It isn’t going to be an electromagnetic-Apocalypse, but certain parts of the globe may see a nice light show this evening:
Earth is bracing for a cosmic tsunami Tuesday night as tons of plasma from a massive solar flare head directly toward the planet.
The Sun’s surface erupted early Sunday morning, shooting a wall of ionized atoms directly at Earth, scientists say. It is expected to create a geomagnetic storm and a spectacular light show — and it could pose a threat to satellites in orbit, as well.
“This eruption is directed right at us and is expected to get here early in the day on Aug. 4,” said Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. “It’s the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time.”
While it shouldn’t disrupt our electrical power grid, you never know. If you happen to wake up tomorrow and your cell phone, car and coffee machine aren’t working, you’ll know why.
This “solar tsunami” may only be a prelude for what’s to come in the next couple of years. According to NASA, 2012 will see one of the most powerful solar maximum’s on record. In fact, the solar maximum should hit right around December 21, 2012, long rumored to be the Mayan end of the world. The sun’s activity will be at it’s strongest during the solar cycle. Along with this, the earth and sun will be aligned with the purported super-massive black hole at the center of the milky way galaxy, which may lead to even more magnetic, electrical and gravitational disturbances than the solar cycle predicts.
According to NASA, our power grid is already susceptible to a large scale power failure from solar flares as it is. Add the unknowns of the galactic alignment to the mix and perhaps we’ll have a lot more to worry about than just man-made SHTF catastrophes.
