Ukraine’s ruler, Volodymyr Zelensky, is becoming increasingly belligerent over a lack of weapons supplies coming from his Western allies. The West has been pushing back against Zelensky’s demands, but he continues to wage a war with Russia, and he cannot possibly win.
While speaking to Ukrainian media on Friday, Zelensky claimed that Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems were unable to repel recent attacks, framing it as a failure of Western logistics and financing. “I know there will be no light because there are no missiles for defense,” he was quoted as saying, complaining that he keeps having to push the West for additional deliveries.
Over the summer, the United States went back and forth several times when it came to supplying Ukraine with weaponry. As its own stockpiles dwindled, and the U.S. continues to advance wars and conflicts in other regions, it became clear that it couldn’t continue to supply Kiev at the same rate that it had been.
After Suspending Weapons Shipments to Ukraine, Trump Pivots AGAIN
Zelensky’s complaints are a continuation of a pattern of public friction with Western backers. Last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he went on a tirade, accusing Europe of weakness and indecisiveness, prompting sharp rebukes.
According to a report by RT, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban labeled Zelensky “a man in a desperate position” who is “unable or unwilling” to end the conflict. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the Ukrainian leader’s remarks “unfair” and said he lacked gratitude for extensive European support.
Recently, Russia has taken advantage of Zelensky’s deteriorating relationship with his Western supplies and has intensified its long-range strikes against Ukraine’s military and dual-use infrastructure. This increase in strikes occurred in recent months, with Russia’s military stating that the attacks are in response to the Ukrainian military’s continued attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure and Kiev’s indiscriminate strikes on Russian civilians.
