But the shutdown is proving just how little the government actually does and just how financially illiterate many Americans have allowed themselves to become.

There is nothing in history that suggests that extremely low unemployment can be maintained for an extended period of time. Indeed, it is precisely at the end of an economic cycle that low unemployment rates tend to reverse rather suddenly.
There is one way to prepare for a recession and it’s to end dependence on debt and save some money for an emergency. Without the shackles of credit card debt, student loan debt, and car payments, Americans could not only save more, but their money would go much further as no one has already claimed it in the form of debt repayment.

I recently opened an 8 year old 5 gallon bucket of all purpose flour. The flour was dumped directly into the food grade bucket and the lid sealed on. No other methods were used for preservation.
The flour was as good as the day it first went in.
Thats pretty good for flour. I store grains whole and grind them as needed. Wheat kernels whole will last 50+ years.

I put oxygen absorbers in with dog food in sealed 5 gallon buckets. A year later I opened it and discovered that everywhere there was an oxygen absorber there was mold, in the areas with no oxygen absorber, there was no mold.
I don’t know why, but that ended my use of oxygen absorbers.

Anonymous, good points. I always saved money even when I was poor because it was NECESSARY. I’ve always had something in reserve for that ‘rainy day’, especially when I had car trouble. I was doing good just to live below my means. People nowadays don’t know how to get their priorities straight. If you have a CHAMPAGNE appetite, but you only have a BEER budget, then you’re going to settle for the BEER or do without it. Such people don’t ‘get it’ and never will.
I have shitcanned many women for exactly that reason.
If you lived through the wretched political mess of Watergate (which was a minscule scandal by comparison to any of the 11+ scandals of the Clintons which grew to HUGE ONES later with the Uranium deal with Russia and pay for play), then you know that led to complete consumer loss of optimism. We ended up with STAGFLATION and recession at the same time. Interest rates went to 15% on things like new car loans by 1981.
Things can get far worse. Everyone could be out if work and the interest rates so high that it’s impossible to pay investors, so the entire economy then is stagnant.
Then no one can buy a home unless they have a really inflation proof job and a large cushion of assets.
If we have hyperinflation, then first people would cheer because say you owe $75,000 on a home mortgage and suddenly dollars are like monopoly money and worthless. Well, people pay off their loans all at once, so that seems better. Then it’s impossible to buy groceries and a loaf of bread costs $20 then $200 then $2000 and so on. See Zimbabwe.
But deflation is horrendous. The dollars falls in value and everyone gets paid less but has EXISTING DEBTS that can then NEVER BE PAID OFF.
With hyperinflation, owning a homestead upon which you can provide yourself with food, firewood, has a well, has goats, chickens, and rabbits and wild edibles and squirrels…then is PRICELESS. It literally on paper is worth millions.
But since no one can afford to buy it, then it is absolutely illiquid. And then nothing is more valuable and a stronger person will try multiple strategies to seize it from you.
With severe deflation, you can’t pay your loans, and since the only valuable asset is producing land, the banks would try to seize all agricultural land, even using hred thugs to do so.
Livestock around here needs ultra protection from mountain lions, hawks, foxes, eagles, coyotes, bobcats, and a plethora of preditors. Plan accordingly

If you buy flour as a prepper, you should freeze it for a couple days to kill pantry moth larva. Then store it and hopefully use it up by rotating it. Flour goes bad mostly by pantry moths and exposure to oxygen as the oil in the wheat goes bad when milled.
Smarter long term preppers have wheat berries and grind when they need it. That is going to have a longer shelf life.
If you get pantry moths (very common) then go to the Farm Supply and get pheremone traps. These lure in moths and then you toss that. It works.
And wipe the gaskets on your 5 gallon buckets with mineral oil too. Helps the seal and keeps the rubber from drying out.
