US Dollars as toilet paper

This article was written by Michael Snyder and originally published at his Economic Collapse Blog.

Editor’s Comment: On the one hand, the dollar under quantitative easing has watered down the purchasing power of the currency by giving the banks unlimited credit, and easy credit to many other countries, states, businesses and individuals. But now, in a perfect storm, a simple rate hike by the Federal Reserve will now create a reaping moment, when the bill will come due, and so much will come undone.

It is not so much the appropriateness of one maneuver or the other by a central bank, but the raw power granted to one unaccountable institution that can single-handedly create the rise and fall of nearly the entire economy. A carefully controlled currency, tied to real value is the only sensible thing to do. Instead, the Federal Reserve has been given the power to control – through boom and bust – the lives of everyone involved in the illusion and usury of the dollar.

The U.S. Dollar Has Already Caused A Global Recession And Now The Fed Is Going To Make It Worse

by Michael Snyder

The 7th largest economy on the entire planet, Brazil, has been gripped by a horrifying recession, as has much of the rest of South America.  But it isn’t just South America that is experiencing a very serious economic downturn.  We have just learned that Japan (the third largest economy in the world) has lapsed into recession.  So has Canada.  So has Russia.  The dominoes are starting to fall, and it looks like the global economic crisis that has already started is going to accelerate as we head into the end of the year.  At this point, global trade is already down about 8.4 percent for the year, and last week the Baltic Dry Shipping Index plummeted to a brand new all-time record low.  Unfortunately for all of us, the Federal Reserve is about to do something that will make this global economic slowdown even worse.

Throughout 2015, the U.S. dollar has been getting stronger.  That sounds like good news, but the truth is that it is not.  When the last financial crisis ended, emerging markets went on a debt binge unlike anything we have ever seen before.  But much of that debt was denominated in U.S. dollars, and now this is creating a massive problem.  As the U.S. dollar has risen, the prices that many of these emerging markets are getting for the commodities that they export have been declining.  Meanwhile, it is taking much more of their own local currencies to pay back and service all of the debts that they have accumulated.  Similar conditions contributed to the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980s, the Asian currency crisis of the 1990s and the global financial crisis of 2008 and 2009.

Many Americans may be wondering when “the next economic crisis” will arrive, but nobody in Brazil is asking that question.  Thanks to the rising U.S. dollar, Brazil has already plunged into a very deep recession

As Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff combats a slumping economy and corruption accusations, the country’s inflation surged above 10 percent while unemployment jumped to 7.9 percent, according to the latest official data. The dour state of affairs has Barclays forecasting a 4 percent economic contraction this year, followed by 3.3 percent shrinkage next year, the investment bank said in a research note last week.

The political and economic turmoil has recently driven the real, Brazil’s currency, to multiyear lows, a factor helping to stoke price pressures.

And as I mentioned above, Brazil is far from alone.  This is something that is happening all over the planet, and the process appears to be accelerating.  One of the places where this often first shows up is in the trade numbers.  The following comes from an article that was just posted by Zero Hedge

This market is looking like a disaster and the rates are a reflection of that,” warns one of the world’s largest shipbrokers, but while The Baltic Dry Freight Index gets all the headlines – having collapsed to all-time record lows this week – it is the spefics below that headline that are truly terrifying. At a time of typical seasonal strength for freight and thus global trade around the world, Reuters reports that spot rates for transporting containers from Asia to Northern Europe have crashed a stunning 70% in the last 3 weeks alone. This almost unprecedented divergence from seasonality has only occurred at this scale once before… 2008! “It is looking scary for the market and it doesn’t look like there is going to be any life in the market in the near term.”

Many “experts” seem mystified by all of this, but the explanation is very simple.

For years, global economic growth was fueled by cheap U.S. dollars.  But since the end of QE, the U.S. dollar has been surging, and according to Bloomberg it just hit a 12 year high…

The dollar traded near a seven-month high against the euro before the release of minutes of the Federal Reserve’s October meeting, when policy makers signaled the potential for an interest-rate increase this year.

A trade-weighted gauge of the greenback is at the highest in 12 years as Fed Chair Janet Yellen and other policy makers have made numerous pronouncements in the past month that it may be appropriate to boost rates from near zero at its Dec. 15-16 gathering. The probability the central bank will act next month has risen to 66 percent from 50 percent odds at the end of October.

But even though the wonks at the Federal Reserve supposedly know the damage that a strong dollar is already doing to the global economy, they seem poised to make things even worse by raising interest rates in December

Most Federal Reserve policymakers agreed last month that the economy “could well” be strong enough in December to withstand the Fed’s first Interest rate hike in nearly a decade, according to minutes of its meeting Oct. 27-28.

The officials said global troubles had eased and a delay could increase market uncertainty and undermine confidence in the economy.

The meeting summary provides the clearest evidence yet that a majority of Fed policymakers are leaning toward raising the central bank’s benchmark rate next month, assuming the economy continues to progress.

Considering the tremendous amount of damage that has already been done to the global economy, this is one of the stupidest things that they could possibly do.

But it looks like they are going to do it anyway.

It has been said that those that refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

And right now so many of the exact same patterns that we saw just before the great financial crisis of 2008 are playing out once again right in front of our eyes.

A lot of people out there seem to assume that once we got past the September/October time frame that we were officially out of “the danger zone”.

But that is not true at all.

The truth is that we have already entered a new global economic downturn that is rapidly accelerating, and the financial shaking that we witnessed in August was just a foreshock of what is coming next.

Let us hope that common sense prevails and the Fed chooses not to raise interest rates at their next meeting.

Because if they do, it will just make the global crisis that is now emerging much, much worse.

Love Michael Snyder, but he really should stick to law. He doesn’t understand what is really happening economically. I have explained many times that the DOLLAR is the weapon of choice.

The FED is at WAR with the BRIC’s for challenging FED hegemony.

All of them are suffering. Some more than others based upon the mismanagement of their own economies and currencies. China in particular. Don’t listen to what the PTB say, watch what they do, and understand the ramifications of their actions: especially the FED.

I told this community in September that the FED would raise rates if they wanted to put more pressure on the BRIC’s, and that would occur after the end of the fiscal year Sept 30th. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to any of you if the FED bumps rates now.

The end of the business cycle has already occurred. The markets will catch up sooner, rather than later. A 25 bp rate hike has NO meaningful financial impact upon the economy; only a psychological one, that will TEMPER US markets.

The US Dollar has not caused the “Global Recession”. The FED has actually been BEHIND the curve rather than leading it as is normally the case. Recessions happen cyclically and can be charted for several hundred years in the United States. It happens this way:

People and businesses take on too much debt to acquire assets and expand their businesses. (“Greed is Good”) Eventually people & businesses can only service so much debt, and begin to cut back their borrowing and purchases. This action by the masses has a depressive effect upon demand, as we have seen. Sales decline. Inventories back up. Jobs are lost to layoffs. Those who are laid off, stop buying unessential goods & services, and the downward spiral begins.

The FED attempts to manipulate demand by raising or lowering rates. Eventually the economy overheats or crashes from either too high of interest rates, or lack of demand.

The current business cycle has been exacerbated by the offshoring of American jobs to China, and the failure of the CCP to move to a totally capitalistic market system. Actions by China to overtake the USA (with the CCP in control) has led to its economic demise and I would be very surprised if things in China didn’t get many magnitudes worse than it is now.

Its a long way to July first and WRC status for the Yuan which would help to stabilize the Chinese economy, but ALOT can happen between now and then. 🙂

“Recessions happen cyclically and can be charted for several hundred years in the United States”. UH DK, I don’t think the U.S. has been in existence for “several hundred years”. Just sayin’, not tryin to pick mind you but I catch your meaning.

            • AnonLegion says:

PO’d unfortunately several means more than 2 but less than many. So several hundred would work here. It does not actually mean 7 i lost a bet on this one a while back lol. and Hundreds all you need is 101 to be able to say it. ( another bet i lost )

            • durangokidd says:

Recessions in the United States can be charted for MORE than two hundred years, as the USA has been in existence for 239 years. As a colony of Great Britain, recessions can be charted back much, much farther in the mother country; or on a global basis.

The point is that recessions are the consequence at the end of the business cycle and this is proven by history. Many in Alt Media would have you believe that this one is the last one: TEOTWAWKI.

You guys are getting desperate for criticism. 🙂

hogwash! when interest rates go to around 4%, our debt will no longer be serviceable by our income (a product of GDP). when in the history of the U.S. have you seen interest rates below 1/2% for several years? it’s simple enough to a third grader…we have to much debt…that’s what the dollar is…it’s an instrument of DEBT..the FED is broke, the feral gubmint is broke(and BROKEN)!, the states are pretty much ALL broke, cities are broke…the PEOPLE are broke(and BROKEN)….unfunded liabilities by companies/gubmints(state/city/county/feds) to the tune of TRILLIONS of dollars…and that’s just the tip of the iceberg…no, michael snyder DOES know what he’s writing about, and you poor simps that think everything will “work out” are about to get a wakeup slap in the face…no, actually, it will be more like gettin’ left in a ditch…naked and BLEEDING!…it’s gonna be EPIC, and it’s gonna be SOON. so take advantage of the fact that we been wrong for all these years…consider it a GIFT. because when we/he is finally proven RIGHT, it WILL be the end, at least for a helluva bunch of years, unless we get a whole lot of people waking up and righting this ship….remember, the american people will ALWAYS do the right thing, but only after exhausting ALL OTHER POSSIBILITIES. a can only can be kicked down the road so many times, until it becomes so crushed, it’s no longer a CAN….and BTW, have y’all noticed that we got a disrespectful bunch of TWITS that we’ve raised up the last couple generations? what do you think will happen to U.S. when all these gimmee gimmees can’t get their mood altering drugs anymore?…it’s gonna be the great american FREAKOUT!….and i haven’t even touched the SURFACE of what’s wrong with america….business cycle INDEED!…PFFT!

Collateral damage in the United States as a result of China’s Yuan becoming the next reserve currency (official announcement to be made by the International Monetary Fund next 11/30/2015):
          – Senior citizens
          – Retirees
          – The disabled

This important segment of the US population (around 38%) live on fixed incomes.

Americans chronically addicted to government benefits who were not included in the group mentioned above (around 27% of the entire populace), specifically those enrolled in subsidized housing, general assistance, food stamps and SSI, will gradually see those entitlements being diminished until they are completely eradicated

The progressive loss of purchasing power using US Dollars is going to hurt badly everyone in this country, is unavoidable and will be labeled as the event that caused the SHTF.

This blog seems to deliberately ignoring the tectonic shift that will take place in the financial world in less than 7 days.

          • durangokidd says:

O&L: I am not at all certain that the Yuan will actually become a WRC next summer. The announcement due from the IMF will be “subject to”. Subject to what? Subject to the Rules; meaning the Yuan must be subject to market forces which the CCP cannot control.

China has given lip service to these conditions and made some strides to these conditions, but whether they will follow through, or CAN under current financial conditions remain to be seen.

If current conditions in Chinese markets are any indication as to how the CCP will react to a free market in its currency; it will never happen. I do not believe they will ever play by the Rules and allow the West (market forces) to control their currency.

If the CCP releases the Yuan to market forces, a TSUNAMI of capital in China will flee the country. This year to date has seen more than $500 Billion dollar equivalent (BDE) exit the country. That is peanuts compared to the amount of currency that will find the exits: especially in such turbulent times.

Make no mistake the WEST: The IMF under US voting control, WANTS China to align its currency and economy more fully with the Rothschild banking cartel. That’s why a Senior Rothschild family member has been living in China for decades. Imagine, eight more fiat pairs to trade and an insatiable market for gold. The possibilities of making more “money” hand over fist, over foot, are endless !!!

Here is a link to a Bloomberg article which puts the transition into perspective:

What ultimately happens as a consequence to this CHANGE, is anyone’s guess, since this sort of thing has never happened in this way before, but you can be assured that the FED, the IMF, and the BIS have modeled the potential consequences ad infinitum on super computers with sensitivity analysis and goal seeking software to identify the optimal process.

The Gangster Banksters are NOT going to shoot themselves in the foot. They are very smart and have virtually infinite financial resources at their disposal: the US Dollar. 🙁

eppe, I like my Beeman .22 break barrel..pretty accurate, needs (according to Beeman) about 500 rounds thru it to get full accuracy. (about $150 back in ’08) I’ll look for the model # if this post actually makes it.
Do not buy their interchangeable barrel rifle. Accuracy sucks.
You can spend some serious change for a top line rifle with pinpoint accuracy, just depends on your purpose.
Check to see if the you-tube video is still up from a few yrs. ago, called “rat sniper”. Foreign, maybe German rifle, guy just puts one rat after another to “sleep” with head shots in a wood pile.

eppe, I’ve got a Gamo single pump in a .177 that I swear by. I’m sure they make a .22. You can get the “platinum” pellets that shoot supersonic. Sounds and acts much like a .22 cal rim-fire rifle.

        • Texasprepper says:

I have a Benjamin Trail Nitro Piston .22 caliber I swear by. Took a couple hundred rounds to get really good accuracy, now head shots on squirrels are routine.

        • Ketchupondemand says:

check like sportsman’s guide and maybe gander mt. and read the reviews on each air rifle. Ruger .22 doesn’t rate that good.

        • Mr. Jameson says:

Beeman, Gamo, Benjamin, all good. No daisy or crossman, those are junk. Wood stocks look nice, but synthetics last. Go to your local sporting goods store (if you have one) and handle a few. You can feel quality in your hands and it will feel like a real gun, not a bb gun. It should be a break-barrel, not 10-pump like a crossman or daisy. PBA ammo will shoot a few hundred fps faster. It should come with a decent scope as well, adjustable & quality with caps front and rear. Hope this helps!!

All the shit you see is a gigantic orchestra being conducted by the men behind the curtain. NONE of this is by accident! It is a carefully and very intelligently designed agenda to bring total control to a handful of men. Humanity HAS overpopulated and is no longer needed to keep the ship afloat. 5. 1999 – Bill Clinton repealing the Glass-Steagall Act. Allowed Banking practices to do unimaginable, unlawful business with no oversight or control.

Dems & Reps both equally at fault for gutting the Middle Class, and dismantling the Manufacturing Base and turning the country into a Service Jobs only force didn’t help matters much either.

“Let us hope that common sense prevails and the Fed chooses not to raise interest rates at their next meeting.”

I say bullshit … raise it, and let the ponzi scheme expose itself for what it is. This “kicking the can” down the road routine has gone on for too long now.

If we had anything resembling an “honest, moral banking system”, we wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place.

Anyhoo – I don’t foresee them raising rates. They’ll keep it floating awhile longer until something “catastrophic” happens to cover the bankrupt country that they themselves have created.

The banking system, like the government, is a total fraud. They print, in unaudited amounts, “money” with no specie backing. Insiders get the “money,” then they “buy” hard assets with the funny money. Many of the buyers are chinees, or other commies.

      Total fraud. It’s comin’ down.

      What that means is:

Rates will not have any significant rise until about August or September of 2016. This way when a Republican President takes over the US economy will be totally destroyed and it will be the “new” president’s fault.

  6. The Fed won’t raise rates…they can’t. There trapped, and they know it. We’re going to enter a scenario of negative interest rates. We’re already there, as the REAL (not the illusionary rate of 2.3%) inflation rate is higher than the fed fund “prime” interest rate. But it will get worse, and the day will come soon that you’ll get 0% on your savings account. You may even pay them on your deposits…..!!!

The Federal Reserve has backed themselves into a corner. At this point in the fiat scam, they are desperate to raise the rates ONLY so they can then lower them to ‘stimulate the economy’. Nixon’s 1971 deal with the Saudi’s kept the Bretton-Woods agreement in place, but it’s finally in the last stages. The bottom line is they are going to keep lying and scamming to keep this sham going until it’s finally and utterly destroyed. The reason why it’s still going is due to the size of the US economy, and up until now, there has been no one to challenge us economically or militarily. Also, don’t miss the fact that all western central banks are doing the same thing as the Federal Reserve. Their actions are also extending this mess. What is changing this time is that there are other world powers (China, Russia etc.) that are creating a multi-polar global power system. The US is destined to sink from the world stage and become a weak 2nd or 3rd rate power. These things take time to unravel, and dying systems tend to have an unpredictable amount of remaining time before they finally die.

“over 250 people from the United States have attempted to join ISIS, according to a report from the House Homeland Security Committee. Also, some 82 individuals in the United States have been interdicted by federal agents as part of ISIS plots, according to a database compiled by Threat Knowledge Group.”

“The report notes that “ISIS is a fully-fledged insurgency” and has been able to achieve far more than Al Qaeda has in its past. In such a short amount of time, ISIS has been able to recruit a force of tens-of-thousands of jihadis while also controlling territory, a feat that Al Qaeda has never accomplished by itself.”

“TKG warns that the United States must steel itself for the “difficult times ahead” and be ready to counter the threats posed by ISIS inside of the United States.”

In summary, TKG recommends that American officials should:
    1. “Stop downplaying the seriousness of the threat.”
2.“ Recognize that ISIS is targeting youth, and do more to protect youth from radicalization.”
    3. “Target the ideologues.”
    4. “Better utilize open-source intelligence.”

I believe that Heading is written completely wrong, and misleading. By now, the American people for the most part should know who the threat/enemy is.

That Heading should be written as this:

Washington D.C.: ‘The Threat to the United States’

Any attack from an outside “foreign entity” had some dire help from the “inside entity” for any attack that may take place on US soil.

ISIS is a “MADE IN USA”/Ally Creation
[you should know this by now, the hell with Breitbart]

You will never kill the tree until you kill the root, the fed reserve.

        • Correct you are Genius – but … when I say Government … it includes all branches and it’s affiliates, inside and outside sources too.

If the people would wise up and ban together to do something about “government” … then dealing with the Bankers inside or outside will be dealt with and kick them to the curb and have banking reformed and regulated.

        • …and thats why your alias is “Genius”!!!

Actually the fed is simply behind the curtain with the IMF. But, your assessment of the USA, Inc being middle management is quite appropriate.

  27. the Lone Ranger says:

You are saying the Federal Reserve is about to do “Tremendous Amount of Damage” to our U.S. Dollar?

    Say what?

Um, when did they ever NOT damage the dollar?

Let’s have a little history lesson here, shall we?

Kennedy issues Silver Certificates (remember when they were in circulation?)

Kennedy is then shot and killed.

Then, Silver no longer backed the dollar. Copper gets inserted into our coinage, because of the devaluation of the dollar, and Silver Certificates are withdrawn.

Next, Johnson sends FIFTY-EIGHT THOUSAND AMERICANS to their DEATHS in Vietnam. (Kennedy had issued an Executive Order commanding the withdrawal of all Americans FROM Vietnam, and then he was killed.)

Then, Nixon takes us off the Gold Standard. Last I checked what one single dollar purchased in 1962 is what about seventeen can purchase today.

And you know the rest, as evidenced in the suffering of Americans since November 22, 1963, which continues to this day as the people behind the scenes get richer by selling weapons to BOTH sides of global conflicts.

So WHERE have all those flowers gone?

They’ve gone to the lovers and family members of young American men and women we seduce into soldiers who fight wars that lead to graveyards that lead to flowers decorating their graves, and for what? All so a few people could get rich off of their “sacrifice”.

Last I checked, Veterans are STILL treated like dirt! And why?

God sees when you pick your apples, and God also sees when you pick the pockets of hard-working American taxpayers who are forced to fund dictatorships, tyranny, wars founded upon lies about weapons that never existed, terrorists like ISIS, and I could go on and on.

So the NEXT time I want to hear about nine PRIVATELY owned banks WE call the “FEDERAL” Reserve, I expect ALL the aforementioned truths to be stated alongside that 52-year old Assassination when a few people organized a hit on a President who dared to defy the warmongers, the drug pushers, and the destructively led intelligent factions of our government.

Follow the money, my friends, and you will see it all is the consequence of that perenially tragic November day in Dallas, one referred to by John McCain in a debate as “the tragedy of the intervention in Dallas.” Yes, they sure intervened to take out the President so he would not take them either to the curb or the jails in which they belonged!

When Nikita Kruschev found out the President was killed, he angrily told his intelligence forces, “FIND OUT WHO KILLED PRESIDENT KENNEDY!”

When they later brought him the answer– that he was killed by forces within his own government– he was as sickened and outraged as the rest of us.

Truth never damages a cause that is just, stated Gandhi, so kindly remember all these facts the next time you read or hear about the so-called federal reserve, lest you be led to a festering sewer that will make you want to take a long shower.

    – the Lone Ranger

However paper money wears out. and truckloads of worn soiled bills are burned every day. the mint prints mostly one dollar and twenty dollar bills.
