With negotiations behind the partial government shutdown showing no signs of a breakthrough, an estimated 800,000 government employees are set to miss a second paycheck on Friday.

Roughly 420,000 federal employees are working without pay, while around 380,000 have been furloughed amid the longest shutdown in US history, according to CNBC.

While the actual economic impacts are thus far thought to be limited, specific companies and industries are feeling the effects.

Commercial airlines, for example, are facing slower demand as airports struggle with understaffed security checkpoints, are losing revenue. Last week, Delta said it had lost $25 million in revenue on account of the shutdown.

The hit to the overall gross domestic product in the first quarter is also difficult to quantify. Economists have come up with a range of numbers, but they agree that the longer the shutdown goes on, the wider the damage to economic growth. –CNBC

Hundreds of IRS employees, meanwhile, will probably skip work as part of a coordinated protest which takes advantage of a provision which allows them to stay home if they suffer a “hardship,” according to the Washington Post. With IRS offices headed into their busiest time of the year, the the shutdown may result in delayed refunds and frustrating wait times, despite President Trump’s promise not to delay payments.

I have fielded no less than 30 to 40 calls, emails or text messages about hardship requests from employees daily since Thursday,” said Shannon Ellis, President of the National Treasury Employees Union.

The Trump administration last week ordered at least 30,000 IRS workers back to their offices, where they have been working to process refunds without pay. It was one of the biggest steps the government has taken to mitigate the shutdown’s impact on Americans’ lives.

But IRS employees across the country — some in coordinated protest, others out of financial necessity — won’t be clocking in, according to Tony Reardon, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, and several local union officials. The work action is widespread and includes employees from a processing center in Ogden, Utah, to the Brookhaven campus on New York’s Long Island. –Washington Post

Prospects for reopening the government were grim on Tuesday after President Trump’s latest proposal to end the impasse (which outraged immigration hard-liners), was immediately rejected by Democrats. His plan, which includes funding for most public agencies, promises to DACA recipients, and of course – funding for his wall, is headed for a vote this week in the Senate where it is anticipated to fail.

Trump maintains that he won’t sign any bill that does not fund the long-promised border wall.

Stretched workers are struggling

According to University of Michigan economist Michael Gelman and four colleagues, many furloughed federal workers will be forced to delay paying the mortgage or credit card payments.

The study looked at the effects of the 2013 government shutdown on nearly 7,000 federal workers – both those affected by the shutdown and not – along with more than 90,000 non-federal workers.

The researchers found that the median worker in the study had only enough cash or other liquid assets to cover just eight days of their average household spending. That cushion fell to just five days of spending just before payday. The bottom third of the group had, on average, a combined checking and savings account balance of zero on the day before their paycheck arrived. –CNBC

“Even if there are penalties or costs, late payment of a mortgage is a source of credit that is available without the burden of applying for credit,” write the authors.

For the most part, effected federal workers didn’t use credit cards to make up for their lost wages in 2013 – they simply postponed payments on outstanding debt. That said, the 2013 shutdown only lasted two weeks, while workers in the current shutdown will miss their second pay cycle – forcing many who have missed credit payments to face late fees.

Furloughed IRS tax examiner Will Kohler of Covington, Kentucky has run into an entirely different type of problem during the shutdown; his application for unemployment benefits is in limbo because the Treasury Department responsible for verifying his claim is closed thanks to the shutdown.

Kohler, who makes $38,000 a year, said many co-workers are in the same predicament. Not a single one has been approved for unemployment, he said. Kohler said workers like him are stuck in a difficult position, in part because they are restricted by government ethics rules from getting many kinds of outside work. –CNBC

“When it gets to a point where government employees have to go to a food bank, this is not the America that I grew up in,” said Kohler. “It’s mind-boggling. It really is.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for cutting the size of government and this is a good time to do it. I want every government employee to be in fear of losing their jobs if they don’t perform to the highest standards.

  3. The Deplorable Renegade says:

Maranatha, good point. If I can’t have an employee who will show up on time and do what I require then I’ll just do without him/her. People like you just described are not worth having. As long as such people have other options like getting on the programs they don’t really care how they survive.

  4. Stuart says:

Notice they don’t break a sweat when the private sector has hardships (generally CAUSED by the public sector) but they get apoplexy when it affects them.
Personally, I haven’t noticed the lack of public “workers” in my day to day business life. Might be a lesson there somewhere.

  5. TeXMom66 says:

I was a govt employee years ago after retiring from the military. I saw the fraud, waste, and abuse, everyday. We would spend money on computers we didn’t need, new desks when the old ones were just fine, etc, so much more that was just plain and simple waste. Just so we would be able to keep that amount of money in the budget for the next year. That is one of the reasons I left. The money was great but it made me sick to see how many people just didn’t deserve that kind of pay. To include me. So happy to be away from that environment.

  6. Maranatha says:

I believe that some civil servants are GREAT! We need some naturalists who teach people about ancestral skills, how nature is all interconnected, how to identify trees and birds, etc.

We need intelligent management of the National Forests so they don’t start wildfires.

We need people to work in all kinds of elements that might not show a profit in dollars, but a huge profit in protecting the Land.

But what happened was, free trade killed jobs so politicians FREAKED OUT and started hiring progressively more and more government workers. That is not sustainable.

I saw government workers all with computers that had the first tv tuners built in, and watching picture in a picture while doing paperwork. Come on. It was things like that in the nineties that pointed to colossal waste.

    • Big John says:

Naturalists- really? Since when has government management of forests prevented fires? If you want to protect the land let individuals live on their own land and manage it for the benefit of them and their children. Then you’ll see good management. Free trade never kills jobs. Protected big business and banks kill jobs. Government regulations kill jobs.

      • Maranatha says:

Those naturalists cost almost nothing in the grand scheme of things and prepping is about the transmission and communication of ancestral skills!

Are you really suggesting zero management of the national forests??? You think zero management would be better for fire management???

FREE TRADE ISN’T FREE! It annihilated the American Middle Class. It wiped out industrial jobs that were propping up the entire US economy. Do you realize that it was not uncommon in the 1990 for a craftsman to make $45,000 base pay with great benefits plus $15,000 in overtime? And that a wife could earn $35,000-45,000 additionally as a professional? That’s at least $80,000 to $105,000 per year.

To make that today would be impossible. That is equivalent after inflation to $157,760-207,060 per year!

The average American household income is about $48,000 after free trade.

        Look at the difference!

        • Maranatha says:

Why is this basic math so difficult for people to process?

Free Trade is about the dumbest idea that you end good paying American jobs and give them to poor Chinese and then buy Chinese goods while destroying the very people who buy
          them.

          • Maranatha says:

After Free Trade, a husband and wife together in 2019 make LESS than a single guy made in 1990. If I included benefits, they make WAY LESS as healthcare was better and less expensive by far and there were all kinds of benefits that disappeared after Free Trade.

FREE TRADE DESTROYED THE MIDDLE CLASS.

Those middle class people in 1990 had twice the income so they invested it and bought consumer items that ended up bolstering the US economy in every possible way.

  7. Maranatha says:

In Congress, some senator could care less what an individual calls in to bellyache about. The senator has staff and they tabulate how many are for and against a bill and why. They get a bullet point assessment and then weigh that versus political favors, lobbyists, and pork to bring home to their state.

Some these staff handle your calls, email, letters, and do other things like learn who in the state has made a noteworthy contribution so they can use that for political gain, or see who needs to be sponsored to go to a military academy, or head up whatever political issue will cause future issues so the senator doesn’t paint the selves in a corner.

Senators have stopped representing the People and just are grotesque creatures representing business and political action committees who are the most shrill and who can mess up their gravytrain.

  8. Maranatha says:

Teams of lawyers and paralegals read the congressional bills, not the senators. So if these staff are for the bills or hate the bills, they will block passage of be for the passage, and the senator relies on their good judgement.

Can you see any problems with hundreds or thousands of pages, handled by selfish staff, then causing major issues for ordinary citizens???

  9. TRUMP needs to sign an executive order that any govt employee that doesn’t show up for work will be terminated. No pension. No backpay.
He’s already given in by granting the “dreamers” another 3 years.
He needs to sign an executive order to have ALL illegals deported. And any employer that hires them, will be indicted for “aiding & abetting” criminal felons.
He needs to give the middle finger to the democrats.!!!!

I’ll bet not one of the dimms has read it.

        • Anonymous says:

Except that he didn’t write the book. Hell, he didn’t even read. it. He conversed with Tony Schwartz over the course of a year and threw some quotes out there and Tony expanded on them. Tony wrote The Art of the Deal.

        • Plan twice, prep once says:

Before Trump you never heard the term deal in politics. They all act like they hate Trump, but he has affected the future of world politics more than anyone knows, and they are all trying to emulate D. J. Trump.

Now, every world leader speaks of “making the deal”!

As far as this shutdown, in early February the EBT system runs out of money. We are still legally operating under the financial state of emergency initiated by Obama, if Polosi doesn’t bend and Trump uses executive power under the state of emergency to save the poor from hunger, Trump will come out on top. Remember almost 80% of illegals are getting direct federal government aid, and Pelosi is about to make them all go hungry. Under the existing state of emergency, Trump doesn’t need Pelosi to help these people, it can be done by presidential authority alone. Timing is everything. Let a few riots break out, and an exasperated Trump can wait no more…… Optics!

I got extra popcorn for this show. I bought the SHTF size container at BJ’s last week.

Hot tip for my fellow preppers, “Flavacol” is a flavored salt for popcorn, put a 1/4 tsp with a tblsp of oil, with a 1/3 cup of popcorn seeds, cook as usual, and your popcorn will taste like movie theater popcorn. Amazon carries it. It is the secret ingredient of great popcorn.

    • TheGuy says:

Might as well at this point.

Mark my words, this goes on much longer + 25% tariff = recession the likes of which you’ve never seen.

Which… pretty much I kind of knew it going in. I mean a recession was always baked in right about now but this is going to be uuuge.

If it gets into the “collective memory” that you can’t trust a .gov paycheck or bennies, watch the velocity of money stall. I mean INDIVIDUALS here and there know this, but “the group” doesn’t seem to get it. Well, they’re about to, or they’re way stupider than I ever imagined.

  10. If the IRS workers skip work, then america needs to skip paying taxes. See how fast the government opens back up…

  11. LMNOP says:

So government employees are complaining that they’ve missed ONE paycheck (set to miss a 2nd check this Friday), and have been “reduced” to relying on food banks, free restaurant meals, rationing their medications, and missing mortgages and rent payments?
    Seriously????
Those of us who do not work for the government and are paid at a substantially lower rate for the same types of jobs, those of us in the private sector who are not given generous health and retirement benefits (paid for by the American taxpayer), and those of us not working for the government who aren’t are given lavish perks, must struggle with these issues every day.

Most of us learn to live within our means and try to put away a little money for emergency situations.
Sometimes credit cards must be relied on to get by, but All of us not being paid would find other jobs in order to feed our families and pay our bills, and NONE of us would be paid retroactively for the work we missed while on “furlough.”

Having temporarily worked for a federal agency, I saw things that no one in the private sector would or could have possibly tolerated and remained in business, i.e., rampant waste, theft of government property, lazy and/or incompetent employees and management, endless meetings
that were usually catered, sloth, etc.

  12. Frank Thoughts says:

If it is like Canada, then the federal civil servants earn on average a six figure salary plus benefits. As for the employees, they tend to be a free person’s nightmare of every politically correct group: offices filled with gays, minority women and the bane of all government offices, the fat black women who are always going on sick leave for their health problems ( diabetes, joint pain, back pain etc.).

Keep them furloughed and then fire them like the did with the air traffic controllers in the 80s.

As bad as federal civil servants are, go check out the UN for some hardcore money wasting, criminality and affirmative action hires. It is pretty well all Africans and Muslims, all paid for by US tax dollars. And the U.N. has adopted the “best practices” of African governments, with nepotism, money laundering, corruption, wasteful travel, and rampant child and sex abuse.

The second in command of the UN is a Nigerian Muslim who is embroiled various corruption scandals.

Trump needs to use this moment to drain the government swamps and make the charity cases go get real jobs and earn their keep.

    • Maranatha says:

It’s an ugly truth what happens to women when a country implodes and they cannot do their old occupation as what they did is essentially useless.

That then turns to others who are equally at risk from falling into the hands of pimps who prey upon them.

If you disbelieve this, then look at places like Venezuala now. Look at Japan postwar in 1946. Look at Bosnia during the war. Look at Mexico now and what occurs along the Southern border of the USA with trapped illegal alien women.

      • Maranatha says:

        HOW IT BEGINS

A lost soul is homeless and a seemingly kindly older person provides them housing and food…but with conditions of intimacy. Drug use follows. Then it goes downhill with violence and becomes a job under threat.

This happens every day in the urban areas of America.

  14. TheGuy says:

You know what this will change at this point?

    The velocity of money.

    For years.

    Think about it.

Everyone getting caught with no way to pay mortgage or credit cards, or everyone who knows someone in this position, are now going to stockpile cash like it’s going out of business.

… and then it will go out of business. Radically lower monetary spend rates = recession.

  15. The Deplorable Renegade says:

DNJ, good points but the way you said it reminds me of Ron.

  16. Trump needs to give the middle finger to Pelozi and have the state of the union address from the oval office. The American people don’t need to witness another dog and pony spectacle of pompous idiots & traitors spending all their time clapping. Why do we need to see all these Ahole senators & reps anyway!!!!!

I have had it with rogue Democrats.

  18. Maranatha says:

POTUS has the authority to give the SOTU address anywhere he chooses including Nancy Pelosi’s backyard if he wants. If you really think otherwise, you are extremely naive.

That’ll be the day when a rogue politician thinks they have more power that the Commander in Chief of the US Military.

Nancy Pelosi is officially impeding the Chief Executive of the USA from exercising Article 2 Section 3 of the US Constitution.

This is not only an impeachable offense. It is TREASON.

As she is the Speaker of the House, there is no way to impeach her so it would immediately fall to a military tribunal to judge her actions.

If Trump watches and records crimes committed then the full weight of the law can be used to stop it and insure it doesn’t happen again. Remember conspiracy often requires extra evidence and multiple offenses, a single instance does not imply a conspiracy.

I’ll continue to be patient, for a time.

            • Maranatha says:

              Second Verse
              They hunt no more for the possum and the coon;
On the meadow, the hill, and the shore,
              They sing no more by the glimmer of the moon;
On the bench by the old cabin door.
              The day goes by like a shadow o’er the heart;
With sorrow where all was delight.
              The time has come when the people have to part;
Then, my old Kentucky home, good night!

              Third Verse
              The head must bow and the back will have to bend;
              Wherever the people may go.
              A few more days and the trouble all will end;
In the field where the sugar canes grow.
              A few more days for to tote the weary load;
No matter, ‘twill never be light.
              A few more days till we totter on the road;
Then, my old Kentucky home, good night!

              Weep no more my lady.
              Oh! Weep no more today!
              We will sing one song
              For my old Kentucky home
For the old Kentucky home, far away.

              Stephen Foster

The state song of Kentucky is nostalgia twinged with inevitable sorrow and loss.

It’s going to personally cost patriots to set things right.

2009 I was unemployed for an entire year. Two kids in college and no one deferred my payments or gave me any grace periods. I learned and it won’t happen again. I don’t feel bad because No One felt sorry for me. Suck it up and learn from the situation. When I was laid off I was not going to get retro pay and my job back.

Here is my take…….the Republicans are missing a great opportunity to expose the Demrats for what they are.

The Republican PAC or Republican National Committee needs to fund a TV campaign depicting Pelosi, Schumer and BHO supporting the wall as they did in 2012, etc. ($40 Billion, remember). Put this ‘crisis’ on their backs where it firmly belongs. The public is unaware of their hypocrisy, bigotry. EXPOSE THEM as the true BAD guys. Do it now, immediately.

The House of Rep is supposed to be the Peoples House. They are putting their interests first instead of the people. They are not upholding their sworn duty to adhere to the Constitution and protect American sovereignty. Arrest them for treason.

My guess is that Hagmann was right and these old allegations are true about the Weiner laptop that was called “insurance”. It’s coming out and it’s taking the DNC and quite a few in Washington DC out for good.

It would almost certainly cause a declaration of martial law.

Trump needs that Ginsburg spot though. The Senate will use the nuclear option to avoid the last Kavanaugh debacle. Already the DNC is talking about impeaching Kavanaugh.

So glad to hear the crooks at the IRS are suffering. This is the most corrupt gov’t on Earth. Do not pay your taxes. For the gov’t to collect income taxes is illegal for 99% of Americans. I have not paid for 10 years. Read Super-Scam.com to find out how to unvolunteer. Watch Dave Champion and Irvin Shiff videos on Youtube. Do your research and learn about the TRUE meaning of the income tax. There is no law that requires the average American to pay a Income tax because it would be unconstitutional. Quit paying into these crooks. Several IRS agents have quit because they learned what the law really was and they had a moral conflict of interest.

My company laid off our entire division a year ago because we could not build as poorly or cheaply as our Chinese competition. Since I was overseas when it happened, there was no unemployment. Hell, my bank wouldn’t even provide a temporary increase to my credit card so I could get my family back to the States and secure employment. Still breathing, no thanks to Washington or their millions of useless minions.

Wow….such hate and vitriol for gov’t employees. Such contempt for gov’t in general. One wonders how many of the folks expressing such opinions actually benefit from “the gov’t” – such things as veterans benefits ( which are not a given – look at past history of wars – many soldiers in the past returned from conflict to ZERO benefits – no VA, and no VA hospitals ). If you are on Medicare, getting a tax break on a mortgage, have money in the bank insured by the fed, going to a national park, driving on a highway, getting mail, flying in an airliner, buying food for your family, or doing a thousand other mundane daily things, you are benefiting from some form of gov’t support or oversight. If one wishes to see what LACK of gov’t produces, witness Europe just post WW2 – not a pretty picture. But we know many of you are “jonesing” for a collapse so that you can prove how smart you were to put those cans of beans aside – but even we who have made those provisions know that someday even well stocked larders and ammo dumps run dry. Let’s hope that whatever passes for a “gov’t” post collapse resembles what we now enjoy ( even on furlough) , rather than post “collapse” Russia – hello, Vladimir Putin !

What if you were that homeless person, trying to scrub car windshields with newspapers, or the daylaborer, outside of Home Depot. What if I wasn’t interested in your service. Should they force you to pay for the unwanted service? Any kind of busywork imaginable? Any kind of bum?

I have heard cultural aliens, social undesirables, people with serious medical conditions, saying how they could have been useful; they were “earning” something, in their redundant, makebelieve position.

If a sane and healthy person applies for the same job, they cannot be useful (except to pay you).

In my experience, with these bums, they have a royal demeanor. You normals are paying tribute. You are the rejects, who cannot compete.

Your corrupt behavior brought alphabet soup agencies and those white news vans to our local city hall. Yet, I still hear you making the snide, entitled comments, over my fenceline.

Write your senators to have a no competency vote on Schumer. Write your representative to have a no competency vote on Pelosi. Each has proven incompetent in their position to pass a budget. Both have voted to fund a wall prior. They consider it immoral to protect you from human trafficking and drug crime.

I’m like Gary Franchi but way more conservative. You try to be an even tempered long-suffering Christian guy who is willing to witness about the wonderful love and grace of Jesus Christ. Then you lose your composure because you are literally fighting hellspawn minions of Lucifer. They are not just foolish misguided nonbelieving Democrats. Nope.

You can talk until you are blue in the face on politics. The ay to get through to young people is they innately love nature. You teach them ancestral skills and that intimately involves nature. And on their own, the mutual respect between student and teacher leads to sharing the Gospel.

That is how faithful brave Christians got abortion rates as low as they have been. The real way to persuade is mentorship and being considerate to ignorant people.

Real freedom comes from ancestral skills. That opens the door to share the Gospel where spiritual freedom from the bondage of sin takes place.
