Dear fellows, I want to tell a little story of this last week.

My son had a rash in his little armpits and other parts. So his mom took him to the doctor, within walking distance from our subdivision (our SUV is still busted). After the subsequent blood test (according to my wife it was a real spectacle. He is a strong kid and a task force between my wife, the doctor and a nurse was needed to get the blood sample…well at least we know he is able to defend himself.) The lab result (freaking expensive because the reactants are scarce) was salmonella.

I started to worry a lot, as it is logical. That was Thursday. I got immediately into fast-forward mode, and found the money, while I was extremely concerned about the availability of the needed antibiotics. My wife woke up early, and with a neighbor in his car went with the kiddo to the pharmacy. After visiting two pharmacies with negative results, they headed up to a state-owned pharmacy next to the state hospital, controlled by Cubans or party members, who betray the hospital personnel that dares to report malnutrition deaths or similar events. This is happening.

She was finally able to find the medicines on Saturday morning, at a really inflated price, but the neighbor works for an official government, with a flash of his badge she could buy them without the employees giving it a second look.

I emailed a copy of the doctor’s report to Daisy, so she can confirm my history for those who feel the need to do so.

To me, this was a major achievement under the actual circumstances. I used some of the money from your donations, to exchange it for the needed Bolivares to buy the medications, but the important thing to note here is that they were found. And that is not easy in this country.

Forgotten diseases are returning

Recent reports from these last few days have been, for someone who understands the importance of the endemic diseases that had been under control, spreading quickly.

I am talking about serious stuff: Tuberculosis, Diptheria, Leishmaniasis. There have been adults and children who died because of these things. The diseases themselves, under normal conditions can be healed. But without the appropriate medications and proper nutrition, they become deadly.

Leishmaniasis

One of the worst endemic diseases that has been reported (this information arrived via social networking from confirmed, known sources) is Leishmaniasis. This is a parasite to which you should pay a lot of attention. With the lack of proper balanced feeding, a person’s natural defenses get lower, and it is much easier for them to get sick.

Traditionally there were programs all over the country to fumigate and keep the vectors under control. However, the last fumigation was a long time ago and this allowed the vectors to spread themselves again, reaching densely populated areas, and now without any modern medication to contain it.

Rodents, canines, are affected too. The main transmission vector is the mosquito, and their first manifestation is a skin lesion in the place of the bite. There are several forms of the disease, and most of them are deadly. This is a disease associated with the malnourishment, population displacement, poor living conditions, weak immune systems, and a general lack of resources. This is the exact scenario we have been living through and the description of an SHTF situation. It affects the liver and has permanent consequences if not treated properly.

Ehrlichiosis

Another disease we have present in our area is the Ehrlichiosis, a tropical variation of Lyme disease. Fortunately, we could find the antibiotics for this as well, but of course at incredible prices. Thankfully with a 2nd income, it could be obtained. My wife got better after weeks of feeling sick once we knew what it was.

In a funny side note, we had to go to a veterinary lab, as it was the only one in town that was able to do such testing. This gave me floor for a LOT of imaginative, creative jokes to her. Lol.

We used the recipes to buy some extra blisters packs of medication, just in case, for our medicine box will be donated once the family can come with me.

Tuberculosis

Another disease that had an incredible increase is tuberculosis. It is known that tuberculosis is linked to malnutrition (source) and it is becoming increasingly widespread in Venezuela. As it is more or less known,  improper nutrition is the main cause of this once-eradicated sickness in Venezuela. The cases were very few, and widely spread, mainly among drug addicts, homeless people, or even patients of psychiatric hospitals. This is a bacteria, and the infection damage is located especially in lungs.

A weakened immune system makes it easy for the disease to take hold. There are a lot of ways to prevent our defenses from getting too low, but proper nutrition is the best prevention. Whole foods, of course, provide more leverage to our immune system than processed foods.

Mosquito-transmitted diseases

Another important and significant increase has been in the mosquito-transmitted diseases. With the main insecticides factories financially strangled, their production is scarce, and the well-known government mafia takes over whatever they can.

Finding a can of insecticide is not easy. This is another item that should be stockpiled. It is not going to lose efficiency. I could afford to buy a fumigation machine, able to provide a clouding of droplets with a very small size, the needed size to float in the air for hours (I don´t remember how many microns, I think about 0.5 or so). It is useful for house fumigation as well as greenhouse or crops, despite being electrical. It does not use a heating element, so it is much more simple to maintain and fix, and this allows to use a wider variety of insecticides that do not need to be burned to remain as a cloud for keeping their effectiveness.

Salmonella

Our recent experience with salmonella last week opened our eyes to how bad sanitation conditions have become. Of course, this is to be expected. There are no cleaning products at affordable prices, and therefore the hygiene decreases significantly, and salmonella is a disease very closely linked to hygiene.

According to my research for this article, salmonella can be transmitted by infected hens, even before teggshellell is formed, and this seemed to us something very likely because the chicken farmers can’t afford the mandatory vaccines or medications for the animals.

Another salmonella infection source is raw poultry. We noticed that in the place we buy our fresh poultry and cheese, these are stored in the same freezer. This is not what we could call ideally sanitary, but it is our first time facing such an illness.

According to our doctor, that same day there were 2 other cases of salmonella before our son. This is alarming, to me. Never had seen even one case, except very rare instances, and suddenly three persons in a row in a doctor’s office?

This is highly suspicious, at a minimum.

What can we do given that we are not regular people but preppers?

Let’s see.

My first thought is, given that the readers are spread worldwide, is research what diseases are endemic to your area. Statiscally speaking, the probability of picking up a disease that is not typical of your region should be low.

Once the hazard your group maybe exposed to is identified, then proceed with the neutralization measures by finding out which medications would be needed if the normal supply is no longer available.

Some prepper-friendly doctor could extend the needed prescriptions, and your stashed medicines would be one of the stuff that should be already in your secluded BOL, under the proper conditions. [Alternatively, if you can’t get those, look for herbal remedies you can create yourself – this book is a reference every prepper should own ~ Daisy]

Given what we have experienced, I would not try to save money on this issue. It will be worth every penny if you need it. Oh, and I don’t work or have any relationship with any medical company other than swallowing their stuff from time to time if needed.

This said, I would calculate, depending on the medical history of the family (for example, urinary infections, bacterial stomach infections like amoebas in my case) and the endemic disease information, then go about stockpiling two complete treatments a year, for each family member.

Other possible treatments could be those for botulism. Some antidote against this toxin should be stockpiled. This is very serious, and the probability of appearing is not because it is endemic, but because of things like decomposing canned food.

Skin burn ointments and other common medications would be needed, too. Our scarcity began about 4 years ago, but mostly because of the inflation. If you have the money, you can find anything you need, even under these conditions.

Therefore, I strongly suggest you find a good, suitable way, optimized for your particular conditions to store wealth.

This is worst case scenario and you may adjust it to your own medical knowledge and location. It would be great to receive comments from people in the know.

Thank you.

I give special thanks to those who have prayed for my family, because your prayers, my fellow preppers, really worked.

I don´t have words to describe how grateful I am for all of you.

We faced this issue, came through the other side almost unharmed, knowing this could have become serious if the medicine were not found, and I am sure your prayers for us were heard…

I don’t have words to thank you. God Bless you all, people!

What are you Venezualans doing to fix your country besides begging for donations?

  3. Venezuela is seeing the return of forgotten diseases. Well, I’ve got news for you. So, is the USA.

Immigration invasion and multiculturalism is killing us.

    • Nailbanger says:

Yep, locally we have had a few cases of TB in schools or restaurants, all traced back to recent immigrants, the most troubling was the TB case in a cafeteria worker at an elementary school on Oahu, all were very hushed up as the state is democrat run and they dont want anyone to know the truth about their failed policies

    • Ron Ahrens says:

All part of the Luciferian psychopaths “Great Plan”, which is why you always hear the Luciferian psychopath puppet pussy grabber Donald Trump saying “great, great, great”…”everything is great”…”this person is great”…”this Corporation from hell is great”..”Rex Tillerson is great, great, great”(and then the pussy grabber fires him in a tweet)…”Genocidal Murderous Monsanto Mike Pompeo is great, great, great”…just great, great, great, great, great repeated over and over and over again, so the dumbed down soda sucking GMO gobbling toxic dump American cowards understand they are right in the middle and WILLING PARTICIPANTS in the Luciferian psychopaths “GREAT PLAN”…too bad for the Luciferian psychopath puppet Donald Trump, because our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has a GREATER PLAN than the monsters who control the vice peddling pussy grabbing genocide supporting THIEF.

I have no doubt that their refugees will be coming to US shores. “I’ll take a Venezuelan with a side order of cholera please”.

  5. China has us by the balls.

Forget Russia. It’s China that threatens us. China has the rare earth metals we use in our cell phones. Which is why Apple moved to China. Unemployment is bad but what is worse, National Security is in the hands of our “former” enemy Communist China.

China has the rare earth elements we need for our military weapons. Our government is not working to adequately deal with this. Gordon MacDonald videos on YouTube explain and educate. Sarge may not have time to learn about Thorium replacing Uranium for safer more affordable nuclear energy. But, I find the subject fascinating.

And I’m getting my knowledge up and understanding the periodic table of the elements. It is not a waste of time. It makes the study of biochemistry easier if you are familiar with general chemistry.

Did you know that the young tall blond men who were in the SS in Germany were doctors. They were doctors. They were Germany’s brightest young men. Most of them died after the war while being detained as enemy combatants, a redesignation of prisoners of war.

_ What will happen to our soldiers if the Chinese turn on us?

    _

    • Archivist says:

We have the rare earth metals as well, but the environmentalists have stopped all our own mining and processing. Chromium is about the only material that hasn’t been mined commercially in the US. Many years ago, the top 100 commercially mined minerals were all found in NC. So China isn’t the problem.

      • Plan twice, prep once says:

        Yes, Archivist
The US has lots of rare earths, but the Obama influenced EPA bans their mining. This is true.

B from CA, The word is the Chinese and Russians have been selling substandard steel to the US for years to weaken our military. If you buy grade 6 tool steel, both the Russians and Chinese have been adulterating it. In a word its crap.

The foot Bridge failure in Florida is a perfect example of what happens when substandard steel or on concrete are used in a project. Obama authorized bad steel to be used on military equipment, and elsewhere. Our military is compromised as a result of Obama’s treason.

  9. Marie in Upstate says:

Thanks Daisy for a great article.

I am stocking up on additional bug sprays/insecticides here, as they were an oversight on my part. I currently have 2 different spray types for the types of buggers around here in rural upstate NY, but since most shtf scenarios will likely result in infestations like we’ve never before seen I’ll load up. Also good for bartering as well. I’ll add more to my preps pronto.

As an aside here, I have tons of dried cranberries in my preps. I check the expiration date on the bag to make sure it’s pretty far out. If you eat a handful of cranberries every few days, maybe 2-3x per week (I put them in my oatmeal) it’s pretty hard to get a Urinary Tract Infection.

There’s a substance in the cranberries that prevents the specific bacteria that causes UTI’s to stick to the urinary tract. Therefore the infection can’t take hold, assuming you eat the cranberries often enough, and not the cranberry sauce in the can. Fresh or dried, as well as the juice are best for preventing UTI’s. I rotate them in my stock as once they are more than a few months past the expiry date they aren’t nearly as potent and effective.

The other thing about a UTI is that it’s the most common cause of Sepsis, especially if the UTI goes unnoticed and therefore untreated, which is very dangerous. Left untreated, even for a few days, Sepsis will surely spread and could be fatal. People have died from Sepsis that started from a UTI (or pneumonia) that they didn’t know they had, and by the time they found out they already had Sepsis and a dangerously high fever.

Add cranberries to your diet as a UTI preventative, and stock up on dried cranberries in your preps.

  10. Marie in Upstate says:

I have dozens of $1.89 gallon jugs of cheap white distilled vinegar in my preps. It kills 99% of bacteria, viruses and germs. It’s not as powerful or effective as bleach, but at least it isn’t toxic. The bad pukey vinegar smell dissipates within a minute or two.

I would never consume this cheapy vinegar, such as use it in my salad, but I do use it to disinfect surfaces, clean vegetables and fruits, and also to prevent mold wherever mold might grow, like damp and dark spaces. It doesn’t kill mold but a little spray (one part water, two parts vinegar) does prevent it from growing.

The one downside is that the gallon jugs take up a lot of room in my preps even though I have 4 jugs to a box and the boxes neatly stocked.

Anyway, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

    • fishandmud says:

Marie : When I started prepping 20 + years ago I stored my beans and rice in 1 gallon apple juice jugs because the plastic was thicker than most. 10 years or so ago I discovered 1 gallon Gatorade jugs. They have thicker plastic and are rectangle, not round. I had the perfect boxes. They held exactly 4 1 gallon round jugs with a hole load of wasted space. Now those same boxes hold 6 1 gallon Gatorade jugs with very little wasted space. I fill the wasted space with bars of soap. I also get the little individual plastic juice bottles and after a thorough cleaning they hold 1 serving of dried beans and rice. Great for barter or for a 1 – 2 day travel to get supplies. Anyways, put a hand warmer in the bottom of the jug, fill half full with your prep, drop in 1 more hand warmer, fill to the top and put the lid on tight. Will last forever as far as I know. I have some over 20 years old now. Try the new jugs and save more preps in less space. Good luck.

  13. Jonny V says:

I like Jose’s articles. Venezuela wasn’t that far off the American standard of living when their voters and politicians decided to go off the rails. The knowledge being passed on here is very valuable as the same things are virtually certain to happen to the USA when our (financial) house of cards collapses.

  14. beccabecker says:

Live an hour from Joplin, MO and started prepping after the tornado. Living in the middle of nowhere (everything worth while is an hour in any direction) I buy in bulk. I’m a pharmacist so I have a pretty good stock for shtf (all legally acquired of course – no I can’t just take what I want). And I buy concentrated eco-friendly household products online because all we have around here is Walmart. Yeah, I could make my own, but I wanted a safer bug spray that didn’t turn my lips numb after 5 minutes of applying. And sunscreen that didn’t disintegrate plastic… but you can’t really stock up on that, starts to lose potency after 1 year. Maybe stock good old zinc oxide like back in the day. But concentrated is the way to go – less space to take up!

  15. The sand fly is the major carrier of leishmaniasis. An Article in “Parasitology” (March 2018) reports on a new technique of treating the cutaneous(skin) form of it. The technique is to apply radiofrequency heat with an instrument called a Thermomed 1.8. Supposedly, a single application gets rid of the rash with minimal toxic effects. The article was reported on http://www.pubmed.gov which is maintained by a Federal bureau, the National Institute of Health. There was also an article in the journal “Molecules” (August 2015) reporting on work in Germany on traditional herbal remedies for it. The ones mentioned as having “high activity” were salvia, valeriana, hypericum, silybum, amica, and curcuma. Salvia is in sage. Silybum is in milk thistle. Curcuma is in turmeric. Just because these things are reported in medical journals doesn’t mean they’re true but they are a place to start. Also, the herbs mentioned are ones known in Europe;there are probably local ones that are known as well. I’ve used milk thistle, sage, and turmeric for general health but I’ve no medical experience. Good luck!

  16. Phoenix says:

There are no vaccines for salmonella. Chickens only get it when their living conditions become too cramped and too dirty – this is why it’s mainly an issue in the industrial farming world yet exceptionally rare in the backyard poultry/small farmer world. Eggs which are washed after harvest and left to sit can become infected with salmonella, which is why grocery store eggs are coated in wax after being washed at the factory. Most hobby chicken-keepers and small farmers know better than to wash the eggs, even if they are dirty (as sometimes happens); mama hen puts a protective coating on the shell as the egg is being laid which acts as a barrier for pathogens. I have been raising chickens for over eleven years, and the only time my family ever got salmonella poisoning was when we ate some fish that was left out for a day but that my father figured was still good to eat (it wasn’t!) I – and many other chicken keepers – would really love it if the media would stop peddling the chicken/salmonella propaganda!

  17. Cook your food! Salmonella (and a whole slew of other bacteria) are killed by heat! My guess is that about 20 minutes of boiling should do the job.

  18. Martus says:

Laugh now idiots or learn now peppers because what happened to Venezuela will happen globally.

Those that grow the food you eat have made it pretty plain to you what they want through their speeches on human population reduction and also written it in the Georgia stones:

Maintain the population at 500 000 000 people, a reduction of 6.5 Billion.

The Bible in Revelation tells us people will work a full day for less then a kilo of wheat in the end times.

Revelation 6:6 New International Reader’s Version (NIRV)
6 Next, I heard what sounded like a voice coming from among the four living creatures. It said, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s pay. And six pounds of barley for a day’s pay. And leave the olive oil and the wine alone!”
