    Associated Press:

At a town hall meeting Thursday, Bauer, who is running for governor in his own right now that Sanford is term-limited, said: “My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed! You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that.”

Democrats and others railed at him.

“I am disgusted by these comments. They show an unbelievable lack of compassion toward the unemployed workers in our state who are hurting during these hard times,” said state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, a Democrat who is also running for governor. “His comments were immoral and out of line.”

      1. Or just, maybe, they will become stronger and take care of themselves. Teach a man to fish.

      2. Giving food to a needy person (or animal) is an act of charity and to condemn such acts, as Bauer has done, is inhuman.

Bauer should instead focus on the fact that the money was originally obtained through robbery: taking money from people against their will. If you want a bureaucrat to decide how your money is best spent, then feel free to donate to them, but don’t touch my wallet. It’s a perversion of the human spirit to have your money stolen one minute, and the next minute to have to subsist off of tainted funds.

      3. Sad, but he’s right.  His choice of words might have been better, but it’s accurate.  The comment about charity is correct, but the government has no business providing charity.  The private citizen, the church or the not-for-profit should provide charity… NOT the govt.

“The real destroyer of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations and benefits.” — Plutarch 46-120 A.D.

      4. “They show an unbelievable lack of compassion toward the unemployed workers in our state who are hurting during these hard times,” said state Sen. Vincent Sheheen”

And this guy shows a lack of compassion by failing to acknowledge that the hard times are a direct result of government meddling. Government redistribution of wealth – taxes, welfare, bailouts, and fiat currency counterfeiting – has as much a chance of improving the economy as withdrawing blood from one butt cheek and injecting it into the other one does at curing anemia.

      5. Dr Acula – bravo, that’s the funniest comment I’ve read in quite a while!  lol

      6. For Pete’s sake! The guy is absolutely right! The culture of dependency is just that, a culture of dependency fueled by tax money generating an ample food supply for the unproductive. Keep feeding and and it will grow. Unfortunately those stray, unproductive mutts vote and there are a lot of them. You can’t win an election if you don’t please the strays, er, uh, poor.

“I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it.” -Franklin

We should NEVER have started this welfare thing. It should have been a jobs program, not a stray animal feeding program. Now we have a section of society that claim as their only function: cash welfare checks. Great Job! Sure, Acula, giving to the poor is charity and divine. But, feeding stray animals is just stupid. They will never go home and find their place. In effect you do them a disservice limiting them to a life of total dependence and robbing the populace for what?

The money is all part of it. Welfare dollars are just more political footballs for the elected oligarchy to divided and conquer us with.

      7. I use to live in San Diego and became friends with some military families. Someone asked me if I would marry a gay solider in exchange  free medical and he would get additional pay for wife+kid. I was told there would be a bonus if I could get a 2nd kid (??).

There is an incentive to increase your dependency and keep you there. There is a reward of more resources for extra dependents.

Those who work in social services will often work harder to increase your dependence than empowering those in order to become independent. When you think about it – social workers are commonly dependent on keeping people dependent.

      8. I rember a time when I was young that the idea that you needed welfare was an indacator tha you were a failure !  It was the last resort and that you had nothing else .  There was a  “stigma” attached to that , you were a looser and worthless . People had pride then , thay got jobs thay worked for a living and paid their taxes . Got an education and made somthing of themselves .  Sadly we see little of that today .  Prehaps that is what he wanted to say. Its just that his choice of words could have been better .

      9. Most of the critical remarks of the American underclass don’t address the reality of long term contraction in the job market. Real wages, for those who can find jobs relitive to inflation have been eroded leaving so many looking for work unable to do anything but collect public assistance. What about the millions on unemployement, do you chastise them for receiving what they can? Are they lazy, or without pride?

      10. It’s clear from what’s going on, and most of the commenters here get it, is that we are moving much faster toward socialism. Everywhere I look people who made stupid decisions are getting rewarded with government handouts and are becoming further dependent on the system. Meanwhile, there are little or no incentives for people to become self-sufficient. Not only that, but I fully expect the government to punish those who have become self-sufficient. Strange world we live in.

      11. Very good point Paul. As a society we like to point fingers at each other to assign blame but rarely do we ever take a look at the root causes for why things are the way they are. I blame both parties for this nonsense.

      12. “Someone asked me if I would marry a gay solider in exchange  free medical and he would get additional pay for wife+kid. I was told there would be a bonus if I could get a 2nd kid (??).” – Why not? If the government gives you free handouts, the logical thing to do is take them. After all, the government already robbed the funds from hardworking people. It’s better for you to take the stolen money than for it to be spent, say, on blowing up another a pregnant Iraqi woman or bailing out AIG. Also, by entering an approved marriage, you are preventing the soldier from entering a gay marriage, which the government’s moral police tell us is evil.
” There was a  “stigma” attached to that , you were a looser and worthless ” – There is no stigma in seeking profit. If my employer pays me for my hard work, then I’m proud to accept the money. If the government pays me for loafing around and generating welfare babies, then I’d be similarly proud of my hard work. People who’d turn down the money because they’d feel like a loser are few and far between. To expect people to do this is to misunderstand the nature of man.

      13. As I said PAUL , its the resource of last resort , but its not supposed to be permanent thats  what I weas pointing out . Have the drive and will to go out and get work .  The best time to look for work is when you allready have a job .  You can be selective . start with somthing , anything then keep looking for a bettet one No jobs in your area ?  MOVE !  Go some place else . There are jobs available in this country go an find them .

      14. Dracula,

Your comments border on activating my “troll alert” but I’m going to take them at face value.

The government is not stealing money, that is an absurd characterization that goes beyond hyperbole into simply untrue.  The concept of a government taxing those who enjoy a common good is old and established — from cavemen skimming off a bowl of dinosaur stew and giving to grandma who certainly didn’t hunt said beast.  One may take issue with the rate of tax, the level and type of expenditures, but I would be interested to know to what country you plan to move such that you pay no tax? I am assuming you’re planning emigrate.

With respect to welfare recipients, that is a different issue than unemployment or any other temporary program.  When the largess is structural, yes you incent many to behave badly.  Mary, handing someone money without end is NOT teaching someone to fish.

Airborne, I think DrAcula is right, your experience when you were younger isn’t representative of the nature of men, but the nature of men who settled the USA.   My grandmother (b. 1905) was horrified at public assistance.  My mother (b. 1940) sees welfare as distasteful, but “deserves” social security and is angry at not having free, deluxe healthcare.  And now?  It seems everyone thinks everything should be free … just awful IMSHO.

The nation’s founders and early settlers were a self-selected group, not representative of “mankind” but the best of breed risk-takers who had a desire to better their lot and build something great.  That fire in the belly passed thru many generations when youth looked to elders for guidance, which has ceased to be the case with a plasma TV in every room spouting garbage.  Now if someone tweets about a government handout, we have a stampede of lemmings lining up to “get theirs.”   It will not end well.

      15. “The concept of a government taxing those who enjoy a common good is old and established” –  Just because a wrong is commited frequently doesn’t turn it into a right.

“The government is not stealing money, that is an absurd characterization” – So you wouldn’t have a problem if I came to your home demanding money, threatening to evict you if you didn’t agree to pay for my “protection” services? I only want to do it because I am so charitable and caring. Would it make it legitimate if I get permission from your neighbors first?

“what country you plan to move such that you pay no tax?” – Now you’re being sarcastic, you know there is no place on Earth without a government / strongman / gang of criminals seeking to violate your property rights.

“The nation’s founders” – You are obviously fond of the USA, but do you remember why it was founded? I don’t understand how you can both support taxation as being just and also rejoice at the founding of the USA: Britons being murdered in order to thwart collection of legally levied taxes.

      16. Once the Declaration of Indepence was issued, Dr. Acula, the fight was not about taxes, but Sovereignty: King or people. Therefore, the killing of  British soldiers in self defense was justified.

      17. “Once the Declaration of Indepence was issued… the killing of British soldiers… was justified” – So if my neigborhood were to issue a declaration of independence, you would consider it moral to kill anyone who entered the neighborhood seeking to collect taxes? And similarly you think it is moral for an individual to not pay taxes demanded against one’s will? Or is there some fixed number of people required, say 157, at which point taxes can morally be challenged? I’m trying to understand your exact criteria separating just taxation from unjust taxation.

      18. The Dr. is obviously the only one who has thought this through.  Without private property rights a man cannot be free to enjoy the fruits of his labor.  If he chooses charity that is his own business.  When parties A and B vote to take the money of C and give it to D that is theft.  Either stealing is wrong or it isn’t.  Man is free or not.  There is no gray area.  A = A.

      19. We live in a world largely if not wholly governed by force. The concept of  “Legitimate Authority” is nothing more than a concept. Airborne- “People had pride then , thay got jobs thay worked for a living and paid their taxes.” Social security and federal income taxes on individuals are unconstitutional. They are a greater tyranny than most brainwashed, fluoridated sheep even dare think.  Labor was considered a equitable exchange of value and your wages were not considered a profit. Only profits were to be taxed. Wages were an equal exchange for an equal amount of labor. Imagine how much wealth across this nation has been sucked from our local communities and hoarded in DC.Imagine every fed tax and social security dollar you ever made was in your pocket. Now thats freedom. The freedom of being debt free and educating your children. Have no doubt that a great tyranny has long saddled us like slaves.
