Are people dumber than they used to be? Were previous generations mentally sharper than us? You may have suspected that people are getting stupider for quite some time, but now we actually have scientific evidence that this is the case. As you will read about below, average IQs are dropping all over the globe, SAT scores in the U.S. have been declining for decades, and scientists have even discovered that our brains have been getting smaller over time. So if it seems on some days like you woke up in the middle of the movie “Idiocracy”, you might not be too far off. Much of the stuff that they put in our junk food is not good for brain development, our education system is a total joke and most Americans are absolutely addicted to mindless entertainment. Fortunately we have a lot of technology that does much of our thinking for us these days, because if we had to depend on our own mental capabilities most of us would be in a tremendous amount of trouble.
Sadly, this appears to be a phenomenon that is happening all over the planet. As a recent Daily Mail article explained, IQ scores are falling in country after country…
Richard Lynn, a psychologist at the University of Ulster, calculated the decline in humans’ genetic potential.
He used data on average IQs around the world in 1950 and 2000 to discover that our collective intelligence has dropped by one IQ point.
Dr Lynn predicts that if this trend continues, we could lose another 1.3 IQ points by 2050.
One IQ point does not sound like a lot, but when you go back even further in time the declines become a lot more dramatic. For example, a psychology professor at the University of Amsterdam named Jan te Nijenhuis has calculated that we have lost a total of 14 IQ points on average since the Victorian Era.
And we don’t need a professor to tell us that this is true. Just go back and read some of the literature from that time period. Much of it is written at such a high level that I can barely even understand it.
There is other evidence that people are getting stupider as well. For instance, SAT scores in the United States have fallen significantly in recent years…
There appears to be a disturbing trend in American high schools. If we judge the quality of education by the scores that students get on their SATs, then it appears that things are getting worse. Since 2006, the overall average SAT score has fallen by 20 points, dropping from 1518 to 1498 in 2012. Scores are also down in each of the three categories tested, with reading dropping 9 points, mathematics dropping 4 points, and writing falling 9 points. It’s a fair bet that students aren’t becoming less intelligent, so exactly what is going on?
And this decline in SAT scores is not just limited to the past few years. As the following chart from Zero Hedge demonstrates, SAT scores have been declining in America for decades…
There are even some scientists that are convinced that this decline in the mental ability of humans goes back for thousands of years. Some blame genetic mutations for this decline, and others point to the fact that our brains have been getting smaller. For example, just check out what one study conducted at Cambridge University concluded…
An earlier study by Cambridge University found that mankind is shrinking in size significantly.
Experts say humans are past their peak and that modern-day people are 10 percent smaller and shorter than their hunter-gatherer ancestors.
And if that’s not depressing enough, our brains are also smaller.
The findings reverse perceived wisdom that humans have grown taller and larger, a belief which has grown from data on more recent physical development.
The decline, said scientists, has happened over the past 10,000 years. They blame agriculture, with restricted diets and urbanization compromising health and leading to the spread of disease.
Most of us today just assume that people are smarter than they ever have been before.
Most of us today look down on our ancestors and mock them for being so primitive.
But the truth is that if we had to go up head to head against them in mental challenges, we might find ourselves greatly humbled.
At the end of this article, I have posted an eighth grade exam from 1912 that was donated to the Bullitt County History Museum in Kentucky.
As you can see, it is far more difficult than anything that eighth grade students have to do today. In fact, most eighth grade students today are doing pretty good if they can point out the United States on a map of the world and can string a few sentences together.
I should know – for a short period of time I once taught eighth grade students.
So when I first came across the exam posted below, I was amazed at how difficult it was.
Could you pass such an exam?
I don’t know if I could.
But these are the kinds of questions that eighth grade students were expected to be able to answer back in 1912…
-Through which waters would a vessel pass in going from England through the Suez Canal to Manila?
-How does the liver compare in size with other glands in the human body?
-How long of a rope is required to reach from the top of a building 40 feet high to the ground 30 feet from the base of a building?
-Compare arteries and veins as to function. Where is the blood carried to be purified?
-During which wars were the following battles fought: Brandywine, Great Meadows, Lundy’s Lane, Antietam, Buena Vista?

Off topic question, I just got a 40′ Shipping container. Do I need to do anything to it to make it a faraday cage? It has no holes in it, just the doors on one side which will be closed. Thanks for the help.
@ COBeach. I would assume that metal containers that don’t have any openings to them should act well to protect against an EMP. Nothing should be touching any part of the container that someone wants to protect though as of course grounding is essential. People have said that even those metal tool sheds act well to protect against an EMP pulse as long as ALL the holes and openings are plugged up with some sort of metal. I have heard people even using balled up aluminum foil for this. Don’t know how well it would work. I have heard of many people using old microwave ovens as Faraday Cages also. EMP should be thought like radio waves that you are trying to block and shield against.

If such a test were used today, the students would have to be shown the constitution, and then would be forced to teach them that Obama is not eligible to even be president.

I’ve always found it humorous, that the idea that the human race is getting collectively more stupid, was proposed by humans who apparently think they are not part of the human race.

Normally the doors are sealed with rubber gaskets, therefore there is no continuous metal to metal contact which
is required for the faraday effect. Also the waves can easily penetrate the rubber and get through the gap. Use a FM radio to test the effectiveness. There should be no radio transmission. Perhaps to use crumpled foil to fill the gap after removing the gasket and totally cleaning the surfaces so there is total metal contact.

Folks if you have a smart phone and have a plan with lots of text messages look up “ips flare alert” in google. It’s an Austrailian site that will send warnings when a flare is larger than C8 in intensity. It needs a X9 or so to really a game changer. Less than that can cause harm, but it will probably be localized. Don’t get me wrong X3 and above can cause real issues, but IMO we need to approach X9. There are many factors, so me saying X9 is an educated guess.

If todays schools are not teaching these facts then asking modern students to take this test is a poor comparison. Students of 1900 would not do well on many modern exam questions. That said, the schools of 1900 taught for critical thinking skills and to prepare their students to interact in and understand this world. Our Students appear to be prepared to take orders without understanding them.
Also remember that todays students are being filled with aluminum and heavy metals from pesticides, herbicides and chem trails. These metals are known to decrease intelligence, harm the central nervous system and produce autism and dementia/alzheimers like symptoms.

I recently hired a 20 year old kid to help me on the ranch. He had no idea how to set a grab hook or choker hook on a chain. He had never uses a mattock or pulaski to chop bursh. After an hour he said he was really tired and his hands hurt. At three times his age I could out work him.

If I had Facebook, I certainly wouldn’t post unflattering photos of myself nor would I include negative aspects of my life.
Rather, I would only post photos and stories that made me look my best. In a way, I would exclude and include false things to the point of lying. Innocent enough? Not so, kids actually start believing their lies. I see twitter post (I have twitter but do not have followers nor do I tweet) that are total crap. Kids talking about money and girls running like hot and cold water. I know the kids and they are poor and ugly and do not have girls fawning.
No one ever calls bullshit. It is a facade and as long as the kid thinks he is fooling people, he feels like a winner. I have yet to make any sense of this phenomena.

It is all second nature to me due to having to start working when I was 7. Todays kids have no damn clue when you asked them to do what seems to be the simplest task (ex. broom, shovel, hammer, scraper, you name it). I don’t know how to deal. When I was in school back in the 60s and 70s, the BS I was taught was counter-balanced by some homeschooling. I had to learn critical thinking skills from my family because the so-called educators wouldn’t teach them. Even then, the goal was to have everyone dumbed-down. I am anathema to so many people out here because I don’t accept any indoctrination on any subject from any source. I know how to think for myself. while i do believe people for the most part are getting “dumber” i do not believe it is due to any genetic reasons, i.e. mutations and shrinking of the human brain. i believe it is because of our dependence on technology, programming television, an overly medicated public, and the filth that we are forced to eat and drink.

Mutations alone cannot account for the dumbing down in the last 100 years since mutations usually do nothing in the grand scheme in human genetics in such a short amount of time(3 or 4 generations).

At least in NC, there were only 11 grades until the mid-1940s. Seventh grade was the end of grammar school. Eight was the first year of high school. My mother, born in 1929, was told at the end of 11th grade that there were now 12 grades and she would have to go to school another year to take 12th grade English. She wouldn’t do it. My father finished grammar school at the end of the 7th grade and didn’t go to high school because of farm work.
My 7th and 8th grade English teacher made us diagram sentences until I was sick of it.
I was lucky enough to have some teachers who taught more than the required material. My second year algebra teacher taught us how to do square roots and cube roots manually on paper. He also read to us from an old math book about all the weights and measures that people used to be required to know. We also watched the Tigers in the World Series during class.

Speaking of diagraming sentences, those things were a killer for a kid that didn’t know what a vowel was until I was in the tenth grade, and the only thing I knew about roots was digging them. I have read somewhere that the King James Version was written at a fifth grade comprehension level, and the NIV is at an eighth grade comprehension level. So, other than a few old words to look up, the KJV is easier to read.
The problem most people have is that they don’t read the whole Bible. They just read parts of it and have an incomplete understanding. They say it’s too long, yet one of the Harry Potter books is a good bit longer, and kids in school read it through in a few days.

has anyone else noticed the sharp divide that has developed in much of the western world regarding our infant and child nutrition depending upon our social class in our lifetimes? I’m NOT talking about the quantity of food, but the quality. An elite baby will be fed wholly organic, scratch cooked meals for their formative years – one destined for the welfare line will be fed processed pap. Even if a working class minimum wage Mum does her utmost to feed her child well, in most cases she’ll never achieve same level of brain boosting nutrition as her betters. Even the water our children drink is likely to be more contaminated on average.
I’m sure a bunch of Mums on this site will leap all over what I’ve just said – but do they have the true ability to test the mercury level in every piece of fish that passes their child’s lips, can they ensure the water is non-fluoridated, or that their garden has not become accidentally GMO contaminated?
It’s not about wanting to do right by our kids, it’s about how our circumstances constrain us in comparison to those who have billions in the bank and thousands of acres of uncontaminated farmland at their disposal. Even the c’lebs are wise to this with their penchant for a farm in New Zealand or a ranch in Montana.
I’ve not touched on vaccines, meds, environmental pollutants or even bothered to discuss how education is tiered to your social class. The education provided by Eton is in no way similar to that provided by a state school. One is designed to train future leaders, the other an obedient comsumer slave.
It’s not just children’s critical thinking skills that are deliberately subdued via the education system, it’s their creativity,logicality, and observational & active listening skills that are also damped down. The artists, hunters and street rats amongst you will instinctively get what I’m saying here.
As an example lets take Obama’s famous quote “Hope and Change” – unless you instinctively asked ad actively sought the answer to the questions “hope for what/whom?” and “change into WHAT?” the very FIRST time you heard these word from him, then the indoctrination machine that comprises the educational & media systems has done it’s job.
Incidentally those individuals I personally know who did query “hope & change” have all been labelled in some way defective by the mainstream – e.g they all have a clinical diagnosis of asd, adhd, depression (is this just a natural response to being smart enough to see how bad really are)etc. In other words their objective opinions have been in someway formally diminished by our betters. I can’t prove anything scientifically but I would be interested in seeing a study iykwim – especially in regards to those the school system chooses to medicate into conformity.
Are we getting dumber? YES. The elite don’t even bother to pretend to hide their contempt for us anymore. In the UK 30,000 children are being snatched annually by the state from their parents, in the US the sexual assault on minors and grandma’s from the TSA is not only tolerated but accepted as normal. Only societies that are as dumb as rocks would accept this kind of nonsense. Given that democracy is essentially mob rule, we have to assume that the mob is stupid if we make assumption the mob performs to the lowest common denominator.

I would like to point out that IQ and test-taking ability do not go hand in hand. Just because I have a high IQ does not mean I could pass the test that was posted without studying for it, first.
Likewise, a high IQ does not mean someone is street smart. Lots of very intelligent people (particularly most of the Ph. D.’s I’ve met) have a very hard time with common sense things.
As for the size of people…. well, that’s not entirely accurate, either. Sure, Cro magnons were some rather large people (they ate a lot of meat and had plenty of physical exercise, so they were as big as everything else tended to be during the last Ice Age… mammoths, anyone?), but we as a species, and in particularly, we as Americans, ARE larger these days than, say, people who came here aboard the Mayflower. I’ve been on the Mayflower II (the replica of the Pilgrim’s ship), and it’s TINY, because the people were smaller. We may not like our overly processed foods right now, but we get FAR better nutrition than most people over the past couple milennia have gotten, and as a result, we tend to be larger, on average.
As for *why* we’re getting dumber: Yes, our educational system is awful and getting worse. And yes, our bread and circuses (crappy food choices and reality TV) are leaving a decidely unhealthy mark on us. But there’s also fluoride to consider. Yes, it gives us great teeth, but it’s also lowering our IQ.

The writer seems to be confused about the difference between being smart and being intelligent. Being smart is all about your brain’s store of knowledge. Intelligence is the horsepower that puts the knowledge to use.
The SAT is sometimes used as a gauge of intelligence, but prior knowledge and being good at test-taking counts for a whole lot. For an example, there might be an analogy question, such as Achilles’ : heel is to Pandora’s : _______. No matter how good you are at analogies or how high your IQ is, if you don’t happen to know the story about Pandora’s box, you can’t answer correctly. On the other hand, there are math questions that you can get the correct answer for without knowing the math. When I took the SAT back in 1969 or 1970, there were questions that involved calculus. At the time, calculus in my area was not taught in high school, just in college. So for some of the questions, I drew diagrams or tore and folded paper to figure out the best answer.
I know much more than my father ever knew, but he could push a cart load of groceries up to the checkout and have the exact change, including sales tax, counted out before the checker could ring it up. Many years ago, he was working on a construction project. He was just a regular worker, but he looked at the blueprints and saw that two parts weren’t going to be even with each other. He told the boss, and the boss said “You can’t read blueprints.” They built as instructed, and the two parts lacked six inches in being level with each other. It was a major job tearing down and rebuilding.
So, I might not get 100% on the 1912 test, but that doesn’t say a thing about my IQ.

I dunno. I know some people who are good a taking test have lots of diplomas and test a high IQ. And they are ate up with the dumb ass. my little grandkids are very smart. They can program the tv cell phone and work all kinds of gadgets that I cant. However watch Jay Leno do the Jaywalking and those people sure seem dumb. There is a guy has a portable sawmill and his 12 year old son operates it. Looks at a log and can tell you what size and how many boards it will saw out! Another guy I know couldn’t finish high school. Yet He trains dogs & horses. he even raised & trained a yoke of oxen. Has a big holstein steer that he rides. He can work cattle with that steer and never cause any commotion. the cows aint afraid of another cow. He never wants for work he has a waiting list. There are dumb (not book smart) people who are good at music. I think when it comes to politicians those who are elected are doing exactly what those who voted them in wanted. folks have learned to vote themselves money from the public coffers. Read “Bell Curve”. It is dry and geared to academics and controversial. The author compares IQ and race intelligence, among other variables. Aside from race related facts, the main point exposes genetics and intelligence.
Physical characteristics revert to the norm. Meaning if two tall people have kids, often the kids height will likely be toward the normal height. One variable that does not normalize…intelligence. Two idiots will always have a idiot. Two bright people will always have a bright offspring. (Absent defect or environmental factors).
In short, if low functioning people litter the world with idiots and high functioning people have fewer kids, we will be a country of brave heart types in a few generations. ( that’s a joke). It lends to reason that high functioning people have fewer kids as a whole.

Ive slept on it and I really don’t think the ratio of dumb to smart folks has increased. Shure there are more dumb stupid folks because there are a lot more folks. I think there are fewer folks with Know How & Self Reliance. Many here just purchase the advertised prepping items. I wanted a hand pump to pump water. one that could be wind, human or animal powered. I could have just purchased a flow jak or other advertised mass produced unit. I went and bought $75 worth of plastic pipe & couplings. made my own check valves and now have a working water pump. Its actually not a pump but a water ram. Next is to build a windmill. That’s what happened to the USA folk became complaceient. They stopped doing for themselves. The stopped making inventing & producing. We got lazy and took the easy path.
There are a few online dictionaries that roll with stupider. Not webster’s dictionary. People have been eating GMO foods since what the 80’s? So our nutritional building blocks have been hoodwinked.
