Healthcare Providers In Canada Turn To CBD To Help Difficult Dementia Symptoms

Healthcare teams in Canada have turned to CBD (cannabidiol) oil to help patients relieve their difficult dementia symptoms. Some disruptive behaviors have become increasingly hard to treat, and many say CBD is the answer.

According to CTV News, aggression and other disruptive behaviors linked to Alzheimer’s disease are notoriously difficult to treat, sometimes leading to patients being restrained or medically sedated. But now, there could be some relief in sight as some doctors are investigating the potential for success with a new strategy: CBD oil. Family members of dementia patients are saying CBD oil is helping their loved ones and “making a world of difference.”

At an Ontario long term care facility in Fenelon Falls, David Scholey’s screams and yelling used to permeate the hallways.  However,  since he tried CBD oil two months ago, the 76-year-old’s dementia-related disruptions have declined. “Within a couple of days you could tell it was working because of the fact that he was a lot quieter, he was a lot calmer,” said Catherine Mantle, a registered nurse and care director at Fenelon Court.

David’s brother, William Scholey also noticed a major improvement. “I think it is wonderful for not only David but for people and family just to see that he is not… as anxious and frustrated,” he said. Sedatives just weren’t quite working for David either, making CBD an easy choice.

William Scholey says “the problem” with sedatives for his brother was that they made it more difficult for David to communicate simple things like which movies he wants to watch. “He’s a movie buff and he is constantly looking for new titles. He likes the old war and cowboy movies and stuff and David has a great memory in that regard,” Scholey said according to CTV News.

Scholey joked that his brother is now a “pothead,” but also said that the therapy doesn’t appear be making David “high.” That’s likely because CBD is not the chemical in cannabis that makes people feel euphoric. The “high” comes mainly from Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Is CBD Oil a Good Choice for Your Bug-Out-Bag?

Betty Wiggle’s family has also turned to CBD oil. Her son, James Tripp, says the drug shifted his 92-year-old mother’s mood from anxious and depressed to cheerful.

As her caregiver, Tripp says the CBD therapy has been a godsend.

“I was so worn out from looking after her. It is hard enough looking after seniors but an Alzheimer’s patient is literally a 24/7 job. I was sleeping two hours a day. I was exhausted dealing with my own health issues,” he said.

“When we got her on the (CBD) therapy it solved so many of the volatility issues,” Tripp added. –CTV News

Of course, there is no “miracle cure” out there for very many ailments or diseases, but many are having success with CBD oil, and considering the ever-rising prices of Big Pharma’s side-effect inducing “cures”, CBD oil usage has become an easy decision for many.

I tried cbd oil and it did nothing for me. My wife says it helps her though. Ibuprophen works way better for me, I don’t have dimentia or do I???? 😛

Hello me, meet the real me
And my misfit’s way of life
A dark black past is my
    Most valued possession
    Hindsight is always 20-20
But looking back it’s still a bit fuzzy
    Speak of mutually assured destruction?
Nice story, tell it to Reader’s Digest!
    Feeling paranoid
    True enemy or false friend?
    Anxiety’s attacking me and
    My air is getting thin
I’m in trouble for the things
    I haven’t got to yet
I’m chomping at the bit and my
Palms are getting wet, sweating bullets
    Hello me, it’s me again
You can subdue but never tame me
It gives me a migraine headache
    Sinking down to your level
Yea, just keep on thinking it’s my fault
And stay an inch or two outta kicking distance
    Mankind has got to know
    His limitations
    Feeling claustrophobic
Like the walls are closing in
Blood stains on my hands and
    I don’t know where I’ve been
I’m in trouble for the things
    I haven’t got to yet
I’m sharpening the axe and my
Palms are getting wet, sweating bullets
Well, me, it’s nice talking to myself
    A credit to dementia
Some day you too will know my pain
    And smile its blacktooth grin
If the war inside my head
Won’t take a day off I’ll be dead
My icy fingers claw your back
    Here I come again
    Feeling paranoid
    True enemy or false friend?
    Anxiety’s attacking me
And my air is getting thin
    Feeling claustrophobic
Like the walls are closing in
    Blood stains on my hands
    And I don’t know where I’ve been
    Once you committed me
    Now you’ve acquitted me
    Claiming validity
    For your stupidity
    I’m chomping at the bit
    I’m sharpening the axe
    Here I come again, whoa

  2. rellik says:

The problem I have with CBD is most the evidence is anecdotal, as are most “natural” medications and diet supplements people here promote.
If this stuff is so good, why aren’t the corporate a$$wipes we hate so much, getting rich off it? They aren’t stupid and they are greedy, if there is a chance for profit they will seek it.
With medicine like everything else in life, follow the money.
Snake oil is still snake oil.

  3. The Deplorable Renegade says:

I’ll buy ONE bottle of CBD and try it. I’ll try almost anything one time before passing judgment on the product or service. Anything has to be better than any of the FDA-approved poisons. I do know that the medications are totally useless.

    • rellik says:

      DR,
I don’t have any need to try CBD, but it seems like snake oil to me.
We all know the history of snake oil.

      • CAaT says:

Not at all sure if CBD is snake oil, but Pharma sure is. I also know that Cannabis in general is a powerful medicine that we are just learning about thanks to the unreasonable fear of government and industry. I do not think Cannabis is the answer to man’s problems, I think it is a new direction away from the for profit medical industry that has haphazardly dropped chemical bombsOn to the American people with little or no testing.

No reasonable argument can be made against legalizing Cannabis, and there is no question that Cannabis is medicine.

My hope is that we learn to use Cannabis correctly to benefit mankind and then look beyond the plant and see if we can make it better. Truth must be most important, followed closely by freedom.

  4. Me.... says:

There has been some verified health improvements in some people using CBD according to > https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476 . .. the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases it was able to stop them altogether. Videos of the effects of CBD on these children and their seizures are readily available on the Internet for viewing, and they are quite striking. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD.

  5. Me.... says:

According to the info I have read there could be a difference in the strength of one CBD to another and other variables as to what plant parts are used, the extraction process used and batch verification testing to name a few. Also, the dosage effect can vary from person to person so that needs to be a bit of trial and error until the best dose amount is realized.

  6. I feel extremely strong about CBD it’s a modern marvel. There are no easy ways to turn the mind to silent or quite, and most psychoactive drugs have terrible side effects. This world has so much stress so much worry and so much frustration. Our minds are killing us and it’s happening at much earlier ages now. I work in the ER and three things could cure most people. CBD, coconut water, fiber tablets. The majority of our illness is stress, dehydration and elimination. Drugs, tobacco, alcohol and sex should also be dropped form TV, Movies and music. Prohibition is the answer.

  8. SBos says:

I’ve been using it for about a year now for shoulder pain. Was refereed for surgery but tried this rout. It works better than the lortabs I used to take. when I run out it will take a week or so until the pain returns. Some other aches and pain is does nothing for. Just my .02

  10. Yes, it’s “unregulated,” but so what? Caveat emptor in all things, man. Do you really want the FDA deciding the value of your natural supplements? What has the FDA done right for you lately? Oh, yeah, they gave you fake fats, fake sugars, chemical flavors, toxic preservatives, toxic emulsifiers and other sickening foods. They give you Vioxx, Lipitor, and other deadly, insufficiently-studied drugs. Yet, you think they should have a hand in your supplements, too? As a tool of Big Pharma, the FDA acts more like a minefield between you and good health. But it can’t stand long between desperate people and something genuine and natural that has been shown to offer huge benefits without the frightening side effects.

If you want to see what CBD can do for you, you need to try it for a couple of weeks before making a judgment because, like most supplements, you need to get a build-up going first. That’s even true for a lot of pharma drugs. As for science, there’s tons of it. Use your MIC-provided Google search and punch in “google scholar.” When you pull it up, type “cannabidiol” in the new search box for Google Scholar. Then see how many studies are out there on CBD. A lot are old, meaning they’ve been looking at it alongside THC as possible medicine for quite some time, since the 50s.

I take it for chronic back pain from a childhood injury. Not only does it work just as well, if not better than, ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin, it doesn’t upset my stomach or make me start feeling poisoned after a couple days of dosing. A happy side effect is that I sleep better. I didn’t even know I could or needed to sleep better until I started CBD. Not all products are the same, though. You might have to do trial and error to find the right brand and formulation. I find that pure isolate CBD, rather than full- or broad-spectrum works best for my pain during the day. It not only knocks out all my pain, but it gives me a lot more energy, too. At night, I like the spectrums because they are more mentally calming. I don’t feel like getting up and writing another blog post instead of sleeping because I have too much energy to burn.

Don’t knock CBD until you try it. And don’t knock others, especially if it’s treating their horrible neurological diseases.
