On June 27, an asteroid dubbed 2011MD will make a pass 7,500 miles above the earth’s surface.
Asteroid fly-by’s are really no big deal, as they tend to happen quite regularly. What is troubling about this particular fly-by is that NASA and other sky watchers completely missed it until about four days before the scheduled pass.
Here’s something to dwell on as you head to work next week: A small asteroid the size of a tour bus will make an extremely close pass by the Earth on Monday, but it poses no threat to the planet
The asteroid will make its closest approach at 1:14 p.m. EDT (1714 GMT) on June 27 and will pass just over 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometers) above the Earth’s surface, NASA officials say. At that particular moment, the asteroid — which scientists have named 2011 MD — will be sailing high off the coast of Antarctica, almost 2,000 miles (3,218 km) south-southwest of South Africa.

Asteroid 2011 MD was discovered Wednesday (June 22) by LINEAR, a pair of robotic telescopes in New Mexico that scan the skies for near-Earth asteroids. The best estimates suggest that this asteroid is between 29 to 98 feet (9 to 30 meters) wide.
Granted, Asteroid 2011MD is about the size of a school bus and an Extinction-Level-Event (ELE) object would be significantly larger.
But, the impression left upon us by the scientific community is that they have everything under control, and any potentially threatening space objects would be identified, cataloged, and analyzed – and if necessary the public would be alerted.
How much do you trust that NASA will let us know of an imminent threat to Earth that might include asteroid impact, massive solar flare, coronal mass ejection – or perhaps something worse?

they will not tell us and articles on the net recently have come right out and said so. Think tanks back in Nixon’s administration got together and thought this through and decided that major catastrophic events would not be told to the public
I find it impressive that a school bus sized asteroid can be detected four days away.
My problem is that if a larger one is detected we will probably not be told. The least we deserve is time to say what needs to be said to those who are important to us before we embark on the final journey.
I guess if we get underground reports that the elite are heading for their bunkers we might get a heads up, but the corp will not clue us in.
Imagine if an asteroid was detected one week away that would totally devastate us. One last week of fun without regret or contemplation of the consequences because there would be none.
Let the elite have their bunkers. I would rather die with dignity in the company of my family than live with the scum that has floated to the top with unsavory acts.

ELEnin is only visible in the infra red anyway.
If this thing is 2.5 times the mass of Jupiter as some think; remembering that Jupiter is 2.5 times the mass of the rest of the solar system excepting the Sun; this thing should have consequences for other planets and moons besides Earth, and soon.
I am making my decision one way or the other on what happens on July 7th, if anything. Let Dad know. Personally, I am not expecting anything to happen but I will keep an open mind and respond accordingly.
I have been told that now the thought is “it might not do as much to Saturn as originally thought cause they are in different hemi’s” I don’t know…that doesn’t pass the smell test with me, at least not 100%
You know Elenin is getting all the attention, yet there is also YU55, which I believe comes as close as .0023 AU or roughly 200+ thousand miles. Biggest asteroid to come that close to earth since 1976 I think?
Also there is Honda and Levy……all 4 in the August through November time frame….that’s a lot of traffic and gravitational pull along with the damaged magnetosphere…..going to be one heck of a fall season this year I think. And on top of that we have a false flag attack coming soon….JMHO and I think it will be nuclear. Watch Saudia Arabia and the royal family, when the unrest reaches there, the royal family will be in danger and probably leave…..that will be one of the two biggest things to watch financially/currency wise. Then other one will be the Euro…when it dies, the dollar will be not too far behind it….again JMHO. Them are good bug out indicators I think….if we are still here??

I stumbled across an old Science documentary series last night (the old “Hyperspace” ones)…
I recall seeing something about how we’re now at the time when the Solar System has just (well, relatively) passed through a thick region of stars about a million years ago. It takes about a million years for disturbed Oort Cloud objects to make their way into the inner Solar System, so if we’re gonna get it, this is about the right time for that to happen. Happens on a 30-million year cycle. The last two times spawned a mass extinction event via asteroids (two cycles ago, the Dinosaurs got it).
So yeah, we’re due for one if there’s anything with our collective name on it. I just hope that we as a species get our heads out of our collective ass and start colonizing places off-Earth. That way, if our big doom-maker shows up, say, 1,000 years from now, we’d not only be ready, but the human race might just survive pretty well.
Don’t we spend a lot of money so those fools can keep an eye out for this stuff?

They concentrate on searching for things that could do actual damage. This thing was about the size of a garbage truck, and would burn off most of its mass during entry. The resulting basketball-sized rock might take out someone’s house, but that’d be about it… if it didn’t break up into dust first.
I’d rather they remained concentrated on things that could take out a city or worse.

A different aspect to consider is whether or not they actually missed it. What if the announcement was only made following a definitive calculation showing that it would miss Earth?
While this is a small asteroid, a larger one would most certainly follow the above logic. No announcement would be made unless it was going to miss Earth. Otherwise you cause panic prior to the event.
good point bob. From what I understand, they made final calculations within the last 24 hours of the exact trajectory, so there is always the possibility that they did see this thing weeks or months out, but kept it quiet until they knew for sure.
It was actually discovered by a backyard astrologist and not NASA.

NASA has confessed that they cant see an earth bound comet or asteroid that comes from behind the sun until it would be to late. (not making excuses for them just stating a fact)
I’m not entirely certain NASA could find a near-earth object if it fell in their back pocket. If they did, they certainly wouldn’t tell the public because the people they answer to wouldn’t be able to control said public.

And no, NASA’s budget for skywatching is almost nada. Look it up for yourselves.
Were it an ELE or near-ELE there is no reason to NOT divulge it. Providing a big rock isn’t rising up out of the sun’s gravity well, we should have a few weeks warning. The probability is greater for a near-ELE than a planet killer. Advance warnings to the public increases survival potential. For small rocks like this one, better to keep quiet until the orbit is computed. With the scientific illiteracy of the US, best to keep some info on the Q-T rather than risk a panic for no real reason.
That’s astronomer not astrologist. An astrologist couldn’t find their butt with both hands. I mean come on, the moon is rising in Leo and Jupiter is in Virgo so my love life is gonna improve?

Coronal Mass Ejection: It’s a huge gust of wind on the sun that releases sun debris and radiation into space. As it gets close to Earth(or other planets, presumably) it causes geomagnetic storms that can disrupt communications, satellites and the grid itself.

Here’s something a little similar, but a little off topic. Anybody watch the Weather Channel today? No mention of the fly-by, but tons of repeats of the report released over the weekend (can’t remember the agency) predicting a “Megaquake” for CA. Now, while that’s not new news, what caught my attention was the statement that “many years of working to prevent earthquakes has apparently re-set the probability clock to zero”, meaning the quake was well over-due and could happen any time.
My first thought was, “What earthquake prevention?” My next was, “What do they know that they aren’t coming right out and telling us?” Immediately followed by, “This sounds like a major distraction attempt. Wonder what is REALLY going to happen!”
Anyway, haven’t seen or heard it discussed on any other news source. But it kind of follows the issue of NASA and what they will or won’t tell us if something were going to happen. Would I believe them, one way or the other. Probably not much more than most of you here, judging by your posts.
‘Course, I may pay more attention if CA gets hit with a big one in the next few weeks.

Having spent the last year delivering military “camps” around to various parts of the country, it has become painfully obvious that the govt is preparing for the arrival of something or someone. These camps consist of 20ft high chain link fenceing, MASH units. MRE’s by the thousands, razor wire, water purification plants, thousands of cots and materials resembling what appears to be internment camps. These are being placed around the country in relatively isolated areas. Once delivered, military forces provided armed security. Just a thought, but check out “Ancient Aliens” series from the History Channel. Whatever the reason for these camps, our govt has foreknowlege of events soon to unfold. I am a huge skeptic of doomsday forecasting, but 12/21/12 is starting to make sense. Whatever is coming, we can’t stop it. Our way of life is about to change in a way that no one is quite ready for. Re-education and indoctrination will be the order of the day. Our choice will be to succumb or die. Good luck to us all!

BTW – researched Salton Lake and found several current stories on the earthquake report ((co-authored by Scripps). No mention made of the ‘earthquake prevention’ comment reported by TWC. And same premise was put forth in a study some 20 yrs. ago. Am wondering if they are expecting a big one due to elenin alignment – CA is only quarter section of Ring of Fire that hasn’t had a “big one” in a while.

Honestly, at this point, if nothing significant happens on or about July 7th, then I have to believe that ELEnin is NOT the danger it has been made out to be.
Again Granny, ELEnin is in the inner solar system but if it is a brown dwarf (Nibiru) 2.5 times the mass of Jupiter, while Jupiter is 2.5 times the mass of the entire solar system except the Sun, the S should be hitting the fan with the moons of Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, or Jupiter.
And if not them, why didn’t it affect the astroid belt, or the Ort Cloud on the way in. Its just hard to believe that an object this massive wouldn’t affect other planets and moons other than just Earth.
Thats not RATIONAL. So unless something really special happens on July 7th, I am of a mind that ELENIN is NOT an Extinction Level Event.
