The only thing that seems to be constant in our society is change, and today America is changing at a pace that is more rapid than we have ever seen before. But is that a good thing or a bad thing? For a moment, I would like for you to imagine what it would be like for a group of average Americans from 1919 to suddenly be transported to our time. How do you think that they would feel about what we have become? Certainly they would be absolutely amazed by our advanced technology, but beyond that they would almost certainly have very strong opinions about the current state of our society. Similarly, if any of us were suddenly transported 100 years into the future, I am sure that we would be completely and utterly shocked by how things had changed. The decisions that we make today are going to echo long into the future, and if we make very bad decisions there might not be a future for our country at all.
The following are 35 mind blowing facts about America that previous generations of Americans never would have believed…
#1 Approximately one-fourth of the entire global prison population is in the United States.

We have way too many “leaders” out there that are simply filling seats. Our country is literally falling apart at the seams, and all they can think about is protecting their careers.
America desperately needs change, but unfortunately we have very few change agents. So we continue to steamroll toward our date with destiny, and time is not on our side.

So Steve you are not surprised that today you can’t make it on$35,000 but back in the day you could with $1,386. I am surprised that you stand unaffected in your mind set. I am surprised that you have to pay more than $15 per credit hour! which today is less than half the requirement than when I paid $15 per credit hour in college. And that doesn’t bother you? Today for me to take one credit hour at the University across the street which is a PUBLIC University, I have to pay over $900 per credit hour… But back in the day it was only $15 and we did not have all those extra fees. It doesn’t bother you that I only worked 9.38 hours to pay for one credit in College, and today I would have to work 123 hours for the credit hour today.. and again it does not bother you?

In January 1990, if you made $15,496 per year, the equivalent amount in December 2018 would be about $30,533.
That is insane. People in rural Western Kentucky as janitors at a factory made $30,000 in 1990. That was a very common wage in the larger cities of Western Kentucky as well as in Southern Indiana. You could have a high education or a GED and be making twice what 50% of Americans earn today.

In 1982, a common job as an entry level lab technicain, doing cookbook chemistry ie just like following the directions in a recipe, could easily earn $15,600. Those folks got healthcare, 2 weeks of vacation, profit sharing, and limited tuition reimbursement.
The equivalent salary alone (not benefits) would be $41,561 in December 2018.
Allone needed was a high school education with a math and science background as they liked to promote from within and recruited candidates who slowly would acquire a BS in Chemistry. And those folks had a guaranteed path to lab assistant, team leader, on up into low level management.
Factories often had lab technicians to do quality control and assurance.
Started at DuPont in 1976 @ $5.66 / hr + great benefits. Started at the Oil Refinery in 1979 8.50 / hr likewise same benefits. Same story and numbers, different location.

I’m honored.I learn from many on the BB, you included. Read encyclopedias as a kid, stuttered pretty bad, learning by reading was my escape, my communication. Stuttering stopped and I haven’t shut up since.

Not really. At that point it’s not knowledge its action. I’m a decent shot but don’t have a killer instinct. Gave up hunting decades ago. I know how things work but I’m not great at fixing them. Refinery skills were operations not maintenance. Too old (over 60) and too unhealthy (couple of heart attacks) to be of any real good. Have a good friend that is like McGiver except a great shot too; skilled hunter, mechanic including diesel, certified welder, electrician, 2+ yrs college in engineering and well read. He is the man to have when TSHTF. I just educate the masses as much as possible to the potential and current problems.
Only thing upsets me on this BB is the crazy calls for violence and hatred.

Due to various social-engineering and political projects official figures are skewed / manipulated to always show white being the (privliged) majority.
Unofficial figures, ie those that consider illegal immigration (and exclude any groups not of ‘only’ White European ancestry), show that less than 50% of the US population is actually White.
Many very good studies have now confirmed that the minority population in the United States (and in certain European Countries such as the UK, with Germany and France close behind) is actually WHITE.
Indeed, White is the GLOBAL MINORITY race – there are c.7Billion people on the planet of which less than 1Billion are white.
It is estimated that in less than 30 years any white populations outside of the US, Europe, and Australia (ie white populations living in South Africa, Middle East, Asia, South America, etc) will be EXTINCT. Elsewhere the white race will be the minority – by far – especially if uncontrolled migration into Europe and the United States is allowed to continue.

I haven’t seen the latest numbers, but I’m sure we in the US have over 400 million acres of land designated as “cropland” and we are only using about 75 – 80% of it.
We probably have about 100 million acres of the 400 that we are raising forage crops on to feed animals.
The Furriners own less than 10% of it.
Further, we have another 400 million acres of pasture. plains, and range land some of which could be pressed into service as “cropland.”
The fact is we are raising our food on what we could call #1 Land.
If needed, we have multiplied millions of acres that we could raise food on, but the penalty for this shift to less productive land would be higher food prices NOT lack of production.
Exhibit “A” is right here in GA.
I raise good quality fruits and vegetables on amended pasture soil whose base is Georgia Red Clay.
If we North Georgians had to feed ourselves based on what we could grow and animals we could raise, we would have to work hard, but likely make a go of it.
South Georgia has some wonderful dirt and would do even better.
There are other States that have much better #2 (or lower) Land than GA that nobody is using for agriculture right now.
Again, we are so incredibly blessed in the US with productive soil that we are just using the best of the best to grow our food.

Rail Cars
Freight such as shelled corn might be transported in either jumbo hopper cars or freight cars, also called box cars. A jumbo hopper car can carry about 100 tons of cargo, or 3,500 bushels, which equates to roughly 200,000 pounds. A 125-ton freight car can carry 125 tons, or about 4,450 bushels, which equals about 250,000 pounds. The train is capable of traveling at higher speeds, and a truck must wait at a crossing, while the train always has the right of way.
Barges
A standard-size barge operating on the Mississippi River has a cargo capacity of 1,500 tons, or 52,500 bushels, which works out to a colossal 3 million pounds. While the barge carries as much as 15 jumbo hopper cars, floods or periods of low water may limit when or where it can operate. Barges are normally tied together into 15 barge “tows.”
Barges vs. Trucks
The 15-barge tow has a total cargo capacity of 22,500 tons, or 787,000 bushels. It would require a fleet of 870 53-foot dry vans to haul the same quantity of freight. But the barge is captive to the river, whereas the truck can travel virtually anywhere
Barges vs. Trains
In comparing the 15-barge tow to the jumbo hopper car, you would need 225 of them to carry the equivalent amount of cargo. But like the dry van trailer, the advantage the train enjoys is access to more locations along with fewer environmental limitations. This comparison clearly demonstrates why all three elements of surface transportation infrastructure must work in concert.”
As late as 2005 or so, local guys were still trying to get hired at the railroads. For years I encouraged young guys who had no plans to consider working on a river barge.
They went to husband and wife trucking teams and many without children tried it.
If anybody needs work, the school systems are always looking for bus drivers and it pays a decent wage for part time.

I have family members working railroad jobs and they’re on call 24/7 and typically work 17-21 days on and get 3-4 days off,but they’re always on call even on days off.The average work day is 12-14 hours,and it can be brute labor.The biggest reasons why railroad jobs and OTR trucking jobs are always at high demand is because of the long hours, and time away from family.Railroad workers usually drive to the work site,and sometimes that means several states away..Don’t be mislead by slick ad copy.The trucking industry is full of dispatchers that will tell inexperienced drivers EXACTLY what they want to hear,but as soon as that rookie driver gets out on the road they know they’ve been fed a line of BS..

How times (or people) have changed. The Oil Refinery was a coveted job. Rotating shift work, weekends and holidays were just another day. Worked many a Christmas and was ecstatic to have such a job (which was interesting too).

Craftsmen worked during summer shutdown when everyone else was on vacation. And they often worked second shift 12 hours, then double backed by being called in. There were times I routinely got only four hours off. Rotated shifts, worked insane hours.

I’m surprised that some of the abandoned shopping malls under roof haven’t been converted to upscale apartments / condos / townhouses. They could make an enclosed community; a dream for the progressives. Solar on the roof, green space in the atrium. A few stores, grocery store, Dr / Dentist, satellite police station, plenty of parking, maybe an organic greenhouse too. The buildings are close to major transportation and often built like a damn bunker.
I dislike wasted anything.
A brilliant grantwriter could likely get funded to transform a stripmall into a urban homesteading project deminstrating various frugal ways to produce food, superinsulate it, put various solar and wind energy on it, create an apiary, etc.
Think outside the box. People have been doing urban homesteading since the llate seventies. There actually are guerilla gardeners who go into a place plagued by urban blight and plant a garden without permission.
I have read that old shopping malls would be great buildings for the homeless. They are already surrounded by parking lots, have toilet facilities, food courts, could have shower areas etc. etc. Could have areas for job training, child care,actual jobs right there.

She wants to ban all fossil fuels and change us over to solar and wind. Solar is OK for a backup source since we have one at the BOL but it can never work for a primary source. It will take about 8 years to break even,

Some of my neighbors have Grid tied systems.
The last power interruption we had, on a sunny day,
they lost power, because their systems are NOT
designed to operate independent of the Grid.
My design allows for solar to be the primary
source of power. The most expensive part of the

relik, Glad you liked my suggestion. I would do the same thing except I have transport/ positioning issues. I have another suggestion for you! For hot water you can take a few panels and wire them directly to the element of an electric water heater. There is a company (I forget the name) that makes thermostats that stick to the side of the tank and control the heat. Usually you have the solar element on the bottom of the tank and grid powered element on the top for backup. I used to install the glycol circulating solar water systems and this is hundreds of times cheaper and more efficient. No plumbing, no glycol, no freezing, no hassle at all! 2- 250 watt panels will heat a normal households water during the day with normal sun. Add more if you need say 1000 watts of panels and a huge tank. You can also keep livestock water tanks from freezing (like you need that) with a 250 watt and an electric element. Just an FYI and it is seperate from your house array.
Have had solar water heater for last 18 years. Works great. circulates tank water through panels on the roof. It is mandatory here on all new houses.

38 cents a KWH, that has to be the highest I’ve ever heard of. Hawaii must be ground zero for wind and solar. A $500 month bill is likely the norm with $1000 quite common. One would think that there is some geothermal potential. I had read in Power Magazine that distillate (#2 oil) was used in GTGs to generate power there. Propane may be a main fuel too.

My bill for two houses and 60X40 shop is under $500. No heat, or A/C and hot water is solar and propane.

Most power is generated on #2 by HELCO, but a local plant also runs DC-10 jet engine turbines on Naptha?
There is some wind here, but very limited. It kills a lot of precious “Hawaiian” birds and locals shoot out the irritating marker lights.
Solar is really pricey because of contractors, ripoff mainland shipping costs, and US government policy. I could give you a 5 or 6 page paper on how to beat the system, but it isn’t pretty, cheap, or completely legal.

You cost is in the very expensive fuel. I ran some numbers of BTUs per $. #2 at $1.50 gallon (likely cost at your location – tax) is 850 BTUs per $. Natural gas is 35 cents per therm (100,000) BTUs for 2857 BTUs per $. The relative cost for oil is 3.3 x natural gas. You’re paying roughly 3.3 x in KW. It’s relative. The democrats may be holding back GeoThermal and Wind but as it stands it’s your fuel cost.
So no one is confused the above is BTUs per penny.
Gas Turbine combined cycle plants have broke the magic 50% thermal efficiency. Generally they’re in the mid / high 30s. Peaking units exhausting the heat to atmosphere from the GTG are 20% or thereabouts. They’re the cheapest cost of installed generation abet the least efficient. I suspect your grid has quite a few to meet peak mid day demand.
The problem is not dems or reps, it is anyone in DC. They are bought and paid for and care nothing for those in the states they are supposed to represent.

The University I graduated from(Class of 90)required chapel attendance for everyone on Wednesdays and Church on Sundays. They took names.
The University I attended prior to that one, required attendance at Mass, and they took names.
I was excused as I was a “commuter” student and did not live on campus or in University provided housing.

I have noticed that cheap RV parks are popping up all our my area. Like $300 a month RV parks. Not crappy homeless people RV parks either, but nice looking ones with basic hook-ups.
There are a LOT of RV youtube channels too. Lots of people living in their RVs and surviving on their $1200 a month social security checks.

I once visited her there and saw many many RV’s were parked on the AZ side. The little old ladies and husbands would walk or wheel chair, across the bridge to Laughlin, NV to gamble, eat at the Buffet, and get free drinks while

When the SHTF, one of the ways you can cope is by making kerosene. When you heat up coal or some shale in a reactor, it sweats kerosene. That can be collected. The first kerosene lanterns were invented in the 9th century in the Middle East. It’s not perfect but it works.
Oil lamps do not produce the candela or lumens that a kerosene lantern produces. You could extract canola oil from rapeseed, or in some places grow sesame. Other than this, historically you can use olives but not in most of the USA. There’s a possibility of using walnuts but what a waste of resources plus the labor makes it foolish.
Plastics are long chain hydrocarbons. You can put plastic in a reactor and heat it very hot, and the fumes go through a condensor, and that can be transformed into usable fuel. That’s well established. Lots of survivors would try that. The problem is temperature regulation for heating the reactor.
Since fuel will go bad from water vapor, if you run it through a chamois, that will wick up the water.
But eventually, you could take grease from a grease pit (found at lots of restaurants) and turn that ito biodiesel, which some people already do. There are crude ways you could do a one time refuel of a vehicle that would help you bug out, but ruin a vehicle in the process, so it would help you get 100-150 miles away…at least. Rinse repeat and maybe you are in safe zone.
How to make emergency fuel. It wouldn’t be pure. It seperates into two layers and requires methanol. You could siphon it off, put it in the empty tank of an abandoned car, and drive it far enough to get out of Dodge.

Say you are bugging out, and holing up along the way, you’d make some to get you going, and rinse repeat until you got to your destination.
Very few people know how to do that.
You can also acquire emergency fuel at auto parts stores, but few people would realize that and they would just quit looking as the gas stationed emptied, but you being equipped with this knowledge could harvest or trade for some.
If bugging in, you could keep your tractor and generator going by more refined methods. It’s not that complicated and why it’s often a science project or a low level high school engineering/chemistry project.
From all of the above, it sounds like America is about to get a really bad wake up call. Too many people are living in the past.

There are several manufacturers of emergency fuel and one is Magic Tank. It’s safe to store, and a smart scrounger after the SHTF would gather it up as harvesting from a gas tank would be unlikely as the fuel would most likely be commandeered, and even IF you could get it, you need non-sparking brass fittings and special spark arrestors or BOOM.
