Over the past few months, the US military has slowly fallen victim to mission creep in Syria. Earlier this month, the Air Force shot down a Syrian aircraft for the very first time, and in May our military bombed a Syrian Army convoy. Before that, President Trump ordered the bombing of a Syrian airfield after Assad was accused of dropping chemical weapons on civilians.

Forget for moment, about whether or not these actions were justified, because whatever the case may be, it’s obvious that we are growing a little more entangled in Syria’s Civil War as time goes on.

And the next incremental step towards war with the Syrian government appears to have been taken yesterday. On Monday night, the White House claimed that Syria was preparing for another chemical attack, before issuing this threat to Assad:

“The United States has identified potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime that would likely result in the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children,” a statement from the White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said. “The activities are similar to preparations the regime made before its April 4, 2017, chemical weapons attack.

“As we have previously stated, the United States is in Syria to eliminate the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. If, however, Mr. Assad conducts another mass murder attack using chemical weapons, he and his military will pay a heavy price.”

So what “preparations” are being made by the Syrian government? The White House won’t say. But if  what happened after the last chemical attack in Syria is any indication, they probably don’t have much evidence.

When the White House released evidence that supposedly proved that the Assad regime used chemical weapons in April, it turned out to be more of a vindication for Assad. It showed that the rebels were probably responsible for the attack. And at the time, it simply didn’t make sense for Assad to use chemical weapons. The attack occurred right after Rex Tillerson announced that the US would no longer be determined to push for regime change. So why would Assad antagonize the US, right after our government decided to leave him in power?

And that’s not the first time we’ve gone down this road. The Syrian chemical attack in 2013 also turned out to be a lie designed to drag the US into another war. That effort only failed because the American public was vehemently opposed to putting boots on the ground in Syria.

Clearly, something is going on here. There are forces at work, either among the rebel factions in Syria, or within the Deep State, that are trying to push our country into a full blown war with the Syrian government. If that happens, it could easily reverse the progress that government forces in the region have made against ISIS, and could bring us to blows with Russia.
