Anti-Surveillance Mask Can Hide You From Biometric Face Scanners: “An Alternative Identity When in Public”

The U.S. government is spending billions of dollars to ensure that they can monitor and track every single activity in which you engage, be it online of off. The latest attempt to infringe on the personal anonymity comes in the form of what has been referred to as Real I.D., essentially a social security number for the internet which would be used to follow your every move in cyberspace. Coupled with technologies that include email mining, global positioning systems, predictive behavioral analysis, drones over America, and even eavesdropping via microphones on our cell phones, the ultimate goal is a surveillance state so expansive that Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin would be jealous.

But just as quickly as government introduces the technologies that are supposed to keep us safe from terrorists and ourselves, enterprising rebels across the country are working to counter them.

In the realm of biometrics, where literally hundreds of thousands of cameras now watch our every move and plug in directly to data mining Fusion Centers where our activities are analyzed, aggregated and dispatched according to our perceived threat, some might think the system itself has become unbeatable.

Short of plastic surgery, how can we modify our faces to disappear from prying government eyes when we step out of our front doors?

If Leo Selvaggio has his way, you’ll be able to assume an alternative identity by using an age old low-tech strategy made possible by modern-day 3-D printers.

It’s so simple that it’s brilliant, especially considering the fact that Selvaggio’s innovation is capable of compromising multi-billion dollar face recognition surveillance systems with the use of an easily obtainable personal prosthetic mask.

Selvaggio2

His rubber mask aimed at foiling surveillance cameras features his visage, and if he has his way, plenty of people will be sporting the Personal Surveillance Identity Prosthetic in public. It’s one of three products made by the Chicago-based artist’s URME Surveillance, a venture dedicated to “protecting the public from surveillance and creating a safe space to explore our digital identities.”

“Our world is becoming increasingly surveilled. For example, Chicago has over 25,000 cameras networked to a single facial recognition hub,” reads the URME (pronounced U R Me) site. “We don’t believe you should be tracked just because you want to walk outside and you shouldn’t have to hide either. Instead, use one of our products to present an alternative identity when in public.”

The 3D-printed resin mask, made from a 3D scan of Selvaggio’s face and manufactured by ThatsMyFace.com, renders his features and skin tone with surprising realism, though the eyes peeping out from the eye holes do lend a certain creepiness to the look.

“When you wear these devices the cameras will track me instead of you and your actions in public space will be attributed as mine because it will be me the cameras see,” the artist, who’s working toward his MFA at Chicago’s Columbia College, says on a recently launched Indiegogo page for the products. “All URME devices have been tested for facial recognition and each properly identifies the wearer of me on Facebook, which has some of the most sophisticated facial recognition software around.”

(Cnet)

The anti-face recognition tech is currently only available in Leo Selvaggio’s image, so government systems spotting anyone wearing the mask will flag him as the culprit. But the implications are so broad that somewhere inside the Department of Homeland Security surveillance personnel are undoubtedly scrambling to thwart it, because it presents a serious hiccough to the surveillance state.

With the ease of 3-D printing any technophobe with the ability to mimic someone else’s face via 3D graphing software will have the ability to literally assume a person’s identity by simply printing their face and wearing it.

In a the world of biometric surveillance, that means anybody can disappear from view and essentially become a 21st century Silence Dogood.

Real ID? How about Alternative ID instead?

Great idea although how fast would the corrupt in dc rally to make this form of identity deception illegal?
They fear us this is why they work so diligently to track every move we make, tech/hardware like this rightly creates doubt in the system.

                • Be informed

This is but the tip of the iceberg. The further anyone can get the hell away from the main cities the better. Small towns usually just don’t have this sh#$ YET. Too expensive and not really worth it for areas with small number of people. Trouble is magnified with the higher number of individuals. You look at the free states and they are usually small number of population. Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska are prime examples of this. The big cities are where these 1984 type martial law state cameras are. People will agrue that small town America has this also, but nothing to the volume as Chicago, Boston, LA, etc.

If you have to deal with this garbage, anything such as VRF says such as sunglasses or other distractions should work pretty good. Sh@#, wear a rubber nose. This is really rotten because there is something in this country called privacy. It is different when law enforcement is looking for a bank robbery or something or some rapist, but to scan people that have done nothing to anyone just because they MIGHT be suspecious shows just what an ugly path this country has taken. America use to be the free world, and where ex-USSR nations use to try to get to. Now>>>>>>>>Police State.

                • Gregory8

I hate to burst bubbles but if they lead to false hope then it’s necessary. There are systems already in place that are far more sophisticated than just facial recognition. These systems are also able to analyze your height, weight, body proportions (arm, leg and torso lengths and measurements), and body movement (walking gait) to spot you once they have it in the system. Once they have these data items you can wear all the disguises in the worlds and they can still say, “Yeah, that’s him”. This stuff is plain spooky. This is just newer soft-wear so they can be applied throughout the system if they want. But the whole things hinges on staying out of the system in the first place ( no profile), then you’re just John/Jane Doe, as long as you don’t attract anyone’s attention in the first place. The best thing to do is to stay out of bigger cities that have these systems.

If there was a planned protest in D.C. concerning the restoration of our civil liberties, can you imagine the outpouring of citizens???!!!!

It’s easy. People that are police officers and other officials have their homes listed in property information databases which are all searchable. What happened that turned the Bundy situation was the folks started staking out where the cops were staying (hotel) and blocked the parking lot entrances so they couldn’t leave. These folks have lives and children just like the rest of us and the stakes are high for them too. That understanding of quid pro quo is one of the last checks on excessive government behavior available. None of these guys want to lose their lives over a turtle, or a bunch of cows. They have your face, but we know where their families live also. So it’s mutual assured destruction folks.

Exactly what I’ve been saying for awhile now! we must be “noncompliant”…..make them show that they really are power hungry crooks….
make them show the aggression…then make them pay a high price for their actions….
at some point the price will be too high for them to survive and keep the power they crave…
The reality is, while some of them would be willing to destroy the entire country in a bloodbath, most are not nearly so committed to such goals…..they will fracture, their resolve will collapse and more and more of their followers will quit as resistance to such policy/action,etc grows and any conflict drags on…..
This is how most any war is won, when one side…generally the losing one….decides that victory is too expensive to achieve…..
To win we simply need to organize, resist and out last these gov’t liberal/Socialists….

                • sixpack

It is going to have to come way down in price, before it will catch on to any extent. The other possibility is just wearing any mask.

There is an art form, a media called “mucilage” where you can make a mold of your own face. It’s like they use in movies, but anybody who is handy with a paint brush could do something acceptable with it. It is also pretty cheap by comparison.

                • eze

At one time, I lived in Arizona…..while there, they had “red light” cameras…I noted, that… at least some people were so ticked off, that they damaged or “covered” the cameras…..this led to eventually forcing the local gov’t to remove them….I don’t know if they brought them back…..
My point being that people could do something very similar here…”covering” cameras, etc….I’m not advocating destruction of property, but….it is tax payers property….

Actually, the Muslims are way ahead of us on this. Think burkhas for the women with shapeless robes concealing all manner of weapons or explosives, same for the men with their man-pajammys and full facial hair to confound the facial recognition schemes. Plus, someone dressing in full muslim regalia transforms themself into a protected person, officially immune from suspicion or molestation by the authorities. Low tech against an arrogant enemy can go a long way towards negating technological superiority.

        I LOVE IT

People can use masks that look like the face of celebrities and anyone. The Government’s recognition system is so good that it must have current updated copies of peoples photographs. Somehow the Government must invent reasons why everyone needs to have new pictures taken as they age. Soon, every time you use a credit card, you will have to have your picture taken for “security” reasons.

While I see 3-D printing as the next industrial revolution that puts the power BACK into the hands of the people, the government and business world…do not want you to have that power, or any for that matter.

People would be wise to get the best 3-D printer you can afford and then go get a Fila-Bot as well. Allows you to recycle your garbage ABS plastic (and others) into useable filament to print with. Imagine how much less garbage there would be if everyone did this!

The actual ‘mask’ idea comes in the form of the Guy Fawkes mask all over the internet and you can even D/L and print one yourself. You can bet big brother IS watching and will try to quell 3-D printing even further in light of this new ‘threat’. Sigh.

Then I would print a mask of Hillary or Pelosi or one of their kids to use when I do my nefarious activities. Or maybe a mask of the mayor or the asshole of the HOA president. Lots of ways to use this to advantage and create trouble for Big Brother.

      • sixpack

Okay, so wearing presidents masks and robbing banks has already been done. They made a movie or two about it.

    11. lonelonemum

In practical terms – how are these an improvement on the Guy fawkes masks worn by the Occupy protesters? Is there any technical advantage? Or one of those very, very cheap plastic masks stocked by make up and theatrical shops?

This kind of technology is great, but unless we show the same kind of unity in resisting the enemy that the Afghans or Iraqi’s showed it’s doomed to fail. One guy in a town wearing one of these masks is easy to pick off, MOST of the guys in a town wearing one of these and yes we have an effective form of resistance.

Switch up your daily routine every so often to confuse the behavioral analysts. Keep a diary and identify your own triggers for certain behavior or get your spouse to do it for you. Every behavior must have a motivator and a causal factor, nail your own triggers and you can confuse the heck outta these guys. Remember they are trying to influence the behavior of the mob, we don’t want to do that, but we do need to understand it in order to avoid getting caught at the wrong end of a variety of situations.

    12. WhoWuddaThunkIt

I don’t think I would want to wear an OB mask; Why,…you would be the first ones to get shot by either side. lol I would stick to a plain old street person grey man mask, Grow a gray yellow stained beard, hat and glasses. And shuffle down the street talking or mumbling to myself.

      • cabinfever

Yep. If this is the case, that only means the hammer comes down harder and much sooner. See that commercial when the person walks out of a grocery store with things stuffed in his pockets? That’s because he’s chipped and the computer reads it on his way out. You won’t be able to buy or sell (or go any place since there will be check-points) without the chip. Any place you want to go will require getting “scanned”…if you don’t have that chip, you can’t get scanned – hence you won’t be allowed to do anything.

I bet a homemade HERF gun would wreak havoc on most cameras

        • The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

Actually, the Achilles heel of all these technologies is their dependence on a functioning electrical grid and internet. When the roundups and tyranny are out in the open, those who would fight our enslavers would do well to target transformers, power lines, server farms, and even power plants. During WWII, underground fighters targeted coal fired power plants and locomotives by using bombs disguised as lumps of coal that were snuck into coal piles. We can do the same.

Destroy the electrical grid and we level the playing field.

          • the renegade braveheart

An EMP can fry the electronics of the surveillance grid along with everything else. Also, a green laser aimed straight at the camera can disable it. Google ‘green lasers.’

Nice try but we already deploy technology that makes this Grade-1-level evasion technique redundant. As you can imagine, in Iraq and other conflict zones, people wear masks to try and evade identification. As in, it is a basic tactic that needed to be counter measured. We developed a work-around that uses a mix of technologies to ident a subject: walking gait, retina, sniffing (yes, the races and ethnicities do smell different), and other secret things that make it impossible for a hoodie scum-bag, gang-rapping piece of sh#t to evade detection while walking down the street. Just saying…

    30. lonelonemum

London is probably the city that has the most cameras on Earth & guns are illegal.

Cameras haven’t stopped the knife crimes, they didn’t stop the riots of 2011. They didn’t stop the IRA Bishopsgate or 7/7 bombings by Al CIA Duh right in the heart of the square mile of the City of London. They won’t stop the resistance to the NWO long term.

In Scotland excessive camera use in the cities hasn’t stopped the demands for independence.

The Iraqi’s & Afghans haven’t accepted their conquest.

Ultimately cameras are but yet another pys ops utterly wasting tax payers hard earned pennies. It’s the sheople’s response to the cameras, not the cameras themselves that are the real threat.

If everyone ignores the damn things and goes about their business without adapting their behavior in anyway shape or form then they have zero impact on mass behavior. It’s just an attempt to induce fear, but we need to remember the story of the wizard of Oz.

If the data centres are switched off then the cameras become obsolete.

      • Frank Thoughts

I actually think the government lets a certain amount of violence take place as a steam valve for social pressure. It also keeps dirt bags and scum in criminal data bases and prevents them from getting mainstream jobs, mortgages etc. A sort of soft eugenics that guarantees parts of the population are going nowhere with their lives.

Notice that the 2011 riots were contained to the crappiest areas and only affected plebs and the pleb-businesses. The rioters never went anywhere near posh neighbourhoods or the government (thus negating the theory it was an uprising against ‘the man’, rather than just looting and thuggery).

What holds things back isn’t technology but human rights and the law. The government knows who the scumbags are, where they live, and has vast amounts of info on them. If they wanted, they could round them up and stuff them in an internment camp.

In terms of tracking people, the technology is way beyond simple face recognition. It is currently possible to track via DNA and to do this with mass crowds (just use a quantum computer). What looks to the human eye as an overwhelming, amorphous herd of unidentifiable human beings, is to a high-capacity computer, just nodes that can be mapped and tracked in real time.

Today, if you are poor, socially isolated, failing, stuck in a ghetto, homeless, that is not by accident, that is by design.

    31. VRF

just the fact that they used our tax dollars to set all this camera shit up should be enough for us to revolt

So, now we’re so scared of our government we should wear a mask in public?

Bullshit. Stand up on your two hind legs and be men, not mice.

    33. Ugly Truth

And what happens when someone wearing this mask makes a purchase using a credit card, uses an ATM, makes a phone call (just a powered on cell phone will ping your location), walks through a dept. store scanner that scans their wallet and ID’s them? Drives thier car. It’s pointless. Sorry.

    34. Kevin2

About three decades ago in my single years I could have used one of those masks for various lady friends in the morning after a night of drinking.

Its funny how they looked ok at 2 AM but at noon not so.

    35. The Last of the Real

Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea, but they can also track your body dimensions, walk, retinas, etc. Also, plan on carrying a burner phone that you bought while wearing the mask? What about all those license plate readers, or the camera in the streetlight by your house that sees you walk in and out your door? This solution, I fear, will only give us a false sense of security, and my unnecessarily flag some if us.

      • The Last of the Real

        *may. May unnecessarily flag us.

      • Frank Thoughts

I agree: people forget that this technology has made enormous advances since 9/11. After the attack, the spigot was opened up for funding in recognition technologies and it was able to leap ahead several generations.

The government keeps quiet about it because it would freak people out, but they can unleash formidable population control if they needed to.

As an example, a neighbourhood of muslims in the UK was accidently revealed to be under super-intensive surveillance. It was leaked the whole place was peppered with hundreds, or maybe thousands, of micro cameras to watch everything. They claimed to take it down but I doubt it.

The technology is such that you can just micro cam everything in site, upload in real time to quantum computers, match idents with body shape, gait, DNA emittance, odour, reconstruct faces under masks by using the bone structure shape, retina scan, sniff any mobile or other signals, put it on to the big screen and have it matched with a database within seconds.

If a community of people is particularly annoying, then throw up an e-gate system in rings around the area to ensure they trigger alerts whenever they move out of the area (possibly straying into a rich area). Arrest a few until the message gets through you don’t leave the e-gate and e-moat.

We are in the 22nd century on this technology but they won’t admit it or use the full powers unless there is mass civil unrest Kiev-style.

Wasn’t this in the MI movies – the make your own masks software/hardware?

    43. Roger Rabbit

this is an excellent way to go about it. another (the writer does ask what other then plastic surgery lol) is to use stuff like movie makeup and such. You don’t need to make yourself look like a Frankenstein monster, just alter your nose to make it a little bigger, add a few more wrinkles, change your mouth or eyes a little, add scars, remove scars, grow a beard or mustache or something. Marlon Brando got his lower jaw so puffy looking in The Godfather by simply putting cotton balls in his mouth along the lower gums.

Keep a kit of stuff on hand and change your appearance every couple of hours to really throw a mix in the bowl…

      • Anonymous

It could actually be kind of fun, Rabbit– one day we ladies have eyeliners, black hair and high boots (disguise your height), the next day we have no makeup, gray hair, old woman-look– ha, ha!

And you men could dress up like old bum one day and the young hood the next.

    44. Dell Maybery

      This tech is non-fnctional.

How long do you think it will take TPTB to adapt to this ONE image being recognized by their pattern-matching algorithms? They will recognize this face and specifically send a harassment team to ID and perhaps arrest the privacy-craving citizen.

The only way for this concept to work is to have … quite literally … thousands or tens of thousands of different masks available.

      • DutchUncle

Not only that, after a while you will be sweating your “face off” behind a plastic mask. NON-functional is just the beginning, It is ILLEGAL in most states to walk around in public with a disguise, and a mask is a disguise. This Penal Code statement dates back to the 70s in case someone says that they JUST NOW wrote that into it.

    45. Bevin

Everyone put on a Guy Fawkes mask.

    46. VA43rd

In many states this is a moot point. Most states have the old Klan statutes on the books that outlaw the wearing of a mask in public. In Va, for example, wearing a mask, and not meeting the given exceptions is a Class 6 Felony.

§ 18.2-422. Prohibition of wearing of masks in certain places; exceptions.

It shall be unlawful for any person over sixteen years of age while wearing any mask, hood or other device whereby a substantial portion of the face is hidden or covered so as to conceal the identity of the wearer, to be or appear in any public place, or upon any private property in this Commonwealth without first having obtained from the owner or tenant thereof consent to do so in writing. However, the provisions of this section shall not apply to persons (i) wearing traditional holiday costumes; (ii) engaged in professions, trades, employment or other activities and wearing protective masks which are deemed necessary for the physical safety of the wearer or other persons; (iii) engaged in any bona fide theatrical production or masquerade ball; or (iv) wearing a mask, hood or other device for bona fide medical reasons upon (a) the advice of a licensed physician or osteopath and carrying on his person an affidavit from the physician or osteopath specifying the medical necessity for wearing the device and the date on which the wearing of the device will no longer be necessary and providing a brief description of the device, or (b) the declaration of a disaster or state of emergency by the Governor in response to a public health emergency where the emergency declaration expressly waives this section, defines the mask appropriate for the emergency, and provides for the duration of the waiver. BEFORE you spend you hard earned money on this farce check your state’s penal code book. This item is ILLEGAL in MOST states, and if you want to be stopped every time you go out and want that kind of attention then go ahead. And these codes date back to the 60s and 70s, I say that for all the Alarmist on the blog that say. “oh they just now wrote that into the code book to help the Nazis”. Just stating the facts, not wanting an argument. just a heads up.
