Wholesale American beef prices jumped 6% to a record high of $330.82 per 100 pounds, a 62% increase from the lows in February, according to Bloomberg, citing new USDA data.

The surge in beef prices comes at a time when the nation’s food supply chain network has been severely damaged by meatpacking plants going offline due to virus-related shutdowns and worker shortage. Bloomberg highlights the latest plant closures in the map below:

Soaring food inflation came one day after President Trump said he would be issuing an executive order to address meat shortages.

“Because of the virus, meat slaughtering is 40% below where it needs to be to handle all of the animals coming to market, said Arlan Suderman,” chief commodities economist at INTL FCStone.

“Processing plants were generally in favor of the executive order that would give them liability cover when reopening,” Suderman said. “Yet, the order still does not solve the problem of employee absenteeism.” At least 20 workers in meat and food processing have died and 5,000 have tested positive or forced to self-quarantine due to coronavirus, according to the United Food and Commercial Workers International union.

Just days ago, Tyson Foods warned in a full-page ad in the New York Times on Sunday that the “food supply chain is breaking.”

And with tens of millions of Americans out of work, a crashed economy that is plunging into depression, and rapid food inflation — this could all suggest that the evolution of the virus crisis is not just an economic crisis but also social instabilities are ahead.

      1. Whew. I read ‘Beer’ instead of ‘Beef’ and freaked out for a second.

Mac – I haven’t been able to post a message in several weeks. What gives?

        • I just bought 6 rabbits. 2 does and a buck are 6 to 8 months old and ready for breeding, and I got 2 more does and a buck about 7 weeks old from different litters. Rabbits are ready for breeding in only about 3 months old and depending on the size of the rabbit breed the litters can be from 5 to 8 on average for offspring per litter. And it only takes about 29 days from conception to birth of a new litter. I found a bunch of Free pallets and built a large 4 bay hutch and will build a few more, ready for the new litters. Do not hesitate in procuring your future meat protein source.

You can grow many vegetable from the roots of the vegetables you buy from the store. Folks take charge of your food. Plant gardens and I also just bought 600 red wiggler worms for a worm farm to get the soil rich with nutrients to begin planting a small raised garden. Got too start someplace. Doing nothing will ensure your demise.

      2. Recent articles states Bill Gates and others want to end human consumption of meat (animal tissue). He wants humans to eat lab grown “meat”. Billionaires and oligarchs plan a dystopian future where they have total control of humanity and resources and power. Where the majority of people will eventually literally live little more than a feudal existence.
They want to control what we eat, where we live, what we learn, how many children, and modify your thinking, behavior, and beliefs. They want to limit or eliminate property and civil rights, eliminate personal vehicles (which actually means restrict freedom of movement and eliminate distant travel), comply with forced vaccinations, eliminate wide use of oil and natural gas (fossil fuels), disarm the population, decrease our standard of living, marginalize Christianity, socialize medicine and end care for people over age 60, and eliminate all our privacy. Corporate and official powers are united in these actual goals to subjugate populations. This is NOT hyperbole, it is proceeding now.
People have got to stop being distracted and become educated about what is happening under their noses. The people don’t have the majority of wealth and resources, but what we do have is sheer numbers, numbers that if society united would be invincible.
Rather, it seems many people are satisfied with bread and circuses. They are satisfied with their lab grown protein, GMO food, food laced with glyphosate, and pumped full of high fructose corn syrup (tumors and cancer cells love HFCS). All watered and fertilized with chem-trailing. No wonder life spans in the West have started to decrease.

      3. bought a set of hair clippers just after they shut everything down. people were busy running for toilet paper masks and wipes. i already had that stuff. so i focused on longer term needs. had wife give me a haircut today her first time so i walked her through it. in my younger years me and my buddies would give each other hair cuts with clippers. we werent barbers but we did it enuff to give a good fade. glad i bought the hair clippers. i can give my boys hair cuts and possibly do it as a bartering service. i knew the barber would be shut down and now people are crying for haircuts. not only do you need food and supplies you need to be able to do services like haircuts.

      4. This BB goes ballistic when the 1st, 2nd, 4th Amendments are trampled by laws passed by Legislatures and signed by Governors or the President. As egresses as that is circumventing Constitutional Rights and bypassing the Amendment procedure here we have a fiat decree known as an Executive Order which is not mentioned in the Constitution but did appear shortly after its ratification. The intent was to streamline existing law that was in adherence to the Constitution. Here an entire industry is selected to be above the reach of the 7th Amendment.

        Amendment VII

In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.

      5. I was in the grocery store in Aurora, IL. tonight, May 2, and there was absolutely ZERO absence of meat, and prices were the same as they have always been.

      6. This is the result of handing out free money.

Stop handing out free money, perhaps earners would ear and save money for rainy days, perhaps farmers would send all the food they produce to the market and get a fair price depending on supply and demand. Stop supporting corporations and foreign nations. Stop supporting the so called poor and encouraging millions more to get free money for not working.

You foockin braindead idiots want higher wages yet you want millions more illegal aliens to come in!!

        * * * * * Start handing out free money to those that are married, legal citizen, that work 40+ hours a week for many many years, always pay their bills in full and on time, no police or court cases against them, don’t do drugs or alcohol, always save money aside for rainy days, has insurance to cover any losses.

        Encourage and reward personal responsibility.

Until they stop handing out free money to all those that DON’T DESERVE IT, things and the total economy soon may fair.

The bottom 50% must learn to fend for themselves.

      7. The closures aren’t virus related. They are producing this artificial crisis in order to gouge the consumer by high prices, gouge the producers by having an oversupply of meat.

I betcha within three months the top meat producers will get billions in bailouts if this continues. The US govt should let them all fail into bankruptcy and let the smaller producers take over. TO HELL WITH ALL OF THE MEGA TRILLION DOLLAR WORLD MEGA CORPORATIONS.
