As the first month of the year concludes, it’s becoming clear that 2019 will be a very different kind of year.
The near-decade of ‘recovery’ following the Great Financial Crisis enjoyed a stability and tranquility that suddenly evaporated at the end of 2018.
Here in 2019, instability reigns.
The world’s central banks are absolutely panicking. After last year’s bursting of the Everything Bubble, their coordinated plans for Quantitative Tightening have been summarily thrown out the window. Suddenly, no chairman can prove himself too dovish.
Jerome Powell, the supposed hardliner among them, completely capitulated in the wake of the recent -15% tantrum in stocks, which, as Sven Henrich colorfully quipped, proved what we suspected all along:
The global tsunami of liquidity (i.e. thin-air money printing) released by the central banking cartel has been the defining trend of the past decade. It has driven, directly or indirectly, more world events than any other factor.
And one of its more notorious legacies is the massive disparity and wealth and income resulting from its favoring of the top 0.1% over everyone else. The mega-rich have seen their assets skyrocket in value, while the masses have been mercilessly squeezed between similarly rising costs of living and stagnant wages.
How have the tone-deaf politicians responded? With tax breaks for their Establishment masters and new taxes imposed on the public. As a result, populist ire is catching fire in an accelerating number of countries, which the authorities are anxious to suppress by all means to prevent it from conflagrating further — most visibly demonstrated right now by the French government’s increasingly jack-booted attempts to quash the Yellow Vest protests:
Meanwhile, two other principal drivers of the past decade’s ‘prosperity’ are also suddenly in jeopardy.
China’s once-unstoppable economic growth engine is now sputtering badly. The slowdown is so pronounced that it’s now feared it will drag world GDP down to a decade low this year:
And all those headlines that claimed the US shale oil ‘miracle’ has ushered in a new era of over-abundant cheap domestic oil? Well, as we’ve long warned, it’s becoming clear that promise was dangerously overhyped. It’s recently been exposed that the shale operators — who have never made a profit as an industry — have been overstating their output by as much as 50%. That, plus a host of geological and financing challenges, is making the future production prospects of the Permian and other major shale basins look a lot dimmer:
Is The Permian Bull Run Coming To An End?
With the big Wall Street players now questioning the value of their existing investments in shale oil, the industry is finding it hard to raise money. Not a single bond sale has come off since November in an industry which must continuously raise capital to survive.
To add to the problems, the future of U.S. shale oil production seems to be in the Permian Basin in Texas which has been providing the lion’s share of oil production growth for the entire country. But ongoing drought in an already arid West Texas has raised doubts about whether the Permian will have enough water to meet all the demand for fracking new wells.
If the needed capital is not forthcoming, it means that companies will be faced with declining revenues from declining production. With lower operating cash flow and little access to additional capital, these companies will be unable to drill enough wells to offset declining ones. That means even lower revenues in the future which will mean even lower investment in new wells. That’s what a death spiral looks like.

Mix together a slowing global economy hopelessly addicted to central bank stimulus, festering social unrest and an approaching oil price spike/supply squeeze. The result?

Why don’t you try it to see what’s involved and doing a small experimental batch? Ask locals when they do it. Try making your spiles.
This is being practical versus the generalities in the article.
You also might try a 3 day fast to see what that feels like or going two day without water or 48 hours without sleep(but don’t drive).
You could experiment by putting up a cloche row and then take temerature readings to see how warm it gets over the course of the day. But killing frost can happen and the soil is cold.
Heck, have the kids do these things with your guidance. Mentor some neighbor and volunteer to test their soil with your kit. If really interested, try the old school ways to determine pH without a kit and see what results you get.

Here is a general planting guide per season. As you can see, what is listed for spring has very low calories. As the soil is warm enought, like March 15 here locally, you can plant carrots and turnips, so while they help, they are low calories.
This long gap from March to late May getting crops in was a rough patch. People surviving the winter began running out of food in January if the ate too much and didn’t reduce their physical activity, because cabin fever leads to overeating.

Well, I don’t know about full on collapse but in answer to your query about “what makes it special”…
Everything tends to happen in 10 year cycles give or take. This has been going on for quite some time. I don’t even pretend to understand why this happens, but having observed it… I mean you don’t have to know oceanography to know that the waves are coming in at the beach at roughly 45 second intervals and you don’t want your feet getting wet.
So, given the last crash was around 2008… something’s baked in right about now.
Now you add to that… exactly HOW the last recession “ended” (or rather didn’t). It ended “in simulation” more or less. The market didn’t so much fix itself as it got a gobsmacking ton of free cash thrown at it.
There’s no more free cash (ish… certainly not enough of it… so whatever happens this time will be whatever would have happened last time if there wasn’t the free cash).
Now you add to that what’s about to happen with tariffs, which don’t get me wrong… needs to happen. Eventually. At the start of a “scheduled” downturn might… not be the best possible strategic choice on that matter. So that’s going to make it worse than worse.
Also just heard people are getting average 8% less on their tax refunds this year. Not sure of the validity of that statement, but having just run through a first cut of mine, I can see where that could be possible. There’s something really funny with the state tax write-off in the federal 1040. It doesn’t affect me so I didn’t pay that close of attention to it, someone else chime in here, but something’s… kinda not there with it. There’s an entry for it in the Schedule A still but not in the 1040, and it doesn’t affect the math in the same way if it’s not on the 1040. Again, I was up to my eyeballs in other issues, so since it had no direct effect on me I sort of shrugged and moved on with life instead of running a simulation where it actually mattered, but I mean something’s fishy there.

Started my compost pile today, will construct a raised bed garden by the end of Feb. here in North/central Florida.
The Church we worship at does a “Farm Share” food give-a-way every 2-3 weeks. This Saturday we had 130 families show up for help. Many could not speak any English.
I am most concerned by the Communist “Resistance Movement” opposing President DJT. They are not backing down on illegal immigration and he/us is not backing down on controlling our borders. Russian media has been predicting a coming Civil War 2, for over 10 years and I believe it is coming this Spring.

Lose weight is not hard. Resting metabolic burn is 2200 calories for males, 1800 for females. Every 3000 calorie deficit = 1 pound burned off.
So it’s just arithmetic. Forget Atkins, forget Keto, forget all that stuff, that’s just to get the last 5%. They make this seem impossibly scientific when it’s merely arithmetic.
Say you eat 1100 calories a day. This isn’t hard. Roughly two grilled chicken breasts, veggies, PowerAid Zero or Sprite Zero (soda is your enemy, soda packs it on faster than anything in creation, you might as well be drinking pure lard. I never believed this then I looked at the calories on the label). Kind of regular one meal a day middling to small portion size. Walk 3 miles a day. Yes, correct, WALK, that’s it. I dropped 17 pounds in 6 weeks doing this. Exactly this.
Then you take a few month break, just don’t eat more than 1800 calories those few months and your weight just holds. I’m presently doing this. It works.
6 weeks / few months / 6 weeks / few months… repeat till it’s gone. You’ll probably have issues with the last 10 pounds, this is where the hard core BS comes in, but I mean come on it’s 10 pounds. Nobody cares. I certainly don’t.

Intake: 1100 calories
Burn: 250 + resting metabolism = let’s just average it, 2200 for men, 1800 for women, call it 2000 for easier math here.
So burn is 2250 calories
So Deficit is burn minus intake. Which is 1150 a day, deficit.
3000 calories = 1 pound, at this rate you should be losing 1 pound every 3 days.
In my experience it’s more like every 4 or so roughly, it fluctuates a little based on water retention which can account for up to 2 to 3 pounds, but basically my first attempt tracked to this prediction almost exactly.
You can’t eat less than 1100, you’ll go insane. I tried it. I mean you can but expect your mood to be awful. So if you want it to come off faster, you’ll have to do more exercise. But again, there’s a cap on this too, your muscles give up on you, particularly if you’re carrying around the equivalent of a jacket stuffed with 50 pounds worth of dead weight (also known as your body fat).
Want it to come off faster, get an elliptical machine off Craigslist, watch movies while you do that for an hour. That burns about 850 calories an hour.
But going past 4 to 5 pounds a week is dangerous so, I mean… might want to do one or the other (walking or elliptical). Your legs aren’t going to be able to do that forever and you’ll need to start supplementing with protein powder to help the muscles recover. Isopure brand is really good stuff.
There are no fat people in a concentration camp so all can lose weight by diet and exercise.
The old inexpensive walk around the block is the way to start if someone is badly out of shape.
The el cheapo exercise ab wheel is a great way to firm up abdominal muscles. Push ups, sit up, leg lifts, pull up including wide grip, dips, etc.
Don’t run more than 5 miles as mostly that is bad for people after age 40. Wear a knee brace before you start having issues. Run 5Ks with your family and even grade school kids can do that.
By this time, you should start working a heavy bag and wearing decent boxing gloves. Jump rope and doing rapid skipping and double jumps.

Make sure you’ve got good knives/blades. keep them sharpened by stropping them. Stropping will keep most decent blades free of the wire you leave on the edge after you sharpen them with stone or diamond rod. Leaving the wire on the edge will dull the knife faster than anything.
Technically you can even strop a modern disposable razor blade by using a piece of old blue jeans, but I can’t strop it enough. Have you been successful?

I had an antique hand crank strop at one time. You put your double edge razor blade in and cranked it. It even flipped the blade and stropped the other side when it was cranked.
I picked it up at a sale about ten years ago thinking it would be great for when the SHTF. Later someone offered me a pretty penny for it and since the S never HTF, I sold it to them.

This is a very easy craft in which you merely find an inexpensive carrier oil and add a few drops of essential oil, get a inexpensive bottle from a craft store (just for aesthetics and to tightly seal it as oxidation is the enemy of oil quality), or recycle a bottle. Once you have these ingredients, you can make your own massage oil (typically the carrier oil is almond) aa well.
This means if you make your own ethanol, then your wife and daughters can make their own very high quality perfume which are outrageously expensive if purchased. If you don’t make your own ethanol, a very inexpensive vodka serves as the substitute.
If you have that, you can make your own extracts like vanilla as long as you get some bulk vanilla beans.
All of these things build on each other and saves you money and for some reason, ladies are hardwired to be crafty. Heck, they could make their own scented stationary or make their own paper and bind it to make journals.

I make my own strops using oak boards (8″LX 2.5″W X1/2″. Glue the smooth cowhide up on one side with contact cement. Turn the other cowhide with the rough side up and glue it down on the other side. Allow 24 hours to cure. I purchase the leather from “Michaels”. A piece of cowhide 11 inches by 8.5 inches will cost you 12 bucks. The oak board I bought at Lowes and cost me four bucks. I use these mostly to sharpen my blades and only rarely use the diamond rods. Remember if you use a strop you have to move the blade away from you using about a 20 degree angle. I have also made strops using old belts and they’ll do just as well. I’ve made strops that were only five inches in length to carry in my packs.
The Spyderco Triangular Sharpener is a very great system and I’ve sharpened neighbors and friends blades and scissors with it. Since it’s locked at an angle, and has a finishing stone, there isn’t much residue. You definitely can shave with most any blade once using it. You can sharpen axes and swords with it.
As you get older, your hands have a minute tremor, so this really helps.
