What Does It Mean to “Prepare for the Economic Collapse”?

    Last week I wrote an article in response to the media’s vilification of preppers in the aftermath of the horrible tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.  The article was quoted in an article on Yahoo.com, to my great astonishment, and that is when I saw how little most people understand about prepping.  You can see in most of the 4492 comments the article received that many folks just don’t “get it”.

    My inbox was filled with a barrage of  hate mail and a number of people felt compelled to leave angry (and rather ignorant) comments on my website. I got messages from people that called me “batsh*t crazy”, messages from gun control advocates, messages from people who directly blamed me and all other preppers for the massacre, and even one particularly hate-filled email from a person who said “I hope that your kids are killed at the next school shooting.

    All of this leads me to reconfirm my belief that people sincerely do not understand why we do what we do, and that ignorance leads to fear.

    If you go back through history, the “visionaries” or “wise ones” were always mocked at best and feared at worst.  They were  cast out of society to live alone at the edge of the village; children would sneak onto their property to show their bravery; they were burned at the stake as witches and heretics.  Anything the larger percentage of people does not understand is treated as something evil and frightening.

    Am I saying that preppers are all visionaries and sages?  Not in a mystical “Joan of Arc” sense – but I am saying that preppers are willing to see the writing on the wall and search for a deeper understanding.

    Many preppers are preparing for an economic collapse and the subsequent social collapse that will be close behind.

    If you don’t think this is realistic, then you aren’t paying attention to the world around you.

    People have this image of hunger – they see it as the skeletal dark-skinned children in some third world country, bellies protruding as malnutrition sets in.

    But the face of hunger and poverty today is as close as your next door neighbor. Millions of North Americans can barely afford to put their next meal on the table. They are living in their cars, if they’re lucky, and without shelter if they are not so lucky.

    For many people the economic collapse has arrived. Their “end of the world” event has already occurred in the form of a job loss, the foreclosure of the family home, or an illness that has caused such massive personal debt that there is truly no way out of it.  Less than 60% of Americans who are of age to be in the work force have a full time job.  When you tally that, it means that more than 100 million people are out of work. More than 100 million people in the United States have no jobs.  For more than 100 million people, the economic collapse has arrived in full force.

    Meanwhile, as people all over the globe (think Greece, Italy, Spain, Argentina, the UK) struggle with high rates of unemployment, the prices of everything have gone up.  People are struggling to keep such simple necessities as running water and electricity. Grocery costs have skyrocketed – the World Bank released a statement that global food prices increased by 10% in ONE MONTH – July 2012.

    And it’s only going to get worse – the Farm Bill was blocked by the US House of Representatives, and this means that the prices will skyrocket, as farms are no longer subsidized.  This will cause the industry to revert to the Agricultural Act written in 1949, meaning that the government is obligated to purchase dairy products from farmers at a cost that is twice what they are receiving now – this means that the price of a gallon of milk may skyrocket in January to as much as $8 per gallon. This is not an endorsement of government subsidies – this is a simple cause and effect observation to explain the reason people will be shocked when they go to the dairy case come January.

    The price of food is increasing rapidly and dramatically.  Mac Slavo, of SHTFplan, wrote,

    “We’ve seen what happens in countries where the populace is forced to spend 50% or more of their earned income on food. Despite how the media portrays it, the riots we’ve seen in the middle east, Greece and Spain have been largely fueled by cost increases in food and the inability of individuals to provide the basic essentials for their families.

    Americans have been, for the most part, immune from these pressures thus far. But the social safety nets are very quickly becoming overburdened and prices at grocery stores are rising consistently and without pause.

    With the consumer economy coming to a standstill, continued central bank monetary easing, job losses and wage reductions, and the urbanization of millions of people, it is only a matter of time before Americans are forced to spend 50% or more of their paychecks just to stay alive.”

    When you read the above information, the case becomes clear for stocking a long-term food storage pantry. It makes personal economic sense to purchase commodities like grains for your family at today’s prices to be consumed when the price skyrockets even further.

    It seems, from some of the comments I’ve  seen and received from non-preppers, that stockpiling food is acceptable, if somewhat eccentric.  But being able to defend that food is strictly out of the question.

    For example:

    “I have no problem with anyone stockpiling water and food for their ability to prolong their agonizing but inevitable death should this generation experience the “end of the world”. Unless you have a new planet in your back pocket that is complete with a an oxygen supply, food and water, your efforts to live past the rest of us will be the least enjoyable time spent here on earth. I believe it is the preppers’ need for stockpiling ammunition that is the bizarre twist on these so-called survival skills that is the “killer”. Pardon my pun. You see, if your survival depends on killing others than the world in which you will exist will not be worthy of keeping.”

    They are delusional anti-social people. If you try to reason with them, you are attacked in the forums. You try to point out to them the truth, they slander you. These “preppers” should ALL be arrested , their food stockpiles distributed to the homeless, their guns conficated [sic]. Start with the people on the survivalist blogs.”

    With all due respct [sic], many people are missing the point. Our Constitution garentees [sic] us the right to bear arms, but not to stockpile an arsenal. You folks who stockpile food and supplies are wise. It is the guns and huge quantities of bullets that are the problem.

    Guns dont [sic] kill people. People who have no friends and have basements jammed full of ammo and canned goods kill people.

    You know…this is just a bunch of gun nuts going out and buying all the guns they can get before the laws become stricter. Just a bunch of weak people living in fear of nothing. I choose not to live in fear and if the apocalypse comes…oh well. Sure, I’ll stock up on food when a blizzard is in the forecast…but do I have an arsenol [sic] in my basement…no. Honestly, people like peppers need to stop thinking all hell is going to break loose, and just live in REALITY.

    So, this leads us to the next misconception about preppers – why do many prepared individuals feel that there might be social collapse to go along with the economic collapse?  Why do they feel that in the wake of a disaster that they and their families could be threatened?

    There are very good, well-documented reasons for this.  Recent history tells us that frightened, hungry people become desperate and often violent.

    In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, CNN reported that the city was under  siege.

    “Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown said his agency was attempting to work “under conditions of urban warfare.”  Police snipers were stationed on the roof of their precinct, trying to protect it from armed miscreants roaming seemingly at will.  Officers warned a CNN crew to stay off the streets because of escalating danger, and cautioned others about attempted shootings and rapes by groups of young men.”

    A similar experience occurred after Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast in October.  The unmitigated violence and looting had residents terrified, especially after dark.  Via Twitter, people actively planned “looting parties” as the storm bore down on the area, according to a report by Infowars.

    One resident described the scene to the Huffington Post. “People are turning on each other — they’re attacking each other. Even when there’s no disaster, this building is disastrous. But after the hurricane, it just got crazy.”

    Unfortunately, it isn’t just in the wake of a disaster that the need for personal security is rising.  As the economy plummets, violent crime is in the upswing.  In 2011, the overall rate of violent crime increased by 18%.  (The numbers aren’t in yet for 2012.  As funding to police departments is reduced, the criminals have a larger window of opportunity. The police are throwing up their hands in defeat – they feel that they cannot protect people. In Detroit, the police department warned people to enter the city at their own risk as budget cuts result in fewer police and shorter hours of operation.

    As the economic collapse increases and more and more people are going hungry, the need for proper security and self defense will also increase in a direct ratio, particularly for those who live in highly populated areas.  Desperation breeds crime.

    People must educate themselves on the relationship between economic  need and violent crime.  Only then can they make a reasonable (and morally acceptable) plan to protect themselves and their families.

    The economic collapse is not some far-fetched, end-of-the-world fantasy. It is the reality that is occurring all around us, incrementally.  The collapse that has been occurring since 2008 has been one of 1000 small cuts as income goes down and expenses go up.

    Ask the people in Greece whether they regret not having stocked up on food supplies when those supplies were abundantly available.  Ask the people in Argentina whether they feel the need to be armed against roving gangs and home invaders – violent crime increased by 35% in one year. One study went so far as to call property crime a tool of redistribution: ”Overall, these results suggest that property crime has been used as a redistributive tool for the poorest to compensate for their impoverishment during the last decade and in particular during the ultimate crisis in Argentina.”

    This stuff is not fantasy – I have provided links to support every fact I have mentioned in this article.  Hunger, cold, crime and fear are the daily realities in many countries that once enjoyed a similar standard of living to that of the average North American.  That debt-based standard of living is unsustainable, though, and you must be able to connect these trends with what is happening in your own country in order to see the need for preparation.

    For  those who say it is selfish for me to plan to take care of my responsibilities, I respond that it is selfish of you to expect me to take care of your responsibilities.  You have the same opportunities that I do to prepare.  I am far from wealthy (our income is actually below the “poverty line”) but I make room in my budget by eschewing foolish expenditures like twice-yearly vacations, new cars and the latest I-gadgets.

    I don’t live in fear – I live in security, knowing that through my personal responsibility, my trust in my own instincts and my faith, I have done everything possible to protect my family from poverty, hunger and crime. If you aren’t currently prepared, I hope that the facts and statistics I’ve provided cause you to consider doing the same thing.

      1. Preparation is pretty simple…

        An economic collapse isn’t much different from the others in this day and age, save for the fact that it occurs a bit slower at first, then (unless recovered from somehow) a fast crash at the end as the population finally revolts en masse.

        Normally, this would be no big deal, long-term: The French Revolution was caused by an economic collapse, after all.

        Problem is, back then the majority of folks were farmers, so no big deal… live off the land until it passed. Well, we can’t quite do that anymore. Most folks are urbanites now, and thanks to just-in-time inventories, plus a military that is too small to control the entire population (esp. once you figure tooth-to-tail ratios, defections, etc)? Yeah… this time the US would come apart in very short order, and I daresay the rest of the world would go with it.

        • Yup you pretty much nailed it. What’s scary is TPTB are the ones stoking the Collective flames much like in the Dark Ages.

          The scary part about the collapse is that when it happens the system that food and medicine relies on will be shutdown leaving everyone like those during Hurricane Sandy without basic supplies. If you did not prepare then the Gubmint or neighborly love will be your only options.

          And neighborly love will be far and few because everyone will want to stay alive.

          • You can help your neighbors out a bit if you get good at foraging, and the local ecology supports it. Foraging also helps ‘cover’ your own eating activities.

            I’m afraid that in such a situation, you have two choices: Either you and your neighbors band together as best you can, or they will certainly turn against you.

            • For some families the sh*t has already hit the fan and there are families that now live in their cars. Sad, but true.

                • Thank you for posting this article and link to “Families living in a car.” My family was one who lived in and out of a car for almost 2 years, and recently from May 2012 to November 2012 for a solid 6 mos. Until a most gracious Reverend who I met a year before, due to donating a gift certificate each month for a grocery store, after Hurricane Irene, heard our stories and decided to contact some associations whom she had known, and other parish priest whom we knew from the past also, and were able to raise funds for security and first months’s rent, and we obtained an emergeny voucher due to my son’s disability as a Young Stroke Survivor and my other son with disabilities whom obtain another voucher, were able to move into our Ranch house for a very afordable rent due to flood area where we were stranded before during Hurricane Irene. This has occurred to us in N.J. and there are a lot of families living in cars in N.J. also. Everything described in this article and video is absolutely correct. The American people need to “pull there head out of the sand” and see how dire our fellow Americans’ are really are and the situations are worsening every day in this beautiful country. So shameful and sad. The interesting part is we are long term unemployed professionals, some middle class families or moderate income families that are being affected by this economic downturn. It’s becoming a divided country “the rich and poor.” There will be no middle or moderate income families if we continue to not have an improvement in the economy and employment, and if the cost of living increases this situation will beome sooner than later a major collapse in our society. By the way, gas, insurance and maintenance was a major impact financially to our family, especially when gas prices continue to rise quickly, moving place to place and car breaking down regularly was a regular devfurniture, housewares, blinds,curtains, etc. but thank God we keep saying we are “NOT IN A CAR ANYMORE!” Please continue to provide artiles such as these and the media needs to make the public more aware of this increasing problem regularly.         • It strikes me if you prepare for an Econ Collapse you are pretty much ready for anything. Storms, earthquakes, and any other natural disaster would be far easier to one prepared for a failure of the monetary system then a person not.

          • Well said, Jim. I also believe that the best prepping is the most general. Stock up heavily on the basics that everyone needs but don’t ever think that there is a direct line from God’s lips to your ears… because there isn’t.

            Having food, water, water purification, meds, guns & ammo, a flashlight and a radio with batteries, trade goods, some silver, firewood or other fuel, a light source, and anything else that you need to maintain your health and life are the way to go. Getting too specialized in prepping could mean that not enough attention has been paid to the things that are good in general.

            I like the Doomsday Preppers show on NatGeo TV but always wonder what makes the people in the show so sure that their particular flavor of disaster is the one that will come. It might, but then again, it might not. If they are prepared for a super-volcano, for example, how prepared will they be for social unrest, hurricanes & tornadoes, or war. Perhaps they will not be as prepared in general as they think they are.

            I also do not like the “expert preppers” who cleave so strongly to what economists think. The economists who most often appear on TV have been 100% wrong on just about everything, especially for the past 4-5 years, and are the very last people I would look to for “expert advice” on the economy. John Williams at ShadowStats, John Taylor at Stanford Univ., and Peter Schiff are about the only economists I’ve read or listened to who are actually making sense in this crazy world today. The others all sound like Pollyanna, Bozo the clown, or a combo of these two. Not exactly the kind of info upon which I want to bet the lives, health, and safety of myself and my family.

          If you stand to the side of a billboard announcing “DANGER”, you won’t quite get the message.

          Why do we view it from the front, and others view it from the side? I guess that is the big question, no?

          No amount of debating is going to change anyone’s mind. They see things from one perspective, and we see things from another. Is one better? I suppose it depends on who you ask.

          But this I know. Our little experiment here was formed by men of great integrity and intelligence. And while they were products of their time, and lived with some customs we find abhorant today, the Plan they devised was well thought out and argued.

          They gave us fundamental rights and rules. They gave us an operating system, based on timeless principals. They also understood that customs evolve over time, and put in place mechinisms to effect change, if change was needed. The rules to change are strict. They are meant to be strict. It should be difficult to change our basic structure.

          Free speech? They couldn’t forsee the internet, or Facebook. Not in their wildest imagination. But the principal is the same.

          The 2nd Amendmant. Ah, the right of the People to bear arms. Never, in their craziest dreams, could they imagine the hardware that exists today. Never. No way. Nada. You win that argument.

          So one would think, hmmm??.. maybe a line like..The Governing Authority should dictate the arms allowed.
          Or… The Governing Authority should always have the more powerfull arms. Or… Every 100 years, We shall revisit this issue. Or… If we make it 200 years, this provision will expire. ( because, obviously, it won’t be needed)

          But they didn’t. They intended for the People (not the Government) to have the ultimate power.(Government of the People, for the People, by the People) And if the People are not armed, at least equally to the Government, the People would NOT have the Power.

          This is unique in the history of the world. For those reading this outside of the US, this is why we are a culture enamoured with our guns. For those in the US who don’t agree, your looking at the billboard from the side.That being said, there is a pathway to implementing your agenda. I say, go for it. Just be sure you go about it in the way proscribed by the Constitution. Because if you do not, you will surely unleash a force better left fallow.

          • Rick: why do you insist on keep telling folks to use the “pathway” to do Their agenda(ban guns etc)?…How many of us need remind you that “INALIENABLE” God given “BIRTH RIGHTS” are NOT negotiable, nor “ammendable”?

            Inalienable Means that and NO other. So sorry but NO they and nobody can amend away the 2nd into oblivion.

            It also ties in with we aint now nor ever been a “Democracy” because that is what democracys does…Two wolvws and One sheep votes on Who to eat for din din..

            In a Const, REPUBLIC, it is an WELL armed sheep Contesting that wolves vote.

            Please stop saying that stuf as its simply wrong advice ok…The rest is A-1 spot on…Oh and if you saw my post like this last time you wrote this stuf, I mentioned that there are several US supremes ct decisions which basically repeat what I said here…

            They can’t ammend certain inalienable rights away, nor ammend entire or Parts of us const, in ways to render it of zero effect, or void of meaning etc…That is akin to say agree to UN treaty which makes entire const suservient to UN wishes etc…Or with other nations wishes…They cannot do such Rick..

                • Ok I rekon you was baiting all here to see whos paying atten eh…Hey! If my Grand Prize is my very Own mt. top lands of 100 or more acres?….I will split it with You rick so we can back each other while one sleeps etc ok!

                  The Only thing I ever really did win was once I sent in an entry for the NRA once per yr huge gun prizes thing.

                  They NRA sent me a confirmed winner letter and I had to go do a nics check as proof am legit etc…I got real excited since even the worst gun prize was aprox. 3-4 very nice and costly handguns+rifles combos!

                  But when I finally found out what I did win it was a Buck Hunting type knife and leather sheeth…

                  Still good though eh! All it cost me was a couple postage stamps to enter and verify nics status.

                  Can’t recall particular buck knife name?…Its real swell and today its aprox…$100 or more!

                  Never before nor since won a thing!…And man that knife is the sharpest I ever held or used…Litterally shaves hairs off back of hand with zero effort! Almost too sharp!

                  I bet its 3 times as sharp as shave razor is…Free is swell too!

                  Now perhaps I will win a nice Black Pirate flag for if it hits the proverbial wall, and is time to hoist black flags to begin slitting throats?…I am ready with my sharp buck hunter knife!!!

              If I may offer one correction to your excellent post.

              I understand what you meant by “Inalienable Rights” in reference to the U.S. Declaration of Independence. However, the word I think you’re looking for is “Unalienable”, not “Inalienable”. It is a very important distinction.

              An Inalienable right is a right which you possess that you can voluntarily give away. An Unalienable right is a right which you possess that you cannot voluntarily or involuntarily give away and it cannot be taken from you under any rule of law or by force.

              The authors of the Declaration of Independence chose the language very carefully in the off chance that future American I.Q.’s dropped precipitously and we foolishly attempted to trade our freedom for state run security. But that would never happen right Angelo? There’s no way Americans would ever, in a million years, be stupid enough to trade away their freedoms for security.

              It’s a good thing for us the Founders were forward thinking men and women.

        • Hey OQ, I just want to say thank you for writing “beyond collapse”, it has inspired me to think about more angles of SHTF and allowed me to begin filling loopholes in my prepping, thanks again and God bless.

          • Actually, I have you guys to thank! The whole thing started as a bunch of notes, then everyone here (and at a few other sites) started forcing me to think of a whole lot of other things, which in turn guided my own research and thoughts.

            Thanks to all of you, I’m a lot farther ahead preps-wise, skills-wise, and in outlook than I was a few years back, when I first noticed where the world is headed, and decided that I had better stop farting around and get serious about it. 🙂

            • OQ..Did you incluude advice to store some fresh Vinigar?…Only not for cooking or normal house cleaning..

              But rather incase for example, say some badguy perp did you or your child wrong real bad…And for whatever reasons perp escapes all forms justice(think OJ).

              So it comes down to You are 100% in the Rightous Justice frame of mind, and decide nothing less than “Cowboy” justice(also known as Frontire justice) is aprapo.

              If you used any firearm it will leave traces of powder etc which a Parifin test can detect as long as 12-24 hrs after the fact!

              So if you have Vinigar, it can be stored nearby say at a motel along the route home or back to??….Along with complete fresh clothes(unless you wore an updated version of cowboy attire, white lab chemo proof suit) and shoes.

              Then after you burned all clothes or chem bio suit to get rid of any “traces” in bathtub, and flushed ashes away, You can take a nice shower with Vinigar first and then normal soap to rid Your self/body/hair of all traces you fired any guns lately!

              Because even in shtf or any other justice seeking times you never know if cops will pull you over and before you realize it You are going for a powder trace parifin test as a potential perp….Vinigar ASAP Prior to cop stops you will be a lifesaver litterally!

              PS. Never as yet tried this out myself! let’s just say a unsavory character type guy I met before in detroit area told me it is what He always did….I do think vinigar works though…..

        • Just a note on the “cost of milk”. The economics of dairy farming has been so bad the past few years that many dairy farmers have been losing their shirt and their farms: or closing down after generations of dairy farming.

          The market needs to find equilibrium if there are going to be any dairy farms; or at least enough dairy farms to provide a stable supply.

Its better to have a job with benefits. I love farming but feel that until farm prices gets to where we can make enough to live and pay bills, let them starve.why should i get out in zero degree weather to feed the cows so that someone can have cheap food. we have not had a vacation in 20 years, drive 15 year old vehicles. The so called farm subsidities dont help most very much.I am sick of the so called cheap food for the masses when i cannot support my family on a 400 acre farm.Yes, I will defend what i have to the death if someone trys to take it.we have not prepped due to expense but our prep is still walking in the fields and barnyards..

          About 100 days ago I began a countdown to 12/21/2012. I stated in a comment here that I didn’t believe in an “end of days” scenario for that date, but rather a new starting point of a period of time whereby we as mankind have reached a turning point. The events I have documented over that 100 day period shows that the prophectic word is being unveiled at an alarming rate. The events are relevant, and very obvious to all those with eyes to see and ears to hear.

          The main point i want to make here is that mankind has become more greedy,jealous, and lovers of themselves. Not only around the neighborhood but around the world. People are blinded by their lust for money, things and control of people that they perceive to be a threat of them acquiring and keeping those things.
          In our extended family there are those that use this time of celebrating the birth and life of our Saviour and his love for His children; as a time to bicker, and bitch about others or banter about themselves and their “stuff”. Just look around and pay attention at how little compassion goes out to others.

          Thank God there are still good persons with character, and “realists” as to oppose the plans of the extreme leftists liberals.

                • John Q….the problem with your logic is that Reagan when first in office had a very big mess. The National Debt was about $1T as you say. But he also inherited interest rates that were around 14-22%. Reagan inherited unemployment of over 7%.

                  The interest alone until Reagan got it down added almost another $1T to our debt. So yes, when Reagan was done it did go up to $2.7T

                  But, you forget the economy was strong when he left. The US Dollar index was above 100 all thru Reagan years, and he is the only President for 8 years that can claim that.

                  Reagan era a simple investor like me could put money in a CD, savings, or any mutual fund and it grew.

                  Today, money is growing on trees and is bailing out central bankers to leave us hanging.

                I am not going to fall in line with John but there is some thing about Reagan that I think should be spot lighted. When he was the California Govenor he did do one thing that no one remembers.

                One of the big things he did to balance the budget and almost all other states followe suit was to close down all of the state insane asylums. Immediatly we had thousands of homeless, pan handling, non medicine taking physcos, wandering the street.

                • @ Lanny. I would say that they will try to ban any magazine period, and limit the amount of shells you can have in a shotgun, like they require plugs when hunting game birds. Revovlers probably will not be touched at first, but they will try to ban speed loaders for revolvers. They lawyer up, and they say that as long as people still have a single shot firearm that they are still allowing the 2nd. Amemdment to stay in place for people. The big problem with this is that it violates the civilian militia being properly ready ENOUGH to defend the country.

                  You are right it makes your skin crawl. It would probably be shocking to see all the deception that goes on. Like “planted information” that makes it appear like something is being hidden, and all the while hiding something that everybody’s attention has been driven away from. Kind of like drawing everybody’s focus on something in a magician’s show. While the audience is totally fixated on some lights or something else, the magician performs their trick. To someone not fooled into looking away from the magician, the trick is actually quite routine and dull.

                  Remaining focused and not taking the government BAIT is essential to finding out what is really happening.

            • We visited the Big Island for a week back in Oct. and the entire time we were there we saw just one cop. yet things were peaceful and the TSA guys at the airport were great. I guess they have the right attitude over there. Over here it seems like there is a cop every mile or so. Maybe because there are so many morons.

These socialists want an extremely-powerful central state…and my prediction is that we will see the beginning of a resolution to these inner-conflicts (freedom vs security) before 2020. We dropped in and visited them at their office in Gold Beach while on a trip to ride the Rogue in the Mail Boats. Interesting bunch of people with lots of prepping experience.

      5. As I read through this a thought occurred to me. The author of this article and other authors have well documented people’s behavior in the aftermath of events like hurricane Katrina. The looting, the scramble for food, water etc. Now we see a variation of that in the frantic moves to purchase firearms, larger capacity magazines, ammunition, and the rise in prices for these items. Clearly people should have been ready in order to avoid the current situation. We never know exactly what form the problems and shortages will take. But we can see once again the value of prepping. Must buy a couple of hams, .99/#…….

        • You’re right…a little late to be stocking up on guns and ammo.I was at Wal-mart the past two Fridays.I use 22LR to practice with, and a shot from my old Marlin 39A with a 24 inch barrel isn’t all bad either. Anyway, both Fridays they were out of value packs, this Friday they didn’t even have boxes of 50. And they were out of all the popular handgun calibers and 223/5.56 rifle.

          I’ve been adding inventory slowly for a long time now, just to avoid a rush like now.

            While in the local Wal-mart Christmas shopping a few days ago I checked out the sporting goods area and noticed that the only ammo on the shelf would be good for mice (.22 Short) and elephants (.458 Winchester). EVERYTHING else with the exception of a few boxes of birdshot shotgun shells was sold out.

          • Cleo, right with you. Been buying a brick (550) of .22 rounds a month for the last two years. Went in Walmart the other day and they don’t keep that large of box on hand any longer. The person in the sporting goods section couldn’t give me a reason why they don’t any longer.

            • I think it’s 375 rounds in a “brick” of .22s now. Like everything else to combat inflation the size of everything from cereal to toilet paper is dropping while price is maintaining.

              It’s all part of the continuing illusion.

This household gives trays of food to the various food banks, helps single parent households, and supply pet food & monetary resources to the local German Shepherd rescue group.         I read last eve a blog where a hurricane Sandy homeowner thanked a postal worker for bringing him a ham/cheese sandwich and coffee. Earlier that day the postal worker asked the homeowner when the last time that homeowner ate anything. The reply was “Two days.” Damn!, I was amazed that the homeowner did not have a few weeks of soup and drinking water YET apparently owned a computer and internet access. Uh, something wrong here???

        When I was a kid nearly everyone on our rural route stored and canned produce for the coming winter. Now people ASSUME the long supply chain will ALWAYS be in place. Jeez, now THAT reasoning is what I call being a dumb shit !

        Most intelligent people carry a spare tire in their vehicle, extra emergency $20.00 folded in their wallet, extra rain gear in their car, an old coat+boots+gloves+shovel for winter. Then I have distant, and not so aware, relatives that laugh at my precautions only to suffer near death walking to a safe place after their car is disabled in a snowstorm. I cannot help those who REFUSE to help themselves.

        Keep in mind 20% of the population are die hard libs and also a minimum 20% of the population are on pharmaceuticals to cope with reality, well need I say more.

        I must point out that the Federal Government DID have radio ads for September Preparedness Month, …WOW dingbat prep haters…you know what that means !

        • I received this in an email a few years ago. It is one of my favorite Christmas stories. It reminds me of my Dad, who was tough on us kids growing up, but had a kind heart and was fair. I have found out only in later years of the many people my Dad helped.

          Hope you enjoy it.

          Christmas 1881

          Pa never had much compassion for the lazy or those who squandered their means and then never had enough for the necessities. But for those who were genuinely in need, his heart was as big as all outdoors. It was from him that I learned the greatest joy in life comes from giving, not from receiving.

          It was Christmas Eve 1881. I was fifteen years old and feeling like the world had caved in on me because there just hadn’t been enough money to buy me the rifle that I’d wanted for Christmas. We did the chores early that night for some reason. I just figured Pa wanted a little extra time so we could read in the Bible.

          After supper was over I took my boots off and stretched out in front of the fireplace and waited for Pa to get down the old Bible. I was still feeling sorry for myself and, to be honest, I wasn’t in much of a mood to read Scriptures. But Pa didn’t get the Bible; instead he bundled up again and went outside. I couldn’t figure it out because we had already done all the chores. I didn’t worry about it long though; I was too busy wallowing in self-pity.

          Soon Pa came back in. It was a cold clear night out and there was ice in his beard. “Come on, Matt,” he said. “Bundle up good, it’s cold out tonight.” I was really upset then. Not only wasn’t I getting the rifle for Christmas, now Pa was dragging me out in the cold, and for no earthly reason that I could see. We’d already done all the chores, and I couldn’t think of anything else that needed doing, especially not on a night like this.

          But I knew Pa was not very patient at one dragging one’s feet when he’d told them to do something, so I got up and put my boots back on and got my cap, coat, and mittens. Ma gave me a mysterious smile as I opened the door to leave the house. Something was up, but I didn’t know what.

          Outside, I became even more dismayed. There in front of the house was the work team, already hitched to the big sled. Whatever it was we were going to do wasn’t going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell. We never hitched up this sled unless we were going to haul a big load.

          Pa was already up on the seat, reins in hand. I reluctantly climbed up beside him. The cold was already biting at me. I wasn’t happy. When I was on, Pa pulled the sled around the house and stopped in front of the woodshed. He got off and I followed. “I think we’ll put on the high sideboards,” he said. “Here, help me.” The high sideboards! It had been a bigger job than I wanted to do with just the low sideboards on, but whatever it was we were going to do would be a lot bigger with the high sideboards on.

          After we had exchanged the sideboards, Pa went into the woodshed and came out with an armload of wood—the wood I’d spent all summer hauling down from the mountain, and then all fall sawing into blocks and splitting. What was he doing? Finally I said something. “Pa,” I asked, “what are you doing?” You been by the Widow Jensen’s lately?” he asked. The Widow Jensen lived about two miles down the road. Her husband had died a year or so before and left her with three children, the oldest being eight. Sure, I’d been by, but so what? “Yeah,” I said, “Why?” “I rode by just today,” Pa said. “Little Jakey was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. They’re out of wood, Matt.”

          That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the woodshed for another armload of wood. I followed him. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder if the horses would be able to pull it. Finally, Pa called a halt to our loading, then we went to the smoke house and Pa took down a big ham and a side of bacon. He handed them to me and told me to put them in the sled and wait.

          When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand. “What’s in the little sack?” I asked. “Shoes. They’re out of shoes. Little Jakey just had gunnysacks wrapped around his feet when he was out in the woodpile this morning. I got the children a little candy too. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a little candy.”

          We rode the two miles to Widow Jensen’s pretty much in silence. I tried to think through what Pa was doing. We didn’t have much by worldly standards. Of course, we did have a big woodpile, though most of what was left now was still in the form of logs that I would have to saw into blocks and split before we could use it. We also had meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we didn’t have any money, so why was Pa buying them shoes and candy?

          Really, why was he doing any of this? Widow Jensen had closer neighbors than us; it shouldn’t have been our concern. We came in from the blind side of the Jensen house and unloaded the wood as quietly as possible, and then we took the meat and flour and shoes to the door. We knocked. The door opened a crack and a timid voice said, “Who is it?” “Lucas Miles, Ma’am, and my son, Matt. Could we come in for a bit?”

          Widow Jensen opened the door and let us in. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The children were wrapped in another and were sitting in front of the fireplace by a very small fire that hardly gave off any heat at all. Widow Jensen fumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp. “We brought you a few things, Ma’am,” Pa said and set down the sack of flour. I put the meat on the table. Then Pa handed her the sack that had the shoes in it.

          She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes out one pair at a time. There was a pair for her and one for each of the children—sturdy shoes, the best, shoes that would last. I watched her carefully. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks. She looked up at Pa like she wanted to say something, but it wouldn’t come out.

          “We brought a load of wood too, Ma’am,” Pa said. He turned to me and said, “Matt, go bring in enough to last awhile. Let’s get that fire up to size and heat this place up.” I wasn’t the same person when I went back out to bring in the wood. I had a big lump in my throat and as much as I hate to admit it, there were tears in my eyes too.

          In my mind I kept seeing those three kids huddled around the fireplace and their mother standing there with tears running down her cheeks with so much gratitude in her heart that she couldn’t speak. My heart swelled within me and a joy that I’d never known before, filled my soul. I had given at Christmas many times before, but never when it had made so much difference. I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people.

          I soon had the fire blazing and everyone’s spirits soared. The kids started giggling when Pa handed them each a piece of candy and Widow Jensen looked on with a smile that probably hadn’t crossed her face for a long time. She finally turned to us. “God bless you,” she said. “I know the Lord has sent you. The children and I have been praying that he would send one of his angels to spare us.”

          In spite of myself, the lump returned to my throat and the tears welled up in my eyes again. I’d never thought of Pa in those exact terms before, but after Widow Jensen mentioned it I could see that it was probably true. I was sure that a better man than Pa had never walked the earth. I started remembering all the times he had gone out of his way for Ma and me, and many others. The list seemed endless as I thought on it.

          Pa insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left. I was amazed when they all fit and I wondered how he had known what sizes to get. Then I guessed that if he was on an errand for the Lord that the Lord would make sure he got the right sizes.

          Tears were running down Widow Jensen’s face again when we stood up to leave. Pa took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug. They clung to him and didn’t want us to go. I could see that they missed their Pa, and I was glad that I still had mine.

          At the door Pa turned to Widow Jensen and said, “The Mrs. wanted me to invite you and the children over for Christmas dinner tomorrow. The turkey will be more than the three of us can eat, and a man can get cantankerous if he has to eat turkey for too many meals. We’ll be by to get you about eleven. It’ll be nice to have some little ones around again. Matt, here, hasn’t been little for quite a spell.” I was the youngest. My two brothers and two sisters had all married and had moved away. Widow Jensen nodded and said, “Thank you, Brother Miles. I don’t have to say, “‘May the Lord bless you,’ I know for certain that He will.”

          Out on the sled I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn’t even notice the cold. When we had gone a ways, Pa turned to me and said, “Matt, I want you to know something. Your ma and me have been tucking a little money away here and there all year so we could buy that rifle for you, but we didn’t have quite enough.

          Then yesterday a man who owed me a little money from years back came by to make things square. Your ma and me were real excited, thinking that now we could get you that rifle, and I started into town this morning to do just that. But on the way I saw little Jakey out scratching in the woodpile with his feet wrapped in those gunnysacks and I knew what I had to do. Son, I spent the money for shoes and a little candy for those children. I hope you understand.”

          I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again. I understood very well, and I was so glad Pa had done it. Now the rifle seemed very low on my list of priorities. Pa had given me a lot more. He had given me the look on Widow Jensen’s face and the radiant smiles of her three children.

          For the rest of my life, whenever I saw any of the Jensens, or split a block of wood, I remembered, and remembering brought back that same joy I felt riding home beside Pa that night. Pa had given me much more than a rifle that night; he had given me the best Christmas of my life.

          Just In Time supply lines are efficient as long as everything works the way that it is supposed to work. They are not good at handling disruptions, though, and will fall apart like a $2 suitcase the moment they are put under any real stress at all.       7. Daisy, thanks for this important article. I think it’s fair to say that every serious prepper has faced ridicule to one degree or another. Sometimes it comes in the form of name-calling such as “paranoid Chicken Little”. While I have experienced a lot of that, I also have experienced some friends admitting it makes sense to prepare and they have reached out for help, which I am obviously happy to provide. I wish it could happen far more than it does.

        I wanted to point out something that, if you’re not already familiar with it, you should be. Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is relevant to your discussion above. Without getting too deep into it, at the bottom of the pyramid is the need to survive, and when a person feels their very survival is threatened, basically all civility, morality, and decency is thrown out the window. When the totally unprepared come to the realization “it’s either Prepper or me; one us has to die so the other can live”, well, that’s a conclusion that we preppers need to be ready for.

        Not only have many people failed to prepare in any meaningful way, but the same mindset prevents them from thinking through the natural consequences of an economic or societal collapse. Because there are far more DGI’s (those who don’t get it) than preppers, we will always be a target.

      8. I have no sympathy for people who call me crazy for storing a months supply of food and water. There will be some dropped jaws and wide eyes come the collapse. People will erupt into chaos. I would love nothing more than to print out screenshots of all the ridiculing comments and tape them to my property come the collapse. Anyone coming to my front door will read them and I hope they look down in shame.

      9. We’re not “preppers” we’re all our own “personal insurance agents”.

        The clear definition of a hypocrite is someone who has health insurance, car insurance, homeowners insurance, a savings account, 401k, etc. yet still does not stock up on extra food and water.

        As Sandy and Katrina both showed us, everything you have can be wiped out in an instant if you’re not prepared.

        It’s all about insurance. Insuring the health and well-being of yourself and your family.
        If you don’t choose to buy an umbrella then that’s fine…Just don’t complain when it rains or try to prevent others from carrying an umbrella and staying dry.
        Just remember that eventually it probably is going to rain and you will get wet.

        Likewise, if you don’t choose to own a gun then that’s fine as well…Just don’t complain when you have no way to protect yourself or your loved ones and don’t try to prevent others from owning or carrying a gun and staying safe.
        Again, just remember that eventually it probably is going to rain and you will get wet…metaphorically 😉

          I had a direct example of this several years ago. A new neighbor moved in next door to us and we spoke with each other several times during the first couple of days that she was there. One evening, she came running to our house, saying that she thought that she heard someone in her house. I went over there with Mr. MagLite and Mr. Smith & Wesson. I carefully searched the whole house but did not find any problems. I assured her that there was no one there but that if she did hear anything else to call me right away. The funny part of all this is that she was a card-carrying leftist and rabidly anti-gun. Thinking that her life might be on the line seemed to have clarified her thoughts on the matter a bit. 😉

      10. The Fear Monger of Christmas Past (TFMOCP)

        When the fear monger of Christmas past took me for my review of the past I found myself looking at England. Through the 80’s. It was indeed a wondrous time! I was in my teens, and full of beans!

        My family was poor. I was finishing school with not much prospect of a job. Thatcher had just taken over as PM,and employment was rampant. In my families circle of friends, no-one was doing particularly well.Over time Thatcher did battle with the Unions, broke the coal industry (and others) – and through ‘Reganomics’ things gradually got better.

        From someone who ‘experienced’ it through the Lamestream media of the day, it appeared to me that Thatcher did a good job.. and that ‘Conservatism’ was the way to vote when I was old enough. The internet was only a thing for a few scientists at the time – and so alternative news was not available to me in my small corner of paradise. To others, Thatcher represented the devil – and she had as many ‘haters’ as she did ‘supporters’. The thing I recall most is that whether you liked or hated her decision(s) – she rarely changed direction based on popular opinion.

        I was shown the ‘fun’ I had with the simple things in life. I was lucky enough to live on the back of what I thought was a ‘huge’ woods. Based on my knowledge today, I would say it was only 20 acres. In that small woods myself and friends spend countless hours building a lifelong friendship, hunting squirell, rabbit and wood pigeon. The joy we had from our pellet guns is unmatched – even with the modern day hunting Items I have.

        I managed to get a job, we had fun at countless pubs.. chasing girls.. and tuning my very first car – a 6 year old Ford Capri! Life just couldn’t possibly be any better. Family, friends and simple fun.

        When I looked around me, there were some things I ‘couldn’t’ believe. ‘Shell Suits’ seemed to be in fashion… for god-knows ‘why’ – as people looked atrocious in them! Worse still, fat people seemed to want to slide into them making them look like stuffed sausages! TV and radio had its fair share of Kardashians to follow if so inclined. People walked around looking like idiots with Sony Walkmans – just like most people today when they walk down the street looking at their latest Apple product… and not where they are walking.

        As idyllic as this seemed – they were dark times. Jobs were scarce. Crime was up. Many of the people I knew made a living out of either crime or the barter system. It was the way some people survived. Greenpeace was prevalent on the TV – there was a spectre of very real nuclear war – this was still the cold war with Russia (should any forget).

        As 16 year old’s, we did ‘build’ an underground shelter in the 20 acre woods! It lasted 2 weeks until someone found it and all was lost. Britain went to ‘war’ with Argentina, and there was a feeling that conscription would be occurring. As a now 17 year old, coming up to 18 this was a topic on mine and my friends lips.

        If the internet was available then to the public, I am sure the ‘hype’ around economy, crime, nuclear war, people ‘selling’ fear would have been just as it is today. As it turns out, the world turned and somehow we are all still here today.

        The Fear Monger of Christmas Present

        Ahh…put your heads between your knee’s and kiss your ass good bye! We are indeed all doomed! Economy worldwide, personal debt, food shortages, climate change, government control, fiat money, solar flares… and many others. Take your pick.

        The fear monger of Christmas present showed me a video of Barack Obama entitled “The Obama Deception”. It made me very afraid. It confirmed my worst nightmares. I became consumed with worry. What is a person to do with all that is in front of him/her?

        The Fear Monger of Christmas Present showed me my recent hunting and fishing trips this Autumn…hobbies that have stayed with me since my teens, and moving to Canada. Ahh… they were epic!! Simple fun with my rods and Browning Xbolt .243 I consider myself lucky to live in Canada with all that is here.

        I lived through the gun grab in the UK, so the ‘hoops’ I had to go through to obtain my hunting weapons here was but nothing. I would go through more if required. I was reminded of the fun my friends and I had on our recent trips… the comraderie that we shared.. I would not pass any of this up for the world.

        I am lucky enough to have a fantastic employer…many friends.. and a girlfriend that also likes fishing! Life is indeed good.

        I don’t understand much of today’s society. It is almost as if some people live on a different planet I swear to god. The fanaticism of phones.. Facebook.. and Twitter has been taken to heights I cannot fathom. Kids sitting at a school lunch table texting each other rather than talking? A teenager on a date with a good looking girl paying more attention to his phone?? Really??

        The reality shows and general crap that is shown on TV has made me get rid of Cable 7 years ago. I still watch Jay Leno round the girlfriends..its one vice I don’t seem to be able to shake 🙂 The Kardashians, Honey BooBoo, Lindsay… the list goes on.

        Then there is the consumerism… the new cars… the Chinese ‘stuff’.. whatever happened to simple fun? Its no wonder some people ‘crave’ some sort of ‘reset’.

        Regardless… the fears today are arguably the same as they were in the 80’s… I think just more visible due to modern day availability of information and mis-information.

        Even the Mayans get things wrong 🙂 I guess we now label the 21st of Dec 2012 as a ‘reset’ day … and not the ‘End of the World’. Lets all watch some more ‘Dancing with the stars’ until the next doomsday date surfaces and worry about that…

        Fear Monger of Christmas Future.

        The Fear Monger of Christmas Future showed me a world that is indeed in Fear. People scared of police states, wars, earthquakes, dried up farmers fields and where the next paycheck is coming from to watch the 21st season of “Bachelorete”

        I also saw some future fishing trips, parties, and get together with Friends that looked too much fun to miss. I am looking forward to them immensely

        Conclusion.

        The world continues past December 21st. It will continue on regardless of our neurotic state(s) of mind that come up on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

        When I see videos, like the BO Deception, I get worried. It is indeed very convincing. I always try to put on my ‘opposite’ hat and try to see if there are ‘other’ interpretations. Is Alex Jones just trying to peddle fear to make money? Is he employed by ‘someone’ to discredit whatever the topic is within the video? Something else I cant quite grasp??

        When I see programs on a topic like Nostradamous, I remind myself that anything can look like anything if you try and connect the dots. Conspiracy theories are many… and we have to try and fathom for our own selves what is real and what is making us simply ‘scared’.

        At this time of year, I am reminded that the simple things in life have truly made me happy. My friends, my simple hobbies, my loved ones. I plan on concentrating on that a whole lot more this coming year.

        I am ‘somewhat prepped’ – I would label it 70%, and have determined that will be good enough for me. For me, Now is the time to get on and live life – or look back in disappointment.

        Today, the day before Christmas, the news is that 4 firemen were shot when responding to a fire in upstate NY. Two died.

        This comes on the heels of the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary school where 20 children and 6 adults were killed.

        The news also has Sen Dianne Feinstien promising to introduce gun control legislation in January to ban so-called “assault-weapons”. Sen Feinstein has to be the star hypocrit-elitest of the late 20th and early 21st century. Since the Harvy Milk shooting in the 60’s she has packed heat while she campaigns to disarm americans.

        Which reminds me. The San Jose Mercury news back in the 80’s, I think, linked the CIA to importing AK-47’s from China and distributing them to drug gangs on the west coast. Did any heads roll for that. No!

        And of course you have the gun running fiasco where the Justice Department channelled almost 2000 weapons to Mexican drug cartels and resulted in an American border patrol officer being killed and who knows how many other innocent victems both north and south of the border.
        The Justice Department was not created 200 years ago at the founding of our country. My understanding is that it was created by president Calvin Coolidge because he was so disgusted by the corruption in Washington, DC. A very noble act. However, the Justice Department has now become an enforcement arm of the executive branch to squelch dissent from administration policy. The DOJ needs to be moved under the Judiciary Branch.

        Well, I’m very reassured by reports that NORAD is tracking Santa Claus’s arrival.
        Given NORAD’s track record of defending us on 9/11/2001 I can only hope that he’s carrying presents and not WMD.

        1. Do you own auto, health, homeowner’s, or life insurance to protect you and your possessions?

        2. When you buy an expensive piece of electronic equipment do you spend the extra $10 or whatever it is for the store’s product protection program?

        3. When you go to a concert do you purchase your tickets in advance or do you take your chances at the door hoping the show is not sold out?

        4. If your car’s gas tank is on “empty” do you fill it up before driving a long distance or do you just assume that your car will make it to your destination whether you have fuel or not?

        5. When you’re at work do you actually do your job or do you assume that your employer will continue employing and paying you to stand there and do nothing?

        6. Did you ever spend your money buying a lottery ticket yet hope that you WON’T win?

        7. Do you buy toilet paper for your house or do you assume that you don’t need it because you’ll never have to poop.

        8. If you’re lying in bed one night and someone breaks into your house will you sit idly by and allow them to rob, rape, or murder you or your family members?

        All of these questions more or less help illustrate the reasons why EVERYONE needs to prepare in different ways in every situation throughout our entire lives.
        Every choice we make in life affects the outcome of our lives no matter whether that outcome occurs in the present or the future. If you want a happy stress-free life you need to make the right decisions in the present and you also need to prepare for the worst in the future so that when the future becomes the present you can continue living a happt stress-free life.

        • Err, on #2? I don’t. Most manufactured items already have a 1 to 3 year warranty (some are longer), and you can deal with the manufacturer to get it put right if it breaks.

          Anything after the warranty, and I replace, because by then, it’ll be obsolete, or beyond any hope of repair.

          90% of the time, the item works for years beyond the warranty anyway (I still have an ancient Apple PowerMac that hasn’t been under warranty since 2004, but it still runs just fine nowadays when I occasionally start it up).

          Long story short, the “extended warranty” that most stores offer is a ripoff. 🙂

A daughter and her boyfriend who are avid hunters and shooters but not the least concerned with having extra food, water, medical supplies. Another daughter who has minor interest in firearms, no supplies, is a teacher in a major US city, and has had a 9 year old threaten to bring in a 9mm, shoot her and then “stomp her brains all over the floor’. I would only add.. according to many different experts from various fields, around 2030, there will be a convergence of crises (population spike, water shortages, climate hell, economic problems, peak oil crises, etc) which will make life almost impossible. When you think about it, 2030 is not that far away!!

        • The exact date to watch out for is January 19, 2038. Most 32-bit Unix computers will have a problem. In Unix, the time variable is a 32-bit number, counting the seconds since 1970. In 2038, the reported date will switch to 1901 and date calculations will be incorrect. Programs calculating future dates will act up before 2038.

          Before anyone says Y2K didn’t cause any problems, I can say from personal experience that there were programs that absolutely would have failed on January 1, 2000. I had to totally rewrite a major piece of software for a law firm. The dates were stored as two ASCII characters.

          A lot of personal computers were replaced in 1999. I saw countless web pages for years after 1-1-2000 that had an incorrect revision date at the bottom. Since year 99 was gone, they had the year as 100 or 19100.

          The big unknown was the problem of millions of embedded processors which were not being replaced, some because they were inaccessible. It turns out that most of them kept working, but some failed. There was an automobile factory that was being shut down. They did an experiment where the computer people changed the dates on the computers to December 31, 1999 and then waited for the date to change. When 1-1-2000 arrived, the entire factory came to a halt, all the computers, all the conveyors, and all the robots. This was just one test out of many that were reported on the internet. Our lamestream media downplayed the problems and did not report most of them.

          So if you are using Unix, go to 64-bit.

        • Many things may become necessary. If we spend ourselves testing them all, will we still be able to do what truly needs to be done when the time comes? Perhaps.

          Rather than staying awake all night, have a couple of dogs around, one in and one out of the house. They will let you know when it is time to awaken and greet any middle of the night visitors.

We have chosen to do this to protect ourselves, our families, and our close friends. Unlike libs, we KNOW that we can’t afford to provide everything for everyone, so will not be exhausting ourselves in that doomed to fail effort. We do what we can and encourage others to do the same. If they choose to join us, that is great. If not, then they can just live with the consequences of having chosen poorly.

            As to using old tech, sure, no problem. A VERY effective hunting tool is a good bow and arrows. Not that I want to HAVE to use them because I have nothing better but they make a fine addition to a small armory. Unlike black powder arms, a bow works just fine, even when wet. 😉

It’s funny how so many non-preppers chide preppers for “stockpiling” weapons and ammunition, but they’re so quick to wish harm on those who choose to prepare! They’re too dense to realize that they just justified the reason to store weapons and ammunition.

        But I agree, I think fear is the driving factor, because the responses are so quickly and instantly hateful, and if you attempt to have a reasonable, factual conversation, they refuse to listen and then they just resort to painting you as crazy, which is their only defense – as I’ve said a thousand times, easier to discredit the messenger than the message.

They literally cannot stand the idea of their well ordered little world collapsing and admitting that their world is in danger of doing just that would be necessary if they were to prep. They can ignore all the problems that we see clearly and hope that they will “just go away” if they do not prep. When they see or read about someone else prepping, it just brings the whole collapse scenario back into their heads and causes them real pain. This is why they last out at preppers.         • Suburbia will be a death-trap. The “subdivisions” I see have extremely limited egress routes. They are under-defended. The homes are built with low-quality materials. The soil is usually of low-quality, which is why homes were built there. The owners all planted grass instead of building up their soil. These neighborhoods generally are not gated, and therefore do not have a layered defense. And (generalizing) suburbia is full of unhealthy people who don’t workout, have no training in self-defense, and would have no idea what to do in an emergency. In short, they are totally screwed. They probably actually think the government is going to…help them…good lord.

She has the best intentions in the world when she submits articles like these. her efforts are not totally in vain. more people have awakened and now “get it” since the 2008 economic crisis. There are more preppers now than there were 4 years ago, so articles like Daisy’s are doing a certain amount of good; how much is hard to say. While it’s possible some preppers might get killled over their supplies in the intial phase of post-SHTF, the dickheads who refused to prep are going to be dying off a helluva lot faster and in numbers that will stagger the human mind. I estimate at least 50% of the nonpreppers will be dead in the first 3 months of post-SHTF. So just back off from Daisy; just let her do her thing. Daisy, you go, girl. keep up the outstanding work.       54. I agree with Z. The amount of fear in the commentaries is palpable. They are afraid and preppers make them more fearful. They feel helpless and much of that helplessness comes from their government sponsored education.

        When TSHF they will turn on the preppers, identify them as “the other” that caused the problem and seek to confiscate the supplies. Look at other societies that have been through the same problems. In each case, the government identified another group to blame for the problems then stole from them.

        It looks like the government is set to label preppers as domestic terrorists. The police state comes in and gets the supplies, most of which go to their cronies and the sheeple watch on tv and say “all those crazies need to be locked away”

      57. Since we are trying to prepare for what we see as some possible serious economic times, I had a question about solar energy.

        I have been looking at a solar energy system that entails solar panels, rechargeable battery, and a power inverter.

        My main goal is for cooking, boiling water, listen to radio, and other small time stuff that wont quickly drain the battery. I dont want the bigger stuff because of cost and I dont want to run the battery down in just one hour after each recharge.

        The systems I have been looking at are between 75-100 watt solar panels. Is that enough?

          Cooking? Resistive load (heat and power) requires a lot of energy. A small pump of .5 HP is roughly 373 watts. Just bringing up a gallon of water from 50 deg to 212 and not even holding it for any time would be about 400 watts (390 actually). Leave the heat for fire. Get a camping refrigerator that runs off propane and save the “juice” for those necessities that only electricity can do like a well pump. A wind up radio is a good investment.

          Energy 101

          1000 watts = 1 kilo watt= 1 kw= 10 100 watt lightbulbs= 3413 BTUs

          1 gallon of water = 8.33 lbs

          1 BTU raises 1 lb of water 1 degree fahrenheit

          Water at 50 degrees to 212 degrees= 212-50= 162 btus/lb x 8.33 lbs= 1,350 btus.

          1350/3413= .39 or 39% of a kw or 390 watts.

            Thanks much. Does the 12v rechargeable battery help. All I am looking for is small time cooking with such things as soups. No oven type stuff, but the smaller burner type stuff.

            Even though I live in a large Ag area, neighbors just dont care and dont believe in an economic collapse. So I really dont want a fire as it attracks folks, just like noisy generators. Not being stingy, but I have been talking of this stuff to friends and neighbors and some are prepared well and many not even caring. The fire is good if neighbors cooperate, but if it turns to civil unrest, then you need to be quiet.

            Where I live in Idaho is a good area. Good people. Lots of guns. Lots of potatoes. Lots of grain. And an LDS crowd that believes in preparation.

            I am looking into solar energy as a system to use but not to rely totally on. Thanks for your info. Sounds like I have more homework to do.

              If you need heat use fire. Electric is not the way to go. Get a camping stove. The power drawl is way too high to generate heat from electric.

              Save the electricity for those things that only electricity can do.

          • If you have to melt ice it gets even more energy intensive with over eighty times the energy required to go the one degree from solid@32 to 33 degrees versus from forty to forty one degrees or any other temperature up to boiling. It takes a thousand times the energy per quantity of water to get water to convert to the gaseous state(steam) from liquid.

Hate to be a bearer of bad news on Christmas Eve, but they had another earthquake on the Macquarie Islands, this means that 70% of a good size earthquake is up to 75% or more depending on what I find when I have the time to look this over from past records. I have been so irritated by these anti-self defense extremeists trying to take away our protection that I have been letting this forecasting of earthquakes slip. This one was a 5.0 and does indicate something big building within a couple of weeks. I hope I have time to give a forecast by tonight, I will try as there are many people that could need this if their area is the next target zone.

        • Why would an earthquake be bad news? It was thousands of miles away and anyway over a thousand earthquakes occur every day. Unless you live in Ca. why worry? You have more of a chance of getting hit by a car.

          • @ John W. An earthquake that kills and/or injuries and destroys property is bad news, especially for the people that it affects. There are many places around the world to worry about earthquakes. It is not just california, it is Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and British Columbia from the northwest. Those people certainly matter. What about the people in Utah sitting under the Wasatch Mountain faults? How about the people affected by the New Madrid fault. How about all the people that will have to deal with the tsunami from when the Caribbean plate breaks, like Y’all Beware in South Carolina, and especially those in Florida?

            You do have a better chance of being in a car accident, not of being hit by a car. Why? Because WHEN a major fault breaks it affects millions, or tens of millions and all of a sudden it is an one in 100 chance up to a one in 5 or 6 chance of being affected by a major fault going off. Besides this, wouldn’t you feel bad if one of those people that you communicate with on this site was severely injuried or killed in an earthquake? Don’t you want to know when an earthquake is possibly coming, like that 6.4 that was forecasted before it happened last week of the coast of San Diego, to your area so you can be a little more ready? You matter just like everybody else out there.

        You know, for a while there I felt really sorry for the masses. But, they are so very willing to follow the mainstream like sheep that I just can’t feel sorry for them anymore. I am seeing the commonality, now, between the anti-gun public and the anti-prepper public. Couple this with the anti-thinking public (that just cannot bear to think about the inconsistencies in the Sandy Hook Massacre and that it could be something other than what it seems) and you have a pliable body of minions that can be steered in just about any direction you wish. Our federal government and the criminal bastard psychopaths that control them must be proud. Hehe. The fact that they have lost control and their staged massacres no longer create the type of panic they wish to create has got to have them in a panic themselves.

        They want us to run to them for solutions, but they are seeing an ever increasing resistance to their steering. The last few shootings have caused ammo shelves and gun racks to clear, not a flurry of letter writing or begging government to come up with a solution (or, delusion, as it were). While the majority of Americans are in the sheople class, they are quickly relizing that something isn’t just right.

        Government is not the answer. Government is the problem. They keep creating problems and try to frame guns, medicated kids, etc, but in reality there is only one problem: government.

        Government, after all, IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING that has ever been created by man. Nothing in history has destroyed more, murdered more, stolen more, raped more or poisoned more than government. Nothing. Though, there are those that say religion runs a close second, however, I would remind them that in those cases it was “teamed” with government of WAS government.

        The secret they do not want you to know is that you are sovereign from birth and they are criminals for violating that sovereignty. For that, they will burn in type of hell they have created for themselves. That hell is beginning to develop as they eat each other at the top.

        More massacres to come. But, just realize, they are staged just like the one at Sandy Hook. Your perception of Sandy Hook is being managed just like they are attempting to manage the perception of preppers.

        I will be glad when it all falls apart. I think it is the lies that bother me the most.

I find myself questioning if what I do might be breaking a “law” and whether I should be doing it or not.I sometimes have to smack myself along side the face and realize that it is me versus the state.       61. Okay I did this as fast as possible to give everybody a look at what is happening. There have been in the past 40 years 24 sequences of earthquakes of 5.0+ within a degree or so of the recent 5.0 in Macquarie Islands. 19 out of 24 times (79.2%) 6.5+ has occurred within 15 days. Most have been 6.7-7.3, sometimes mutiple places were hit. Here are the locations that have been hit and can be expected to be hit again.

        – Soloman Islands and Papua New Guinea 8 times
        – Chile or Southern Peru 5 times
        – Indonesia 3 times
        – Japan 3 times
        – South Sandwich Islands 2 times, then big earthquakes hit after this polar region had a large earthquake
        – Kermadec Islands, Mariana Islands, Easter Island, Mexico, Greenland area, Indian Ocean, Kuril Islands, Vanuatu, and Kiribati all once.

        I would put a big bull’s eye on the Soloman Islands and Papua New Guinea for a high 6 to low 7 range.

        Chile and Peru I would say has a good chance of a low 7 to high 7 range.

        Japan if it gets hits should be in the mid 7 to low 8 range.

        Other locations I would say would have to tie in with the previous earthquakes that were likely to bring a 70% chance on the Dec. 22 post. This included most of the locations given above, but also california and the Black Sea region.

        By the way the 4.9 on the southern Mid Atlantic Ridge was directed right at Peru by using the western movement of the South American plate using the curvature of the planet. The volcanic activity in South America is the results of what is happening with the plates right now. The time frame for these precursor earthquakes is until Jan.8. 85% chance of a 6.5+ in one of these locations mentioned, still about a 70% chance for a 7+.

        Percentages based on the already established 80% chance of today’s earthquake, plus the earthquake on Saturday and the earthquake on the Mid Atlantic Ridge just about a couple of hours ago.

Why is a foreigner so obsessed with everyone having their guns taken away, it is not their country? A nice trip to Guantanamo Bay for piers to be throughly interrogated MIGHT make him think differently about his personal crusade in disarming America.

The masse, with few exceptions, will never come out of the twilight zone. Even in the intial phase of post-SHTF, they’ll still cling to the illusion that Uncle Scam will still come and save their bacon; ain’t happening, in my lifetime or yours and we all know it. plus, you’re right about them receiving a strong delusion; hell, that’s already been happening for decades and especially now. My first contct with anything you could call prepping was when i was only 5 years old. In October, 1962, my older brother helped our dad build a bomb shelter in our basement because of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I still remember that like it was yesterday and it left a lasting impression on me. That was back in the good old days when we had civil defense programs and there were public shelters everywhere. The US government actually encouraged everyone in those days to be prepared for anything that could happen. Now everything has turned 180 degrees. if you prep for anything these days, you’re labeled a terrorist by DHS. Pardon my French,BUT SCREW DHS OR ANY OTHER FED AGENCY WHO LABELS US AS TERRORISTS FOR EVEN THE MOST MUNDANE OF NORMAL EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES! There’s nothing legitimate about government anymore. I don’t recognize anything they say about anything as legitimate and refuse to accept it or be bound by it. let any nonpreppers come to my place to try and take anything from me and I’ll ruin their day permanently. When I lived in Florida, I prepared for and survived several hurricanes; came out smelling like a rose every time. After coming back to Tennessee in 1982, I moved into a mobile home. Only 3 months later, the mobile home caught on fire and made me homeless. I had my own personal SHTF. Fortunately, not all my possessions were in that trailer at the time, so it didn’t take too much for me to start over and i had another home in only 2 days. I am a survivor. I was a prepper before the word was even invented. My prepping is in overdrive now thanks to the anti-selfdefense turds and the demonization we’re getting in the MSM. I could have been a lot worse toward Ron Martin earlier, but I wasn’t about to let the attack on Daisy go unanswered; I think she’s great. Merry Christmas to everyone here.         • I’ve always prepped. My father is a farmer that has always shunned the federal programs. As such, its hard to make much of a living farming. But! The nice thing about farming is that you’re basically producing more food than you can eat and selling it. As such, we always had all the beef we wanted. During the winter of 197?, we lost power for 8 days. Dad and I carried the freezer outside. It was -25 and we ate steak and chops all week.

          We ran the generator for 2 hours in the morning to run the furnace. We had the thermostats in the house set to 78 and at 6am the lights came on and the furnace roared to life. At 7am we’d all take a very brief shower after the water heaters were warmed up. During this time the house would be warming up absorbing heat. We’d run around like it was summer. We put heavy blankets over all the doors and windows except for a couple so we could see and the back door so we could get in and out.

          Dad and I still had cattle to feed and wood to cut. It was so cold that we wore thermal underwear. I actually wore them under my pajamas because it was in the lower 50s by the time morning came around.

          We burnt wood in the fireplace and roasted marshmallows and hot dogs. Mom made hobo stew a couple times over the fire, but mostly she used an two burner coleman stove to cook with.

          Frankly, we could have gone on forever as long as we could get a gallon of gas per day and 2 gallon of heating oil.

          I never forgot that experience. Frankly, it was more fun than I could ever express in words. It changed me inside, somehow. Now, as I set and relive it in my mind, I just realized that that 8 day experience is what made me a prepper. The extra food mom and dad kept on the shelves and in the freezer gave us a buffer until life returned to normal. Problem is, I think it may not return to normal for years once the breakdown occurs. So, I’m not prepping for 8 days of no power, I’m prepping for 8 years.

          Oh, by the way, during the 8 day adventure, Dad and I drove the dump truck loaded with a few ton of wood, into town to try and get some milk. You know those ads that show shelves empty. Guess what? I HAVE SEEN THOSE SHELVES FIRST HAND! They had power in town but the store was out of EVERYTHING.

          As a 12 or 13 year old kid, I was a little panicked at times, however, my dad was just like, “Well, we’ll just do it some other way.” Never give up. Never give in. There is always some way to get someting to eat, keep warm, get where you want to go. You can toss in the towel like some prepper haters in the article suggests, and thats fine, I can always use another grease rag.

          Oh, one thing I also remember: as my father and I were out cutting wood to burn in the fireplace we would find mushrooms. No, not morels or some that you’ve heard of, but, oyster shelf mushrooms. They were hard as a rock. Prefrozen. I was given the job of collecting them. We drag out a tree and I’d knock all the shrooms off of it and put them in a burlap bag. We brush them off and toss them in a freezer bag and then into the freezer. When mom was ready, she’d thaw them and we’d eat them. I even roasted them over the fire, basting them with butter, and ate them. Makes my mouth water just thinking of it!!! We had tons of them. In fact, at one point, we had no more room in the freezer. We just left the bag setting outside.

          That was almost 40 years ago. I’m a prepper because if you’re not, you’re just kind of stupid, in my opinion. People that don’t prepare for a little adversity are just dumb.

      67. The Rainbow….

        In 1966, as a young kid of 6 years, my family moved to Moscow, Idaho where my dad was pursuing a PhD at the University of Idaho. We lived in the south area of Moscow heading towards an area called Genessee, Idaho.

        If you dont know the Palouse country, it is basically big rolling hills of vast lands of wheat. It is the dryland bread basket of the world where wheat yields of 100 bushels per acre are common without any irrigation. It is a snow and rainfed area.

        My sister and I went to grade school in Genessee. My mom worked at Genessee until about 5pm and my dad stayed at school until later times, cause he worked at nights.

        In April, the rolling hills are green. It is a green that only Dorothy could admire.

        As usual, after school, the school bus dropped me and my sister off at our farmhouse that my parents were renting. That day it was raining. And it rained another hour or so while we were at home waiting for mom.

        The rain stopped and then came the rainbow.

        Rainbows are commom here, but not this one. As a young kid, it was a very big rainbow. And I wanted to chase it to its end.

        I talked my sister into leaving the house and going to the rainbow and see what it looked like. I thought I could grab it when I got there. My sister and I walked and ran over several of the rolling hills, yet the rainbow was just alittle further.

        After doing this for awhile, my sister got tired and stopped. I continued to the next hill, and then got frustrated because the rainbow again was just alittle further ahead.

        It was getting to dusk and my sister yelled for me to come back. I told her no but I will be back and will go just one more hill further. She pleaded, and then left. Well I reached the next hill, and then darkness came. It was turning from day into night.

        And darkness came fast, and I was alone.

        I cried for my sister, but nothing. If you know this area, when it is dark it is very, very dark. Nothing.

        I was lost, and I cried. The tears were large and fear settled in. I could hear the coyotes and I kept walking in the darkness. I have never felt fear and lonliness like this ever since. I was afraid and I experienced pure loneliness and I regretted not going back when my sister was calling for me.

        Later, I found a road. The usual country road and not paved. I walked on it. With time, from a distant view, I saw headlights coming in and out of focus as they were going up and down the country road. Lucky for me, it was my parents and my sister. They found me and I was no longer lost.

        To this day I remember that and what being helpless and unprepared felt like. I was 100% helpless. Fear was always there. I really hated that moment. I dont want to experiance it again. That is what motivates me to be prepared for what I fear the future is going to bring.

      70. There are some hard decisions that are coming. Preppers are going to have to balance their natural tendancy to want to help people, with the need for famly security.
        I have adopted a policy of keeping my mouth shut, and telling no one of what I am doing, or have done. The only people I do talk to about what’s coming, are people I know who are doing the same thing.
        When everything starts really boiling, all these people you tried to convert to prepping, are going to remember who warned them, and be at your door. They will demand, not ask, for some of your stuff. To them , it is community property.
        The doom and gloom that was once just a posibility, is now more of a certainty. it’s just not that hard to see the terrible outcome of a society, who is just a bunch of brainwashed sheeple, who are programmed to do whatever the evening news tells them to do, and think.
        Read the handwriting on the wall folks. keep your mouths shut, and stay on task. This sin’t going to turn out well.

      72. The GMO crops are more expensive to grow and have a much lower yield. The quicker we get these disease causing crops out of the picture, the better.

        Commodities not only going up because of supply/demand and inflation, but are also going up because of market manipulation in the futures exchanges along with the derivative side-bets.
        Your morning coffee has gone up not just because of shipping costs and price of production, but mostly because of paper market manipulation.

        • *the futures markets are doing price-discovery and risk-transference from farmers to speculators. Any manipulation is either being done by government (interest rates) or banks (gold/silver). This is not the fault of the market itself. Free markets are a GOOD THING and should be protected. If you don’t like free markets, then you must not like free people either.

          *coffee prices are going DOWN right now, not UP. In fact, we hit a new contract low in current-month coffee a few days ago. This is due to increased supplies from countries like Vietnam, which are now opening up to foreign trade.

          But regardless of these facts, I’m quite sure that the next time prices for corn go up, people like you will be begging the government to “do something”.

      74. What more do we need, to open our eyes to the fact that we should be prepping, NOW. All you have to do is look around at what is happening at the very moment were in. They come on slowly and then! Thing happen very rapidly! How many readers, myself included, said I’m going to buy that gun,or some of those magazines or a case of that Ammo. But something came up, or we got distracted and put it off.We knew this day was coming, we saw it before with the Clinton Ban. And after that ban “Sunset” we said were going to stock up now, but we put it off. Go try and buy any of those items now. This very same thing will come upon us with foodstock and it will be to late to act. Most of us already have some weapons and ammo so in that respect we’ll survive. But when it comes to food, we’ll be in a world of hurt. Wise food prepping during a time of plenty is not selfish. If you want to see selfish, just wait until the shelves are going empty. And while your prepping for defense and food just remember, the LORD will come like a thief in the night, so most importantly you better be Prepping for that.

      76. Well, my wife and I had my sister-in-law and her husband over for supper last night. We had finished eating and the conversation was just meandering chit-chat when the subject of the school shooting came up. My daughter, a first grade school teacher, showed my SIL the video of the “second man” running through the woods behind the school. My SIL said she didn’t believe it but that it was only Lana that was responsible. Then she made this statement: “Well you know the mother was a prepper kook who had all this food stored up and owned a whole bunch of assault weapons.” I caught my wife’s eye when it was said and she smiled a little bit. My SIL is totally oblivious of ANYTHING that goes on in the world unless it relates to shopping and/or Bingo at the town firehouse. Her husband is great but says very little. I’m toying with putting my SIL on the “Starvation list”

        we have the ability to house ourselves and our close family in tents and covering tarps.. we have a means of heat and cooking as well… 4 ways to produce clean, potable water… we would also make arrangements for a limited amount of charity help for others, bearing in mind that my philosophy of charity is teaching a man to fish while giving him enough for the moment to get by for his first fishing venture… for instance: some line, a few hooks, plastic bait, a bobber, a sinker or 2, a few waterproof matches and a folded sheet of foil all in a small metal container… oh yeah – all this with a word of caution: go take care of himself…

        this is a “bare-bones” explanation just to get my approach across…

      87. Someone pleae take a read at the Bible. Read Revelation, Daniel, Habakkuk. You’re right, the world is going to get much worse. Prepping will be a good thing for the short term. Many people will go into the woods/wilderness to survive. We’ll all be competing for the same, limited “supplies” that nature can give us. Not everyone lives/can live in the “wild”. If all urban people head to the “wild”, survival will be short-lived even for preppers. All that grain,dehydrated/canned food, gardens-where will all the needed water come from to utilize such supplies? A family,including pets, watchdogs, “survival animals”,(sheep, goats,chickens, etc)must be properly hydrated to do the hard work of survival. I always see “food and shelter” listed as the first items needed for survival; seems odd most preppers don’t consider a clean water source before all else. The world is short of clean drinking water at this moment. Many people don’t have the money/skills to prep as if life will eventually go on in reverse mode, i.e. a return to “the good old days of self reliance”. I have never seen a site/individual offer to teach somone certain skills for prepping-at least any that aren’t books/videos, and they aren’t cheap. Seems preppers aren’t willing to share their knowledge to help others, truly teaching, hands-on skills. I don’t believe that, it simply appears to be so. If I’m wrong, someone please let me know, politely. Be it known I’m not knocking preppers at all; just putting in my own opinion.

      88. Since it is the holidays, I thought I would bring good cheer to all Americans.

        I have read several articles that state nearly 50,000 drones will be in American space and only in America in the next two years. These drones are from military drones to strike a dissendent doing organic gardening, to as small as a hummingbird for spy purposes only.

        These drones will be used in America only, based on the article(s).

        Lets assume that only 5,000 of the 50,000 drones are for military striking purposes only within America. The other 45,000 are used for spy technologies.

        If you assume that each drone of 5,000 can do 4 sorti’s per day, then that is about 7 million sorti’s per year.

        Now there are about 311 million people in America. That is about 86 million households when you consider families, singles, divourcees, students, etc. Let say that 6 million of the 86 million households are preppers.

        You see, when there is an economic collapse the bigger cities will have civil war and the smaller areas where many preppers live will be under the drones. The 7 million sorti’s in one year for the 6 million preppers will thin that crowd pretty fast.

        For 2013, preparation needs to be what Daisy and other articles show. But also, it needs to be on a very serious nature. You need to have a food storage of 6 months, but you also need to know how to gather the ‘free’ food from the land.

        People, this drone stuff could be in full effect by year 2016. Thus, 2013 is a very important year of preparation.

        Do we really believe that there will be elections in 2016?

        I hope I am 100% wrong. But from all the readings and what is happening I dont think so. For instance, the money printings. At $1T per year, the only effect of the is collapse.

        I am happy to see many people starting to see the ugly future and starting to prepare. The problem is that most people are not, dont care, and dont believe it.
