A new poll from the Associated Press shows that a stunningly large portion of Americans are completely out of touch with the US government’s ability to manage a crisis on the scale of the Japanese nuclear disaster:
The Associated Press-GfK poll comes as Japan continues to struggle with a nuclear crisis caused by a March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant has leaked radiation into the environment and radioactive water gushed into the Pacific Ocean. Japan was rattled by a strong aftershock and tsunami warning Thursday, but officials reported no immediate sign of new problems.
The poll finds that about a fourth of those surveyed were highly confident that the U.S. government is prepared to handle a nuclear emergency, while almost three-fourths were only somewhat or not confident.
But many people doubt such an emergency will happen in this country.
About three in 10 think such an emergency is extremely or very likely, compared with seven in 10 who think it is only somewhat or not likely. Among people who think a disaster is highly likely, almost eight in 10 lack confidence the government would be ready.
Even among those think it’s not too likely or not at all likely to happen, almost two-thirds still lacked confidence the government would be ready.

Inquiring minds are asking what the 25% of Americans who are highly confident that the US government could deal with such a disaster were doing in the days leading up to and after Hurricane Katrina, the massive flooding in the southeast in 2010, and the BP oil spill.
- New Orleans: It took the federal government three days to get water to the Superdome. The entire city devolved into lawlessness within hours.
- Southeast Floods: When floods sweeping through Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee destroyed property and left tens of thousands of Americans homeless in 2009, the federal government didn’t show up. This disaster was barely a blip on the mainstream media’s radar.
- The Gulf: The BP oil spill, by all official accounts, was a non-disaster. Though it was one of the largest oil spills in history, the government and BP completely denied the scale of the disaster. Instead of advising residents of the potential dangers of oil and chemical dispersants like Corexit in their seafood, the media touted the secretive government controlled response as a success. Hundreds, if not thousands, of coastal area residents are experiencing adverse and potentially deadly health effects even today. The long-term ramifications for the ecological environment are not yet known.
- New York: In the days following the September 11th attacks, the Environmental Protection Agency advised emergency responders and cleanup crews that the air was completely safe to breathe. While the government still denies it did anything seriously wrong, independent studies like one involving the Office of Medical Affairs at the New York City Fire Department indicate that the health effects are extremely serious. Of the 5000 emergency personnel involved in the study, 1000 members of the group are on permanent respiratory disability. Over 100,000 people who helped with the September 11th aftermath were eligible for Ground Zero worker’s compensation benefits, indicating that there was, in fact, a clear and present danger to people even though the government denied any such health effects when they were sending people into the area.
- Fukushima: Within days of the nuclear disaster in Japan the US Surgeon General advised Americans to stock up on Potassium Iodide in the event of nuclear radiation crossing the Pacific and contaminating the west coast. Since then, even though millions of Americans are concerned, confused and frightened, government agencies responsible for alerting the public to potential dangers, including Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the EPA, and the Office of the President have either remained completely silent or have downplayed any potential danger. All the while, no accurate radiation readings, analysis or public discussion has taken place. Like New York and the Gulf Coast, there are, apparently, no negative health effects of radiation. In fact, the potential radiation contaminating rainwater, seawater, milk, and food is so safe, that the US and EU have bilaterally agreed to raise the safety limits on these radiation levels.
To be clear, the US government, like Japan’s government, is totally unprepared to effectively manage a widespread regional or national crisis. They have a hard enough time dealing with city-wide crises, as evidenced above.
FEMA admits that it is unable to handle a serious emergency, especially at the onset of such an unforeseen event:
Following a disaster, community members may be on their own for a period of time because of the size of the area affected, lost communications, and impassable roads.
It could be days or weeks depending on the severity of the event.
The 25% of people who are highly confident that the US government is prepared for a nuclear or other disaster are likely completely unprepared. Having this kind of blind confidence in a system that has proven time and again that it will fail under the pressure of an emergency because of the sheer number of people affected and the bureaucracies involved in emergency response is nothing short of lunacy.
And for the 70% of people who believe that such a disaster is not likely in the US, you’re simply not thinking rationally. A nuclear disaster has already happened on US soil. So, too, has a massive earthquake that literally wiped out an entire city in the early 20th century. Today, more than ever, we must consider the real possibility of man-made disasters. The fact of the matter is that corporations take short-cuts – it’s all about profits. This is one of the reasons why Fukushima has reached the level of severity it has, and it is clearly the reason why the BP oil rig sank. When there’s big money involved, the decision makers who are beholden to shareholders don’t really care what the effects of an environmental disaster may be. Nor, do they care about the fall out from a massive economic collapse so long as their pockets have been lined.
As a technologically advanced nation, we’ve become complacent about our ability to cope with far-from-equilibrium events. We see panicked people on television who have lost family members in an earthquake, Tsunami or other disaster, and we assume it can’t happen here. In reality however, crises don’t happen just on television. They happen to real people, all over the world, and they happen quite regularly.
Taking responsibility for oneself and family is absolutely critical in today’s day and age. The slightest glitch in the system could lead to serious implications for entire regions of the world, adversely affecting millions of people instantly. And when that glitch happens, you can be assured that those 25% who believe the government is prepared, or the 70% who don’t believe such a disaster is likely on US soil, will be the first ones knocking on your door if they know you’ve done your due diligence.
The federal government can’t even product a budget or live within their means.Â
What makes people think they can successfully help when a real disaster occurs?!

Sure, you can have a basement, some KI tablets or seaweed, stock up on food and water, but all that seems like a lot of work.

My wife works managing an office full of nurses assisting injured workers get their treatments so they can get back to work. Â During the whole “bird flu” scare, they, and all the other medical treatment centers in the area, were told point blank by the feds that “in the event of a major pandemic, there is no help coming from the federal government”.

I would advise that part of your preps include creating yourself a first class first aid kit. Â I know that it may be tempting to just buy one off the internet, but you won’t get all the stuff you need in even the highest priced kits. Â Make friends with a nurse and tell them you want a real kit up to handling injuries up to and including (bear mauling, gunshot wounds, massive third degree burns, crushing and amputation injuries, compound fractures, and so forth). Â Tell the nurse (or EMT) that you need the kit for your cabin which is several hours from the nearest road or town. Â You also need some medical texts in hard copy. Â A medical dictionary and the AMA’s medical encyclopedia would be good places to start, but that is by no means a complete list.

My daughter is a critical care RN in the Emergency Room of a local Trauma
Center. I have helped a couple of the doctors there, who are preparing for tough times ahead, to get their ARs tricked-out, tuned up and zeroed in. I can get script for anything that they are able to write them for as well as bunches of the free samples that the big pharma sales reps deliver by the boxfull.
If you don’t already have a close friend who is a doctor; then I would damn sure see about making one quickly.
I need to get me a little nap now for the anticipated activity later tonight.The wife and I were over to ‘Wally World’ this afternoon for more T/P, paper towels, razors, floss, tooth paste, etc. If the Federal-F–ked-up-Government does shut down tonight @ 12:01 AM; I will be out the door @ 12:02 AM and headed back to stock up on some final canned-goods purchases and to get the gas cans filled before sun-up.

I called up my broker the other day. Never met him but he always has time to chat when I can get through. He always takes a 1.5% commision when I buy & sends me a bill in the mail. He trusts me I guess? He’s old and old fashion (he calls it wise). Keeps all the info on a 5×7 card instead of a computer. I don’t mind. I even send him X-mas gifts and he thanks me or the boss. Says he has my best interest in heart. I believe him. He goes on a lot vacations, I don’t mind. Says he’s in his golden years. They say brokers make you broke. I don’t know. I like him, really I do. He’s my PM’s broker. I wish he was my neighbor.

Contrary to what many people believe and joke about, the gubmint is not incompetent. It is much worse than that. They not only do not care about citizens, but would like many of us to die, preferably as soon as we are unable to pay into their system. They tolerate the slackers as long as we are paying the bill. Only a complete idiot would have any faith in gubmint.
One problem with their preparations which are being made at out expense is that if enough of us are gone, there is nothing left for them to rule over. Then they have the issue of loyalty from their minions. Are they quite sure that an end of world situation that  their underlings would not turn on them and keep everything for themselves? After all the underlings would have the guns because most politicians are incapable of doing even the most basic tasks themselves.
This outcome would do the rest of us no good unless the underlings pushed the “lords” out to face the survivors. Even this outcome would not really improve the lot of the average Joe, but would provide a little entertainment on the way out.
There is little doubt that a vast majority of our populous hasn’t got a clue. If they have a problem, they call 911. If they are hungry, they go to Jack in the box. If their car is on empty, they go to the gas station. And now these days, it’s as plain as the nose on their faces and yet they ignore its impending presents. This is called Normalcy Bias. And our family isn’t immune either. Our kids think we are absolutely nutts. Prepping, food, loads of it. Fuel, generators, tools, guns, ammunition, medical supplies, chickens, seeds, parts, oil, fasteners and the list goes on. Its going to be pitiful when this goes down.. there are going to be a lot of people suffering due to their own ignorance. God pity them.

The issue is really putting hte federal government back into it constitutionally-defined box, and letting the states act as mini-soveriegns within the Federal system. Starting to see quite a bit of this lately, fortunately. Things are a mess, but while I prepare for the worst (owning PMs, defensives, food, water, and networking with like-minded people), I’m becoming optomistic that we’ll get through this one.

@Bill – That is awesome idea, first 6 get a survival bag, 5lbs of rice, box of matches and TP, love it! Think I’ll implement a similar deal but only for those that I know. Can’t have my “can’t happen here” family thinking I’m a complete jerk. Works out good cause I put my rice into 5 or 10lb packages so I don’t open up 25lbs+ bags.
@MadMarkie – Keep the magazines loaded, doesn’t harm the springs like people think. Shot magazines that were loaded 20 years ago and they work just fine. Talking 7.62×51 rounds here too, pretty heavy with 20 rounds in a magazine (M1A configured as a DMR). Magazine has been reloaded and worked again like a charm. So now I keep all my magazines fully loaded can capped (dust cap).

I don’t even bother trying to “enlighten” anybody. If they are not doing something for themselves already, they are not going to do anything.
I know people who are going on vacations several times a year, boating, etc. but probably do not have two days of food (and no water) on hand. I recently saw one of these have to go to the grocery and buy some burgers and hot dogs to grill out that same evening. This family’s idea of being ready is to have the pizza man on speedial. In an emergency they could always eat their Ipads and boat (not even a good fishing boat).
It would be less frustrating to try to convince my sofa to prepare for an emergency.

Based on the amount of sheep in this country…I am surprised this percentage isn’t much higher…
25% is not that shocking. My neighbors think the government will “be there to help its people” if something terrible should happen. Talk about sheeple! Last year there was serious flooding in the town next door and my neighbors were surprised to learn the government hadn’t stepped in to help. I think most sheeple believe “everything will be just fine” and there is nothing to worry about.
I, on the other hand, have been busy prepping and ensuring that those close to me (who have brought it up) are directed to the proper resouces and are learning quickly by their own interest how to prep. I do not make it known that I am a prepper until the people asking have made it clear by their actions that they are seriously taking steps to get prepared themselves since that would be a nightmare for my family if the SHTF.
I can just picture the people who showed an interest in prepping but who were not serious in a SHTF situation. I think it would go, “We know that so and so has emergency supplies, well I think we should head straight there. They surely have enough to take care of us too.”I do not advertise that I am a prepper to anyone not close to me or that is not serious about prepping themselves. The people who are aware are prepared to take care of themselves, and the sheeple, well, what can I say? We all know how that movie ends…

I too have taken magazines that have been loaded for years out to the range. They have always fed flawlessly for me also; never had a failure to feed yet.
What is the longest that you have let a loaded magazine sit around before firing it? Mine were loaded for 3 – 4 years before I used them.
Where did this crazy rumor get started? Those who have encountered any sort of issues must have been using some really cheap magazines with some really cheap springs.
The same thing with ammo, if it is stored properly. I recently picked up some boxes of 7.62 x 39 manufactured in Russia in the early 70s; almost 40 years old. No issues.
Was watching the history channel Sunday morning. They ran a special on a SHTF Â apocalypse scenario involving a worldwide pandemic. Interesting! They hit the nail on the head, believe it or not. Lock and load!!!!
I think it is funny that people are asking whether or not the government is prepared for a disaster.
The government IS the disaster. It works precisely as intended for those seeking to control it. For those who believe it is legitimate and support it by paying tribute (to the IRS), it’s a disaster.
The other thing that is funny is that so many people believe the government determines their fate. Because they believe it, it becomes the truth to them.
I don’t know what is going to happen in the future, but I am 100% sure that any government intervention in anything, disaster or otherwise, will lead to the problems incompetence brings in any endeavor.
It is without doubt that there are those who seek to control the government, but incompetence can not be controlled. Nor can millions of armed and hungry people.

And now: silver broke over $41 today! Whee, aint this fun? Reminds me of the time I got on the roller coaster at the fair and the guy operating it was drunk as a skunk- that was an incredible ride! The end of the ride wasn’t quite as much fun, but most of us survived…Unfortunately the fat girl sitting next to me fell off and landed on the operator. They didn’t make it (moment of reverent silence please….)
