Brutal Reality: Government Shutdown Is Proving Americans Are NOT Prepared For A Recession

by | Jan 23, 2019 | Emergency Preparedness, Headline News | 86 comments

The brutal reality is that most Americans are not prepared for the next economic downturn or recession. The government shutdown is highlighting just how much Americans rely on others as opposed to themselves, and how little they have saved for an emergency.

According to the newest op-ed article by Market Watch, the government shutdown is perfectly proving that Americans are not prepared for a financial disaster of any kind, let alone an economic recession. Many have long assumed that the government (which as we all know is almost $22 trillion in debt) will be using their money (stolen funds aka, taxation) to bail out those who get themselves into trouble. But the shutdown is proving just how little the government actually does and just how financially illiterate many Americans have allowed themselves to become.

Almost 60% of Americans have less than $1000 in savings for a rainy day fund or an immediate emergency. It’s been ten years since the Great Recession left many Americans jobless with no money, and it appears most have learned nothing. The government shutdown serves as a painful warning and preview for what will happen once unemployment rises from 50-year lows.  Americans are far too dependent on others, including the government, for their survival.

Within just a few weeks into the government shutdown, people are struggling to cope. We hear stories about people turning to food banks to feed their families. We hear stories about people who are in dire straits because they can’t get loans. We hear stories about people who can’t pay their mortgages. That’s not even one month into the shutdown. –Market Watch

Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck, including those who work for the government.  Many won’t live below their means in order to save and it certainly seems that most citizens have picked up the government’s spending habits. They have also stopped saving for themselves. According to a recent GoBankingRates survey, only 21% of Americans have more than $10,000 in savings, with nearly 60% having less than $1,000 in savings. Almost 32% of Americans have nothing saved up at all.

And something most don’t want to hear is that every economic cycle will end and hit a low again despite the rosy attestations of those who wish to keep confidence high. There is nothing in history that suggests that extremely low unemployment can be maintained for an extended period of time. Indeed, it is precisely at the end of an economic cycle that low unemployment rates tend to reverse rather suddenly.

There is one way to prepare for a recession and it’s to end dependence on debt and save some money for an emergency. Without the shackles of credit card debt, student loan debt, and car payments, Americans could not only save more, but their money would go much further as no one has already claimed it in the form of debt repayment.

Inflation is Running at 40-Year Highs!

Negative interest rates are taxing savers, creating food shortages, and making life miserable in the United States!

There's little time left before the REAL DISASTER occurs!

One good thing about a total Grid melt down would be that most debt would be wiped away, especially unsecured debt like credit cards. How would a large bank like JP Morgan Chase – ever chase down 30 million Americans owing them credit card debt? Its all uncollectible. Its a write off of gigantic magnitude. Jubilee.. So pay off all your secured debt first like a car loan or mortgage, screw the credit cards and pay them last. They deserve to be served up a helping of punishment back for their predator lending over the last 50 years.

Cash. People with money love quality. I also have a large assortment of signed Oil Paintings for sale. People love artwork also. I make money buying at pennies on the dollar quality items at estate sales, and then reselling or flipping the item off of Craigs list for as much as 3 times what I paid for the item. I deal in all cash for this kind of sale.

The government would assume the debt and JP Morgan Chase would never close it’s doors.

That is what happened in 2009 with the bad mortgages. Fannie Mae bought them all.

I’m afraid it will require a complete economic meltdown and a lot of people homeless and starving before Americans WAKE UP and live in reality, and by that time it will be too late. Then these same morons will clamor even more loudly for Socialism /Communism. This has been the plan of the Global elites for years.

Work hard, scrimp and save. Now watch it all be destroyed as hyperinflation makes your saving account worth a cart full of groceries. The fiat currency / Federal Reserve scam makes saving a fool’s errand unless that “fool” is saving in real dollars (371.25 grains of fine silver) or gold. Putting your wealth into a bank and then being charged taxes on the miniscule return is offensive to anyone with a three digit IQ.

Save your money in other precious metals as well…lead, brass etc.

      • John Stiner

Most Americans will be screwed involuntarly.

Basically all retirement funds are through a 401K or a 457 plan. You CAN NOT take your money out unless you quit your job or you formally retire.

These 457 and 401ks are nothing more than mutual funds that buy stocks. When the stock market crashes, the mutual fund price crashes, but you can’t remove your money when you see it coming unless you quit your job.

        Catch -22

        • rellik

          You forgot 403b’s
You generally get a yearly report that states the health of your account(s), read it.
My pensions are actually annuities and I get a yearly report. I read them.
Government, well established corporation bonds, and commercial real estate make up most of my pension income. These sources are historically secure.
Inflation is my biggest enemy. It destroys our wealth and it is an artificial part of our economic system.

Breaking News: If you don’t prep, you’re inept. I’ve got several years’ worth of storable food, water, and other survival supplies built up so I’ll make it. There’s going to be a great culling coming one way or another.

      • John Stiner

I recently opened an 8 year old 5 gallon bucket of all purpose flour. The flour was dumped directly into the food grade bucket and the lid sealed on. No other methods were used for preservation.

The flour was as good as the day it first went in.

        • Genius

Thats pretty good for flour. I store grains whole and grind them as needed. Wheat kernels whole will last 50+ years.

          • nationindistress

A man that knows how to store. Extend the life with Oxy absorbers and mylar bags?

            • John Stiner

I put oxygen absorbers in with dog food in sealed 5 gallon buckets. A year later I opened it and discovered that everywhere there was an oxygen absorber there was mold, in the areas with no oxygen absorber, there was no mold.

I don’t know why, but that ended my use of oxygen absorbers.

          • rellik

Same here. I have close to two hundred pounds of wheat berries. Red and white. at 50 years storage life, some of that wheat will probably outlive me.

            • Genius

relik, you probably won’t believe this but I have well over 1000 pounds of wheat stored lol. I got 20 50lb. bags on craigslist for 5 bux each plus the 8 or so buckets I already had. What a score, double bagged long term storage rated triple cleaned too. I have made some great deals on craigslist!

      • Grunty McPhereson

Agreed on the coming culling, Dep Ren. I’ve been prepping/waiting for a number of years for the balloon to go up, and I’m so grateful that I have my “insurance” of food, water, gear, brass, lead, lead slingers. The culling May happen tomorrow or not for a few years…..but it WILL happen!

Lord, I think about how vulnerable my family was BP (before prepping), and it’s worth it to me that I have the peace of mind now that in the event it happens, I’m as ready as I can be.

        God bless

In the past I may have disagreed, but now I’m somewhat inclined to agree. I’ve been practically begging for objective information on HUP solar storage batteries, and have seen no response.
Last year, a hint from a prepper saved me thousands on solar panels(I’m installing 10.6 kW ground mount system).
Most comments on prepping refer to food
            and medications these days.
It might be interesting to read a post on how to make Primers for rifle, pistol, or shotguns, rather than how stupid Democrats are( doom and gloom porn).

            • Justice

rellik, I could not respond to your inquiry because my solar system uses deep cycle marine batteries. They’re not the best, but okay for my limited uses.

The fact that you question received no responses is telling about how far this site has fallen. So many preppers have disappeared. It’s been a long 12 years and I admit to being burned out as well. But I really believe that we are on the precipice and that the preparations we make NOW will matter in the coming years.

I have noticed the exact opposite. Everyone I know that works for the government and is not getting paid, has no worries because they have plenty of savings. Nothing bad has happened as far as I can see due to the shutdown. The government doesn’t do anything useful anyway, so them not doing it is a good thing.

      @Deplorable Neal Jensen says
Exactly! I read an article that people were pawning their flat screen tv’s and extra cars to pay their rent, etc. Why the heck do people own these things if they have no money saved for emergencies?! Even when I was young and living paycheck to paycheck I would save money….even if it was only $5.00 No matter what level your income is at, it’s important to live below your means and save monthly. And why would these workers, who went through a shut-down during Obama, not learn the valuable lesson so they aren’t in that position again? I honestly don’t get it-

      • The Deplorable Renegade

Anonymous, good points. I always saved money even when I was poor because it was NECESSARY. I’ve always had something in reserve for that ‘rainy day’, especially when I had car trouble. I was doing good just to live below my means. People nowadays don’t know how to get their priorities straight. If you have a CHAMPAGNE appetite, but you only have a BEER budget, then you’re going to settle for the BEER or do without it. Such people don’t ‘get it’ and never will.

        • Genius

I have shitcanned many women for exactly that reason.

    13. Maranatha

If you lived through the wretched political mess of Watergate (which was a minscule scandal by comparison to any of the 11+ scandals of the Clintons which grew to HUGE ONES later with the Uranium deal with Russia and pay for play), then you know that led to complete consumer loss of optimism. We ended up with STAGFLATION and recession at the same time. Interest rates went to 15% on things like new car loans by 1981.

Things can get far worse. Everyone could be out if work and the interest rates so high that it’s impossible to pay investors, so the entire economy then is stagnant.

Then no one can buy a home unless they have a really inflation proof job and a large cushion of assets.

      • Maranatha

If we have hyperinflation, then first people would cheer because say you owe $75,000 on a home mortgage and suddenly dollars are like monopoly money and worthless. Well, people pay off their loans all at once, so that seems better. Then it’s impossible to buy groceries and a loaf of bread costs $20 then $200 then $2000 and so on. See Zimbabwe.

But deflation is horrendous. The dollars falls in value and everyone gets paid less but has EXISTING DEBTS that can then NEVER BE PAID OFF.

        • Maranatha

With hyperinflation, owning a homestead upon which you can provide yourself with food, firewood, has a well, has goats, chickens, and rabbits and wild edibles and squirrels…then is PRICELESS. It literally on paper is worth millions.

But since no one can afford to buy it, then it is absolutely illiquid. And then nothing is more valuable and a stronger person will try multiple strategies to seize it from you.

With severe deflation, you can’t pay your loans, and since the only valuable asset is producing land, the banks would try to seize all agricultural land, even using hred thugs to do so.

In many ways we have lost our way, we have to get it right again, and can’t let the football game stop us. I’m with you on that and the whole bowels of hell in Washington DC part too but how is it that you know Lucifer so very well? In fact, how do I know that you aren’t him, and vice versa, how do you know that I’m not? He is, after all, The Great Deceiver.

            • Bond Servant Ron

I know Lucifer/Satan because I had the Anti-Christ Spirit in me before I was saved by the blood of the lamb, like ALL COWARD AMERICANS who have the Anti-Christ Spirit. ALL AMERICAN COWARDS do not have the Holy Spirit of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they ALL have the Anti-Christ Spirit. No, I am not Lucifer. You could be the Great Deceiver, who knows, but your time is up anyway if you are Lucifer, and you would know that. If you are Lucifer, I will build you a Permaculture Food Forest Garden, so you can bury yourself in it for 1000 years, before my Master comes back to reclaim this earth and all the Kingdoms now under your complete control. What better way for a servant(me) to serve his Master than to clean up his house(earth) before he gets home….so if you are Lucifer, I am asking you to bury yourself in the ground to start that cleaning process I will even put a plaque over the entrance to your burial plot with your name on it…”LUCIFER THE GREAT DECEIVER AND GOD OF ALL COWARD AMERICANS LIES HERE” or anything else you would like it to say.

If you buy flour as a prepper, you should freeze it for a couple days to kill pantry moth larva. Then store it and hopefully use it up by rotating it. Flour goes bad mostly by pantry moths and exposure to oxygen as the oil in the wheat goes bad when milled.

Smarter long term preppers have wheat berries and grind when they need it. That is going to have a longer shelf life.

If you get pantry moths (very common) then go to the Farm Supply and get pheremone traps. These lure in moths and then you toss that. It works.

And wipe the gaskets on your 5 gallon buckets with mineral oil too. Helps the seal and keeps the rubber from drying out.

Neal: but a big part of the problem is that Corp America and the Gov’t has fucked us big time and the costs of everything goes UP & up & up while us average folks are paid like it is 1980 or some shit! I work for Corp America and they literally feel it is acceptable to give so called “Raises” of like a god damn quarter – WTF, are you kidding me? 25 stinking cents and that is if you had a good score… can you live and pay all of this top-dollar damn bills??

Everyone should be doing what was done in older times. Save some money (be it fiat, PMs or whatever), food, water, etc. – AT HOME.

Whether a Depression or if the balloon goes up, you will not get inside a bank to get what is yours. It will all be gone in an instant. Fiat currency will have far less value than it did, but you will have something to deal or barter with before it looses all its value.

The State is the only national government. There are fifty of them in the American Union. That federal Union is just a continental united nations arrangement. As Thomas Jefferson defined the federal government: it is only “our” states’ (joint, federal) “foreign office”. U.S. Americans are woefully (and intentionally brainwashed to be) ignorant of that core Constitutional reality. They’re therefore living un-Constitutionally in a law-of-the-jungle rogue “state” called “the United States” (as if those states were singular instead of Constitutionally still plural, even when acting federally as a Union). Those states are republics (“kingdoms of the people”) in which every citizen thereof is King and Queen– collectively of their respective states and, severally, each King and Queen of only him or herself. That’s Constitutional reality, not the dysfunctional fake “reality” that’s foisted upon us all by the mainstream propagandists.
