China And Russia Are Building ‘SHIP-KILLER’ Missiles

As China and Russia continue to build up their arsenal of “ship-killer” missiles, the United States Navy apparently has plans to counter the weapons. Officials have said that the Navy and numerous NATO partners are firing a new, high-tech ship defense weapon that can identify, track, and attack maneuvering anti-ship missiles.

Using an active seeker which enables the missile to change course in flight, is the method of “attack” against the anti-ship missiles of the Chinese and the Russians, service officials have said, according to National Interest.

The Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile Block II, or ESSM, is a new version of an existing Sea Sparrow weapons system currently protecting aircraft carriers, destroyers, cruisers, amphibious assault ships and other vessels against anti-ship missiles and other surface and airborne short-range threats to ships.

The recent live-fire test follows the successful completion of two Controlled Test Vehicle flight tests in June 2017 and is the first in a series of live fire tests that will lead to the ESSM Block 2 missile entering production, Naval Sea Systems Command spokesman Alan Baribeau told Warrior Maven.-National Interest

The ESSM Block 2 live-fire exercise was the first use of the weapon’s active seeker system. That’s the emerging technology which enables the missile to achieve improved flight guidance, which will help it target by both receiving and actively sending electromagnetic signals, Navy officials said. The ESSM also uses radar technology to locate and then intercept a fast-approaching target while in flight. Additionally, the use of what’s called an “illuminator” is a big part of this capability, Raytheon developers told Warrior Maven in prior interviews.

The hopes are that this defense weapon can combat the “ship-killer” missiles being developed and constantly advanced by the Chinese and the Russians.

The emerging missile has an “active” front end, meaning it can send an electromagnetic signal forward to track a maneuvering target, at times without needing a ship-based illuminator for guidance.

Also, the missile is able to intercept threats that are close to the surface by sea-skimming or diving in onto a target from a higher altitude, Navy officials explained. –National Interest

ESSM Block 2 is being jointly acquired by the U.S. and a number of its allied countries including Australia, Canada, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, and Turkey. All these countries have signed an ESSM Block 2 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was meant to solidify the developmental path for the missile system through its next phase. The weapon is slated to be fully operational on ships by the year 2020 – a mere two years away.

    And the beat goes on.

My money is on the USA Navy.

You can’t get away from having a navy since you need amphibious assault vehicles and marines for a beach assault. You also need them to support carriers and aircraft.

But they are sitting ducks for missiles and it’s not expensive to repel them.

Now submarines are remarkable for stealth and being mobile missile launchers with various payloads including nuclear. At the end of the world, the last submarines will be lobbing nuclear missiles from short distances.

But…why is it an American responsibility as we have no true allies? If instead we had invested all that money domestically, no one could stand against us.

With a military, you either scale back for defensive use OR you CRUSH your enemy with total dominance and grow an empire. The latter never works in history. Not even the Romans could maintain it.

No nation respects us and they are all out to get us economically and politically. Our allies are pathetically unprepared because they rely upon us. And that’s why their citizens have higher standards of living while they mock our stupidity and naivete.

Is there anyone who honestly believes that if America was in trouble, say as a result of famine, disease, economic collapse, etc that any nation would help us? The idea is laughable. Under SHTF conditions, we should rather expect occupation as they all lust for our land and natural resources.

I’m still reserving my judgment about Chinese weapon systems until they’re proven or disproven in actual combat conditions. I know the Scum Clintons gave the Chinese most of our technology back in the 90s but it still remains to be seen just how well the Chinese have copied them. I still question whether the Chinese systems are any good. Remember, MADE IN CHINA, just like everything else.

  5. Anonymous says:

The quest for weapons superiority has been going on for as long as weapons have been in use.

It won’t end until war ends.

And that won’t happen till the final battle is fought and mankind is restored to the original purpose for which it was created.

  6. Fritz says:

It seems a darn shame that all the brainpower and treasure that humankind spends on death and destruction couldn’t be used to build a better world for all of us. Oh well, it’s a dog eat dog life … kill or be killed … them or us. Might as well get back to it now and make sure it’s them.

  7. Sgt. Dale says:

    Ship killers.
Just touch off a nuke about 5 to 10 miles away and you have a ship killer.

  8. Maranatha says:

For naval forces to be relevant, they have to be within an area of effective engagement. Then consider the response time to a threat, detection time of the threat, the lock on time for countermeasures, and the travel time of the threat. This is a very small window with naval forces and defensive systems and countermeasures.

Missiles can easily outdistance ships. Ships are not very agile but lumbering hulks.

    • Maranatha says:

To get some idea of the tension, watch The Last Ship which is a post-apocalyptic contagion drama is which the crew of the Nathan James, a naval destroyer, routinely deals with a missile lock and countermeasures and calculating a response, then firing.

Now with a hypersonic, the response time is horrendous due to unbelievable speed and an inability to effectively lock on for countermeasures. Our ships would most likely take crippling attacks but then are more concerned about taking the enemy out…not survival.

  9. aljamo says:

Foreign nations must build up military capacity to offset the US aggressiveness around the world. Iran, zero bases in foreign lands not invited into, Syria and Afghanistan the same with the latter occupation insuring record heroin production under the US imposed puppet leader killing tens of thousands of native people there. Criminal psychopaths a US specialty, village people more like village idiots while the greater US population suffer reduced livelihoods and lifespans buried under deep state fake news about nonexistent threats. Trumps swamp is the deep state stranglehold that he serves. Enough proof of that already if one is honest about the reality. A tiny foreign nation calls all the shots and has since the end of WW2. Every false flag their handiwork.

  10. rellik says:

Most military establishments prepare and equip themselves to fight the last war they fought and won. That is the problem, war changes and evolves as people learn from their mistakes. Our reliance on aircraft carriers is possibly a mistake. I don’t know the answer, but we invest a lot of money in battle groups that can be disabled by a much cheaper Tactical Nuke.
The world is graduating to 4th Generation Warfare but America still uses 3rd Generation Warfare equipment and tactics.

  11. Concerned Citizen says:

Folks, the U.S. is a guaranteed sinking ship, one way or the other. . .

  12. Imagine if the brain power that goes into developing ever better ways to kill, was employed instead in discovering and inventing better ways to improve the quality of life on planet earth for all mankind, not just a tiny minority.

  13. Kfilly says:

The MIC will just get billions for this new project. This is just what we need to keep the war economy booming.

On a side note, would it not be a wise idea to take a laser and point it right at the missle. To blind it’s guidance system. Someone has to have developed a wide beam laser that could accomplish that.

  14. The coming “little ice age” will have us wishing we had built more ice breakers and had invested in repairing/replacing our infrastructure. Too late now!

    • Paranoid says:

Sorry but exactly what infrastructure do we need to repair for an Ice Age Millions of Ice picks and tongs? Warm socks, snow shovels? What do you need an icebreaker for? Canada won’t be shipping any wheat.
