what is going on in the EU. The PIIG nations are being supported by Germany and France meanwhile these nations will go bankrupt and the whole euro experiment will go to ashes. Also there will be massive revolts against such an idea of one world govt. They can try but they will fail. There is too many people,too many countries,differing cultures to have a one world govt. Anyone who is worried about QE3 or higher can relax. If you read what helicopter Ben wrote when QE2 was announced, he said it plain as day. At least 600 billion would be spent by no later then June. It mentions nothing about stopping, just that it would be spent no later then June. And that at least 600 billion would be spent. They’ll just increase the amount and put out another future date for the next batch if they even publically announce it. Cause, you know, its not like important is it? This way it can be done quietly to keep Wall St. high on free money.

Ok–let’s be realistic about everything–the current situation is utterly unsustainable and NO politican from any party has the balls to do anything about the debt situation until forced to. That much is a given. What is also a given is that, at least currently, the United States has THE largest economy in the world. China is second. Japan is third. For now.
What that means is the US is not going away overnight in a frenzy of hyperinflationary pixie dust. It simply cannot and will not. What WILL happen is a continual, but gradual devaluation of the US dollar–much akin to the frog sitting in gradually boiling water and thus doesn’t realize he is being boiled. All the while, China, India and Russia will be preparing to supplant the US in terms of the size of their economy and the value of their currencies.
the ONLY thing that could possibly arrest this progression, and in my opinion stop the dollar debacle and stop the debt accumulation is full scale unadulterated development of US domestic energy reserves. We free ourselves from mid east dependency and that is a GAME CHANGER.
Politicans however will only do the right thing once eveything else is tried and fails.

SSPXER- after trillion comes quadrillion (1 followed by 15 zeros.) Then quintillion (1 followed by 18 zeros.) Of course the only way we’ll ever use these numbers is in reference to our future currency, as in “that gallon of milk will cost you 16 quadrillion dollars.”

When QE2 ends, assuming that they can’t find some way to justify QE3, since the government debt addicts MUST HAVE their next “fix” you will at that time see them mandate that all retirement accounts have some percentage of their funds in “safe” U.S. Treasuries. This will make up for the removal of the Fed as the purchaser of only resort for U.S. Treasuries. Of course, those retirement funds moving into U.S. Treasuries have to come from somewhere, so you will see Stocks and Bonds and ETF’s and commodities all get crushed, which will likely start us back into a deflationary spiral (so inflation will not be a problem, at least not in the short term). And so everyone will lose except the government debt addicts, who will get their next “fix” and will have kicked the can (for their own pain) down the road a little bit further.

I have to say anon, you are quite the irresponsible citizen. I don’t fit into any of the categories above. I live my life fairly simple. I rarely turn the boob tube on, I voted for the right candidate but the cocoapuffers out numbered me. My kids are grown, have respectable jobs and they go to work – on time. I don’t blame myself for other people’s actions though I have to suffer the consequences of them. That is what sucks. In the meantime, I’ll continue my life as I see fit and will support my kids in whatever way I can. They’re adults–responsible for their own actions.

I thought I should add the rest of the story, regarding what I think will happen when the QE milk cow runs dry and the government debt addicts latch onto the retirement funds milk cow for their next “fix”. I didn’t say that, in the short term, doing that would “solve” the inflation problem and also tend to keep interest rates low (since no one borrows in a deflationary environment) and “save” the U.S. Dollar. But to finish the story, as the deflationary spiral deepens, caused by the transfer of all of those funds to U.S. Treasuries from all other asset classes, as people’s retirement funds are crushed, the government debt addicts will mandate that an ever increasing percentage of retirement funds be allocated to “safe” U.S. Treasuries (for the “protection” of people’s retirement savings, naturally). That will last 2, maybe 3 years, after which that milk cow will begin to run dry as well. Since the government debt addicts MUST HAVE their next “fix” you will begin to hear loud cries that the deflationary spiral was caused because “quantitative easing” was ended prematurely and must be started up again in a big way (ignoring the reality that it was instead because of the government’s debt addiction). Those loud cries will eventually win out and “quantitative easing” will begin again in a big way. At that point inflation will begin to skyrocket again and we will likely experience the hyper inflationary collapse that so many are calling for in the short term.

I own my business and drag my butt out of bed at 4:00am every morning. I prepare when others do not. If I do watch TV, it is usually something I can learn something about. I read alot and not tabloids.
