The Trump administration raised tariffs another 5% officially on Wednesday, prompting angry warnings from retailers about price increases on goods such as toys before the holiday shopping season. It sure looks like the punishment on the already cash strapped American consumer will not abate anytime soon.
More than 160 other business groups, including the National Retail Federation, Retail Industry Leaders Association, and Association of Equipment Manufacturers, have urged President Donald Trump to postpone the tariffs, warning they would hit Americans in the middle of the busy holiday shopping season.
According to Reuters, the Trump administration made it official. There is now an extra 5% tariff on $300 billion in Chinese imports and set collection dates of September 1 and December 15, prompting hundreds of U.S. retail, footwear, toy, and technology companies to warn of price hikes. Make no mistake, a tariff is a tax, taxation is theft, and consumers within the United States will suffer under the weight of the increased cost of goods.

People seem to be overly mad at China for “taking advantage of America” however, punishing the American consumer is far from teaching the Chinese a lesson – especially because the government insisting on the tariffs is the same government who caused the problems with China to begin with. Burdensome regulations on businesses in the United States made producing goods in China look more appealing and from the very beginning, this has had an effect on everyday people in America just trying to work and get by.
I get a lot of flack for saying the truth about this trade war, but it’s not doing anyone any service by lying about who ends up paying for it. Just because Trump’s motives are good, doesn’t mean he’s doing the right thing by making Americans suffer the financial burdens of the tariffs. For the past two years, the Trump administration has been attempting to pressure China into eliminating unfair trade practices and make sweeping changes to its policies on intellectual property protection, forced transfers of technology to Chinese firms, industrial subsidies, and market access for U.S. companies. But the regulations causing all of those problems were written by the U.S. government, who is now punishing Americans for the failures of the political establishment.
The U.S. Trade Representative’s office said in an official notice that collections of a 15% tariff will begin at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) Sunday on a portion of the list covering over $125 billion of targeted goods from China.
This initial tranche includes smartwatches, Bluetooth headphones, flat-panel televisions and many types of footwear.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection will also start collecting a 15% tariff on Dec. 15 on the remainder of the $300 billion list, including cellphones, laptop computers, toys and clothing, USTR said in the Federal Register filing. –Reuters
More than 200 U.S. footwear companies on Wednesday said that the added 15% tax on shoes would come on top of tariffs that already average 11% and reach 67% on some shoes, boosting the costs paid for by consumers by $4 billion every year. “Imposing tariffs in September on the majority of all footwear products from China – including nearly every type of leather shoe – will make it impossible for hardworking American individuals and families to escape the harm that comes from these tax increases,” the companies wrote in a letter to Trump.
If this happens, it is not good for Trump.

REGARDING THE SUBJECT of this article: I don’t know if tariffs are a good or a bad idea. I think incentives are better than penalties. More people should be motivated to produce right here in the States. I buy American as much as possible. I buy from local producers. If a product is produced close by, I buy as presents if I have no particular need myself.
There is a woman I saw interviewed on Redicetv. She raises sheep for wool. Her motto “from sheep to shawl”. Interesting, as I had the same idea. Shawls make great presents. I have many. Mine are mostly silk. You know where silk comes from. Haha, nobody is perfect.

How protected are we really from these globalist influences though? Shaking up monopolistic competition and compelling alternatives is worth a try. The difference between vested interests and short term thinking vs long term financial planning for the good of all can have stark contrasts.
Looking forward to a return to more sensible purchasing power, hopefully it’s not to late to bring so many industries back to the USA. We buy clothes at the goodwill a lot and especially kids clothes which may cycle through goodwill in longer intervals more times, it’s amazing to see all the old made in USA symbols on the clothes and even things like old board games. Americans used to be proud of that and consumers like us still seek that out.
Genius, don’t be jaded, slow it down a little. Consumerism has an ugly side but also giving and caring is something that does not have to be reserved for just holidays. You’re speaking on corporatization of American traditions. So again, support the companies you believe in, don’t feel pressured just to buy if you’re dealing with a monopolized product lineup of global corporate products.
Speaking on the bright side of online shopping, consumers can gain access to those rarely available at retail, more durable and locally sourced goods. With some products we can more effectively source made in usa. Like I bought this made in usa leather tri fold for 40 bucks. Reflecting, it may be the first made in USA wallet I’ve ever owned. Not as much as we want is available but every dollar spent locally matters and those companies get more influence one purchase at a time. Supply follows the demand. It’s an illusionary message that global corporate retailers present to consumers, these are your only options. That’s not true.
As far as price hikes, one is hard pressed to distinguish those from general runaway inflation. By purchasing more durable more lasting goods, like keeping away from disposable items, for lease items, items with recurrent cost to continue to use them, plastic throw aways, the dollar goes further and you find yourself having to spend less time as a consumer, spending more time doing what you would rather do with your life. Some of that made in china stuff does not last a single day before something breaks, and they rely on plastic and pressboard so much, we’ve had enough.
Do you really think that there is not going to be pain in war. Its a WAR damn it, so get used to some pain. It will make you stronger.

I think the people most upset about cutting of china are those profiting the most from those agreements. Not surprisingly the news is packed full of negative stories on this matter.
The border rules change, disincentivizing trade with some other countries where we could never safely live ourselves and enjoy similar rights, promoting growth at home, all very positive stories.
