Unprecedented Weakness in Global Trade: “Obvious That We Reached Peak Trade in 2007”

Trading Post - Barter

This article was written by Tyler Durden and originally published at Zero Hedge.

Editor’s Comment: All the central banks’ horses and all the central banks’ men couldn’t put the global economy back together again. The grinding halt of “growth” in global trade is just another aspect of the tough times facing financial forecasts. The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) showed extremely foreboding signs towards the beginning of this year that the shipping of global commodities for trade was at a disturbing low point dating back almost a decade.

Meanwhile, the warnings about the overvalued and burst-prone stock market bubble have also been noted again and again. The Fed’s decision – whether or not to hike rates – will have a huge impact, but things look gloomy and vulnerable regardless. We will continue to track this, and keep in mind that no man knows the hour; this manipulated economy is devoid of life signs, but could limp along, undead and feeding off of other’s life energy, almost indefinitely as well.

WTO’s Stark Warning On Global Trade: “The Timing Belt On The Global Growth Engine Is Off”

by Tyler Durden

One narrative we’ve built on this year is that the subpar character of the global economic recovery isn’t just a consequence of a transient downturn in demand from China whose transition from an investment-led, smokestack economy towards a model driven by consumption and services has effectively caused the engine of global growth to stall. Rather, it seems entirely possible that an epochal shift has taken place in the post-crisis world and the downturn in global trade which many had assumed was merely cyclical, may in fact be structural and endemic.

We touched on this in “Emerging Market Mayhem: Gross Warns Of ‘Debacle’ As Currencies, Bonds Collapse,” when we highlighted a WSJ piece that contained the following rather disconcerting passage: “Central to this emerging-market slump is the unprecedented weakness of world trade, which has now grown by less than global output for the past four years, unique since World War II.”

This echoes concerns we voiced in May, when BofAML was out warning that if “wobbling” global trade turned out to be structural rather than cyclical, “then EM economies should not count on meaningful demand boosts coming from above-trend growth in DM.”

Most recently, we looked at freight rates (which, incidentally, Goldman predicted earlier this year will remain subdued until 2020) noting that despite a dead cat bounce in the Baltic Dry, “freight rates on the world’s busiest shipping route have tanked this year due to overcapacity in available vessels and sluggish demand for transported goods. Rates generally deemed profitable for shipping companies on the route are at about US$800-US$1,000 per TEU. In other words, at current prices shippers are losing half a dollar on every booked contractual dollar at current rates.”

Now, WSJ is back with a fresh look at the new normal for global trade and unsurprisingly, the picture they paint based largely on WTO data and projections, is not pretty. Here’s more:

For the third year in a row, the rate of growth in global trade is set to trail the already sluggish expansion of the world economy, according to data from the World Trade Organization and projections from leading economists.

Before the recent slump, the last time trade growth underperformed the rate of an economic expansion was 1985.

“We have seen this burst of globalization, and now we’re at a point of consolidation, maybe retrenchment,” said WTO chief economist Robert Koopman. “It’s almost like the timing belt on the global growth engine is a bit off or the cylinders are not firing as they should.”

Since rebounding sharply in 2010 after the financial crisis, trade growth has averaged only about 3% a year, compared with 6% a year from 1983 to 2008, the WTO says.

Few see any signs that trade will soon regain its previous pace of growth, which was double the rate of economic expansion before 2008. In 2006, global trade volumes grew 8.5%, compared with a 4% expansion in global GDP.

This year the WTO is expected to cut its 2015 trade forecast a second time after a sudden contraction in the first half of the year—the first such decline since 2009.

“It’s fairly obvious that we reached peak trade in 2007,” said Scott Miller, trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington, D.C., think tank.

And this, bear in mind, is the environment into which the Fed intends to hike, even as the emerging economies which have been hit the hardest by the slowdown in trade (which has served to depress commodities and wreak havoc on commodity currencies) would likely suffer from accelerated capital outflows in the wake of an FOMC liftoff.

What’s also notable here is that this comes as central banks have engaged in round after round of easing in a desperate, multi-trillion quest to boost global growth, suggesting that competitive devaluations are a zero sum game and to the extent that individual countries can boost exports in the short term by devaluing, that gain comes at someone else’s expense, meaning, in The Journal’s words, “foreign-exchange moves have little chance of raising trade overall” and even if they did, the backdrop of depressed demand means that what many EMs are producing, no one now wants, irrespective of how cheap it may be.

Make no mistake, the most worrying part of the new normal for trade is what it portends for emerging markets. We’ve already seen Brazil’s investment grade rating cut by S&P as the country careens headlong into fiscal, political, and economic crises. As Morgan Stanley put it in August, Brazil is the epicenter and one can reasonably expect that other EMs will follow in its footsteps should the WTO’s projections about the sturctural nature of depressed global demand and trade prove accurate. What comes next is the descent of the emerging world into frontier status, and as we’ve put it on several occasions, after that it will be time to break out the humanitarian aid packages.

Of course, as we mentioned late last month, there is one more possibility: central banks could learn how to print trade.

Russia, China, and the EM thought they could fuck the FED over. Guess who is taking the green weenie up the yazoo? Hint: Its not the FED. A 25 bp rate hike will not impact the US Economy much, except strengthen the dollar and give Americans more purchasing power.

The rest of the world will be scrambling as dollars around the world disappear. China most of all. 🙂

Here’s why you can’t answer, because you and usasecuritygaurd are the same person, that’s why. You’ve been caught red handed in a lie and you try to spin it as an ” attack” on your credibility. Your little joke is over, people have woken up to the fact you’re just some kid in his mom’s basement. Good luck with that. The lambs are just as asleep as their parents. If they get a little woken up, and start seeing light, the college educators and/or liberal establishment will see to it that they are pulled back down into the recesses of darkness and mind control.

Yesterday I had an experience that confirms what is taking priority in educators minds. It isn’t the betterment of mankind and the improvement of life, it is all about the numbers.

Who is controlling those numbers? Well, it is mega Corporations, and the Mega Corporation specifically is Big Pharma. I lived it yesterday.

After having an MRI in July to confirm a major back issue with pain and bouts of temporary paralysis, coming from one vertabrae and disc mainly. I finally got a visit to the Neurosurgery Unit at the University Medical Center that has a good reputation. Knowing quite a bit about bulging and herniated discs, I knew that surgery was unlikely at this point.

However; they are supposed to be the professionals, so we must allow for the possibility that they can read an MRI with better judgment. As an intern did his process of examinations, I became very leery of his indoctrinated opinions. Finally he says I need to clarify these findings with my superior (Instructor), and see what the determination is. As i was in more pain from the tests and the vertebra that housed my 1000 degree dagger, was grinding at my lower back nerves, I waited patiently for another fifteen minutes.

The Intern finally bounced into the door and stated; ” I have good news for you, there is nothing wrong with your spine or vertabrae, or discs. In fact you have a perfect spine, actually a beautiful back bone and we have determined no surgery is needed, (which meant we can’t perform surgery at this point).
So, the pain you think is coming from a slightly enlarged disc, is actually from a neuromuscular issue and we have a new medicinal treatment that just may help you.”

His pearly white teeth gleaming as a wolf just about to tear into a paunch of it’s latest kill.

See, he made the rookie mistake. He assumed by my looks and country twang, that he had a push over with a low IQ. What he did not count on was that I was prepared for the insult to my intelligence and research. Rather than tell him and his superior what i actually thought of their attempted con job, I slowly and painfully, stood up, ignoring his glare, and said to the wife sitting there like a deer caught in headlights, “Get up, we are out of here”. He was still rambling about needing to try the medications as i was already heading for the exit. I left him and his pearly whites standing there with papers in hand, looking like his fresh kill had been stolen by a bigger and more dominant wolf.

Muscular my ass. What a piece of Big Pharma pushing crap these Doctors have turned in to.

The system is all rigged now for every facet of our lives. The only hope one has is to be self sufficient enough to control their own destiny. There are alternatives to Big Pharma and Indoctrinated Medicine Corporations.

The Good Book doesn’t call it, “Sorceries” for nothing.

      Rev 18:23
And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee;…. for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

Sorcery = ObominableCare + Big Pharma + Insurance Corporations

Next time you experience paralysis, or loss of sensation/urgency related to bowel and bladder, go to the ER. Tell the. You suddenly lost the strength, or peed or shit yourself. Freaking idiot doctor. Paralysis, even if temporary, or problems with bowel/bladder due to nerve compression is a surgical emergency at the time it occurs. Stay away from teaching hospitals when you can. And you have the right to refuse care from residents. Medicare doesn’t recognize residents for reimbursement purposes in many situations. I am a certified registered nurse anesthetist, and even though I understand people must be trained, I would not allow a resident or other professional in training evaluate me without direct supervision present.

You never know that the attending physician didn’t ask the resident for a key piece of info that the resident forgot to ask you, so he lied to cover his ass, therefore attending doctor felt your condition not as severe as it sounds. Just sayin.

  18. Wormwood says:

1 Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. 2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. 3 The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for the LORD has spoken this word. 4 The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the highest people of the earth languish. 5 The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched, and few men are left. 7 The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. 8 The mirth of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled. 9 No more do they drink wine with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. 10 The wasted city is broken down; every house is shut up so that none can enter. 11 There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished. 12 Desolation is left in the city; the gates are battered into ruins. 13 For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is done.
    (Is 24:1-13 ESVSB)
17 Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth! 18 He who flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. 19 The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken. 20 The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again. 21 On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. 22 They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. 23 Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders.

      Satori,

      I saw this too.

I was surprised to read that this was the 14th time in the past year. Not good.

“The FBI says whoever has been attacking the cables usually opens a underground vault, climbs inside and then cuts through the cables’ protective metal conduit before severing the lines themselves.”

      Terrorists probing infrastructure?
“Security experts say the attacks could be the work of a disgruntled employee or of terrorists probing the nation’s infrastructure to see how long repairs take. FBI officials say it’s possible whoever has been attacking the cables is dressed as a utility company employee.”

      • Plan twice, prep once says:

These attacks are a waste. The Internet just automatically reroutes traffic around the break.

Automatic diagnostic tools kick in, send a signal down the line to where the cut is, the signal reflects back and by timing it they can tell where the cut is within a foot or two accuracy.

Once the break is identified, repair teams are dispatched and it’s fixed within hours, 24/7!

The FBI would be all over this, finger prints, DNA, surveillance cams, even satellite and drone imaging. This is perhaps one of our most critical infrastructure items. Yet they never seem to catch them, so I’m assuming they are false flag attacks, likely originating in the FBI itself.

How to Make a Natural Antibacterial Hand Sanitizer

“This is simple but valuable information. Clean hands are a must for maintaining health. The antibacterial soaps you can buy in the store have the chemical triclosan in them and can actually be detrimental to your health.

Triclosan is used in many pesticides and it is stored in your body fat where it can accumulate after long usage. As you wash your hands, the skin absorbs this substance and essentially you are putting minute particles of poison in your system.

So, why not use a convenient natural antibacterial product that you can make using a common plant that can probably be found out in your own herb garden? Rosemary has many valuable properties but the one I’m going to spotlight here is its antibacterial property.”

How to Make Rosemary Hand Sanitizer
“Put 1/4 cup fresh leaves of rosemary in a glass or stainless steel pan. Pour 2 cups of filtered water over the leaves and bring the heat up until the water is almost boiling.

Remove the pan from the heat, cover it, and let the leaves steep for 20 minutes. Next, pour the rosemary-infused water into a spray bottle.

I use small reusable spray bottles that fit nicely in my purse, car, lunch containers or wherever else I may need to keep some.

As a bonus, this simple antibacterial infusion can be sprayed on kitchen counters, tables, chairs, and any other surface you want to sanitize. Just spray on a light coating and wipe it clean!”

Greed is the name of this game American’s have been trapped into. Everything stolen at the top. 9-11 being the catalyst to advance the present condition. It’s working like clockwork. The known criminals who carried out 9-11 solidified their power while leaving the American people hanging by a thread. The U.S. armed forces are the establishment’s protection from the people regarding the official story of 9-11. The fact that there has yet to be an investigation of the event matters not.

Hubby has his workshop almost completely closed in. He’s started looking for a job down here. Deer patches are planted. Just got a 50% off with free shipping email on fruit trees. (Specials.naturehills.com). Will be placing an order shortly. The chickens are all coming online nicely laying eggs. I plan to sew some seeds for greens this weekend. A fall crop of lettuce, spinach, kale and collards.

Will also be making plans for bees this winter. I have to re read my information so I can get a docile breed. That’s oxymoronic to me. A docile insect that stings the shit out of you when it gets pissed. Ha. Just fi, it’s expensive, but there is a new hive super on the market called honeyflow, and it has false comb in it, that when he comb is full of honey, you insert and handle and twist the combs. This allows all the honey to drain out of a spout without having to pull the racks from the supers, etc, etc. about $700 each.
