Technical reserves have already been released, and as the city enters the heavy water use holiday season, its 20 million residents are riding on a fast-track collision course with severe water rationing and devastating disruptions.
But this isn’t a story about Sao Paulo; it’s a report that dares to point out that human societies are incredibly shortsighted and nearly incapable of sustainably populating planet Earth. In numerous regions around the world — including California, India, Oklahoma, Brazil, China and many more — human populations are rapidly out-growing the capacity of their local water systems. Even though keeping populations alive requires food… and growing food requires water… almost no nation or government in the world seems to be able to limit water consumption of local populations to levels which are sustainable in the long term.
Instead, the endless greed of the “grow-consume-profit” business model that dominates the global economy leaves no room for any hint of balance with nature. The overriding philosophy of modern business is to dominate nature with chemicals, mining and monoculture to maximize profit while kicking any really large problems down the road for the next generation to deal with.
The result is a world where nobody thinks about the long-term implications of today’s trends because everybody’s too busy trying to extract a buck or two out of the very system that will destroy their future.
Vegas, Phoenix and Tucson will also run dry
Consider Las Vegas while you ponder all this: Here’s a city with no water future whatsoever, continuing to build new casinos and grow its population even as the water level of Lake Mead has already dropped to emergency levels (and continues to plummet). What do the people of Las Vegas imagine they will drink when all the cheap, easy water is gone? Will they swallow dust and pretend it’s water?
The sobering truth is that nearly everyone who lives in Las Vegas doesn’t think about this. By definition, anyone who realized the truth about the disappearing water throughout Nevada, Arizona and California would have already sold their property and moved away. Those who still inhabit regions with unsustainable water supplies — such as Sao Paulo — are choosing to make believe the problem doesn’t exist.
This delusional psychology is, of course, reflected across modern human civilization and its governments, where delusional rhetoric and make believe fantasies about “endless economic growth” keep the obedient masses toiling away day after day, hoping they are securing a future which has already been mortgaged away.
Dwindling water supplies are like government debt spending
We’re often tricked into believing the government will solve all these problems for us. Yep, some Americans foolishly believe the same government which just issued $1 trillion in new debt to pay the interest on its existing debt is somehow really, really good at planning for the future instead of mortgaging it away. If fresh water were a bank account, the world’s spending deficit against that account would be deeply in the red and approaching a tipping point of default. And in precisely the same way the U.S. government borrows money to cover today’s expenses with no intention of ever paying it back, human society is also borrowing water to cover today’s water demands with no intention or capability of ever paying it back.
Right now in California and around the world, farmers are pumping water out of the ground that should have remained there until the year 2030. As they keep pumping the aquifers dry, they’ll be reaching ever more precariously forward into the future, using up water in 2015 that should have lasted until 2050 (or beyond).
In this same way, aquifers that should have lasted 100 – 200 years will be bone dry in the not-too-distant future. Farms that once produced food will instead produce a new Dust Bowl. Populations that depended on cheap food to afford basic living expenses will find themselves starving and bankrupt (and living on government food stamps, with the accompanying loss of freedom that always follows government handouts). The world’s governments — all of which rely on food affordability to keep populations relatively docile — will find themselves facing mass revolts and social chaos.
You are about to watch a milestone event in the history of our world
Unless some miraculous rain reverses the extreme drought, the city of Sao Paulo is about to experience a literal “dry run” of this scenario in as little as 60 days. The history of human civilization has never witnessed a city of 20 million people run out of water before, and no one knows exactly how such a scenario might play out. But whatever happens, a far worse rendition of the crisis will inevitably unfold across Las Vegas, Southern California, North Texas and the Arizona cities of Phoenix and Tucson. And so the citizens of the world will greedily drink down the very last drop of water remaining. They will fill their fuel tanks with the last gallon of gas; clear-cut the last remaining forest; fish the oceans into mass marine extinction; mine the last remaining rare earth elements out of the ground; and dam up the last free-flowing river on the planet. The appetite of Earthlings for immediate satiation and quick-turnaround profits can only lead to self-destruction.
Have no illusions that if oxygen in the atmosphere could be turned into solid gold, people everywhere around the world would be incessantly mining the atmosphere for profit until the entire global population died of asphyxiation. With their very last breath, they’d be saying, “But I’m RICH!”

You can look at Lake Mead and see a ring around it showing that the water level has dropped over 100 feet. It is now just a few feet from falling below the intakes for Hoover Dam. That means no electricity in addition to no water.

Yep Genius, thought about all of this when I became an adult, Living in the Midwest, I took a half dozen vacation trips out to California, and the same with Florida to find a warmer climate. Loving the Warmer water and prettier beaches in Florida, it was Hands down Florida, been here now 20+ years, and No Regrets. Plenty of fresh water every where. Only people in Cali I feel sorry for are the Wine Growers. I also saw the earth quake damage out there. Crazy.

Whatching the weather this morning , i see its raining in SoCal right now , and the weather dude is predicting a wetter than normal winter for the south west .

However, the article doesn’t mention with regards to California, that there are 15 Desalination Plants in the works with the first one coming online in 2016. Oil is cheap so there is enough energy to move the water to higher elevations.
Israel and Saudi Arabia have been using desalination for the longest time. It does work.
If they use the desalinated water for industrial and irrigation purposes, Cali should be OK because then the fresh water aquifers can meet the consumption demand…..unless of course immigration skews the population.

Any and all coastal counties should have desal plants and if they have to supply water to interior counties, they should have to pay through the nose or buy land on coast or pipe the seawater in and run it through a desal plant.

Driving by Lake Shasta this past September, my husband and I were shocked. We had never seen it so low. Where there use to be inlets there were only trickling streams.

Relax. Shasta was much lower in the 76-77 drought. The experts said it would take years to bring back. three weeks into the 78 Winter it was full again. You are wrong about Las Vegas. There is so much water flowing down the colorado they could double their population and still not run out of water. They may some day have to stop wasting so much water but they won’t run out of water for households.
When Lake Meade goes so does the lower Colorado. They already did emergency construction to place new water entry pipes that are 125 feet lower than the old ones. No rain will mean no water in two years.

I’ve already eliminated all my grass and water sucking plants, replaced with vegetables and fruit trees that’ll grow here. 75% of the planet surface is covered in water, yet we can’t figure a way to tap that resource. You are no genius. I too lived in Vegas and the level of lake Mead is irrelevant. There is more water coming down the Colorado then the city of Las Vegas could ever use. All of that water is “owned” by someone and in fact 150% of the water is allocated to someone. But when push comes to shove Las Vegas will either get priority over farm use of the water OR more likley simly buy the water rights. Farm water is incrediby cheap costing perhaps a penny on the dollar for what city water users pay. So simply giving the farmer the going price for their water allocation would make the farmer rich beyond their wildest dreams. However it is more likely that the dry cycle will end before this becomes critical and we will once again see Lake Mead overflowing.

I too have been to Lake Meade and Hover Dam and the White Brim around lake Meade was maybe 10 to 15 Ft back in the 70’s as they raised it that high to test it.

The dropping level since the reservoir was last full in 1998, at just under 1,296 feet above sea level, has left as much as 130 feet of distinctive white mineral “bathtub ring” on hard rock surfaces surrounding the lake.
Davis said the bureau expects a slight increase in water level to about 1,083 feet by Jan. 1, 2015.

Climate is changing. Then again, the earths climate never stops changing. Two factors making the problem worse. One – 7 billion humans. Two – earth’s climate is cooling a bit. When climate cools it gets drier.
And that salt is a valuable desirable by product. Every city & state in the north needs salt to combat winter road conditions. Maybe we could shut down some of the salt mines? I would welcome dumping any extra on the bonnieville salt flats. The lake bed has been deteoriating over the years. I frequently attend the speed week there. This year it was rained out. flooded the race course.

I lived in AZ for 20 something years and water was cheap then but we still conserved water by having a lawn of small rounded river stones and 4 huge Paloverde trees for shade. We had a large drip line fed garden as well. We really didn’t use much water even with a household of 5 persons compared to our neighbors who had lawns and I know this for a fact because I was a grade three certified water/wastewater technician for our town.
When I moved back to Northern OH, the abundance of water was a pleasant surprise and of course I now have a big lawn and garden which I seldom have to water and of course there’s that big assed Lake Erie where we get our drinking water from. I recently helped a friend move his Grandmother’s stuff out of her basement because she was going into assisted living and was amazed to find a brick cistern which stored fresh rainwater for household use back in late 1800’s before water lines were run to the house. My buddy and his friends used the dried up cistern as a fort when they were kids and apparently this was a common feature back in the day in most rural homes ( the home is smack dab in the middle of a good sized town now ).
The water storage was interesting because the property already had a well.
As for myself, I have 2 55 gallon water drums that collect rainwater and both toilets are the low water usage models because the 3rd party water supplier that our community uses are complete thieves. When I moved into my home my water and sewage bill was around 17 dollars a month. Three years later it was 70 dollars a month! We all banded together and filed a class action suit and it took 2 years to settle. The water company settled very quickly when our committee found that we could bring RICO charges on the executives of the company. We also found corruption at the state and county/city level as well, that forced the utility to come to terms in a timely manner. Sometimes the little guy does win!
My monthly water bill is now around 27 dollars.
Water is life as a previous poster said. We try to conserve our water and keep our water bill as low as possible which is kind of ironic considering how abundant H2O is around here.
I have always found it amusing that people from water rich areas who move into the semi arid parts of our country want to have green lawns and fauna that require much more water than the native plants. I reckon that’s the nature of us humans though.
Saw something on PBS about Sicily the other day. When the Romans moved into Sicily en masse there were large tracts of forests which they promptly cut down so they could plant wheat and other grains. They didn’t know that removing damned near every tree for agricultural use would turn the island into an arid place. The ancient Mayans did the same thing. We need to take a lesson from their mistakes and find a balance in our agriculture, our forests and our water use so we can continue to thrive and grow as a nation. Common sense would help.

The Ogallala Aquifer from Texas through Kansas and beyond is running dry. Government policy did it.
Prices supports and other farm subsidies over the years gave farmers the incentive to bring in marginal land and pump water up from the aquifer that natural rainfall and market prices would not have made possible.
In a short sixty years the once rich land is now but a side issue. The soil is a formality only there to hold the plants upright while they gain sustenance from the tons of fertilizers soaked in each year. Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and defoliants drain into the city water supplies giving cancer to those who drink it year after year.
Surface water washes these poisons into the few lakes that cities draw drinking water from. There is no escape from the vote buying started by FDR and continued by both parties to today. All to purchase farm state senators.
Like someone posted, nature will have the last laugh. Nature will right herself. In a thousand years this land will once again be growing thick grass, the aquifer will recharge and the springs and rivers once again flowing. Welfare farmers will only be a subject of study by historians, if the Chinese wish to investigate.
gls your correct. Here in Arkansas we are located above the Sparta aquifer. They grow mostly rice and its just thousands of acres of hydroponics. They are depleting the aquifer. Springs and Well,s go dry. In NE Ar. every summer the irrigators pump the Forchie river completely dry. The larger black river is reduced to a small stream. And they used to run steam boats up the backs river. they farm so clean that all weeds & grass are poisoned. Then they burn off the stubble after harvest and the dust storms blow all the lighter organic material away. Now they are building a chicken processing plant that will pump 2 million gallons of water per day. and work 1000 persons. those folks will likely be from south of the border. the influx of their litters of children into the public schools will be costly. As a result property taxes will skyrocket.
I disagree with Mike’s assessment of water resources in the Phoenix metro area. (Love NaturalNews, read almost every day) Phoenix has adopted water restriction laws a long time ago (unlike California). Vast majority of new homes built during the housing boom have HOAs that require low-water desert landscaping…usually gravel based. Also, reclaimed water has been in use on golf courses and parks for years. A big majority of fresh water used in Phx is from renewable snow melt and surface water that comes off the mountains every winter. There is an intentional process to take reclaimed water and pump it into the ground (percolating down) to recharge ground aquifers. New developments are required to purchase rights or show that the development has a reliable source of water for the next 50yrs. All this to say…Phx aint runnin out of water anytime soon. Another desert area that has tons of water is southern Idaho. Boise area has more green grass along roadways than Phx.–Again, massive resources from snow melt.
I see the problem with southern California water is gross mismanagement of the water canal system (leads to water loss), continued postponement of meaningful water conservation strategies (too much high water landscaping), and continued flood irrigation techniques of farmland (Israel turned the desert green decades ago with drip irrigation). What’s even more concerning is even with areas actually having to truck in water because the pipes are dry…no meaningful strategies are being implemented with any sense of urgency.
I’m glad to hear that my former home state is taking common sense measures to conserve water and still provide clean potable water resources and for recreation.
I’m hoping to get to AZ this spring or summer, see friends and family and tube down the Salt River. I’ve been away for way too long.
