A region in China has reintroduced COVID-19-era medical tyranny after an outbreak of Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus, has infected thousands. In China’s southern Guangdong Province, health officials have reinstated the COVID-style lockdown and containment tactics as the area reports a major outbreak.

The outbreak is centered in Foshan, a city 170km north of Hong Kong, where more than half of the nearly 8,000 reported cases have occurred, according to a report by RT. 

Back in 2023, the World Health Organization warned of this virus and dengue fever spreading in the Americas. Noting much seemed to come from that alert, however.

Chikungunya, Zika, and dengue are spread by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Symptoms include sudden fever, joint pain, headaches, and a rash. Most cases are mild but tend to be more severe in newborns, older people, and those with underlying conditions such as diabetes.

Some symptoms can be debilitating and prolonged. Others, such as nausea and vomiting, are warning signs that would warrant a hospital visit, according to a report by Axios. 

While the Chikungunya virus is not directly transmitted person to person, intense protocols are still in place. Those who have been infected with the virus are being quarantined in special isolation wards or hospitals, local officials say. They are required to remain in beds protected by mosquito nets to prevent mosquitoes from biting patients and spreading the virus.

Additionally, an aggressive “anti-mosquito campaign” has been launched in the region to try to cull as many of the problematic insects as possible.

Reports also state that mosquitoes eating fish have been released into stagnant water ponds around the area to help diminish the population of the disease-ridden insects.
